I have a theory on how the "triple goddess" archetype came to be:
in ancient societies women were mostly tasked with weaving, and I don't think it was unlikely to have three generations of women in the same room and spending their time telling stories, singing and gossiping. I think this image struck the mind of the ancients, as these stories of heroes or people they knew would be metaphorically woven by these women.

      Y. Ahriman We were always taught in my classic literature seminars it was basically just generalising women into one of three stages, which is “Maiden, Mother, Crone” - So basically in classic literature any female character falls into one of those three roles. Helpless Damsel, Supportive Mother, Evil Hag etc.

    • @Mimi-cq4bg

Nope. Original matriarchal chief Goddess had dominion over 1) Life & Death 2) Love 3) War this stretches from predynastic worship of Neith and Sekhmet to Cybele to Inanna/Ishtar to Astarte etc... Matra materia religions persisted thousands of years goddesses morphed names and location but always dominion over the same three..Even Aphrodite was War Goddess in Sparta for example.

Most poets I've seen agree they are older than even Zeus. Mostly I have seen them daughters of Nyx or daughters of Anake. Which to me makes better sense then Zeus and Themis. Nyx birthed most of the certainties of life and Anake was inevitability. The Moirai controlled the thread of mortals and immortals alike including the gods. More so each sister had a special role aside being spinner, alotter and cutter. Clotho could bring beings back to life, Lachesis chooses a person's destiny (Lachesis is the fate who visited a child within 3 days of its birth to decide its fate) and Atropos chooses the mechanism of how someone dies. These goddesses along with Nyx, Hecate and Anake are my favorite deities in all of Greek Myth.

A depiction of the Moirai that i would love to see is one where one is young child,a beautiful woman, and a ugly hag.The child representing ones beginning of their life, the woman representing ones middle of their life, and the hag representing ones end of their life.Since they are predictors of ones life i feel like this depiction would make some sense.

The one made by Paul Thumann I guess were like...Clotho is a young woman/teenager perhaps?... Lachesis as a middle age...not so old but some kind of a mother image and then Atropos that looks like the Grandmother...

There is a story that Olimpus almost fell. Even Zues and Hercules could not stop the attack. But the attackers ran when the Fates joined the fight as all knew that no one could fight Fate. It was said even Zues could not change fate once the sisters decided it.
I think the elder versions of the Fates was taken from the Norns their Nordic counterparts. As the three most mentioned Norns were often seen as middle aged or elderly. Also it doesn't help that some mistake the Fates for the Stygian Witchs, a move that Disney further calitified with their move Hercules.

Thanks for the nice video about the Moirai.
Now we know that they are not just spinners or cutters of thread of life.
Yeah, it might be better if most people think that they are daughters of Nyx and Erebus because if you think about it, who spun and cut the life of thread of those 1st generation Titans? Did they just die during the time Zeus and Themis because the Moirai were born?
Confusing but still, Greek Myths are ever fantastic. I will not ask anymore question and leave it be.... much better to leave some mysteries.😅

Just an insight: Pindar (Greek - Πίνδαρος), an ancient Greek lyric poet, added Tichi (Τύχη) which translates to Luck, as a 4th in the Moirai company. Tichi, according to him, would have the most authority of all the Moirai. Another ancient Greek poet, Aeschylus, presented the Olympian Gods as subjects to Moirai, having no control over their fates. Last but not least, Moirai, the Fates, comes from the plural form of the Greek word Μοίρα. In ancient Greek -αί is the plural ending to many words (mostly musculine and feminine). The word Μοίρα (Fate) derrives from the verb "μοιράζω", which translates to "sharing" or "splitting" in order to share or give away. I find the Fates being some of the most mysterious figures of the Greek Mythology.
Mythology & Ficiton Explained is a great channel and pretty accurate. Greetings from the corner of the world, Greece. Keep up the good work.

The Moirai can also been seen as synonymous with the Triple Goddess of paganism which is represented as maiden, mother, and crone which in turn represent the three stages of mortal existence: birth, life, and death. It is likely that Shakespeare was also inspired by this concept when he created his "weird sisters" for Macbeth.

I read the Theogony by Hesiod.
He calls the Moirai daughters of Zeus and Themis, like you said, but a few chapters earlier he calls them daughters by Nyx (Night) alone (along with a whole set of more or less dark siblings).
So either it's the same source contradicting itself, or Hesiod thought there were two sets of Moirai and failed to mention it - or this thing had several authors who cooperated to write the Theogony down or something.
    Anyway, it's funny, but also quite confusing. ^^;
Also, most other poets agree, that they are older than Zeus, either children of Ananke (Necessity), or Nyx or Khaos (Gap/Chasm).
So either they humour Zeus, because they know how long he is destined to rule and only interfere, when his position is threatened way earlier than it's due, or they just do it for the lols.

The mythological accounts regarding the parentage of the Moirai are as diverse and inconsistent as the views the ancient Greeks had on these goddesses in relation to their supreme god. When reading ancient Greek texts, it is rather common to see fate being thought to come from Zeus, though obviously poets and philosophers didn't have the same concerns and interests so their views on such things were rarely the same. Mythologically speaking, there are a handful (three or so) texts in which Zeus is subject to fate, but it is much more common to see the opposite. Fate is called Zeus' eternal eye and the Moirai are said to stand by his throne. In religious cult, which is far more important than inconsistent (and often silly) mythological tales, Zeus is called Moiragetes (leader of the fates) and he is depicted as being the only god obeyed by fate. And what of philosophy? In some schools of thought, Zeus becomes the source of everything, and his will alone governs the universe and every aspect of existence.
