Tim Hardaway & Alonzo Mourning: The Pioneers of Heat Culture | Disregarded Duos by FPP

- Pat Riley is the true creator of Heat Culture as when he arrived to Miami in 1995, he wasted no time in completely turning the Heat around. But with as much influence as Riley had, he couldn't suit up and play, so he needed to acquire the right players who could translate Heat Culture onto the court. He would first trade Heat star Glen Rice to Charlotte for their star big man Alonzo Mourning prior to the 1996 NBA season, then at the trade deadline he acquired Golden State's Tim Hardaway and together, these two would turn the Miami Heat into contenders overnight. During their time together, they would each find themselves finishing top 5 in NBA MVP voting, both make First Team All-NBA and have multiple All-Star selections. But what they couldn't do is bring a championship to Miami, even though they never had less than 50 wins together and made the playoffs every year, the closest they would get would be the conference FInals where they would be defeated by Michael Jordan. And after this, they would engage in bitter postseason rivalry with the New York Knicks led by guys like Patrick Ewing, John Starks, Allan Houston, Latrell Sprewell and Larry Johnson, and the Heat would consistently lose in disappointing fashion. Then injuries caught up to Hardaway and Mourning dealt with a kidney issue, and after 5 and a half seasons, the duo was no more. They definitely underwhelmed by losing to the underdog Knicks most years, but these two are still responsible for creating Heat Culture for all the generations of players after them, and bringing the Miami Heat into NBA relevance.

9 assists per game might not sound great, but when you factor in that this team played stiffling defense and averaged in the low to mid 90's in PPG, Hardaway was assisting on like 20 percent of their baskets, and then scoring on another 30 percent. He was 50 percent of the teams offense and wasn't even the leading scorer. That's pretty impressive and Tim Hardaway is a really under rated player.
9 assists is a lot in any era lol that would be third best in the league this year
Yeah in any era that's great. It's rare in today's NBA for any player to average double digit assists unlike in the past.
9 assist in any era is all star worthy
Ahhh,in that Era 9 is elite brother. Especially when your dropping 20 as well.
9 assists in this era's pace of play is remarkable.
Forgotten players and stunted growth are my go to channels
Mines too
Mine too.
These two guys made me the Heat fan 4 life. Pat, Tim "Bug" and Zo are the fundamentals of the Heat culture.
I'm glad someone acknowledges the impact of Tim's knee and foot injuries in 99 and 00. If it wasn't for that this duo has at least 1 Finals appearance.
Zo is my role model 💪Thanks for the video.
I am a big Zo fan.. I have always liked Alonzo since his Georgetown days..and folks for get how good Walt Williams was
One of the greatest duo in NBA history that gets rarely talked about...thank you for doing this piece...Its ashamed that Zo was not selected among the 75 greatest and Rodman is ...both were 2time DPOY ..but Zo was not just a one way player like Dennis..he averaged 20+ pts a game most of his career..he also didn't get to play with all time greats like Isiah Thomas, Micheal Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Tim Duncan and David Robinson..Zo had to carry the offense and the defense on his team..in his prime years, Rodman only had to worry about defense..so whyis Rodman a 75 greatest and Zo is not...please sombody explain that to me
This is one valid ass argument u got here.
He also played with Shaq and Kobe in LA
@@gargeluy3035 Thanks...I also feel the same way towards Sean Kemp and Joe Dumars..they should have been picked over Rodman for 75 greatest..Joe D had the hardest job in the NBA ..gaurding MJ face up..and still averaged 20pts a game..Joe D was MJ 's premiere defendr.. Rodman and Salley came in on the help if MJ got pass Dumars. Gary Peyton was selected 75 greatest but Sean Kemp wasn;t ..really???...Kemp and Peyton was nearly as good if not just as good as Stockton and Malone who were both 50 greatest..how in the hell do you select Peyton and not select Kemp..that team went to the finals..Peyton definitely couldn't take them that far without Kemp...in the 90's the greatest duos were MJ & Scottie, Kemp & Peyton, Stockton & Malone, Drexler & Porter and Hardaway and Zo. Rodman is highly overrated he's a one dimensional player. Maybe top 100 but no way top 75 over these guys I mentioned. I would also put Bernard King, Tracey McGrady, Dwight Howard, Vince Carter and CWebb over Rodman...yes I said it Chris Webber..CWebb led his team to WCF and was robbed by the refs at a chance to compete for the chip. Rodman has had the benefit of playing with some of the top 25 greatest players his entire career never having to carry the scoring or playmaking load..name one player Cwebb played with in his prime (when he played with AI he was past his prime) equal to Isiah, MJ, Scottie, Robinson, and Duncan..and for a brief time with Shaq and Kobe
@@4392amtrak Yep thats right..I forgot about that..and still didn't win a chip even with them..he won chips with MJ, Zeke and Scottie but couldn't win with Duncan, Robinson, Shaq and Kobe..so why is he a 75 greatest????
@@rodcav3 Players like Dwight, English, Dantley, and Lanier should've been ranked ahead of him as well
Alonzo is 1 of my favorite players
He just needed help on those Miami teams.
Truly a shame that these two aren’t at least in the talks of great duos, such fun to look back at clips of them
My guy! I don't know if this One was for me LOL. I'm a huge Miami Heat fan and I've been asking for Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning from you and the fact that you did it both you are the real MVP! Thank you brother what an enjoyable video
Loved this era!! Miami native and we loved these guys!
Excellent video. I feel like 95% of Heat fans have no clue of this duo and era. They were the true foundation.
Yeah I was born in late 95, and it truly sucks that I never got to see Timmy and Zo perform and start this culture. Like I'm glad I grew up with Wade and Haslem, but these guys I would've loved watching them if I saw them earlier. We wouldn't have Heat Culture if it wasn't for the both of them.
@@danthefilmgent that's great you still recognize the foundation of where it started. Wade and UD took it to new heights and then the Big 3. Hopefully Jimmy and Bam continue on
@markied2873 absolutely. Unlike 90% of my generation, I actually look back and do some research. Cause I'm always interested in what came before the D Wade Era.
@@danthefilmgent great hear honestly. I love the history of the game. I did my research into watching and knowing about how great Magic/Bird was and those before my time
Man I have no idea how you churn these shits out so fast lol
Great duo...just ran into Jordan in the Playoffs
Zo is the reason I'm heat fan to this day!
I'm of the opinion, your videos are high quality and enterpayment. Solid one suggestion is to do away with the scoring cards Which kind of slows your flow? Please do Otis Thorpe and Dennis Johnson and Kiki vandewegh and Jack sickma and Dan Marleje and Joe dumas and Terry Porter. Glad to suggest more like Vern Flemind world be free or even Reggie Theus.
Appreciate the feedback! Part of the reason I started the channel was to make the kind of videos I was always wanted to see on CZcams so the season by season stats in particular are something important to me. But maybe I can figure out a way to have that info flow better in the future. Thanks for the support!
great video! since i was kid i mostly remeber this team for seeing them fight the knicks now i know more
Should have kept rice and smith, think they could have gotten Alonzo if they waited probably for a first round pick and got Tim man that would have been a great team.
I doubt they'd have more success with Rice and Smith. Rice especially wasn't good enough to be #1 on a team with title aspirations and if he wasn't the star he pouted.
@@CrazyxEnigma Yeah but you never know though,I think rice would have fell in line once he figured out he could probably be number 2 behind Alonzo and the team all played good together. They probably could have won before the d-wade era.
@@James-ki5ix Maybe, dunno if he would've considered Zo good enough to take touches from him like he did with Shaq. Kobe being #2 instead of him wasn't acceptable and there's rumors that he got into it with Jerry West and Phil Jackson when he was a Laker.
@@CrazyxEnigma Yeah fosho
Pat didn't want Glen because he wasn't good defender.
Riley and Zo were a perfect match.
Before LeBron & D-Wade, Shaq & D-Wade, Heat had Mourning & Hardaway.
Marvelous duo. Overshadowed by the product called michael jordan
The Kidney disease ended Zo's prime abruptly. I don't think even with him healthy Miami gets anywhere and they probably aren't bad enough to get Wade so while it sucks I don't think Heat fans wonder what if.
Sucks for mourning. But yea wade was better clearly. I'd put wade top 20. Alot of people wouldn't. But I'd argue between 12-25 best ever is fair for wade. How bout I pick him 16th all time
They need Zo's defense in 2007 against the Mavs ppl only talk about Wade's scoring
@@theteleisewilliamsexperienceyou meant 06
Zo is one of my favorite centers ever
I do wonder how far him and Johnson would've gone together in Charlotte had they not despised each other.
Favorite channel rn. keep grinding bro. this and stunted growth two of the dopest
Great video! Thanks for making these. 🙂
Well done video.
That was fun! I kind of forgot about them as a Miami duo but individually loved them on their first teams. Though I'll always remember Van Gundy holding onto Zo's foot for dear life, and Zo in the heat of battle still having the presence of mind not to stomp him or kick him into the stands. Shout out to gutsy Van Gundy for that moment too.
Congratulations Rhein Fire
Thank you 😊
Miami 1997 excellent team
Loved when they played the Knicks …
Yea they simply kept losing to a struggling team in the first rounds ie the Knicks. The Reggie Miller pacers would go back and forth with the Knicks even if they lost more than they won
The Knicks had their number.
@@CrazyxEnigma I could of swore I said that
@@zendariuskincaid5205 I'm agreeing with you.

Reggie Miller & Rik Smits
Vin baker & glenn Robinson
Ray allen & rashard lewis
Can you please do Chris Gatling next? 😊
very underrated duo...they should won a chip if it wasn't for the Knicks. Knicks had their number
I don't think the Heat beat any of the West finals teams from 98-00 assuming they get there.
I think in 99, they coulda beat San Antonio. They matched up well imo. 97/98, I think Utah woulda won. 00-02, they were not beating LA, let alone any of the teams from the east. Shaq was on a mission those years@@CrazyxEnigma
Could you do chris mullin????
Do Mark Aguirre
And Hardaway had a knee injury too yet he made All NBA 1st Team
why did the heat say no to Juwan Howard in 1996 was it because they were over the salary cap
I think he was actually signed, but the league voided the contract once they realized Miami had gone over the salary cap. It turned out fine for Miami, Juwan wasn't worth that much money.
Disregarded because everytime the playoffs came around they were pathetic considering the talent they had.

Issack Austin

Andrue Bynum
injuries kept this team from a championship
You want a forgotten player?
Who is the only NBA player to average over 14 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals per game for his whole career?
He is also one of only three players in NBA history to record 15 plus points, rebounds, and assists in a single playoff game. (The other two are Wilt and Kidd.)
He had FOUR 20 point and 20 rebound games in his career...despite being only 6'3".
This guy played in the 1980's and early 90's...only real basketball junkies will know who it is.
I'll get to Fat Lever eventually
@@ForgottenPlayerProfiles
Cool! :)
stat stuffer
I knew it was fat lever
Alonzo was a freaking softy. There must be a Georgetown curse for former centers, LOL!!!
This overrated squad got bailed out in 97
Knicks got robbed in that 97 playoffs series, Miami wasn't even that damn good till d-wade came in
