I feel your pain! The prior homeowners of our house decided to use rubber mulch, lava rocks, mulch, and multiple layers of landscape fabric on top of our clay soil. It’s like a lasagna every time I dig. Slowly, but surely over the last 5 years I’ve pulled most of it out. Your progress is amazing! So excited for you!

I lived in northwest Ohio for 17 years. I was always amazed that the heavy clay soil would actually grow plants! When dry, that soil was like concrete. There are a fair number of potteries in Ohio. Great soil for that! Good luck!

if you have a three point hitch on your tractor get a post hole digger for it weuse ours to dig holes for plants and trees. If you have a big root ball you might have to dig three holes together and then use a shovel to clean out holes.

Oh the rubber mulch. I feel the pain of all gardeners who have this problem. At my home I found a thick layer of it it buried under a layer of grass and soil. They didn’t put any kind of protective material underneath it. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever get enough of it out of the ground. I’m amazed by the plants that are able to live through what is in some areas a rubber loam. I will keep digging it up.

Matthew, love the kousa dogwoods, especially the white flowering one.
They look like a waterfall of flowers, quite spectacular....so a prominent place like the corner of your front garden bed will be perfect.
One thing you could be doing to help soften your hard clay soil, is add Gypsum powder and compost.....water with a sprinkler and let the water slowly infiltrate the soil.
I've found this easier for larger trees, after a few months of rain and making holes with a pitchfork to get the Gypsum right into the holes.
I was able to plant my massive fish tail fern and it's just loving life.😊
I love your design....noticed you have a trellis in your design which is a nice feature.
Also some upward lighting to see your trees at night, would be an added bonus.
I can see everything coming to fruition over time.
Gardening is a slow but rewarding process.
You've done so well in such a short time...well done you!
From Jo in New Zealand 😊

A first year garden overwhelms in its neediness. You might consider a pickaxe for the hard ground as I was advised. Baked clay is brick if you add straw. The changes look wonderful and you are wise to plant them this fall, both evergreen and deciduous. You have a large canvas. Enjoy!

Wow! You’ve been busy and it looks great! Brown’s auction always has all things to plant! Being north of town, we like Meadowview Growers too. We put a geothermal system in 30 years ago when we built on our 5 acres. Only other choices then were fuel oil(yuck) and propane. We have a closed loop system - no need for a well. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

My favorite Yew for shade garden is spreading plum Yew -- evergreen. I also planted a golden Ginko tree this year. I bought a rare dwarf Dogwood tree online at Nature Hills in NE this year. And it came sick with brown spots on every leaf, brown edges on every leaf and the limbs were really chopped. I sent pics twice and they (Coli Hunter in sales) are still refusing a refund. So beware on online plant-buying.

Does the cardboard kill big dandelions over Winter? I don't see any weeds in your grass, what a blessing! I've had back issues and the weeds in one larger bed are taking over, mulch does nothing to help.
Please just set up a camera and let us watch the big tree planting. That would be fun to watch, even for you in a few years, to see how your sweat equity grow beautiful trees!
So fun watching the new changes!

Hi Matthew! You've really gotten a lot done since you moved in, and it's looking really good! I love the design plans you have for the front garden. It will be beautiful! Are you able to rent, or buy, a large auger that you can use for digging the holes for the larger trees? Maybe something you could use with the tractor. It would be so helpful, even for the smaller trees. Or, is there a nursery close by that could "dig" the holes for you? I now you'll find a solution. ;-) I'm looking forward to seeing the progress, and the new trees you won at auction. Thank you so much for sharing!

What a great place. Are you going to leave an opening in the new front flower bed, for a walkway out to the yard so that you don't have to walk through the bed? Also I think a sitting area would be great to have in the front also to enjoy all of that land and view.

Hi, Matthew. I'm just re-discovering your channel. It's nice to pick back up with you just as you're starting with a new property. I heard you mention in this video what you want the look and feel of your big, curving entry bed to be like as you approach the front door, but I didn't hear you say anything about what the views from your front windows will be like with what you're planning. When re-landscaping my property, I discovered I hadn't paid quite enough attention to the views from my windows and, as a result, ended up having to re-do some things years later. Just wanted you to benefit from my mistake.

If you paid you didn't win... you purchased. None-the-less, congrats on the plant haul. Nurseries here don't have end-of-season sales or auctions. They usually stuff their leftover plants in one of their commercial jobs.
Looks like you know what you're doing around a landscape design. Any formal training, or just passion and observation.
I suppose cardboard may break down faster in acid soils. I tried it back in the mid-80s. It became slightly brittle, but never fell apart. I eventually hauled it to the burn pile.
You really should video planting the big trees. People can learn from more adventurous amateur landscapers. I found I could plant some pretty big rootballs alone with a little imaginative McGuyvering, even before I had a tractor and front loader.
I admire anyone with the confidence to take on a big planting job like you are. May you be blessed with fair weather until Thanksgiving.

There is never enough cardboard, lol! When it comes to newly created, sheet mulched beds, the hardest part is definitely the waiting. I planted the trees and shrubs in one bed that I sheet mulched last fall but am holding off until next year to add the perennials. It's tough, though - I had to talk myself out of adding 'just a few' this year as I knew that I would likely end up regretting it.

Absolutely amazing progress! Truly inspiring for anyone who has fallen in love with gardening. I hope in the video with all the trees you got a Southern Magnolia. The one at your last garden was gorgeous. I actually live in Southwest Ohio myself. The only section that is a zone 5b. 🙄😂 I just recently planted a magnolia last fall. The variety I got stays a little smaller. It’s an Alta magnolia. Still is 20 ft tall, but only 9ft wide. I have it on the side of the house. I didn’t do anything to it this past winter. It came through the attic blast with no problem. We even got to -38 here. I hope you get another one for your garden. They truly are beautiful plants. 😊

Mathew it is going to be stunning. Love your design ideas. I have 2 Dogwood tree both light pink flowers. They are so beautiful. I did not know they have other colours so now I will look out for them. Looking forward to see your progress. 🎉🎉
