- Correspondent David Pogue joins Titanic enthusiasts who will happily pay a small fortune to ride in OceanGate's specially-designed submersible vehicle, equipped with 4K video cameras, to visit the remains of the luxury liner 13,000 feet beneath the North Atlantic (weather conditions permitting). Originally broadcast November 27, 2022.

There are certain elements that cannot fail under any circumstances such as the hull, the windows, the seal, etc. after that though, some things can and should be expected to malfunction. You couldn’t pay me to get in anything bolted shut from the outside. I had a pool growing up and when I was 7 years old I decided to take the pools toy box and take it under water like a submarine. I got in it and went underwater. Just as I realized I was trapped my friend pulled the lid off. He just so happened to knock on my door and check the back because no one answered the door. He saw the toy box and pulled me out. This stuck with me over the years and I have no interest going underwater in another box any time soon.
It’s kinda sad because we might never know what truly happened or what wrong because there wasn’t a black box or any form to know what the crew said and what happened.

True you’d think it would need to be a torque wrench. I used to work on munitions in the Air Force and every bolt would need to be torqued, then slightly loosened, and torqued again. Torque wrenches required periodic calibration. While working on the munitions there would be a guy that was required to read each step of the process out loud as we did it…didn’t matter if everyone there had the whole process memorized or not. The whole thing at least felt more professional than these guys just zipping the door on with an impact

We don't know if it was torqued to spec or not. We just saw a few seconds of a guy running one bolt. I'm guessing there probably is no spec at all.

2:40 Well, that waiver says it all. That submersible was completely improvised. There were no redundancies or safety features, and it was terribly claustrophobic. Honestly, the thought of going that deep is in itself terrifying, but doing so in a plastic tube steered with a game control is simply crazy. As a bare minimum, a proper submersible ought to have a conventional ballast system, using water as ballast and compressed air to release it and float back to the surface. Two lines, one for communication and a cable to allow the mothership to recover the vehicle in case of malfunction ought to be mandatory. The Titanic is remembered not only because it was the largest and most luxurious ship in the world, but also because safety was not a priority. Corners were cut when it came to lifeboats and iceberg warnings, leading to tragedy. People should have learned the lessons from the Titanic, instead of turning it into a tourist attraction and making the same mistake all over again. If I were to visit the Titanic, safety would be the first thing on my mind. There's no way I would have boarded this craft which was almost put together with duct tape.
Compressed air ballast cant be used that deep. The water pressure exceeds the pressure inside a compressed gas cylinder. You have to drop weights in an emergency. At the titanic the pressure is 5800 psi about. Most compressed gas is basically a liquid at that point.
Most research subs are pretty safe they dont use teathers because they can get caught on things. Also surface waves can push the ship around and yard on the cable which can be an issue. What is irregular about this sub is the composite tube. Also compared to others it is fairly big inside.
The composite make me nervous. I cant think of any other subs that go that deep that use composite pressure vessels.
@@mshepard2264 OK, I'll check that up.

So basically the fact that this vessel has gone down successfully in the past is a MIRACLE
Definitely a miracle and likely gave a false sense of security, while the vessel got weaker and weaker with each dive. From what I’ve read, carbon fiber, in this environment, degrades each dive. Where steel or titanium would be less likely to degrade so quickly.

With an average descent rate of 73 feet per minute (and assuming loss of communication is when the implosion occurred) the Titan was 7,720 feet deep and 4,780 feet from the ocean floor.
The pressure at that depth is 3,343psi.
It happened in a fraction of a second. There was no suffering.
Friendly suggestion: be serious and use SI units.
There's plenty of suffering going on as a result of this deathtrap mission promoted by a pathological sicko.
Use SI units if you want us to take you seriously
both of these replies never touched a woman
It doesn't matter how quickly it happened. It shouldn't have happened.
It's crazy, sad and ultimately infuriating how one man's stubbornness lead to this catastrophe. David Lochridge was right all way around
Can you explain plz
Despite the hubris and obvious arrogance of Rush, the world needs people like him. Pushing the boundaries, operating at the border of innovation and chaos. It’s how the world moves forward and mankind makes progress and leaps forward.

David is LUCKY to be alive
this video deserves to be like 10 hours, you risked your life for only a 10 minutes special? give this man the honor he deserves and extend this footage.
Pogue did not go on the dive.He remained on the ship.He says they did not know where sub was while it was missing.
@@carolmiller5019looks like you weren't paying attention to the bit between 4:24 - 5:54. The reporter *did* get into the sub for a dive - sure, it was just one to the nearby continental shelf (rather than the titanic), and that dive had to be aborted just as it was starting - but still, he had the cajoles to actually get sealed into that deathtrap for a dive.
i cant believe the network allowed him
Honor? I wouldn't call his effort an honor. As others have aptly pointed out, his smirking humor as to the plebeian design of this craft, moreso in light of current events, is as sad as it is tragic....Hoping for a miracle here.
@@brianadlich4406Why? They used a Logitech F710 Wireless Gamepad lmao. One of the least reliable and cheapest Gamepad a. I still love mine after all of these years but they are very, very unreliable.
As an engineer, I wouldn't get into this if it was sitting on land. Sorry for those lost, but they should have known better.
Not an engineer, still wouldn’t get into this. Absolutely wild that he laughs about how pathetic it’s put together
@@silenz_178in fairness he does say the pressure vessel itself is built in collaboration with Boeing, NASA and UWA. He was just talking about the lights, thrusters other stuff like that which can always fail no matter if you’re in a plane or rocket ship. I honestly think either a current took the thing or it’s stuck somewhere down there by the wreck.
Rebecca ain't crying now
Seeing this video really brings thought to how dangerous of a risk the submersible vessel is, that’s missing.

there are subs that can go deeper than this one. The biggest problem of this sub was lack of better communication system and extra security measures to re-surface incase the main system fails.

I'll bet David is looking back on this experience and he's thankful he survived this event. I'm surprised that sub managed to have 1 successful expedition with all of the red flags surrounding it. These people entrusted their lives in a metal tube that you can't get out of, have hardly any room to move around in, and it was piloted by a videogame controller. What a sad, senseless, and unnecessary way to die. I hope it was quick for all of them.
why would you even go down there, its like putting on a thermal suit and diving into lava hoping it will hold ....WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT
space is literally safer from this rock full of death traps
David's words- "I was crushed" sound so fateful now.
The were crushed. At that depth, we're talking 400 pounds of pressure exerted on the body. They probably just heard a sound of the carbon fiber breaking and that was it.
@@rumblefish9Oh lordy, it's ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE more than that. The average person has roughly 2,800 square inches of skin. The pressure at 12,000 feet is roughly 6,000 PSI. That means that the body at that depth is experiencing the implosive force of over 16,800,000 pounds of force compressing their body into a fine mist.
@@shadowwolf9503it just sounds…so haunting
Other than no way of knowing the submersible's position when communication is lost, the parts from Camping World, the video game controller, 96-ish hours of oxygen, no emergency distress beacon, and no certification.....it's completely safe.
Not to mention they are bolted in there from the outside
It is completely insane how people agreed to participate and finance this scam...

Rest in peace all souls left there.
The CEO said the quiet part out-loud. They invested all their money into the hull of the ship because that is the most mission critical part. They got involved with NASA and Boeing which generates good PR. Then they skimped on the rest: comms, infrastructure, controls and gave it a hyper-minimalist look without any hope of being debug-able, much less fixable 20,000 leagues under the sea.
Exactly
Turns out Boeing and the university of Washington deny having worked with them.

You have more intelligence then some of those people invested in this crazy venture.
So you pay 250 grand to drop 2 hours to the ocean floor...in a tube...to look out thru a little plexiglass porthole at a 110 year old ship wreck? Makes sense to me.
