    For me the most impressive thing about Terry Matalas in this interview is how little credit he gives himself and how much credit he gives to those he worked with, naming them specifically. That's real leadership and likely one of the reasons he's so successful.

  • @leanders2k
    @leanders2k Před rokem +37

    I like how Matalas gives credit to individual team members (i.e. writer Cindy Apell for Ro Karen) for realizing S3. Also his frank talks about the pressure and all the corporate levels of bureaucracy for approvals. What an incredibly difficult job he had!

The way the season unfolded was nothing short of a masterpiece. 🚀
    And Dan, massive congratulations on getting Terry on your CZcams channel! 🎉 It's incredible to have the creative genius behind Star Trek: Picard join you for a discussion. Your hard work and passion for the franchise are evident in your content, and having Terry on the show is the cherry on top. One of the biggest changes this time around is the shift in attitude of the production team. They have a knowledge of the source material, clearly respect what came before, and are actually engaging with the fanbase again, which hasn’t happened for the live action productions since before the Abrams films (the teams behind the animated shows have been the same way, Lower Decks had the first writers/producers who seemed like they actually wanted to be there instead of it being just another gig.) They’re going on the CZcams channels, being extremely open about their motivations and thought process, accepting criticism when it comes up, and never come across as having contempt for the audience. The previous Picard and Disco teams aren’t like that, they showed an utter disdain for the fanbase, and were quick to resort to insults of (insert ist/phobe/bigot here) at any reaction short of unqualified praise. Hopefully the franchise studio handlers, or at least whoever sets PR policy, take a lesson from this as a perfect example of how to interact with the audience in a healthy way. The various interviews on CZcams in the lead up to the show felt like something of a “good will tour” trying to win back some of the fanbase, and it’s nice to see that they’re continuing with it now that the series is over.

    And what was great was they stuck the ending which so many other shows have failed to do.
    Literally had tears how good it was.
    What was also great was it had deep stakes and I felt the full range of emotions, without them having to kill off any characters to achieve. I must admit I feared Picard was going to die. I was very pleased he got the good ending.

The passion is clear and I'm sorry to see he still has the self doubt due to some fan reaction. What's mind blowing is that he was writing and shooting this whilst the disaster that was season 2 wasn't even out. To have the foresight to know that a course correction was needed is prophetic.

      Trek, especially TNG era trek, is at its core about humanities evolution and betterment. It has a strong moral compass… and the best trek always took moral and ethical issues and examined them from all sides.

    The Enterprise D was a wonderful surprise. I was convinced that they would steal an Enterprise from episode 3 or 4 since the homage to the original crew (Search for Spock) was very much in the air. I just thought it was going to be the E or F, particularly since they kept mentioning that F was in spacedock for decommissioning. Wonder if that was an intentional fakeout? If so, bravo. Great conversation Dan, and a redemption for a show I had given up on. I binged s3 over 2 nights literally because I wanted to watch this video, but those last episodes especially were very special. The carpet joke resonated with me in a real way, too. I've long maintained that TNG has a cozy feel even in its darkest episodes and having that back for even a moment was so good. Hoping Legacy leans into that approach, where spending time with the cast is a heartwarming experience, carpet or no.

  • @the7percentsolution

    Isn't it so heartwarming to be excited over Star Trek again? And boy does that say a whole lot about pretty much everything else released since 2017. I know those shows have their fans to varying degrees but NONE of those shows have had the reaction that Picard Season 3 has gotten. I certainly agree that Legacy should have been green lit by now. I'm positive it's just a matter of time. There's no way the studio ignores the overwhelming success of this season.

  • @Quotenwagnerianer
    @Quotenwagnerianer Před rokem

    It's kind of wild that they shot this back to back with Season 2 even before Season 2 had dropped. That means the season is not really a reaction to the fans reaction to the abysmally bad 2nd Season. Because at that time they did not have had the feedback to it.
    So they actually steered away from the abyss all on their own.
    That actually gives me hope. Because it means that creative teams can correct their decisions largely on their own, when they see their own product and don't need fans to tell them that their first attempts sucked ass.

  • @stewsretroreviews

    Terrific interview! I loved this season of Picard. Give us Star Trek Legacy now!

    Love this video, hope you are doing a full review / breakdown soon. I wonder if you brought up in private the “Does it make sense, I don’t know” you quoted so much from Season 2. Loved Season 3 and felt the same way you did Dan.

      My season 2 review was one of the first things we talked about prior to the interview. Terry had seen it and he’s a pro. Neither of us felt the need to defend our previous work, and there was no expectation to from either of us. We were just very excited to talk about this season.

      @@DanMurrellMovies Yeah, I didn’t think he’d be mad or anything or you’d bash him on it. I was just curious. I think right now is a great time to celebrate Picard Season 3 bringing Trek back in the limelight in a way I hadn’t seen since TNG was on it’s final season. This is great and hoping for Legacy.
