It's funny, I did this video randomly one day when I got the offer... then these guys must have sent a ton of mailers out because this vid consistently gets views. And always the same response... oh, I didn't know it was that awful
I just got this and looked at the annual fee and just laughed. Most travel cards with the annual fee give you credits that offset just the annual fee alone. The reward categories being only 1 point per $1 spent is a joke

Back in the day when this card was with Visa I remember getting this same mailer and being amazed cause it was "the black card"... I think Amex sued them at one point over this, not sure.
No, the black card doesn’t compare to the Centurion and even that is not worth it anymore. Black card doesn’t even send out the magazine anymore, it’s digital. Also they don’t send out the annual gifts. Centurion doesn’t offer any good benefits, cheaper to get the Platinum and enjoy the same benefits.
@@RJFinancial the gold card is way more luxury even. I have a gold card and I'm not even rich or have a lot of money like that but the Amex gold card offers SO many benefits. Dining credit, 4x back on Dining, rewards and credits with multiple shops, restaurants and online sites, pay over time plans, personal loans if approved, Uber credit every month, so many benefits. It's a great card to have on hand in case of an emergency or big purchase.

I actually had this card for about 3 years. First year I payed the 500 not knowing what I was getting myself into lol. Second year I called to cancel and they gave me a 500$ credit for the card renewal and the third again. When I tried to renew for the fourth they did not offer me the credit so I closed the account. But man was it a flex. I was like 19-21 years old

As a woman if this was 10 years ago when I was 19 I would've did it but now at 29 if I were to see a guy with a black card the most I'd get from that is that he is consistently hardworking or has decent credit. Nothing to wow over. If it's Amex platform then I'd drop panties especially Amex centurion. I say this as someone with an Amex gold card. Also why would you ruin your credit by getting a hard inquiry to get approved then close it later? Closes cards stay on your report.

It's not an awesome card.... instincts are correct. They likely bought a customer list somewhere and do mass send outs every so often. I don't know what the credit limits on these things are but it's not the "no limit" Amex version it tries to copy. We can get you some good card recommendations based on what you like if/when your in the market. Burn this mailer...

I got a mail offer today to get this card, and I don't see the appeal. It seems like crap compared to almost any of the cards I already own. My US Bank card is better for utilities and internet. My Chase card is better for restaurants. My Citi custom cash card is better for groceries. My Paypal credit card is better general use. I go ten years at a time without flying, so I don't care about that. It's worthless.

Ah I remember this. So funny story, I think this was a day when I didn't really know what I was gonna talk about. The flyer showed up in the mail and figured why not... I read it before hand but I didn't write an outline like I normally do, simply went from the flyer and reactions, hence the laugh/talk as I go. The best card is your debit card. You pay nothing annually and using it, you never go into debt. People paying hundreds for these stupid cards that give points are idiots. The only people who need credit cards are people who can't afford to pay cash in full for their purchases. Spend? Time to save!
Have to disagree friend. Credit cards tend to come with more protections than debit cards, they aren’t linked to a bank account so if the card is compromised your actual money is being stolen. Also there are a lot of great cards that offer rewards for no fee. As you point out, everyone should save up and have the money to pay in full. Why pay cash and get nothing when you can leverage a card and get cash back. Then pay the balance in full immediately?
@@RJFinancial OK, I can't argue with decent logic pointed out here. My remarks are meant for the 75% of the public who purchase with credit cards and then amass debt by not paying off the balances in full. If someone is that type of consumer, then using only a debit card is better for them. But for the 25% or so who can afford to pay in full and not carry debt, a credit card with no fee and rewards, such as Discover Card is the better way to go. (I have one myself)
@@23Piccolina I can get behind that. Debit card and turn off overdraft if you know you can't handle it. I try to stress not buying things you don't need and only spending what you need but you know how it goes... Unfortunately it seems to be an accepted part of American culture to do this...

I got a mail offer today to get this card, and I don't see the appeal. It seems like crap compared to almost any of the cards I already own. My US Bank card is better for utilities and internet. My Chase card is better for restaurants. My Citi custom cash card is better for groceries. My Paypal credit card is better general use. I go ten years at a time without flying, so I don't care about that. It's worthless.
They're trying to cash in on the metal design looking like the amex version. Amex wasn't able to trade mark "black card" so they can still use it. Think that's how the story goes anyways
@@RJFinancial My Blockfi and Gemini cards are metal, and I'll admit it's kinda neat. But "kinda neat" isn't a reason to get a card with an annual fee. The only reason I keep my Blockfi and Gemini cards is that they are zero annual fee.

Ah I remember this. So funny story, I think this was a day when I didn't really know what I was gonna talk about. The flyer showed up in the mail and figured why not... I read it before hand but I didn't write an outline like I normally do, simply went from the flyer and reactions, hence the laugh/talk as I go.

The best card is your debit card. You pay nothing annually and using it, you never go into debt. People paying hundreds for these stupid cards that give points are idiots. The only people who need credit cards are people who can't afford to pay cash in full for their purchases. Spend? Time to save!
Have to disagree friend. Credit cards tend to come with more protections than debit cards, they aren’t linked to a bank account so if the card is compromised your actual money is being stolen. Also there are a lot of great cards that offer rewards for no fee. As you point out, everyone should save up and have the money to pay in full. Why pay cash and get nothing when you can leverage a card and get cash back. Then pay the balance in full immediately?
@@RJFinancial OK, I can't argue with decent logic pointed out here. My remarks are meant for the 75% of the public who purchase with credit cards and then amass debt by not paying off the balances in full. If someone is that type of consumer, then using only a debit card is better for them. But for the 25% or so who can afford to pay in full and not carry debt, a credit card with no fee and rewards, such as Discover Card is the better way to go. (I have one myself)
@@23Piccolina I can get behind that. Debit card and turn off overdraft if you know you can't handle it. I try to stress not buying things you don't need and only spending what you need but you know how it goes... Unfortunately it seems to be an accepted part of American culture to do this...
