The actress Ruyi is really good. Her reaction when she saw the emperor was so spot on. You can feel her disappointment in him
Ruyi went through a lot in the cold palace and she is finding out that the emperor only cares about himself and not her
The actress is amazing. When she was told to trust him, her eyes were utterly empty. She no longer has any faith in him.
Typical male. He saw the frostbite but not her emotional pain and despair...
Ironically, the frostbite scene is symbolic.
He says that he sees it, because it's a visible symbol of what she went through in the Cold Palace. When he applied the medicine himself and Ruyi said "this isn't something you should do" it's because that is a task for a servant; at most for a physician, if the matter was very grave. So he said "but I want to" because he wanted to lower himself to the level of a servant as an apology.
It's true that he is short-sighted in that apology but at this stage he isn't at his worst yet. It would have been better if he'd told her about the plan but he thought it was too risky.
So basically he's bad but he's still trying; he hasn't gotten to his super awful stage yet
Zhou Xun (Ruyi) is so beautiful. She's absolutely luminous, her voice is so pleasant to listen to and her acting skills are peerless.
I really don't know how Ruyi could even stand the Emperor's touch. He's a empty shell of a man without remorse where feelings are concerned. He doesn't know a thing about love, respect, or compassion. I truly think he's one of the worst emperors ever depicted in a drama. She deserved so much better than what she got. Her disappointment in him was palpable.
I don't really understand why Ruyi loved him so much? All he did was cause her sorrow, hurt and mostly didn't trust her.
I don't get it either.
They were childhood sweethearts. Ruyi hoped he would love her the same, but the emperor's lack of trust in others & refusal to accept responsibility for his actions led him to wrongly accuse her of so many things. This drove her love for him away.

It doesn't work like that. Once you're inside the palace there'll be no ways out. If his love for her has gone then he'll just won't care about her anymore but he won't let her go. He might jailed her or jailed her in her own palace. There's nothing called divorce in this place because once you're his's, you'll always be his's. If he let her out of the palace that's even worse. Because that's when she lost her standing and everyone will despise her even her own clan
She has duties of helping her clan especially after her aunt has been dethroned and the clan’s power has greatly weakened. Also if she go home to her clan that’s a big disgrace to her and her clan. She won’t be able to remarry and everyone will know that she’s lost her purity (virginity). (That’s pretty serious for women back then because their duty is to marry and give birth to carry the family line.)
That could never happen. This is no such thing as divorce back those days. Women just die in palace.
michxshao in the past, only the husband can divorce his wife and not the other way around. However, in the palace theres no such thing as divorce because once you become the emperor’s concubine/consort, you belong to him so you can only stay and die in the palace.

Ah the more I watch of these the more I’m so very sad for her, she is so kind and sweet and then to be treated like she has/will be is heartbreaking

@@vanisanthiran5850 Agree,but maybe...just maybe his ego and unhinged paranoid attitude towards Ruyi could be a little more controllable since he would have no emperor ego specifically attached to him. Being an emperor really messes Hongli big time

@Vani Santhiran Having consorts and concubines was the norm for royalty and nobility. You have more than one wife so that you have lots of children. You have the main wife, your legitimate wife, and a bunch of consorts and concubines that have a single job: having kids.

Many people don't seem to put the emperor in the right context. He was raised to implement rules, follow many of them himself within a strict protocol. Having to deal with people who all wanted something of him. His concubines, he has to try to keep them all at ease so they don't fight and give birth to as many heirs as possible. Even being the ruler, his mother and others constant want to spy on him, gain influence and fool him. To show true love to Ruyi, isn't always easy for him cause he mistrusts nearly everyone and cannot slways show that he favors her, more than others in a special way. He researching and taking action to prepare this gift for her, isn't superficial to him. For him it's showing his care for her.
I have no idea what this story is but the music is sooooo on point!!

She needs to stay alive and come out from the cold palace and eventually she came out. She maintained good relations with others.
