    Excellent video. I have checked out some of your other videos too and love your relaxed, informative style - none of the flashy shouting which seems to blight CZcams now. Subbed and added you to my 'recommended channels' list.

      @pondguru Před 8 lety +7

      I wasn't referring to any particular channel but some of them do get a bit loud - lots of people like that and I've been accused of being boring hundreds of times, lol.
      I much prefer to watch a relaxed channel's videos where the presenter is making the videos to genuinely get good, useful information out there as I reckon information sharing should always be the main motivation when making videos.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru Před 8 lety

      The diversification really does harm the channel as far as subscribers goes but I like it that way since there's so much which interests me. I'm sure when I release some videos there are dozens of people unsubscribe, lol
      Hoping to start filming a series of aquarium / filtration / pond videos soon and although I actually have them planned out (something I don't normally do) the available time for filming and editing just isn't there.

    That brownie ghost buce is absolutely stunning! Pretty sure buces will be as popular as anubias when prices drop and more people get to know this group of plants. There are so many species, with so many sizes, colours and shapes! And they are easy as well. Too bad many species are going extinct in the wild due to habitat loss.

    I was wondering what your thoughts were on proper kH in the planted aquarium. And if you would recommend your warmer lighting setup, the results clearly speak for themselves. And if so would most 165w black box leds be comparable to your setup? If I run the whites/r/g at near max and the blues minimally?
    Thank you and as always looking forward to your next video.

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist  Před 8 lety

      Hard to comment on the blackboxes without testing, but I would think they would work. 165watts seem a lot though ? that's drawing as much power as using T5 tubes. KH has more applications for livestock than plants; any non-zero value would do. The whole idea of needing to buffer to 3 is kinda a fad in some countries, no real benefit.

    • @sirbreakemstuff
      @sirbreakemstuff Před 7 lety

    Hi Dennis, I've been binging your videos today because I recently got about 30 African cichlids and I'm trying to create a great tank for them but unfortunately because they need quite brackish water there's not a lot of options for plants and I'm having trouble finding information and resources about brackish water plants.
    I'd love it if you have the time or if it's an idea that interests you if you could make a video about 'scaping with mostly rocks/wood/non-plants or if you might be able to make a video about plants that work in brackish water because inspiration and resources are slim. :) Love how informative your videos are and easy to understand thanks

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist  Před 7 lety

      You can try these species for Brackish water; vals, java fern, common hardy crypts... I think the the difficulty is that cichlids (depending on which exact species) can damage/uproot plants

    • @GummyBev
      @GummyBev Před 7 lety

      Hey Dennis thanks for the reply and the suggestions I'll have to check them out. :) I've been experimenting with them with plants, I bought some java and water sprite in bulk and have a couple floating in the tank to test the waters. I have electric yellows and demasonis and so far not too bad although they do like to munch them a little.
      Can I ask for a teaser on what your next video topic might be? :)

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist  Před 7 lety +1

      heh they will probably prefer fish food to munching on java fern. I probably should finish the one on DIY soil substrates, I have some other topics that I am preparing material for ; how to grow various red plants well, how to use mosses on hardscape,

    • @GummyBev
      @GummyBev Před 7 lety

      I'll have to turn notifications on, I love red plants. I've got a little bit of a red theme going with my cichlid tank at the moment, I managed to score some red coral that has surprisingly stayed red for quite some time even though it's dead. I like the colour contrast with reds. I'm looking forward to those videos, they'll be pretty helpful with my current adventures into planting and my attempts at starting to do some artistic aqua scaping for my community tank. I can't wait :)

    Amazing video!!! Thank you for sharing your knowlegde. The bml in your 120g tank has only 78 CRI but the color is still very nice and look real, how can it is possible?

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist  Před 8 lety

      Ha, I was going to talk about it in another lighting vid, but haven't gotton to it. CRI doesn't determine the vibrancy of colors in a tank; it's only good for the purpose of relativistic color comparison. So it's not a particularly important value unlike what people think. Think about it this way; if you're running an art gallery where there are 1001 shades of color which you want to show accurately you need a 100 CRI bulb; however if you're running a stage show where the main costumes color are red/blue and you want those colors to pop; you just need strong red/blue lighting.

      I would really appreciate if you make a small update video or share some photos of this "4ft Cave & ridgeline scape" tank you've shown in this video. I'm planning to do an 180x45x40 tank mostly very similar to this scape you've shown here. However, I keep getting algae.

      Thanks ~ They are baked clay chips used for growing Orchids in; crushed lava rock, Turface, would also work

    Awesome scape..thanks for sharing! Is your hardscape lace rock?

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist  Před 8 lety

      Thanks ! The rocks are seiryu, which are a type of weathered limestone.... which does increase the water's KH constantly, so maintenance itself requires quite regular water changes to keep it within usable limits

    Hi Dennis! stunning plants and hardscape. anyway,

      @2hrAquarist  Před 7 lety

      lower nitrates, stronger light and generally healthy conditions for the plants in general

      Hi Dennis Wong ( takashi amano)
      Thanks a lot for replying. U r just perfect in ur work n i realy dont have words to appreciate it. Ur kind advice will help me a lot.
      I have 6 ft x 2ft x 2ft planted aquarium n would like to make it dutch type. From last 3 yrs i have spent a lot on lights. But not getting desired result. My mote carlo carpet r not growing n also other red/ green stem plants dont grow well. I love the light spectrum n colour of BML light. But now they dont sell aquarium light. In india we dont have much options for light.
      If u guide me with some spectrum i will try to build it locally.
      Thanks in advance.

    hello.
    I loved the aquarium.
    And I'll try to recreate it, if you could tell me how many kilos of stone you use and what the name of that stone was, thank you.

      It's seiryu rock.. I'm not sure how many kilos though; probably around 30 ? or 40kg

    Hey dennis, amazing vids, nice tank, and nice content! I am going to watch your vids for sure!
    But can you please tell me som more about the tank measurements and lighting?
    I have a 100 by 30 by 40 tank but i think its too narrow for an amazing scape like this.

      It's a custom built BML LED light bar. But the company no longer sell lights for aquarium market

    hi again dennis. hey bud i want to have discus in my tank so it needs to be 82-83 degrees F. i really want to use rotala rotundifolia but cannot get a confirmation that i will grow at these temperatures. i read somewhere in one of the comments on one of your videos that your tanks run above 80 F but i cant find it again. so id like to ask will rotala rotundifolia grow well in a tank running 82-83 F? thank you man! you are helping me become a true aqua artist and im very grateful. i cant wait to show you my aquascape that ive created using your teachings. ive been doing this for 3 years and none of my scapes were as awesome as this one is going to be. hardscape is done and just waiting for lights

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist  Před 7 lety

      It will grow, but RR tends to be more leggy with longer internodes when it is in a Co2 injected tank with higher temps (80f+). The ludwigia species tend to be less sensitive to heat generally speaking. Good to hear that you're working on your new scape ~ Can email me if you have further questions as well

    I have been watching many channels about using dirt as substrate. Most of them soak the dirt first before introducing into the tank and have commented against having dirt layer thicker than 1 inch. How is your experience with both, ie soaking or not and about the thickness. I imagine in order to have higher slopes, dirt also should be thicker isnt it

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist  Před 7 lety +1

      It depends on the type of soil used... if you use soil with very high organic content (you shouldn't), for example, compost, even an inch can be too much. However if you use soils that have less organic content, that are less labile, you can very deep soil beds without problems (6inches +). Think about it, is there a limit to soil depth in nature

    Hey Dennis! Could i used crushed lava rock for filler as a substitute for your plastic risers?

  • @chickentuna2373
    @chickentuna2373 Před 6 lety

    Dennis if you’re not using organic soil as your core substrate layer, can you be more specific as to what you mean by plain dirt? (As if you’re not specific enough ha) I’ve used organic potting mix in 2 tanks with no issues really but not quite as much as you have in there. I’m just concerned about accidentally adding unwanted chemicals to my ecosystem. Thanks buddy!

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist  Před 6 lety

      plain dirt just means un-enriched soil. Typically, this is the cheapest topsoil in the garden shop. Not compost, which is too rich in organics to use deeply

    So amazing. Do you treat your soil before using it (mineralized)?

    • @2hrAquarist
      @2hrAquarist  Před 7 lety

      I recommend people to do so. But I don't myself because I select soils that have already highly degraded/low level of organics.

    • @Max-vf6xt
      @Max-vf6xt Před 7 lety
