I surf, wakeboard, kitesurf, barefoot water ski, snow ski and ride surf club racing mals. This was nothing like any of those!
I tried it on the weekend behind a jet-ski for the first time and was so close to landing on that (axe) foil pretty much everytime I fell off (helmet a must) . There was a bloke near us that had one on a SUP style board, paddling into small fat waves. This bloke apparently knew what he was doing. He paddled for a wave, and as he went to stand up the foil kicked in jacking the board up near vertical, flipping him over the top of his board. He landed head first onto the foil, nearly knocking himself out. He opened his head up pretty badly with no less than 10 stitches. Lucky we were on a jet ski (600m offshore) so we could take him in ASAP.

I felt very fortunate to get his advice - it made me focus on slowing down and be aware of not fighting the board. It has kept me safe in the learning process. Thanks for sharing the scary story - it is important for people to know it is dangerous/deadly. Helmet is a good ideas. Aloha
