Meet the Mets Song: Rhapsody in Orange and Blue

- Many baseball teams have theme songs, but none is as clever or catchy as "Meet the Mets," composed in 1962 by Ruth Roberts and Bill Katz. The song celebrates the return of National League baseball to New York City, when the New York Mets were introduced at the Polo Grounds, after the lamentable departure of the Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers for the west coast in 1958.
The New York Mets have had a colorful history ever since, and are poised to win the National League East pennant this year. The tune is on every New Yorker's mind these days, and so I created my own piano rendition of the song. It is in a pep rally style, perhaps as Liszt or Gershwin might have played it.

My "Meet the Mets" arrangement was featured on Steve Somers' monologue on WFAN radio (24-hour sports radio station) yesterday! And was one of 9 nominees for NY Mets World Series 2015 anthems by the NY Post.

Found this today while looking for a different version of "Meet the Mets" and loved it. I posted a link on Facebook today and said, "This is what might happen if George Gershwin went to Flushing Meadow and had a run-in with a mascot with a big baseball for a head." Brava!
Sara Davis Buechner, I seldom use this word because it is SO OVERUSED these days, but today I'll make an exception and confide in you that you are absolutely AWESOME! I love it! I'm going to start sharing it with my Facebook friends.

That clock and others like it (Ebbets Field, old Yankee Stadium) are available through Dugout Memories -- fabulous baseball memorabilia website.
Also worth noting, is that the Polo Grounds scoreboard and clock were used as the template for Koushien Stadium (built 1924) in Osaka, Japan -- home of the Hanshin Tigers. So you can get a taste of the Polo Grounds in Asia.

Sara Davis Buechner deserves a lot of credit - I'd say MOST of the credit - for putting across this ear of corn. Her pianistic skills are formidable; she has the vaudeville one-step rhythm down perfectly (she's the only contemporary musician I've heard who does); her dynamics and textures add all the color the song lacks. Kudos, Ms. Buechner. I would like to hear more vernacular American music - Zez Confrey, Scott Joplin, M. L. Lake, Dana Suesse, et cetera, from you!

Looking it up on Wikipedia, there were some ironic coincidences for me. The song first appeared in 1959, the year that my dad had tickets to the 7th game of the World Series. The series went 6 games and dad got a refund for the tickets. (Dang! Would have been really cool to have those.) It fell out of use for some time until 2005 when the Sox made it back to the Series for the first time since '59 and this time they won. Only time they've won in my lifetime and first time since 1919. Good memories. BTW, loyalty aside, your rendition is much better than the Sox fight song.
@@thomasjeske4627 Dear Thomas: Thanks so much for sending the link. I've looked at a number of baseball theme songs but that was new for me. Sometimes I've thought about assembling either a book or recording of baseball themes -- a worthy if exhausting project. Elsewhere on CZcams you can find my more poetic rendition of the Brooklyn Dodgers' song "Follow the Dodgers," which has a mournful history -- abandoned, like Ebbets Field, when the team went west. I am still searching for any recordings or complete lyrics to the New York Giants "Calling All Giants Fans," but that may be lost forever. It's all Real Americana, evocative and exhilarating.

I must admit that I love the Mets but sometimes they are just clueless when it comes to branding. Take this version of "Meet the Mets" for instance. Why not ask Sara if a recording of it can be played during a middle inning or something. I mean it fits perfectly. Other examples of their lack of "getting it" is how they didn't adopt "Don't stop believing" by Journey as their 7th inning song - it fits perfectly with the motto that belongs to them and Tug gave them "Ya Gotta Believe". You know the two of the greatest sayings in baseball history came from players wearing Mets uniforms at the time of the saying - "Ya Gotta Believe" and "It ain't over till it's over". Everyone and their mother has adopted these sayings but they're Met sayings in birth and they should take full advantage of them.

Sara, My Dad is a season ticket holder and a huge Mets fan of many years. He came across your video, showed it to me and I was stunned. Brilliant arrangement. My father used to love Jane Jarvis on the organ when he was a kid but this performance is stupendously good.
