Thank you very much for this movie!
Taken in context for the time it was made, this is a fantastic film. Great clarity, unlike so many others. Love seeing Walter Brennan and John Wayne, who would go on to be in several movies together. Hard to believe Brennan was either 37 or 38 when this was made (born July 25th, 1894). He is the only actor to win 3 Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor.

As a fellow who raised & broke horses down in S. Texas, those hats served a purpose. The wide brim gave much needed shade, while the tall crowns allowed a "cooling tower" much like the Mexican, "sugar-loaf" sombrero.

The first draft of the Three Mesquiteers and Timothy Fitzgerald McCoy (my mom's favorite cowboy of the talkies) was the real deal - cowboy, great rider, dead shot, cavalryman in WWI, expert on Indian lore, and, as he grew as an actor, incredible screen presence.

Tim McCoy served in the Army Calvary. He knew all about horses and was quoted on several occasions saying that it's not true that horses are smart. "They're basically dumb animals," said McCoy. John Wayne went on to star in ten or so westerns produced by Lone Star before he made the leap to Republic Pictures. Wayne's Lone Star movies are my favorite.

In classic westerns I like how they speed things up when there's a horse or a stagecoach chase or a fistfight. When I was a kid back in the 1950s it all just seemed right.
As far as horses being smart or not, I can say that they're smarter than me... Growing up, if I was riding a horse and there was a tree within 50 acres that horse would head straight for the tree and scrape me off onto the branches.
I lived in Prescott Arizona when I was thirty-five. I owns three horses. My wife left me for the horse shoer. I guess it wasn't the horse's fault. But it's safe to say I'm not real fond of horses today so what doesn't bother me to report that all of the horses in that movie are dead now :0

John Wayne (born 1907) was just 25 years old and seven years away from the 1939 film that made him a star - 'Stagecoach'.
Tim McCoy - born 1891 - was among the western stars of the 30s and 40s including Buck Jones, Tom Mix, Tex Ritter, Tom Tyler and others.
(From Wikpedia:) (His) father was an Irish Union Civil War veteran. While attending St. Ignatius College (now Loyola University) McCoy saw a Wild West show that influenced him to purchase a one-way ticket west. He ended up in Lander, Wyoming where he worked as a ranch hand. While there, he became an expert horseman and roper while developing an extensive knowledge of the customs and languages of the local American Indian tribes. McCoy was a renowned expert in Indian sign language and was named "High Eagle" by the Arapaho tribe of the Wind River reservation. He competed in numerous rodeos and then enlisted in the United States Army when America entered World War I.
    Military career
McCoy enlisted as a soldier in the United States Army and served in the cavalry during World War I (although he did not serve in combat nor overseas). He served again in World War II in Europe, rising to the rank of colonel with the Army Air Corps and Army Air Forces. He also served as adjutant general of Wyoming between the wars with the brevet rank of brigadier general. At 28, he was one of the youngest brigadier generals in the history of the U.S. Army.

IN 1932 THERE WAS MAIL DELIVERY ??.

    • @grizzlycountry1030

Mailboxes became a necessity in 1863, when citizens began enjoying Free City Delivery. Letter carriers hand-delivered people’s mails directly to their doorstep without any charge. Although the residential mailbox was already useful then, it wasn’t until 1923 when it became mandatory for each household to have a mailbox or at least a letter slot. This ensured that people received their letters and letter carriers performed their jobs.

Why did they always wear their hats even indoors? They were as big as umbrellas!!! These old films are so bad that they are funny!

Considering what we endure nowdays I get your comment, but I can't agree with it. It was just different way, WAY back then.

@@Flowerchild778 to be honest, I thought about my comment after the fact, and what you just said went through my mind. Because I am such a massive western fan, and it was a totally different time back then, you're probably right
