A technical note regarding the color wheel at the beginning of this video (where the primary colors are red, yellow, and blue). That is a color system, just like RGB and CMYK. RGB can produce a larger range of colors than RYB, and it kind of shifts what complementary colors and tertiary colors are. Blue and yellow, for example, are complementary rather than blue and purple. Red and cyan are complements and green and magenta are complements. The system presented at the beginning is not a hard and fast color system we have to use when picking colors. We can, it works perfectly well for that, but you can use the RGB color system the same way. In fact, the RYB was a system that we came up with when we were first learning about color, and being the stubborn people we are, and because colors like cyan and magenta are harder to teach young children, outs just become entrenched in color theory.

      This 👍🏾
Also producing saturated and colorful Magentas, Purples, Roses, Pinks, and Violets was very difficult until recently. And given the fact we have the most difficulty perceiving shorter wavelengths it was hard to differentiate so we just called all Blue-Reds the same thing, Purple. It’s just kinda stuck around. I always cringe when someone tries to mix Purple with Red and Blue, I’m screaming on the inside “Use Magenta, or at least Rose 😭”, it always turns out so muddy and gross looking. Such a pretty color deserves better than that lol

Make sure when you save for web, you save your palettes in png format, else you may get jpeg artefacts which can screw up your colour accuracy. png uses lossless compression, so will preserve your palette and still make a tiny file.

I work for a tile company and I'm in charge of custom colors. Basically I work with color eye software and get a formula make it and then throw it into a kiln and heat it up between 700°-1400°F for 60mins. The challenge is you can have a perfect formula but temperatures change the color so that's where I come in and adjust it to match the color. Its extremely difficult.

I wonder what happened to cyan and magenta, because I think they were only mentioned when they talked about the CMYK system. In that system, cyan, magenta and yellow are literally the primary colors, but cyan and magenta are not even mentioned in the section when the professor talks about the feelings and emotions related to some colors, and they aren't mentioned in the rest of the video. He talks about orange and purple, wich are terciary colors on both systems, RGB and CMYK. We give more importance to those colors because culturally we think that orange and purple/violet are secondary colors, and we think that they are secondary because they are the secondary colors in the RBY (red-blue-yellow) system. All the color wheels shown in this video are using the RBY system, and none is using the CMYK system. If you look carefully, all the RBY color wheels are lacking the hues close to magenta and cyan, we just don't seem to care about these colors, and the hues next to them don't even show up on the color wheels, it's like they don't exist. People often get confused about what color is cyan, oftenly calling it "light blue", and the same with magenta, usually calling it "pink" or "purple".

But you can get red from mixing magenta and yellow. I was hoping you'd point out that the true primary colors ( even with paints, markers, etc.) are cyan, magenta, and yellow. But I suppose this is just web design 😋

The colors next to the base color on Paletton aren't analogous colors, they are tints and shades of the base hue. The video covers a lot of the basics for those new to color but the problem with a lot of color theory and application instruction is they don't typically illustrate HOW to apply this information. And sometimes the WHY described is not entirely accurate.
Having a strategy for creating a palette is very beneficial more so than making guesswork.

I think it's okay to admit that those late 90's early 2000s Apple's looked objectively bad. They were too curvy and the turquoise was a bad color decision along with the gray/white/translucent plastic. I remember hating the way those looked right when they were released, they don't just look silly in retrospect alone.

I would like to mention a technicality regarding the color mode. While it's true that CMYK is the color system used by printers, many printers, especially home printers, are designed to print from RGB. What this means is that if you send a CMYK image to one of these printers it will convert it to RGB so it can convert it back to CMYK. This means you should use RGB for many printers, and should find out from the comment printing what color mode to use rather than assuming.

    Dear Professor,
I thoroughly enjoyed your lecture. On listening to it you went through all the points on colour and advances in web design from Yahoo to Apple, then I saw the 2016 candidate pages and I'm wondering upon reflection if you feel you should have seen the impact of trump's campaign website in hindsight? As it followed all your rules. It was clean and used powerful colours. I think Goethe was right about our two visions working simultaneously.

06:13-07:36 A complicated, lengthy, uninspired, and listless way to explain the additive color system. "It´s really hard, because I don´t have a great live example for how this works... Anybody been to the Exploratorium in San Francisco before ?" Which means : "Well I couldn´t be bothered to think of an experiment. But I heard of somebody who created one. On the off chance, that one of hundred participants of this lecture had been to the Exploratorium years ago...they did it." Sometimes explanation are horrible, but I at least get the notion, that the lecturer understood the subject. Not so here. What about a little of abstract thinking ? What do "televisons, computer monitors, phones and most types of screens" have in common (as opposed to paper) ? What is the overarching principle ? A demonstration of the principle ? Impossible. If one only had a new-fangled computer screen available. Where to get them nowadays ? And a program to demonstrate this. Hint 1: use "Photoshop", Hint 2: use blend mode "Screen" to mix the colors.
