TTR125 hard cold start problem FIXED !!

- Here is how to fix your hard cold start problem. Assuming your carb is clean and gas is good, this will fix the start problem. Yamaha put a tiny hole for the gas the go through to get to the choke circuit at the bottom of the bowl. The problem is that thats where all the dirt and grime goes to when the bike sits clogging this hole. So you are basically starting your bike with the choke off if the hole is clogged. That's why it will eventually start and seems to run fine after its warm. You're basically warming it up by kicking it..
Remember the goal is not to make the hole bigger, its just to clean it out and be sure its flowing freely.
Do this fix and get back to riding and enjoying your bike.

10 yrs later and your're still helping people. Worked like a charm on the first start! Thank you for saving my ttr that was in storage waiting for my son to grow.
Awesome, they're great bikes he'll love it!!
How the hell did we used to fix things without CZcams. Thank you my man
"Kicked it so much you got holes in your shoes" yes sir🤦♂️
Just applied this fix to my daughters bike. Took 15 minutes to complete. Bike started right up after 2 yrs of cleaning jets and giving up. Perfect now.
This absolutely fixed my hard cold start problem. When I bought my 2005 it had been sitting so long the gas was varnished. I cleaned the carb twice but missed the area described in this video. My bike starts cold now with the choke like it should. Thank you.
Your video saved my life… Impossible to start my daughter’s TTR… It was driving me nuts. The micro drill didn’t make it but I used a small pipe with my carb cleaner spray to blow from the small hole. It starts from the second kick. Merci beaucoup !
Awesome!
You’re a genius, following your tips I’ve fixed my Scorpa TYS 175F that has the same engine. 5 minutes, just blown the bowl with compressed air and the bike now starts immediately as I was used! Thank you for sharing! Sim - Italy
Mastro SIM Awesome glad I could help, thanks for watching!
First off...Hit that "SUBSCRIDED" button! My son has a 2003 TTR125 and always had trouble cold starting his bike! He was ready to do a carb clean or replacement then we watched your video! He did the repairs himself on the choke circuit and the bike starts right up for the first time since he has owned it! Great video and content, so easy a twelve year old can do it! Very grateful to have found your page!!!
Awesome!! Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
I can't believe how well this thing runs now. Great tip, I'm glad I found this video.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does any of you know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid lost the password. I would love any tips you can give me!
@Benton Reese instablaster ;)
@Rocky Brennan thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im trying it out atm.
Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Rocky Brennan it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my account :D
@Benton Reese Happy to help :)
I was about to drop my kids' bike off at the shop for $90 per hour. I have the drill set to do this, so thank you so much for posting!
this video helped me get my 09 ttr 230 up and running after I rebuilt the carb still didn't start after I watched this video cleaned same hole he did started right up no problems
Giancarlos Del Hoyo Awesome! Yes it's a commonly overlooked part of the carb. Thanks for watching!
Your a star Thankyou for this video I’ve had the carb off 10 times but your method sorted it never would of thought of it
I just purchased a ttr125 that had sat with gas for over 3years. Cleaned the carb out several times and couldn't get it to start until I stumbled on your video. I didn't notice the hole in the float bowl that you showed. I tried your suggestion but was unsuccessful, Until... I used a guitar string and pushed it all the way through. The drill bit technique doesn't bend thus not cleaning the hole all the way. Thanks a bunch! Bike starts immediately and idles like a champ!
Good to hear, the hole is actually shapped like an L so straight in from the top then if carb cleaner doesnt flow through clean the hole from the bottom of the bowl side with a wire or similar. Glad I got you in the right direction.
Thank you for the video. It fixed my impossible to start bike. You rock.
Thank you for taking the time to post this. I just bought this bike for my wife and as you opened with; boots tore up and battery dead.
Great video and excellent pacing... Thank you for taking the time to post. Very much appreciated.
Holy crap, years and cans of ether. My daughter's bike hasn't been run in 2 years. I clean up the carb and it wouldn't start. I saw this video, drilled that out and it fired up in 3 kicks. Again, after sitting for 2 years. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. Absolutely spot on. FWIW I used a common 1/64th bit and it worked fine.
Sweet, enjoy! Good to know the 1/64th worked fine they are easier to find.
This totally worked for my 06 ttr 230. I just found some small stranded wire laying around and took a strand of that to use for cleaning out that pick up hole and some carb cleaner. also cleaned out the gas tank well to get all the old reserve gas out. put it al back together and it fired up first thing with the choke on and then ran fine after cutting the choke off. finally no more starting fluid!! thanks again!
You are so awesome. I bought a 2012 TT-R 230 that had the same cold start problem- previous owner used starting fluid to get it started. Kept me up at night worrying how I could get it fixed. I found your video yesterday, watched it twice, followed your instructions today, and problem solved. Thanks so much.
Awesome, glad I could help. Ride on!
Perfect! I just went out to the shop and saved my sons Christmas surprise of a new to him TTR125LE. Your trick solved the problem. Thank you so much!
This guy right here. I suspected the choke circuit even before my first unsuccessful "cleanup" of the carb on a ttr 125. Stupid Yamaha just wouldn't start no matter. Damn things starts perfect now. Goes to show it's the simple things that are easy to overlook. vids like this and people like you are what make the internet great. Thanks!
Dustin B Awesome, glad I could help!
Spot on! Exactly the problem and the fix! Thank you. The bike is still cold natured but starts right up now, a short warm-up and we're off! Thanks again
Thank you random you tube dude. Just did this on wife's bike in like 20 min. We have been struggling with it starting for a year or so. Usually just kick holes in our boots till it starts. This got it starting on 2nd kick. Thank you so much!
No, thank you random CZcams watcher! Glad I could help you out, now get new boots and go riding! Thanks for watching!
This fix works like magic, you won't believe it ! I struggled for years with hard starting and a idling issue !!! I used a 1-64 drill bit to drill out the orfice that worked great, you can find that bit size at any hardware store, I also changed the pilot jet in the carb from a stock #15 to a #17. I did not change the standard main jet. FYI, there is a tiny slow idle adjustment screw on the side of the carb and a mixture screw on the " underside of the carb", ( its very hard to get to, its on the engine side of the carb. Thanks tepco1 !!!
Great, glad it worked out!
Thanks a million I had just recently bought my son a 125 it ran when I bought it but after a couple days of sitting I tried starting it and NO GO. So I found this video and did exactly what you did and 1st kick after I was done and we were in business again thank you for posting this video
Awesome glad it worked. Ride on!
Dude thank you! My TTR has been driving me crazy, 20 kicks on a good day to make it run. I ordered the exact Snap-On kit you showed (free shipping from Snap-On btw folks) and gave it a shot. The bike is sitting in an 18 degree Fahrenheit ambient and despite it being so cold it fired on only the 3rd kick!!!! I am beyond stoked.
Well...here's the verdict...you rock!! She purrs like a kitten and has NEVER started this well before. 3rd kick and she fired up like a beast and for the first time since I've owned her she didn't stall. I'm convinced the choke wasn't working at all before. Now you can actually tell you're using it lol. I don't even know how to thank you. You've had the only advice that really worked!
Thank you so much for this video. It saved me so much time looking for things. Mine wouldnt start at all cold but ran fine hot. The choke didnt seem like it did anything. I tried adjusting the cable for the choke with no luck. That's when I started searching and found your video. Followed it and cleaned out the jet with a needle and carb cleaner. Fired up first try and had a marked difference with choke on so I knew it was working. Thanks so much!
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
thanks for the video man . I didn't have the micro bits so I had to use a fishing hook. cleaned it up and put it back together and work like a charm.
Del San Nicolas Good job, never thought of using a fishing hook but why not.
I had been struggling with this issue for quite some time also. Was going through starting fluid like crazy and wearing holes in my boots kick starting. I cleaned with a small drill bit and also a very small wire with some carb cleaner. Blew it out with the air compressor, re-installed and the bike started first kick. Just wanted to say thanks for the tip. The bike is running and starting great now.
Awesome!
I found this very helpful. I found the exact kit from snap on tools for about 26 bucks and I've done the task. waiting till morning to see how effective it's been .. good luck.. I had no luck on ebay or Amazon searching for this particular brand however there are others but lots of complaints about the pen vise itself. or just expensive. this kit was a good deal for what I needed it for..took all of about 10 minutes.
Worked so good I don't even have to choke the bike to start it now.
I set the needle down and adjusted the idle air screw out and it's perfect
Thanks for making this video you saved me a bunch of $$.
Striper 22 Awesome glad I could help!
Thank you for the video. That detail about the choke circuit seems to have helped mine a lot.
Thank you so much. I've been chasing ghosts in all directions trying to troubleshoot this exact problem. Ended up using some wire to clean this out but never would have thought to check it after a full rebuild with no change in behavior.
Just a quirky little detail contributed to its not starting as easy as it must. Bravo for the hack.
Tepco,
Your video while it didn't solve my problem directly pointed me in the right direction. My issue wasn't the port itself being plugged but a dead spider in the air vent hose at the "T" on the choke side of the carb. I pulled the hoses and when I blew through the one with the 45 degree cut on it there was resistance. The spider was so petrified that I had to press a drill bit through the hole. After clearing the hose the bike now runs like new. Immediately starts when stone cold good high idle on the choke and warms up and is ready to ride in a few minutes.Like new.
I have had the problem for over a year and had taken the carb apart a few times. Thanks for getting me thinking...it was a huge help! Matt
thank you so much for making this video. I didn't know that hole even existed n have been pulling my hair out trying different things from other vids n suggestions. You're the man!
Awesome, sometimes it's the simple things. Ride on!
Thanks. Since this bike has been new, it hasn't started easily. Quickly fixed it. Thanks!
you the man!!!! I've tried everything, and finally after doing this, it fired second kick!!!!! thank you!!
Josh Foster Awesome, ride on!!
Tried this and it worked.Bike started after 2nd kick.Fantastic.Thanks
Just want to say you saved me a major headache,,I soaked my carb in Chem-Dip 24 hours even with the float bowl,Then air pressured blew it out..still same thing wouldnt start,But then I seen your idea and noticed soon as I blew carb clener in that float bowl hole it wasnt coming out down there at bottom..So sprayed it 4 ,5 times more down in there even though my long pin would go down in there it needed something more which is carb cleaner and high pressure air..Sure enough it fires on first kick now!..So just want to say Thanks for the help!
B.
Excellent video man! Thanks for the tip! My XT is driving me crazy and I think this is what's going on
Thanks for this! Had to bust out the guitar strings to clean out this port (didn't have a drill bit on hand that's this small) on my TTR230 and it solved the hard cold start issue. Your vid was the guidance I needed.
Yes a guitar string is another great tool for tiny jets and this choke hole. Glad it worked out!
ha, i use guitar strings too .................wb
@Don, #2 may be related. If the bike is leaking fuel from the overflow there is only one way it can and that's from the float not cutting the fuel off when it should. This can be caused from the float being stuck or the float valve and seat are old/dry and not sealing, or your float height is way off. If this is the case it will run rich and hard to tune. Make sure you can see light through your pilot jet, also make sure your mixture screw has the spring washer then oring or it won't seal and will suck air. GL lmk how it goes, valve adjustments are easy on those and if you can strip carbs down you can do a valve adjustment. I have 2 TTR125'S so I'm sure I'll be doing a valve adjustment vid sometime.
I very much appreciate you putting together this video. My son's 2004 TTR125 (starter bike) that he has had for about 3 months has this problem. He thinks it is broken but I informed him of this issue and have the same micro drill kit that you have so I am going to get it taken care of. Rejetted a few months back and should have done this while in there but I didn't have the micro drill kit yet! Great explanation of the issue! Bless you!
Great, you should be able yo do it the same way I did in the video on the bike. Just a few minute job. GL
Glad I found this! Seemed to have fixed my hard start issues!
My tys 125 was a pain in the ass to start. I have done the hole cleaning and now it crank easily! thanks a lot!
Giraud Joël Glad I could help!
Well after drilling the fixed jet in the bowl it would start but it made the carburation extremely rich, with the 'choke' off. It was a fail on our 2002 ttr125.
I realized that the enrichment circuit was sucking the gas up through the float bowl - through the 'closed' choke valve and into the intake of the engine. Suspect that our machine being 20 years old had some wear that was not noticed on the original repair in the video.
After a period of thought, I figured that I could drop in a small o-ring into the bottom of the choke bore, ensuring that there was no leakage. The standard spring pushes the piston closed against the o-ring.
Wow back to normal. It started in 10° F weather in 2 kicks. Had to get the idle mixture turned back out to about 1.75turns. Carburates normal throughout the range.
So with the addition of an o-ring the drill mod works great. I bet a lot of TTR125s have this problem with fuel being sucked from the closed choke.
I'm assuming you made sure it was closing all the way? Sounds like the O-ring helped but didn't fix the issue. The rubber at the bottom of the plunger probably gets dried out and leaks like you described. And if it's not closing all the way that's another issue. It shouldn't be sucking any fuel through that port with the choke/enricher off.
Many Thanks, Had the same issue with Suzuki DRZ 125, running "sweet as a nut" now! Thanks again.
Thank you for your video it was very informative. I needed info about the carb for my kids 2006 TT-125L.
Thank You, very helpful video, my TTR 125l 2003 starts perfect now.
Thanks fixed my TTR125 in no time at all. I just used a fine wire, but had to push quite hard.
I watched this used A small wire guitar string And it fixed my brothers TTr230 thank u for posting this u maid a 13 year olds weekend!! I rebulid the carb 2 times Can I guess I just never noticed this little thing clogged up
adam minor exactly why I made this video, many people miss it. Thanks for watching, glad I could help!
same as all other comments, this fixed the issue - thanks a lot for posting this video!
I used a guitar string on mine and fixed the problem of hard starting immediately. Thanks for the video!
Perfect! Guitar strings work good because they are thin and strong enough. Glad it helped, ride on!
Thank you so much! Awesome video, worked exactly as you said! She's a runner!!!
Great! Thanks for watching!
Thank you I’ll give it a try as I’ve definitely had starting issues!!!
Thank you. I think you did a great job. Too bad I did not see this before I bought a new carburetor. Thanks again! !
Son's bike was hard to get started every time he went to ride, His dad did what you said and now it starts first kick every time, Thanks
Great glad it worked out!
i bought a 06 ttr230 from an older guy and had just been starting it with starter fluid for years. it seems to have the same problem when its cold, as the one your demonstrating. im going to look at the bowl and check this out and maybe it will work. Great video thanks!!
Yep should be the same. GL.
excellent video. Easy to follow and relate to. Problems with my sons bike are 1: Hard to start as in your video, (I'll give your fix a shot this weekend) and 2: Won't idle at anytime, no matter if it's hot or cold and #3: The choke has to beld up or it'll slide back down. #4: Fuel often comes out the overflow tube, sometimes even when the bike is running. I'm planning on replacing the the choke cable to fix #3. #2 & #4 have me stumped. Carb has been cleaned numerous times and new jets installed. Adjustments have been made on the idle adjust screw and no luck. Time for you to make a video showing how to do a valve adjustment?
Very good info, thanks. I assume that these might be the issue I am having with my 125 vino, very hard to start.
Orsum tepco 1 solved my problem Thanks heaps
coming to you from Bunbury, Western Australia
Australia
thanks good video it hard to find videos that show you why.
Thank you it fixed my issue on TTR-230
Dude! Thank u! Was going crazy took the carb apart and cleaned it and changed every jet and piece was going crazy y it was taking forever to start when cold and dying when I gave it gas. But when hot it started and ran fine. Trying this tn! Hope it works
This is a really great tip. Cant wait to try it. Any suggestions as to what the jet settings are if you have a FMF powercore 4 exhaust on a 2000 TTR 125?
7 years later and this video is still great
Thanks man. I'm currently working on a Yamaha Kodiak carb video. Carb fixes never stop coming! Thanks for watching!
Wow, started on 2nd kick after I did this, this bike has never started this easily and now runs great. I've been tearing the carb apart and cleaning constantly without much luck,
Awesome, its a commonly overlooked/unknown issue. Glad I could help!
Thanks - I've just gone through my carb twice trying to fix this type of issue
Iron Ore Aerial Perfect, hope this did it! Thanks for watching!
I saw a lot of oxidation around the choke plunger and spring when I took mine apart I finally tugged it a bit and it came free .When i pulled the carb I disassemble it all the way down as far as you could soaked it and cleaned it throughly ,and Shazam it started first kick . Enjoyed the video and thanks for posting.
Great, yea put some grease on the spring and oil on the plunger. Check it periodically and repeat. Ride on!!
Of all the videos about the TTR I've watched, yours is the 1st one to explain and diagnose exactly what's happening with mine. I'll have to try your method in the AM and see if I can get her to fire up. I knew I had to do something with the carb but none of the others mentions what you mention. Is there a reason you don't use carb cleaner or sea foam to free it up? I'll have to let you know how it goes. Many thanks and wish me luck.
Great, I'm glad it worked out for you! Ride on!
Awesome...exactly what I was looking for.
@Cameron Jacobsen It is indeed a 2007 with 2012 plastic, it bolts right on.
Thanks for the pro tip. i am going to try this
thanks. worked great on my ttr230. the 125 is next
Isaac Anthony Great, thanks for watching!
Just bought a XT 225 Serow with the same symptoms. Going to give it a try, after discarding the usual suspects. Thanks
Great video. I'm going to try it on my XT225
Thanks mate. Nice video. Helped a lot. Cheers.
Oh man, I can't wait to try this
You’re the man. Worked like a charm
Heck yeah!! Thanks for watching!!
The reason I asked the below question is a 750 v twin front carburator seems to be having a similiar problem. I took it out and cleaned it up and it ran great for about a week and then it acts like it isn't getting enough fuel. The exhaust is warm on that cyl...... and will fry your fingers on the other. Compression's are great. Spark is good. It's up on the stand again now and ready for the carb to come out.......
Thanks! Worked like a charm
Working on this same carb. Thanks.
Thanks! Going to clean mine rite now, it been getting progressively worse so I'm sure that's it. My choke also froze shut once and broke the cable! Thinking of selling this thing and getting another XR80 That bike starts when you look at it. ; )
Great, yes clean that choke plunger and put some oil on it to prevent it from sticking. After you clean the choke hole like the video it will start like a charm. XR80's are good bikes working on one now a classic 1979.
Thank you! Solved my problem.
This was brilliant. Worked like a charm on my 05 TTR 125. Thanks!
I didn't see that one until I seen your video.
OK, finally found the micro drill bit, completed the work this morning ~10 minutes. Worked perfect. The bike started immediately and ran flawlessly. What would I have done before you tube??
I actually cleaned the bottom end of the Carb about a month ago and it was running great. It is my Sons and it doesn't get ridden a lot. I restored this whole Bike top to bottom. Either it got dirt in it again from sitting or I am thinking it is the starter relay which is the only thing I did not replace yet... It is only 8.00 so I got it anyway.
My other 2 Sons ride CRF 70 and these things can sit for months and kick right over.
Well I be darned... Thank You so much man !
@tepco1 thanks I'll try the things you mentioned and see if it works!
ill give er a go in the spring thanks
@Jose, I'm sure I can help. Can you be more specific? Which hose are you talking about?
thanks for sharing same carburetor on a 2005 SUZUKI DRZ125 L
Great thanks! This method works for many different carbs with this type of choke circuit.
Great video!!! Thank you!
Thx man so much and works really good now
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Sub'd and liked and shared!
Thanks worked great.
Great tip Thanks
