I quite liked it, pretty sure that first shot we see of the main corridor of the ship through the door was bait for people that believed the episode to be set in the TARDIS. Some of those pillars straight up look like the TARDIS console.

In saying that, it doesn’t feel like a special episode (much like last week) it just feels like a regular episode of Doctor Who, there’s no celebration of the shows history in the episode that much.

This episode was gold, I loved how they showed growth in donna- mainly with her priorities being getting back to her family. If she was just the same as she'd been 15 years ago it'd be kind of silly.
Also I love doctor who having not amazing quality, obviously good quality is great and awesome, but to me and for doctor who the quality not being 100% is so charming and classic.

I really liked that they never really said what the monster is - they just gave us slightly goofy but wildly unnerving special effects and a creeping sense of wrongness and left it as that, and I thought it was perfect. I've been left with sinister vibes and a sense of profound joy and it might honestly be one of my favourite episodes of new who ever.

They did say what they were. These "not-thing"s are beings from outside the universe. They were shaped by the strong emotions within the universe and wanted to become something. The strong emotions they felt were mostly hatred, pain, and war, so that's what shaped their mind. They want to go into that universe to start a war and to actually exist.
In general it kindof reminded me of the boneless. A being from outside our universe trying to understand it and then invade it

This episode felt like season 4 and I'm here for it; it was a rollercoaster of emotions (especially the last 15 minutes). the fact that it was just the two of them didn't make it less special; actually, it was the opposite: we had the chance to enjoy these two fantastic characters (and actors) on "their own" (they weren't technically alone iykwim). and also, I LOVE the creepy and haunting doctor who episodes (e.g. blink, midnight, the empty child). It reminded me a lot of waters on mars, I don't know why. Absolutely amazing and, I think, better than the previous one (they are both reeally good but this tops the star beast imo). Peak doctor who I think. The episode had everything that makes doctor who special: the chills, perfectly written characters, the quirkiness and the charm of the unknown.

I'm truly just devastated we have to say goodbye to David again after just one more episode.
Tonight REALLY felt like Doctor Who back to it's best again and David man, he might some how be putting in his best performances as the Doctor that he ever has!?!? I can't explain it but, 14 hits different some how. Catherine too is just phenomenal and RTD has proven he can still write great Doctor Who!
Excited for Ncuti, but to take David away right as he's hitting his stride in the role again is just criminal, give that man a whole season please!😭

Also glad they didn't forget that the doctor knows hundreds of billions of languages, even then it's perfectly fair to say he just happens to not know this one.

i agree with basically everything you said, this was way way better than star beast and the tension and atmosphere was incredible! the goofiness of the effects makes it more charming in my opinion, it almost adds to the weirdness of the evil entities, the only weak bit for me was the green screen as you mentioned. the highlight for me has to be when donna was left behind and we can see the ship exploding and slowly getting closer and closer, catherine tate's portrayal of fear in that moment was fantastic and it really struck a chord with me because it makes me think of all the people who the doctor doesn't come back to save and how they must feel in their final moments, when they have to come to terms with the fact that the tardis won't swoop in to save them... but of course it does for donna! really though this episode was so great, there were so many other moments that were just as incredible too. i agree with the 8/10

  • @That_Random_British_Dude
    @That_Random_British_Dude Před 7 měsíci +10

Episode was definitely a 9/10 for me. Lack of Sonic really helped make the Doctor think his way out of the situation, the Midnight and Among Us vibes with the mimicking and not knowing who the real Doctor and Donna were, the character moments especially with The Doctor wanting to talk to someone about his pain and what he's been through but also not wanting to take those steps to do so. And when the "Particle Accelerator" corridor was revealed, I was shocked! It looked amazing!
My only gripes are the casting choice for Isaac Newton as I'm pretty sure he was English, and it had very little to do with the rest of the episode beyond a recurring gag, but Nathaniel Curtis did a great job anyway, and some of the effects on the Mimics looked kinda goofy, especially Puddle Mimic Donna and the Mimics crawling after the Doctor and Donna while looking like they've got a CZcams filter put over them

It really was such a step up from last week. Has me feeling positive and excited about DW again, for the first time in a while. David & Catherine were brilliant, and RTD has managed to write a two-hander that was actually fun, interesting & exciting (which is a hard task) and it wasn't boring at all. I'm glad that someone else noticed the similarities with some of the music and a few Segun Akinola themes (who I do really miss, even though Murry Gold is also brilliant) and the fx on the faces also reminded me of Miss Evangelista from Silence In The Library. I did find the "horror" moments to be more funny than scary, but they did touch on some really interesting concepts here too, and now that you pointed out it's similar to Scherzo, I can really see that.

I love how the sonic was not super overused like last time, it was used when appropriate. At the start of the episode I was thinking it was the Vashta Nerada because it would be AWESOME to see that monster return. Very funny episode with great moments of confusion and tension. The puzzle of the episode was fun and intriguing + the effects I thought were quite stylised. I feel like VFX was a bit noticeable in some parts but overall pretty good and looked nice. The soundtrack was great as well.

I’ve genuinely never felt happier to say a doctor who episode legitimately made me feel fear/unnerved. The uncanny valley and use of body horror in this episode was nothing short of brilliant. There are aspects of this episode that definitely felt limited (CG in the hallway to name the main one) but the writing, and concept of the episode is brilliant. For me, having a mini season as the 60th rather than something specifically focused on the doctor feels so much more fitting. We had a grand doctor story for the 50th and I’m so happy they havnt rehashed that.
The use of the concepts from midnight and the capaldi episode about graffiti (can’t remember it’s name) really do give this idea of the universe being so much broader. It actually makes me happy about the flux and TC storyline introducing the concept of the other universes because it’s bringing us concepts outside of what is established as the rules of our universe

Just something worth pointing out. Unfortunately, even though I'm sure we were meant to see more of Bernard Cribbins next week, RTD has said that that was all they managed to shoot before he passed. There were some BTS shots that suggested they had shot some other scenes, but I guess they might not have got the coverage they needed to include them. Which is a shame, but I'd rather have the one scene than none at all.

odd comparison here, but in ben 10 omniverse (2012) there is 5th dimensional beings called the contemalia. these beings show themselves as the person who is viewing thems idol. they live outside of the universe, which is what these creatures do. i was fully expecting for RTD to pull a copy of this concept where the doctor and donna just saw each others as idols. i know it sounds cringe but it is such a weird concept for two shows to so.

I really loved it, seeing Tate and Tennant just owning it as both the heroes and villains was amazing. Pacing was great the build up and reveal were great, really loved the voice doing the count down. Also really liked the threat, just these unknown things reflecting what they've been exposed to for who knows how long. How even at the edge of nothingness there could still be something there, formless. Mad respect for the ships captain because of what she would have had to deal with and needed to do could not have been easy. Which I'm amazed by given they're a character with zero real screen time.
I thought Star Beast was fun but this blew it out of the water and it's going to be hard to top. I didn't want to just gush about it so gave it a day to sink in, but it was just a really solid episode with good ideas.

This was impeccable, it exceeded in every aspect of the episode! I found the long arms bit to be honestly quite creepy when I first saw it AND THE SPACE MUSIC! The music that played when the camera was just showing the endless abyss of the edge of the universe had me on edge with it being so brilliant, I was most excited for this one and was not disappointed, crushed The Star Beast in every regard and when I first watched it I thought that it was longer than the star beast just because of the fantastic pacing. I suppose the CGI and stuff looked a little iffy at times but like you said it's Doccy Who and I found it extra creepy and charming. Loved it, great return to form 9/10
Seeing Wilf had me audibly gasp, Bernard Cribbins is the GOAT and made the episode even better for me, even though I'm not too excited for The Giggle as I feel it will have the same pacing issues of The Star Beast I will still cherish every moment with Wilf riding around in it.

As someone who doesn't scrutinize every pixel I just let the episode wash over me and found myself totally absorbed. It was perfection, I loved it and I will be very sad when David Tennant regenerates again.
I think they should actually create a spin-off wherein The Doctor and Donna enter the universe on the other side of the gates from Timeless Child and explore this totally unknown realm. It could run parallel with the next series or come after it. So whilst 15 is putting our universe to rights 14 somehow split during the regeneration into 15 but also remained as 14. Who knows?. but it would be a crime to lose David Tennant a second time.

This episode was seriously good. Like I thought the previous episode was just alright, and I adjusted my expectations because of that. And then this episode really took me by surprise. It definitely reminded me of those more experimental episodes where they're limited in characters and setting but work very hard to work within those limits. Examples I can think of off the top of my head are the classic Edge of Destruction, Midnight (I think this one will be brought up alot in discussion of this episode), and Heaven Sent. Character studies are always very interesting and the threats always have to be creative so that they feel fresh. Throughout the episode I was surprised at all the twists and turns the story was taking and it didn't feel like we were made to feel stupid either. The story set up certain elements and brought them back into the limelight later like any good story should do. Everything in the episode felt authentic and well constructed. Just a brilliant episode overall and, in my eyes, an instant classic.

My NON SPOILER REVIEW in a few words:
This is the episode that has given me the “Doctor Who” is back feeling. A PERFECT mid season episode in a larger series, not the story I’d have told for an anniversary, however, extremely adventurous, fun, scary, and with a real Doctor Who atmosphere. First 60 seconds are a bit silly, but we can allow for a bit of silly. I’m not sure why this episode was shrouded in the most secrecy of all three episodes and why it was sold as the one “with all the surprises” so in that regard also a bit of a let down. But ignoring how it was sold to us, and expectations. It was a thrill ride. Welcome back Doccy Who.

I loved it. This definitely cemented in my mind that Doctor Who and RTD still got it. I liked Star Beast, it did a lot of stuff I hope to see more of, but this had all the classic Who elements I crave in one clean package. Weird sci fi mystery to solve, doctor running around thinking really hard, sensitive, consequential emotional conversations alongside great banter and funny bits.
Bonus points for being a bottle episode. Why are the episodes they write to save on budget always the best? I didn't even realize until the credits that it had really only been Tate, Tennant, and Bernard Cribbins in the entire episode. The DoctorDonna carried the entire special on their own. Really proved they have one of the all time best Doctor-Companion dynamics.
Also managed to get me actually invested in the action, which Who doesn't always pull off. Genuinely creepy visuals with the size/proportion warping. Truly one of the best single episode adventures in years. Can see myself rewatching this; it may even be my new go-to as a first episode to recommend to new viewers.

i really liked this episode! the isaac newton bit was funny, liked the mavity stuff. i loved how long they took with the setup, where you realize the 2 different rooms they're in aren't quite right, but the episode was willing to linger in it, making the creepy atmosphere really tangible. the shapeshifting/shapeless entities were really cool (if a bit goofy, but that got a startled laugh from me, so still a win), i love it when doctor who goes for cosmic horror and leaves stuff unexplained (things like listen, midnight). also got some great character moments, especially from donna.
only downside for me was that it got a bit corridor-y at times, but i'm willing to overlook that

Like come on fandom we made sense of 2 Peter capaldis, the wedding of river song, the timeless child and multiple cannon breaking paradoxes. Maybe after all the shit that happens in this show Issac newtons timeline changed and now he’s not a white guy now can we just appreciate this incredible episode

  • @StrayMaverick
    @StrayMaverick Před 7 měsíci

This episode was incredible. It's an instance of RTD doing the trifecta; the plot, character, and thematic writing here were fantastic. The last episode being about the self also plays a role here, as there are "copies" of the Doctor and Donna as well. Really clever continuance of the last episode. Also having just the Doctor and Donna be in this episode was a stroke of genius, as likely their lasting outing in the Tardis together SHOULD just focus on them. The theme is also less obvious here than Star Beast, but still pays off in spades if analyzed. The idea of some problems having to slowly be dealt with instead of in an instant is here, as the enemies had to be defeated through a slow process, and over thinking actually made them more powerful. This ties into the Doctor having to deal with what happened in The Flux. There's even the clever line at the end when Donna asks whether he'll be okay, and he says he will be "in a million years." Really great stuff.
Also love your content man. Got a sub here for sure. Keep it up!
Edit: Also the song "Wild Blue Yonder" being said to be a war song, and Donna saying she thought it was jolly hits on the idea that 2 things can be true at once, while the villains only view things in one way, like when they said the universe was pure "war." Again, there's a lot here. Lol

Also when Wilfred showed up and he held his hand to his face when he saw the Doctor, I had goosebumps and teared up a little bit. Such amazing writing. One more thing. My prediction in the next special is that Ncuti Gatwa will appear with Millie Gibson and run into David Tennant and Donna Noble and possibly work together. What do you think?

This episode was aboslutely amazing! I loved the slow burn mystery of this one as opposed to last episode's fast paced action and guns. It was so unbelievably fun to think alongside the doctor and donna in this ship and I felt like I was making connections as they did too. The horror of the duplicate doctor and donna growing was rad as hell. David Tennant was in FULL SWING this episode. I can't wait for the Giggle.

Absolutely loved this episode, felt like the next midnight. I loved the callbacks to the chibnall era and I swear I even heard a bit of the flux theme in that scene. Having murray call back to some of seguns themes makes me way more excited than it should, like a proper merging of all the styles of the different eras. Super excited to see where this goes and I feel my purchase of the steelbook for these specials is justified by this episode alone. Recency bias is probably playing some small part, but even besides that I feel confident that this will stay as one of my favorite episodes of DW, classic, nu, or ... whatever we're calling this new show (are the 60th specials part of the new show, nuwho, or in between?).

It was absolutely incredible. From start to end. I was constantly at the end of my seat, questioning everything. The fact that I couldn't tell who was fake and who was real is a true testament to who well written the episode was. The ending nearly broke me as I was very convinced it was over for Donna. The editing was really tripy and was a great amount of Doctor who camp. The pair being broken down by their doubles was heartbreaking especially when the Doctor lost it with the wall. To me it felt like he was punishing himself for putting Donna in danger.

There’s something about body parts being the wrong size that just freaks me out. I was surprised that some of it was practical. I think the music was a bit too loud throughout. The moment where 14 let’s his guard down with fake Donna over flux was amazing, then how upset he is after. I liked the mystery and the concept of the aliens, it’s a nice self conflated little adventure. The aliens reminded me of midnight. Seeing wilf again was so special. Due to rumors, I admit, I was expecting the aliens to take the form of past doctors, and part of me is disappointed we didn’t get that fan service, but I won’t hold it against the episode. Regarding newton, I think it’s misguided to pretend some historical figures weren’t white, it ignores their privilege and paints a rosier image of the past. It also feels like they’re saying non-white history isn’t worth telling, I’d rather they just use more diverse historical figures, like chibs did. That said it’s a 2 min scene and it doesn’t affect the rest of the episode, so I don’t think anyone can say it ruined the episode or anything. They should appreciate the mavity of the situation.

This special was truly everything I wished for the SECOND it was announced Tate and Tennant were returning.
i've mentioned it before but the one thing i was so certain to do was not have expectations for the specials. once i knew there would be three, i didnt want to have expectations on each because i assumed it would be an even field for story arc of some sort. but i cant lie that i didnt have a checklist of what i truly wished would occur. and one thing was: a purely doctor and donna centered episode with a new adventure. not lore heavy, something spectacular that feels like it could have been pulled from their original catalogue, WITH their new growth after the 15 years (for donna) and over 4 billion for the doctor. and boy was i fed!!!
after TSB, my hopes didnt waver but i wasnt sure what to expect. i am astonished with all the character developments with both fourteen and donna, the visual physical affection between the two best friends. by far my favorite shot of the show is that five second slow zoom-in of the doctor holding donna on the tardis floor, after flying away, with the most blankly horrified expression on boths faces after what they witnessed. seeing that look on the doctors face while consoling donna was amazing.
the SUSPENSE of not knowing whether the doctor would come back for the real donna was so well done, props to the sound editors and the true length of the scene where donna is facing the far heat.
the best SCENE was UNDOUBTEDLY the conversation between the doctor and not-donna, referencing the flux and the timeless child. my DAYS was that so well done, their performances and david's face after the realization hit. it wasnt fully angry, but more sour, upset. truly hurt after the fact. im obsessed with the reference at all, because you already know im a #fluxxer (flux lover per the discord) but the emotional weight that comes with not knowing who they are is insane. something the doctor has always done is run from their past, especially after getting heavy insight about something, and a critique ive seen so many people talk about is that RTD handled it WAAAAAYYYY better than chibgoat ever did. "at least the doctor KNOWS the damage he did and isnt IGNORING it like she had before, acting like everything is ok" ok.. its not like the doctoe didnt notice it or thought everything was ok before... rewatch the timeless children and flux maybe... she was DEFLECTING though, which is a CLASSIC doctor move. chibnall very clearly stated multiple times that he left TTC arc open-ended to see what other writers do with it, and how it can be embedded in the future. to add mystery to the doctor again, which more often than not in the newer series, questions usually get IMMEDIATELY resolved within a season arc.
i truly dont believe there could have been a better pair to bring such a vital and vulnerable detail of the doctor's past, WITH RTD WRITING, other than the doctor and donna. donna was his best friend, donna was brilliant and in-universe, the one who would most likely have access to that knowledge post meta-crisis so it makes sense. the care they have for each other is so deep without being meddled with romance, and probably one of the purest forms of real connection the doctor has had with a companion on nuwho (again, not subtextually romantic).
anyways the episode is a 100/10 for me. initially i had it at a 9/10 but after rewatching it FOUR TIMES i love it so so much. im sure i have more to say but i want to get this in before its too late to make it in the video. RIP bernard cribbins, absolute legend.

This was the first time in a long time that I watched an episode of Doctor Who and was just glued to the screen in both intregue/fear over not knowing what could happen next. I genuinely believe this will be an episode people will point back to and talk about years from now like Midnight for example. This is RTD at some of his best!

I love the handling of the Flux. RTD isn't focusing on the lore, but on how a weapon which destroyed half the universe being made because of him affected him. I wonder if the Flux will become to RTD2 what the Time War was to RTD1: the big event that hangs over the Doctor's character, drives their guilt, and is used by RTD to quietly ditch a lot of the continuity from previous eras

I thought the not-beings looked fine when they were doing them with CG. The long arm prop scene looked pretty goofy though since you could very obviously see where the prop ends in the sleeves. For CGI the biggest issue was that the set lighting often did not match the background lighting at all for the green screen scenes. Sometimes it was fine, but a lot of the time the greenscreen was (as RTD himself said) very underworld.

Aside from the Newton scene, I liked pretty much everything in the Wild Blue Yonder. The Not-Things were interesting in how they don't really understand how anything works. The fact that the Not-Things need fast thinking/feeling/movement to copy anyone sort of explains why it was mostly wars that they felt from the universe. The fast conflict and high emotions of war were the main things strong enough to reach the Not-Things. They seemingly can't coppy non-living things, which is why they couldn't do anything for 3 years. Definitely reminds me of midnight.
I sort of wonder why the captain was the only being on that huge ship when the Not-Thimgs first got in. Anyways it seems like the Doctor and Donna didn't really change what would have happened to the Not-Things, unless the TARDIS knew the Not-Things would only be destroyed by the bomb if they were actively copying something when exploded.
Also I think the only reason there are 2 Not-Things to copy the Doctor and Donna, is that there were 2 people to copy, so basically 3 years ago with just the captain the Not-Things would have manifested as only 1 copy of the captain.
For a few seconds I genuinely thought Donna would die in the explosion, I was so relieved when the Doctor came back.

Wow, what a change from the last episode. I wasn’t too keen on the star beast for various reasons. The removal of the sonic screwdriver felt like a great idea given the new (maybe overpowered) features shown before, but along with the tardis disappearing and the mysterious nature of the episode, made it very suspenseful. It was weird to see such corny enemies, but let’s be honest that’s a big part of what doctor who is, and it was nice that they embraced it as opposed to mocking it. It was mysterious, suspenseful, and corny all at the same time. The way they approached the flux was great, as it felt like it had personal consequences for the doctor (which I didn’t feel at all in series 13). One of the few negatives is that the green screen looked a bit off at the beginning (where they are walking down the large corridor of the ship), a small detail which I don’t really care about. Overall, good episode that felt a lot like doctor who.

I feel a bit more negatively about this than most people I think. It just felt like Midnight but with all the interesting and scary aspects of the entity taken away. I think they should’ve gotten ever weirder with the contortiony/body horror stuff. I also found the ship super bland looking.
I did like the obvious influence of AI. Russel is clearly making a critique on AI images when they mention how the entity learns from us and it gets the image correct but the devil is in the details, like a thick wrist, or an arm too long. Them going out into the universe could be Russels concern about AI going too far in the future? I may be reading into it, but I found that to be the most interesting aspect of the entity.

It would be cool, but they gotta still be careful with how far they can ramp it up because children, sometimes very young watch too and as a family show they have to consider that into the equations, it's why we don't get lots of blood or anything like that. Personally the bland ship sorta adds to the feel, it's not some awesome ship, it's just an exploration ship that got unlucky and like something that could happen to us in the future in space.

Cool monsters, great acting, pacing was nice and great music. It is amazing what a talented editor and two actors can convey. All the feelings were hit correctly.
My two main issues is with the monsters becoming big removes the tension as it is less build up and more immediate danger and the heroic portrayal of the suicide as heroic wasn't great (should have been seen as tragic).
Bad green screen the first time IMO, ok afterwards
Didn't mind Isaac Newton although I thought it was a Italian nobleman. Cool misdirect of the setting.
Ending chat about superstition and wilf was nice although it felt somewhat deep faked which seems a bit unfortunate.
