great video, after watching numerus others I tried my first sheep skin and the fur slipped, very disappointing. I am ready to try again, is there anything different for a sheep skin? Are these tanned hides washable?
Great video! Do one on changing the impeller
When the time comes, I will, but that may be 5+ years from now.
Hey, saw some of your other videos and saw the posts stopped abruptly, hope youre well!
I'm all good. I was put in youtube jail for having a video of my kid driving our boat. Kinda dampered my motivation to make videos. I'll get back to it soon
@@shuswapoutdoors Yeah understandable, creating and posting content is a lot more work and hurdles than people realize, appreciate the videos you have posted and glad youre good though! Take care
Nice caribou!
Thanks, not the biggest guy out there, but I was happy to get him after 8 days not seeing any on a solo hunt.
If you were going to privately buy a used 2007 50 HP 4-stroke honda motor, what would you recommend having inspected or serviced prior purchasing? Planning to take it to local mechanic. Thanks!
The cylinder compression, and the lower end.
I'm just did the yearly maintenance on my boat, and this video helped a ton. Thank you!!
Glad it helped, and thanks for watching
El estar del honda 30 presios
Meh?
Excellent tutorial on yearly maintenance! No rambling, and solid advice on do’s..do nots..and lubricants + tools needed.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
do you know any other way ho to change oil and how t make vending in trim ?
What?
Dragon Fly has a nice simmer. Which can be very good for rice or beans.
Its the best stove going for cooking
Fantastic guide! I have previously tanned hides, and my results were not as good as yours. I plan to use your instructions later this year, and hope to see a massive improvement in my hides. Thanks so much!
I'm glad you've found it useful, and good luck with your next hide!
Thank you so much for the outstanding video! I wish I had found this before starting my first tanning project. Tanning a coyote hide for my wife to use, and the measurement of the salt bath I was advised to use was off, and started to lose fur, so I put it in the freezer until I could find a solution. I will try to save it now. If you have the time, I would appreciate tips on coyote tanning. I'm subscribing to your page now... Thank you so much!
There is no saving a hide. If the hair is falling out, it's too late. Toss it out. Predators have an added step of degreasing. Either a tanning degreser or something like white gas can be used. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your post, appreciate the detail and explanation. Question: During the pickle stage, (about 11:00 of your video) the emphasis on skin down and insuring contact with fluid, could a press or device be used to "hold everything under the solution" ? I envision a plastic grate or similar that would push hide under solution and insure contact. (or is this just overkill and not necessary? 😁) Thanks
You don't want to weigh the hide down. That can compress the hide and cause the pickle to be pressed out of the area, causing dry spots even though it is under the pickle. You want it to float loose.
Lol well I've got a 25hp honda on my ssv 16 and feel i have plenty of power i guess that's the difference in people 😮.
It's nice having the extra power whenever it's needed
Conclustion: not worth it. Downvote and get a merino shirt. They are awesome
Lol
Amazing video brother, could you point me in the direction on where to purchase your tanning solutions? Thank you
Google, you can get the supplies from a lot of different companies. Pick one close to you so shipping is reasonable
Hello mate, the leather outer of the boot is not waterproof. Leather is not waterproof. Nubuck leather works in dry abrasive conditions and keeps them breathable but not good in wet conditions. You're supposed to wax your boots twice a season in order to keep them waterproof. Lowa even has a cream that you can put on after each trip to keep them conditioned and water-resistant. But I use the fail-safe Granger's boot wax or Kenatrek boot wax. Also, if you’re going through the brush and/or dew you should wear gaiters so water doesn’t drip down your trousers and into your boots, that could’ve been what happened to you. I also wear High/Tall 10.5 inch Lowa boots so I can feel confident walking through puddles, creeks and dew. I think my Lowa boots are the best boots on the market. I have the Lowa Hunter Evo Extreme, Insulated and non-insulated GTX and the Lowa Tibet Evo Hi GTX and they all perform and they all perform in conditions. I hope this helps.
Lol, I used lowas cream and spray twice a year. The boots leaking is a GTX issue, but the quality of the boots as a whole is the fail. Plus, there warranty customer service in Canada is garbage.
Been eye balling these for a while. One question: The outer shell has a nice size gauntlet sized opening to go over your rain jacket or puffy. How does it compare to the insulated portion of the glove? Meaning, does the inner glove have a wide enough opening to go over a puffy jacket or will it bunch up the cuff/wrist portion of the jacket?
The inner glove has a bit of elastic, so it wouldn't fit over a puffy. I haven't noticed any bunching of material....
Great show Love the fact that it’s not somebody’s talking head all thru it Sometimes less is more👍🏻 Love the sounds and beautiful surroundings
Thanks for the feedback and watching!
I am very interested in learning about tanning a black bear.
Noted
Might have to get a similar stone and improve my sharpening, since my knives seem to be getting more expensive....
Thanks for watching
I wore a merino top for the whole of the coved lockdown and I have 20 year old merino tops still as good as new so its clear all merino is not equal. The cheapest stuff Ive bought is still going strong after 20 years
Thanks for watching
What brand do you use that lasts that long?
MSR Dragonfly - god I cannot remember when I bought it, more than 20 years ago and probably nearer to 30years ago (not sure when they started making them!) I have been loving my Trangia and alcohol stoves in recent years for the simplicity- but the Dragonfly has that simmer control for ‘real food cooking’ works anywhere , on the snow above 11.000ft and it is the only stove that I find bombproof reliable to match the Trangia - my Dragonfly works as well today as all those years ago, what an investment! The ONLY (two things - might be overkill for one person - subjective) downside to this stove is the noise. It sounds out around the valley like a jet fighter plane - a consideration for ‘stealth camping’. Last thing I love about this thing is how the fuel (petroleum) in my case lasts making it my cheapest to run and I NEVER worry about running out of fuel, it’s cheap to run and lasts multiple trips. It’s a damn keeper and I do not believe anything over these years compares to it. I have a Soto Windmaster for lightweight day walking / emergency use but this is having issues with less than 2 years use… probably I could have been kinder in use and stowing it when it got wet in inclement weather BUT, those issues have never presented with the Dragonfly/Trangia systems- which is why I consider these to be bombproof keepers!
Great info, thanks for watching
How do the sirius ii fit compared to the Alaskas? Fit close? Can’t find anywhere to see how they fit, I have the scarpa wrangells now
Synthetics makes people stink....
Big deal
What about cotton and hemp?
Also garbage in the mountains ⛰️
Get a mic man
Lol, one day when I make money off these videos
I owned and sold this jacket……I really liked it except for one thing. The neck opening was very narrow. If I was wearing a tee underneath I could zip it up but with any layers with collars or hoods it was a no-go. As an outer layer piece I don’t know why it was designed that way.
I love the cut and fit o the jacket. I have no issues with it even while wearing three layers underneath
I like this video. I don't agree with the conclusion but the points are fair and you bring up great points that I didn't consider. Excellent work!!
Cheers 🍻, and thanks for watching
Is the process the same for a cowhide?
Yes, but it won't be soft unless you shave it. The leather is too tick
I went the opposite route, went down from a new 40 hp tiller on a light 16ft to a 25 hp and am 100% happier {Mercury's}. I feel like a lot of people think that a bigger outboard is just more power, its not. Weight comes into play, with handling and effort to operate. I have a 2 vids on my channel of the 40 hp being too much. 1 vid of Holeshot with lift/torque steer, and another of it porpoising no matter what trim or transom height setting. What I found is that its the weight of the outboard on the transom, not the power that is the limiting factor. The older 2 stroke 40-50 hp outboards were around 180lbs with power trim, the new 4 strokes are 40-65 lb's heavier and thats mainly what created the above listed negative's. Your SSV is really decked out nicely, Im sure with your riggers, gear, passengers etc you are pushing some weight and that 50 hp feels good. My boat being a '93 says rated for 40 hp but back then they probably never imagined a 40 hp Merc weighing 247lb's, half of what the boat itself weighs then adding a gas, battery and driver in the rear.
Thanks for watching
Great video, I was excited to try out the stone glacier and when I finally did I was not impressed. The fit is bizarre. Choking my neck, tons of bicep room and tight on the wrist. Idk what’s going on.
If you look at Kurt and most of the main guys at SG, they are all tall lanky guys. If you're a more muscular body type, the fit may be weird. ( just a guess )
After seeing that title i kenw bro was gonna cook up the absolutel lowest IQ take ever.
😄 🤣
@@shuswapoutdoors but hey I'd like to see you compare merino to other fabrics like alpaca or possum and other things that aren't talked much about
I'd never waste my m9ney on those. I wish natural fibers preformed as well as synthetics, but unfortunately they don't, especially on long backpack trips
Is the process the same for all animals? I want to tan rabbit hides, deer and coyotes hides I have? Great video and thank you so much. Your mounts are all awesome. God bless you
Yes, it is
Thanks for the review . I just ordered a pair this morning. How do you recommend caring for them ?
The nikwax boot stuff works well
@@shuswapoutdoors Thank you
Found this exact knife underneath the Thirsty Goat Bar in Lajitas Golf Resort in west Texas. I used to work Maintenance there and I literally just found this knife lying there. I snagged it as quick as I could. FREE BENCHMADE KNIFE!!! 😃 Who'd of thunk?
Very cool! They are great knives!
What did I do wrong that my edges are super hard? Is that cuz I didn't stretch it enough? Too much Tanning oil?
No such thing as too much tanning oil. Did you get all the flesh off the edges? Did you stretch them as it dried? How much of the edge is hard?
You have the later model in your thumbnail.... how annoying
Meh
Are you wearing an older version of the Kenai jacket than the one currently stocked by Kuiu? It seems like you are, but I'm not certain.
No clue, it is a couple years old, and kuiu updates its clothing all the time...
I just love the modifications you made to your boat. What a great informative video. Thank you 👍🏽
Thanks
Good job 👌🏽
Cheers
Ive thought about going to an ssv just wish I could fish out of one first. Currently have two boats one is a 14' with a 68" beam and the other is a 16' with an 82" beam. The difference between the two is night and day as far as felt stability although they are both capable boats for the size. I've had my eye on an 18 ssv for a while as an all around boat but wondering how stable they are. With that bit of extra beam on the 16 my whole family can lean on one side and you wouldn't even think of it. Not so much on the 14.
Very usefull video. Great filming and you explained it short and precisely - very professional, thank you! Do you have a video of replacing imppellers on a honda 4 stroke engine. I have a Honda BF50A and i cant find anything.
Thanks so much! I don't, maybe is a couple years I'll need to replace mine
How about waterproof?
Great! And they are very breathable for an insulated boot. By far the best boots I've used
Great video😊😊😊... I'd like to get the 18-footer...
Some days I wish I hade the 18 too
@@shuswapoutdoors 👍
It's been about a year with your Hanwag Sirius II boots. What do you say about them now ?
Unfortunately, after a few weeks of having them, I found a 6" long slice in the leather from the manufacturer process. I returned them, but there weren't any replacements in all of north America. So I went with the Scarpa Manta Techs.
@@shuswapoutdoors That's bad news. You had excellent service from your last pair of Scarpas. I can't wear Scarpas, they are too narrow for me. Best regards.
Now I see Scarpa offers some models with a wide fit option. Maybe I will give the Kailash Plus GTX a try someday.
The rubber rand and soles on my Tibets were completely destroyed after 10 months of pretty hard use. Fit was pretty good, but I've been looking for a more durable boot since. Currently running Crispi Briksdal and although a lot lighter they have been more durable than the Tibet.
It seem like the quality of the tibets has gone downhill. I'm a little leary of Crispi boots. I listened to a podcast a few years ago where the owner of Crispi said that the reason their boots are so comfortable out of the box is because they use soft materials to make them that aren't as durable as normal boots.
Any updates?
It's the bet rain gear hands down, both top and bottoms are still going strong
Over Powered is not possible! Lol! If it’s rated for the motor, that is what you should run! Fast is fun!
It's rated for a 40, so 50 is a little over, but I think it's a perfect side fir the boat
In the Norwegian Army there is a saying that goes something like «flis er for kalde amerikanere» basically “synthetics are for cold Americans” in Norway we use wool(not just merino) and mesh. We’ve been dealing with the cold for hundreds of years before the us was discovered. Synthetics are great, until you fall in a river or get hit with some ice rain. After that you will be begging for some wool. When US marines come to Norway to learn winter survival they usually borrow Norwegian gear after the under ice portion of training.
And who has the superior army? Lol 😆
@@shuswapoutdoors well id say there is a reason the Americans send their soldiers to Norway once a year to learn from us. Very few nations beat Norway, Sweden and Finland in winter combat. Definitely not the Americans.
US Marine here. I'm from the northern Midwest. Your winters are not any colder than ours (-40C). While your winters are longer, I learned my cold weather survival by virtue of living it. That said.... The youtuber that made this video is out of his mind. Merino Wool FTW!!!
@@jonvanwyk2026 i know you have some winter. Ive lived in the US, your winter some how feel warmer. I meant no disrespect to the marines tho, always fun to have you guys in town. I remember when I was a child and the marines would come to my small town in the north every year. Find memories.
@@shuswapoutdoors what a lame response. Grow up. Further more, go pick a random Army base to visit. Go look at our infantry units. Fat. Sick. These are not fit men ready to make war. Physical standards lowered to accommodate ‘inclusivity.’ Bet if you go to a Norwegian base you’ll see fit men who look like they are ready to make war, who have a sense of national pride and take their role seriously. I’m not happy about it, but superior? The only thing worse than being a smart aleck for the sake of being a smart aleck is being delusional and a smart aleck. Now let’s everyone pull out our dicks and wave them around for comparison’s sake like a bunch of sophisticated Starbucks clientele.
