  • From Fonit Cetra's Documents DOC 60, Callas makes her incredible début as Cherubini's Medea. Though the sound quality is similar to that of most CD releases, i feel that here, the highs are a little more sharp and present. This performance is incredible, Callas has such a massive voice here!

    Callas at her phenomenal best! The role could have been written for her and this is my favourite performance of hers because she's still in great voice. Later performances are also wonderful but here her most exciting and often beautiful voice is intact. Fedora Barbieri is also sublime here, her gorgeous mezzo voice suits this role perfectly and her solo un pianto is a highlight.

    Oui, incroyable !!!! Le seul effort qu'elle semble obligée de faire parfois est de retenir cette voix gigantesque... les gens qui ont entendu et vu cela sont bénis des dieux... L'Apollinien ET le Dionysiaque

    This was Callas' first Medea performances. She learned the role in less than a week and she sounds like she was born singing it. The voice was gigantic at this time and there was nothing she couldn't do with it. The sound is pretty damn amazing considering the vintage, and Callas shows all of us this opera is no longer performed. I doubt whether her Medea will EVER be approached let alone surpassed. Her declamation is electrifying. She's also aided and abetted by the superb Neris of Fedora Barbieri. Will there ever be another Callas?

    • @LohengrinO
      @LohengrinO Před 8 lety +15

      +Larry Mitchell ofc there will never be another Callas that is why all of them are after all these years crazy with Malice for her (All of them!! - inside Conservatoires failed singers pretending to be Teachers teach that she was a bad singer!! - Primadonnas that not even their mother remembers their name claim they sing better than her).. Added to all this you so accurately say I will add the unbelievable performance of Vittorio Gui in the Storm Prelude!! no one has managed to approach Gui in this.. (1:41:40) This is by far my favorite Medea! Indeed her Voice is Gigantic here

    • @Zva26
      @Zva26 Před 8 lety +21

      +Lohengrin O - Callas accomplished the impossible, and is resented for it. She took an imperfect voice and turned the liabilities into assets. She shed a light on Italian opera that had long been extinguished ------ and now it's extinguished again. She still occupies her own galaxy and will remain immortal as long as opera exists. Those who don't like her have no idea of what she was even about.

      @Zva26 Před 8 lety +19

      +Dadacomero - Lohengrin is right! For the whole decade of the 1950s, Callas was an operatic singing shark. Her demonic genius has never been possessed by ANYONE! There have been some great divas, but NONE of them could do what Callas did. I doubt whether there was ever a piece of vocal music in ANY opera that presented any challenges to her. There were retired singers who resented her and they used to say negative things about her vocal production. It was pure jealousy that even continues into today. Callas resided on her own galaxy, and she still does. We will not encounter her like again.

    No comment can do justice to the miracle that was and is Callas. But Fedora Barbieri really rises to the Greek Tragedy here. I have always liked the youthful Berganza in this role but it has to be admitted that Barbieri is altogether on a grander scale and one that better fits the dramatic relationships.

    Than I want ot remeber to all who commented here, that sound's technology today makes miracles....we really nevere know what the voices sounded like in reality, seen that at a first listening of this recording it seems it's been a little bit remastered, so it's quite difficult to judge how the real voices of all was on stage.

    If you listen to this and then to her Scala Medea of December 8th, by which time she had lost a good deal of weight, you will hear how her voice had already shrunk a bit in power, volume, and amplitude. It amazes me how she learned this fiendish role in such a short time, and how she sounds like she's been singing it her whole life. There was something about this music and this character out of Greek mythology that deeply resonated with her, and the fiendish music somehow always fit her like a glove. Even in the Juilliard masterclasses, her voice sounded astoundingly better when she was demonstrating Medea's aria to a pupil. I have heard many other singers attempt this role, but they all sound ludicrous. There are so many roles in which Callas set unattainable vocal and dramatic standards, but in my opinion, none more so than Medea. This role will be forever hers.

      The definitive performance of the role

    • @Shahrdad
      @Shahrdad Před 6 lety +8

      Yes. This, Scala, and Dallas performances are each definitive in a slightly different ways. Here she is more the vengeful demigoddess, whereas in Dallas there is more of the human woman in her. She's in excellent voice in them all, and perhaps because of the Met firing, she felt even more in a Medea mood in Dallas. It's her most tortured performance of this role. Essentially, the whole performance is a titanic battle between the loving mother and the vengeful demigoddess. And there is incredible pathos in seeing the woman defeated by the vengeful goddess with horrific results.

      This and Dallas. They're both incredible in their own way: in Florence, she's more the goddess and less the woman, whereas in Dallas, she's more woman and less goddess. For me, in Dallas, she truly became Medea, as witnessed by the famous photo of her in full, grand fury.
