    I went the opposite route, went down from a new 40 hp tiller on a light 16ft to a 25 hp and am 100% happier {Mercury's}. I feel like a lot of people think that a bigger outboard is just more power, its not. Weight comes into play, with handling and effort to operate. I have a 2 vids on my channel of the 40 hp being too much. 1 vid of Holeshot with lift/torque steer, and another of it porpoising no matter what trim or transom height setting. What I found is that its the weight of the outboard on the transom, not the power that is the limiting factor. The older 2 stroke 40-50 hp outboards were around 180lbs with power trim, the new 4 strokes are 40-65 lb's heavier and thats mainly what created the above listed negative's. Your SSV is really decked out nicely, Im sure with your riggers, gear, passengers etc you are pushing some weight and that 50 hp feels good. My boat being a '93 says rated for 40 hp but back then they probably never imagined a 40 hp Merc weighing 247lb's, half of what the boat itself weighs then adding a gas, battery and driver in the rear.

    Nice I was looking at the toshiba 50hp motors. My transom on my ssv 16 is 15.

    I was wondering can you be given a ticket for running a lager motor than what is rated at?
    And if I where to run a 50 I would get the new Suzuki lean tech. then run a Spot lock on the front for trolling 24 volt lithium.

      Not in Canada. HP ratings are just a guideline here. In the USA you will get a fine. So it depends on your local laws.

    You in Minnesota? I just bought the same boat and it has a Merc 20 I’m afraid it won’t be enough. Where is a good place to buy a used outboard?

    • @shuswapoutdoors
      @shuswapoutdoors  Před 3 lety

      I'm in British Columbia. I'd go 40hp minimum. And after running the 50hp on it for a couple years, the boat could handle a 60hp no problem.

      @@shuswapoutdoors Wow you really think a ssv 16 can handle a 60 hp that weights 210 pounds? Do you think maybe the Hull of the boat might be to thin or the torque on transom? I would love to see a 60 on a SSV 16 for a science experiment see how well it does.

    • @shuswapoutdoors
      @shuswapoutdoors  Před rokem

    Mooie video, alleen jammer van de herrie van het kleine Honda motortje. Ik heb ook een nieuwe Honda BF50 besteld voor mijn visboot. Een Pegazus 450.

    Loved your videos. Thinking of doing the same build, and wanted to skip buying the merc. So 4 years later how has the Honda been? Reliable? And issues. Cheers man

    If the ssv 16 boat is rated for max 40 hp how does it handle the 50? I just bought a new ssv 16 and am trying to decide on an engine

      @shuswapoutdoors  Před 6 lety

      kyle warmerdam now that we have the 50 on it, i would have been disappointed if we put a 40 on it. Imo the 50 is a perfect fit for this boat. One thing to watch is the weight of the motor, we went with the honda because it only weights 216 pounds

      I can see how running a 50 is optimal when cruising across the lake but for trolling purposes does it idle down enough if I'm only running one engine and no kicker

    • @shuswapoutdoors
      @shuswapoutdoors  Před 6 lety +1

      kyle warmerdam nope, idle is 2.8mph, would need a trolling plate or trolling motor for fishing

    • @shuswapoutdoors
      @shuswapoutdoors  Před 6 lety +1

      Even a 40 would troll too fast

    • @seakadventurer1330
      @seakadventurer1330 Před 6 lety +4

      Difference would likely just be a few mph on the top end. Different hp outboards of the same displacement generate the same low end torque and only differ in the upper end of the power band, hole shot and load capacity would be very similar. However, why not maximize hp for weight. For people wanting to run larger lakes I'd recommend just jumping up to the ssv 18 and a 60hp outboard, no replacement for the extra length and beam. I'm partial though, I've owned both and although I appreciate the versatility of a 16 the 18 feels like twice the boat and I can still move it around by hand on its trailer.

    60. Mite as well go up to a 75. A 75 is basically a 90. 90 is close enough to 100 but they don’t make 100s Anymore so going to have to get a 115.

    Nice outfit. What is the risk of going from a 40hp max rated Lund ssv 16 to a 50hp?

    • @shuswapoutdoors
      @shuswapoutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

      Zero. It's all based off of weight. The 50 honda weights less than the max weight rating for the transom.

    Over Powered is not possible! Lol! If it’s rated for the motor, that is what you should run! Fast is fun!

      @shuswapoutdoors  Před 3 měsíci

      It's rated for a 40, so 50 is a little over, but I think it's a perfect side fir the boat
