Bonisolli and Marton are absolutely stunning in their finale to Giordano's ANDREA CHENIER as the poet Chénier (he lived at the time of the Trench Revolution) and his beloved MADDALENA de Coigny sing of their love and impending death at the end of the opera as both go to the guillotine knowing they will never be separated because of their love. The musicality is tremendous, they both reach their extraordinary high notes and sing dreamatically as if on the opera stage. It is one of the great finales in all of Opera. It is Umberto Giordano's masterpiece. It truly is a very sad fact that tenor FRANCO BONISOLLI who was so great never got the true regognition he deserved because he was singing at a time when Franco Corelli was still on the scene as was Carlo Bergonzi and then Placido Domingo and Pavarotti not to mention other tenors like José Carreras, Giuseppe Giacomini, Carlo Cossuta and many more. He was one of the top tenors of his day and yet hardly anyone mentions him today in 2023. It's a real shame and tragedy that this has occurred.

Bonisolli took no B.S from any conductor and Von Karajan was notorious for making Tenors suffer , he hated tenors. I was in the chorus for a Trovatore rehearsal with Bonisolli and Karajan was taking the tempo at a ridiculous pace which no tenor could take so Bonisolli mentioned to him to slow down upon which Karajan went even faster and that's when Franco blew his top at Karajan called him a Bastardo and promptly threw his sword into the orchestra pit and stormed off stage. Of Course this is what Karajan wanted and had Franco fired and Domingo took his place upon which i quit .They didn't miss me one bit but replacing Franco with Domingo hurt the whole production and to boot Domingo got the last laugh on Karajan because he had him transpose the main aria down a whole tone because he couldn't hit the High C or even a B .

_Singers have a responsibility to protect their voices from wear-&-tear. Nature gives gifts, sometimes, randomly w / o evaluating the person ( s ) gifted._

Show me how he has strained his voice? He had a technique close to perfection, sang many different roles for more than 40 years and never had a problem with his voice. So your comment has no arguments.

@@cliffgaither Well, it's about choice. I loved his voice when he was young and love it when he was older. It was about whether he ruined his voice (or as you called strained) and he didn't in either case. If he did, he wouldn't be able to sing almost up until his death of 65. And keep it as strong and fresh.

Ok ! I know how it is in Opera w / the fans & their favorite singers.
It's sometimes difficult to be critical of a singer in the presence of a fan & a fan can stand & defend a singer.
You're right ! It's about choice. Franco Bonisolli has given you many, many hours of listening to his magnificent voice. I have to respect that as a fan of this music.
      but ...
I heard F.B. sing The Duke ! It was one of the first times I really listened to him & I was mesmerized by the super-quality of his singing ; so-much-so, his voice made me question F.C. for a few moments. The fact that he made me question my favorite tenor of all time, was an example of his vocal gifts ; unfortunately, I'm almost parasitic when it comes to singers & expect them to always mesmerize w / their singing. It is / was a bad trap some of us fall into so willingly ...
Franco Bonisolli's voice was a great contribution of beauty to this long, long history of vocal wonders.
I let him spoil me, even against himself.
As a mutual fan of this music & its singers, I offer to you my apologies for doubting your discerning Bonisolli ear !
      and ...
I will delete my arrogant comment about casting doubt on _your_ ability to still remember the greatness of that man's voice !

Less like a love duet when they sing it, more like a duel. She has the edge in vocal cream and musical suitability; he's somewhat strained. Odd how they don't even really look at each other. She attempts to interact with him but he's totally focused on the auditorium. I guess acting wasn't really his thing. He's always struck me as a macho rooster on the stage. There's a school of Italian tenors who are totally self-absorbed and obsessed with high notes. Less about art, more about ego.
