    Amazing set!
I think the original figures are great though: I appreciate the newer figs that reflect more on actual Maori culture, but I like that the old figures are somewhat ambiguous regarding what culture they depict; one could argue LEGO excluded any ethnic markers that tied them to a certain people, which is rather respectful than not, I guess.

I love Islanders. Especially the minifigures (hail King Kahuka!).
I never bothered about political correctnes or true depictions of actual tribes/nations in Lego. I just like interesting paintings/look of minifigures 😊

Cant blame Lego for its islanders as they were never ment to represent actual cultures. That was an interpretation on your part. Like the pirates or cadtle knights, they were just goofy fantasy figures based on Western literature.

Makes sense! It’s fun to compare to modern versions of similar characters, they each have their own charm to them

@@AFOLAnonymous I agree, it's interesting to think that I doubt Lego would do that now.

The pirate captain is not Redbeard, in fact it is a whole different character named Captain Ironhook. Captain Redbeard and King Kahuka are good friends in the official Pirates lore. Other than that, great video!

Well some versions of the lore Redbeard and Kahuka are buddies. Some versions they are depicted as enemies such as in one commercial featuring Redbeard

I hope we get a remake of the set. Islanders are just so cool in the piracy era.

Lego clearly steered away from depicting any specific group with their medieval or pirate series. They are supposed to be "no name" indigenous people. They could be south americans just as well, given that the pirates were most famous around the carribean.

0:19 the rod that holds the outer edge of the sail is going through the hole from the wrong side! aaaah ... it ... it makes the sail go wrinkle and fray xD pls change that - awesome set btw

Lol you are triggered by islander minifigs design. Islander facepaint dont need to be authentic maori tatoos. Islander minifgs were only inspired by them.

Agree they don’t need them, just wanted to look at the history of them and how they have improved - don’t read too much into it, I still love the set (which I think comes across!)

well tbf you have to give lego the credit, they did get sued by the Māori people for term used in the Bionicle set at the time of the rerelease....
