A Real Discussion About Don Garber

- Don Garber has MLS Commissioner since 1999. And since that time, MLS has had plenty of highs and lows. It's safe to say the Don does things a little different compared to the rest of the world of soccer.
Is he good? Is he bad? Does he deserve all of the hate? Let's find out, and have a real conversation.

I like Don Garber, he took MLS to the next level.
Salary Cap is important for health clubs, MLS is a success today because it does not repeat the mistakes of the original NASL.
Salary Cap is also important for the reason that Danny said in the video, it is not good for the League to always have the same champion as happens in European leagues.
Regarding MLS All Star, in the 2000s, MLS beat most of its opponents. In recent years this has no longer happened, not because of the opponent but because of the number of substitutions in the game. In the 2000s, the number of substitutions was normal for friendlies.
Example - In the 2005 MLS All Star there were 5 substitutions, in the 2023 MLS All Star there were 17 substitutions.
With a lot of substitutions it becomes impossible for a team to have a style of play, or a good performance. In the past MLS wanted to prove that they could beat European teams, today that no longer matters to them.
All Commissioners are hated by the fans of their sport. But it's least warranted with MLS/Garber. MLS team Salaries have DOUBLED every 5 or 6 years.
True but also please stop with your goofy comments all over.
@@elicarlson7682 Which comments? That MLS payroll actually double every 5.5 years? Just the truth for the edification of the people who cry about the "salary cap" .
@@davidday2373 mostly pro/rel and business decision comments
He feels like the coach that's gotten the team to a certain point, but is kinda fumbling trying to take that next step. He's done wonders for this league, but lately I feel like they make so many questionable decisions
Every commissioner besides Adam Silver has rightfully earned hatred. Manfred for trying to scapegoat a systemic problem, destroying minor league baseball and doing everything to the game besides making it more accessible to view.
The NFL commissioner has a laundry list of shit gone wrong. NHL’s commissioner can’t make up his mind on what will bring the league success and yeah Grabber’s a greedy asshat who will sacrifice the growth of his sport to the highest bidder.
I see DannyT I click
Wet hair is wild 👍
Don Garber is just a messenger for the MLS club owners.
I'm with you in that I like how there's a variety of winners every year instead of one team or two teams winning every year like in most other soccer leagues.
As a Charlotte FC, I have bigger beef with my owner who brought us the team…
All nfl owners shouldnt be trusted they have other priorities remember they killed the old nasl.
Ranking of MLS Cup rings!
On the matter of increasing Team Payroll, its a handful of owners would keep voting down 👇 on increasing spending.
I care more about sustainability than parity, and i think having a salary cap to keep franchises from overspending and falling apart is a good thing.
Don garber wants complete control of the sport in the USA. He wants what the MLB , NBA, NFL have. He wants to monopolize the sport , which is another reason he wants to end the US OPEN CUP. He wants MLS to split revenue with other MLS clubs not USL and other leagues. If it were up to him he would end the USL. They take profits away from the MLS. Same reason they decided to create a san diego club for 500m instead of already bringing up the san deigo Loyal who were ready to go MLS. thousands of supporters , new and improved training facilities. A stadium. Instead they pretty much told the loyal to go f*** them selves. Fuck don garber.
So I have two reasons why I don't like Garber. First, I'm a Crew fan. I can't forget the attempted move. The second, is because I'm also a fan of a lower league club.
His moves are great for MLS, but have a tendency to damn lower league sides anywhere near a club. Does that mean they kill them right away? Sometimes, other times no. But, people flock to the bigger team, even if they have to travel farther when a local club is right there.
MLS has create an entire 3rd Tier league, along with a full-on academy system league wide. There's no reasonable expectation that any Commissioner of one league would/should help another league. I'm a USC Trojans fan, we're in the B1G TEN now... the "Conference of Champions", the PAC-12 is no more. There are certain hard truths in sports/business. MLS can't sit around worrying about the USL -- no fan of MLS (or of Soccer or of sports) should expect that of that league's Commissioner.
Love the channel. Hey Danny... just an idea for a future video. Top 10 soccer movies? There are quite a few.
Garber should not be getting credit for the league not folding, Phil Anschutz is the one who saved the league
"But, but, but... he's an evil billionaire... we soccer purists hate billionaire owners."
I wish the owners would just simplify the cap rules.
Can’t wait to see you rank mls jerseys! Chicago Fire bout to be through the roof!
I believe there might not even be an MLS without Don Gabrer. I also think the league needs new ideas.
New ideas...? Meaning what, anything specific that you have in mind?
@davidday2373 Don Garber did a great job turning MLS into a thriving business, but it still isn't even the most popular soccer league in the US. For example, why are we playing preseason games in Asia? The US market is the one that needs to be developed most. This preseason tour should have been here in the US against teams people in the US watch. Imagine a game in New York against Palmeiras? They could have it on prime-time television and make a spectacle. They could invite celebrities from other sports and entertainment. This could have been a celebration of soccer in this country against Mexican, MLS, and South American giants. I'm sure that would have generated a ton of money and would actually attract the fans we need. Instead, they flew off to countries that will never sign up for the MLS season pass because they are on opposite time zones. It's the same reason no one here watches the Asian leagues. We need someone who understands soccer and how to sell soccer to soccer fans and beyond. I think they should also replace a lot of their media talent with popular youtubers. Right now, all of their on-air talent feel like corporate maniquins. I also think there should be one game per week free on CZcams. I think if MLS focuses more on winning over soccer fans in this country, the league will take that next step and become a mainstream league in this country. I really think Don Garbers' vision has been realized. But we need new ideas. Messi is the ultimate DP. We will never sign another player with more fame and notoriety than Messi. The DP should now be phased out. They should have something like a flat salary cap. I think it should be $50 million. I would be happy with half that.
@@stevenygabbyperez695 Its not either or, MLS will attempt to grow in the U.S. and globally. The Apple deal demonstrates that. Preseason games in Asia doesn't detract from fandom in the U.S. We have the Coachella Invitational going on in So Cal, currently. A bunch of MLS teams in one place, multiple matches, its kinda cool. No Commissioner can force people to be interested in a sport.
@stevenygabbyperez695 Focusing on the U.S. market/fans, I'd agree is more important. But having these international preseason games doesn't detract from that. We'll have Messi all season, plus Leagues Cup vs Mexican teams, plus ConcaChampions vs North American teams, plus the Copa Interamericana, Messi vs Flamengo in a real game.
CZcamsrs as commentators?? Okay... honestly, commentators are all mid, no one's that great or that bad.
There's nothing wrong with the DP system we have. The average Team Salary has been doubling every 5 to 6 years, that's steady growth. Cut it down to 4 years and MLS Avg Salary will be at $32M to $35M by 2027, top teams probably at $45M maybe $50M.
I think the issue is that he will now be on his 25th year in charge. To me whenever somebody is at the same job for so long it ultimately will hurt.
This isn’t just a soccer thing, it’s a life thing. Think of someone at your job who has been there for over 20 years. They hate new ideas, they take forever to adapt to change, and they believe they are above it all and can do no wrong.
That’s why these position should be like politicians, have term limits, or at least have to run to keep your position. When you have new people coming it, they bring fresh ideas, new perspectives, and will help the league in the long run.
We are at a point where the league isn’t beholden to the almighty dollar. The league needs to turn their focus to the game and leas on the business. Cause no matter what, fans of the game will never care about the bottom line first and foremost. That’s why they are fans. And as long as Don cares more about money, the fans and him will never see eye to eye
a rational, honest conversation talking about the bad stuff but also the good stuff he has done. Must watch for MLS fans
2024 jersey ranking please 🙏🏿
That hair is something lol good stuff
All sports leagues should change commissioners every 10-15 years at the most.
I don’t get it. DG has made the league profitable and a sellers league. We are building good talent and the league has improved….a lot. I don’t agree with pulling out of the USOC, however, if we want teams to take it seriously then US Soccer needs to invest in the tournament and actually spend money to eyeballs on the tournament.
The salary cap has to stay, it can be raised as long as there is a reasonable salary floor.
A few years ago I ran into Tom Fox who was the one who negotiated the return of the Quakes in 08. He had some Quakes gear on and before I even realized who it was I was stating how John Fisher was cheap etc. He got mad and pulled the old "who you know who I am" card and said that he had a plaque inside of our stadium. The guy probably knows Fisher so I don't blame him for getting irritated by my comments. Simple answer is that things need to change for the better.
I would love for Fisher to sell the quakes to someone who’s actually ambitious
Amazing edit ngl
Danny with all respect, I'm here to ask if you'll be interested in joining for a pod
Be real. Precourt will never be exceeded as the most hated figure in MLS history.
I think you put it perfectly. There was a point where MLS needed a business mind just to survive, but I think we've moved past that point. Well of course MLS has to keep growing, I think the changes that will help the league grow are more related to how the game itself is operated versus simply maximizing profit.
Yea we are past that point don garber will now start doing more damage then good. He wants to monopolize the sport of soccer in the USA. He wants the MLS to get all profits when it comes to “Professional Soccer” in the USA. He wants what the NBA, NFL, MLB have. If it were up to him he would end the USL tomorrow!! They take away profits from the MLS. He wants to end the US OPEN CUP. He doesnt care about the sport of soccer in america. He just wants to completely monopolize it like the NFL , MLB, and NBA have done for there sports in the states.
I don't love him. I don't hate him. I respect that he has kept soccer sustainable in the US. All the soccer people swear they have the keys but their leagues keep failing.
Donny G the goat commish
The million dollar question would be who will leave his position as commissioner first Garber or Gary Bettman in NHL
I appreciate your forgiveness of Crew fans hating Garber.
Dude had a chance to say the right thing before last years cup to the press. He could have said we almost really messed up with leaving Columbus and have learned a lot about what makes a successful franchise in this league. But instead “Those times were tough for everyone involved”.
Yes. All of this.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it let the asset keep maturing until it isn’t anymore. The product on the field has been improving as a result of the money. The investments into infrastructure and academies are expensive. I think they’ll start spending more and more each window until the new CBA is in place. Hopefully they double the current cap and do annual percentage increases like they’ve been doing
Dude, see a barber. Also, Don Garber is a genius.
If you have a commissioner hates Football. That's a red flag and it's not soccer, ITS FOOTBALL!
Next up: Jersey time!
The main reason why MLS has outlived the original NASL is Don Garber. BTW: How many of those hashtag warriors remember the state of American soccer in 1985, when the only vaguely organized version of the sport was put on by the NCAA for approximately 3 month seasons? I do, and it was not pretty.
Do MLS in CCL Part 6: LAFC
The Last One
The Soprano ending....
Garner have been good as commissioner just didn’t like the decision they were was trying to do with u.s open cup.
One can understand what Don Garber is there to do as MLS commissioner,i.e. make money. He came with the same philosophy (from a NFL background) like many MLS investor-owners in their single-entity model. I think the MLS is at a crossroads, e.g. wants to create more games, but still limit themselves with squad restrictions. Unless there are miracle changes MLS seems to be plateauing with the depth and quality. In the end, Don Garber is there to only make money, not grow the game (that’s the role of USSF and perhaps non-profit organizations)
Lies. MLS keeps adding better and better players. And by the way, any and all improvement requires REVENUE. Ligue 1 reduced its league from 20 to 18 teams because they're expecting to DROP in REVENUE in their next Broadcasting deal. AND they lost MESSI to MLS.... lost Neymar to Saud... and is losing Mbappe next...
MLS has decent South American players yes. Not American players though. Evidence, the MLS final had less than five American-born players starting in the 22 players. Sorry, but it’s extremely naive to compare Ligue 1 to MLS. Ligue 1 produces world-class players consistently every year, transferring them to the Premier League. And France is two-time World Cup champions. MLS @@davidday2373
I personally love what garber is doing and don't understand his hate
Call me crazy but I wouldn’t consider raising the salary cap to something like $20 million a bad thing. $20 million is still a reasonably low amount, it’s something that every owner can afford to spend, and if you keep the designated players/under 22 initiatives/young DP… You could have really quality rosters. $20 million is reasonable. It goes up quite a bit, but it doesn’t allow the free-for-all that destroyed the NASL in the 1980s or creates the lack of parody like you see in Germany.
You don't understand the "Salary cap"... its not a real "cap". All 29 teams could spend $20 million on Player Salary right now under the current "Salary Cap." But they choose not to. ACTUALLY, if there were a "Hard" Salary Cap of $20 million, we wouldnt have Messi and friends.
@@davidday2373 you might be the one that doesn’t understand the salary cap. The salary cap for your roster is currently a hard salary cap at $5.21 million. There are current exceptions. You are allowed three designated players that do not count against the salary cap. You are allowed to give players up to an additional $1.2 million on a GAM contract and an additional $1.6 million on a TAM contract. You can also have three additional players on your roster age 22 or younger on a 22 initiative contract, which only partially counts against your hard salary cap. There is also the young designated players. You can only give as much GAM/TAM contracts as you currently have total GAM/TAM to spend. Essentially every team has around $5 million of each but very few teams actually have that exact amount as GAM/TAM is often dealt in trades.
@@gracielynn9623 Teams find a way to only spend $10-12 million on their roster, while other teams spend 2x and 3x as much. And anyway, the average team salary has doubled every 5 to 6 years (since 2010 or so). If MLS squeezes that down to 4 years, by 2027 we'll be at $32M-$35M Avg., with high-end teams possibly at $45M to $50M.
telling the fans that they're too stupid to criticize legue leadership is crazy
"The MLS spends 8,000,000,000 on stadiums!" did you mean the taxpayers?
Actually no, most MLS stadiums are not paid for by public funds.
Don garber was appointed by kraft a cheap owner which is why the salry cap hasnt been raised if it was mls would already be the best league in the americas, how do most teams play less than mexico and brazil okay top 5 in europe i get but not less than latin america.
U lost a bet??
Rule #1 in American sports: Boo the commissioner
garber is just the front person for the owners and the owners don't care about growing the league or growing the game they care about growing their bank accounts, as you point out, money, money, money
MLS owner ONLY care about growing the league and THUS making MORE money. And BTW that's true for every sports league in the world. The president of LaLiga cries about the EPL "doping" their teams with "extra money," and that it's not fair.... LOL.
They need to stop changing the sport and start changing the league.
fair for sure... but unfortunately, after what he did it will take a lot for him to not get booed in Columbus. Believe me though, there are a small number of fans who say we should forgive him.. major facepalm there..🤦♂
After what he did... meaning make the league a success? saving the league from dying on the vine? fostering exponential growth in team "valuations" (at least, if not revenue)? creating MLS NEXT Pro and a full academy system under each team? The Columbus/Austin thing that never happened -- that was not Garber's idea. There were clauses in the purchase that Precourt used to force things. In the end, Garber/MLS/Crew fans managed to keep the "Crew" in Colubus and move Precourt.
@@davidday2373 sorry that I won’t feel the way you do about a sports commissioner!
Why not just talk in a normal way?
I don't care people say about the negatives of SUM. Their strategy was incredibly effective at getting MLS and USMNT distribution and exposure and growing the popularity of the sport.
What was that strategy... what did SUM do?
Miami embarrassed MLS in their world tour
Make the MLS open to everyone either pro/rel and get rid of the salary cap and any Team with a silly NFL styled name or soccer club instead of football club and change from MLs to MLF or anything that says football instead of “soccer”! Then MLS can become a top 5 league. Maybe even clear number 1 in some years
MLF is too close to MILF and alot of people will meme the hell out of it. Plus if you have people trying typing in MLF trying to find highlights they might find something they're not looking for.
🤡
I'd take a NFL/NHL/NBA name over another FC or City FC any day. Hell, I'm surprised we don't have a MLS team named Wanderers or Rangers yet. Those are just as common as FC.

LOL. Stop. MLS would wither away by doing that. If MLS had Relegation, from 2023 to 2024, MLS would be losing: Galaxy, Colorado, Miami, Toronto. Hmm... I wonder if the USL-Miami and USL-Toronto, USL-Galaxy could afford to keep their rosters. No Messi... yeah, great plan.
