Dutch Eurovision act Joost Klein barred from dress rehearsal as investigation launched | ITV News

  • The Netherland's Eurovision act Joost Klein will not perform in a second dress rehearsal for the grand final while an investigation into an unspecified “incident” continues, the organisers have said.
A week of controversy and protest ended with crisis meetings and the mysterious suspension of the 26-year-old Dutch rapper who qualified at the Malmo Arena venue in Sweden on Thursday evening with his up-tempo song Europapa, a tribute to his late parents.
Israel's participation in Eurovision as the war in Gaza rages has meant politics has dominated an event which strives to be apolitical, with pro-Palestinian protests calling for a boycott of the competition.

I think they are very clear about what happened but discuss what would be the lesser evil of actions to take. I've even heard rumors that somone from the Spanish team was attacked by one of the Israely delegation as well.
IMO while I like the song Israel put up, EBU should have excluded Israel this year from the competition because of its ongoing military operation against mostly civilian people. While ESC should NOT be about politics, we have strong political influences since 2015 where Russia was heavily booed in Vienna even thouth the artist, who had a really sweet and catchy song, wasn't responsible for any of the actions. I'm neither pro Israel nor pro Palestine. Both of them did their best to lead to the escalation we had to witness in the past few month and politicians had literally decades worth of time to settle the conflict in that region but didn't care back then.

Disclaimer, I’m not in favor of Israel being included here in anyway
Cause by technicality, they didn’t declare their intentions for war with Palestine, rather they were “retaliating” in response to the October incident. It’s how ESC was able to keep Israel in the running, and under the guise of ESC being an apolitical event, could ban event goers and contestants from displaying any paraphernalia that was in support of Palestine for fear of causing outrage or even violence. They demanded Irelands contestant Bambie Thug from including an ancient Celtic writing that when translated spelt ceasefire that was included in her makeup for her number. The artist Eric Saade was able to work around and wore a keffiyeh on stage as he’s half Palestinian, but he’s been getting backlash by event organizers after his guest performance in the semifinals

Official statement is out: 'An incident occurred after last Thursday's performance. Against clear agreements, Joost was filmed when he had just gotten off stage and had to rush to the greenroom. At that moment, Joost repeatedly indicated that he did not want to be filmed. This was not heeded. This led to a threatening movement from Joost towards the camera. Joost did not touch the camera woman. This incident was reported, followed by an investigation by the EBU and police. Yesterday and today we consulted extensively with the EBU and proposed various solutions. Nevertheless, the EBU has decided to disqualify Joost Klein. AvroTros finds the measure very heavy and disproportionate. We stand for good manners, let there be no misunderstanding about that, but in our view an exclusion measure is disproportionate to this incident. We are very disappointed and upset, also for all the millions of fans who were so excited for tonight. What Joost brought to the Netherlands and Europe should not have ended this way.'

Reminds me of Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel who was accused of assault the night before his big world championship race that he was expected to win…. An Australian judge later overturned the conviction, but hey, the race was already lost and his dream was shattered. Poor Joost man... the fact that AVROTROS strongly disagrees with it says a lot about how disproportionate this is, the investigation is still ongoing and that they don't know yet what happened, because they can't really know whether he is guilty, they thought that it was best not to let him perform, sory this is completely unfair, of course 'their house, their rules', but remember every country pays a lot of money to compete, One side says “disqualification”, the other side says “that is disproportionate”. And I'm sure the only way we'll find out more is if the prosecutors decide they want to pursue a case against him, or he and the associate come out and clear things up. I'm certainly not betting that the EBU will tell us, in any case Cornald Maas (Dutch commentator, also involved in the selection of Dutch artists and a really honest guy) said that the incident was not that bad and disproportionate, work-related harassment and Harassment has been a major topic in NL after scandals involving prominent people in the media I think Cornald would never support Joost so vocally if they weren't sure the disqualified was being unfair.
