Pentatonic scale- fiddle Improvisation

- The pentatonic scale is a great starting point for improvisation on the fiddle. In this tutorial I briefly explain what a pentatonic scale is, and how to approach it on the violin. I then demonstrate how to improvise in jazz, blues and country. I give examples of pentatonic licks and patterns that work well on the fiddle and demonstrate how, particularly with jazz improvisation, the scale deals easily with a rapidly changing chord sequence.
I discuss the relationship between major and minor pentatonic scales, and between pentatonic and blues scales. In the context of country fiddle, the pentatonic scale, combined with open string drones, gives a full and satisfying sound, while the 'fiddle capo" method allows the rustic fiddle sound to easily come out even in the most difficult keys.

Thank you thank you!!!! I was just wondering what the next step after being able to play the one octave pentatonic scale - aha!! ALL the notes available in 1st position - hilarious how tricky it can be - once I get better at that, I'll be back for the next step and this video will be rewatched several times, I'm sure!
Hi Judy, glad you found this useful!
I am THRILLED to have discovered your lessons! You break it down and explain each step. I have always wanted to learn some licks by Stuff Smith, but couldn't find anyone to help me. And THERE YOU ARE! Thank you so, so much for all your videos!
Great to hear that, thank you!
Thank You for lesson. Chris has a real passion and knowledge that he likes to share with others. I willingly refer to films and his books. It was he who planted the seeds of hope and dreams of a beautiful violin playing. Best Regards
Thanks Michal!
Excellent video Chris. Informative and well demonstrated. Thank you.
Thank you for being an excellent teacher! I hope to meet you one day. Thank you for showing the basic notes through showing music and how to play them with your own interpretation. I personally struggle with music theory and you have shown a true shortcut to different learning styles. Please keep showing the music from my perspective is really helpful.
Thanks Ross, I'm glad I'm doing something useful!
@@TheFiddleChannel Chris You are very usefull. I agree with Ross. Education in your films are honest hopefull, 😉'I hope to meet you one day !'
Thank Ross, glad to hear you're finding my videos useful.
Thanks Chris. Just joined your patreon, hoping to make more headway. Thanks for all your free stuff you share with all of us out here - amazing content.
Thanks Tonia!
Excellent. I am a retired guitarist, and not really interested in playing violin nor fiddle, but if I were, you’d certainly be the go to guy.
Clear, concise and always a touch of humor.
Well done,
John Paiva
Thanks John!
Sensacional! Este método utilizando as escalas pentatônicas como ponto de partida para a Improvisação me auxiliaram muito a lidar com a tensões no violão/guitarra.
Próximo passo aplicar isto no violino, viva o blues viva o jazz.
It’s funny, I just started messing with this sound the other day and now you have an awesome lesson to make it even better for me!!!!! As usual Chris, great work!!
Thanks Corey, glad you found this useful.
So talented
This really helped demistify a lot for me. Thank you!
Glad to hear it!
great lesson
Thanks Bill!
Great video Chris. I follow you from Brazil. Which your book do you recommends for the begginer? I've been finish the first Suzuki book. Thanks.
Hi Thiago. You might consider my book Beginning Jazz Violin. The first chapter covers all the basics of violin playing and reading music, before going on to easy exercises and pieces in jazz style.
Do you have a lesson in improvision using the chord notes within each chord change to build the improvised solo.
I thank you for all you do for fiddling .
Mike
Hi Poppy. I have referred to this idea in some of my jazz videos, but haven't done one specifically on this. Did you have a particular song in mind?
@@TheFiddleChannel How about something simple like Red Wing in G major ,it has one or two accidental chords . It could be used as a template by fiddlers for other tunes.
Thanks again and especially for this answer.
Truman
@@poppyk1431 Hi Truman. I did Redwing as part of the Western Swing part 3 video. though to be honest I can't remember what I did in that one. However, I'm considering a new video on that tune, and if so I will use your suggested approach.
@@TheFiddleChannel Thanks again ! Truman
I learned playing violin in a very amateur manner from youtube videos. I can play the easy songs and unable understand your videos completely. What do you suggest and also thanks for this wonderful channel.
Glad you're enjoying my videos. It might help to learn to read music. Take it slow and steady!
@@TheFiddleChannel Thank you Sir. I am able to read but maybe should be more patient. Good day. Wish you the best.
Chris, can you use the pentatonic scale over the major for improvisation? Ie can you play G pentatonic improv on g major melody being played? I’m presuming you can …
Definitely!
😃
Do you give online lessons? I would be interested
