"Patrick, I got a role for you! It's a scifi film with Matilda May. She's nude 90% of the time and you even got a kissing scene in it."
Little did Patrick Stewart know....
Lol best joke in this section
Heh, I remember when Jay Leno had Patrick Stewart on and he revealed that they had a clip of his first on-screen kiss. He was mortified. :P
No one knew who Mathilda may was back then, this was her first MAJOR role.
@@Mahmood42978 She was a famous dancer in France, appearing often in theatre.
Where did Patrick Stewart spend his youth? In theatre in Britain and France...
He got Railbacked....
Hmm, still a more dignified movie moment for Sir Patrick than "The Emoji Movie"...
LaDracul or his country album! 😅
@@sliverhandsonbasses not to forget the deconstruction of his best character by himself with Star Trek Picard. But that is a series and not a movie, talking about a movie, Lifeforce is a great movie, wired but great :-D
Imagine not watching movie cause Patrick Stewart was in it
@@billyhaigh9274 More like the movie was terrible and why'd he agree to it...
@@scheinerchen6471 Picard was fine, stop whining
Tom: "She's destroyed worlds!"
Branden: "Well yeah, but the make-up sex is *amazing!*
This movie was a childhood favorite of mine. My right hand fondly remembers Mathilda lol.
Alright then
Ewww
Just to explain the Matilda May made of blood scene...she was being held captive in Patrick Stewart's body by the high doses of drugs they gave him. She removes the blood from Patrick Stewart and mixes it with the blood of Sir Percy, diluting the drug enough for her to then escape.
Makes sense
Do what?
I can only assume this was explained in the book?
@@snatchadams69 Assuming it was in the book
How is this movie not more well regarded? The visuals, cinematography, camera work and special effects are amazing (for their time); the story is pretty interesting and the performances are pretty good. Having Matilda May spending most of the movie nude doesn't hurt either.
Railsback's acting is pretty over the top (which sort of fits), the leading lady being nude the whole time makes it hard to take seriously (until Game of Thrones got folks to accept that), and frankly the plot is a bit over the place.
I dunno if this has already been said (haven't read all the comments), but the ending is actually fairly straightforward and unambiguous. The space vampires win. The initial three that were retrieved by the Churchill were advance horsemen of sorts, charged with paving the way for the harvesting of souls by starting the zombie chain-reaction. And while one was destroyed, the other two succeeded. The proof is at the end, where May and Railsback are transported to the ship, which is then fully re-energized. You can clearly see this, as the ship seems to come alive after hosing up the lifeforce of a substantial number of Londoneers. The 2nd male sacrifices himself and Railsback is reincarnated into a "true" vampire. After the vampires on the ship are replenished, it moves on to another planet to victimize, hence the "she's destroyed worlds" line.
This film is high art masquerading as a batshit crazy Dracula flick with a sci-fi bent. There are numerous top-notch European actors (including Capt. Picard), the effects are out-fucking-standing (the model work alone was insane), Mancini's score is epic, and the story is both bonkers and absolutely terrifying. Canon's crime was committing to the bit 1000% and blowing the minds of a completely unprepared audience, which is why it failed at the box office. This film should've easily grossed $60-70mil against its $25mil budget, but in 1985, everyone was instead seeing Back to the Future, Rocky IV, and The Jewel of the Nile. Who wants to see a depressing horror flick where space vampires take a soul vacuum cleaner to an entire population center AND GET AWAY WITH IT?
May God have mercy on Canon's soul.
Fred Leggett I’m actually having story ideas of a sequel that takes place 40 years after this movies events. Now that you mentioned the little details, now I wanna figure out how the second movie should begin and how it should pick up
They should have thought about putting it out in October during "Scary Movie" season, or something.
@@ShadowSonic2 Yeah, it probably would've played better in October than June, which is often used for rom-coms and luvvy-duvvy films. I wish Fathom Events would do a limited run when theatres reopen, as it would look fantastic on a big screen, particularly John Dykstra's amazing effects. It would HAVE to be the uncut British version, though.
@@fredleggett923 June 1985 was a VERY competitive month for blockbusters, it gave us Back to the Future, the Goonies, Pale Rider, St Elmo's Fire and Cocoon alone.
Really, up against the names of Spielberg, Eastwood and the others it's no surprise. The Hacked up US cut didn't help.
And let's face it, having a mostly British cast wouldn't have appealed to Americans either. Of course Railsback not being a bigger "Name" hurt a little too when competing with those other stars.
This was better off an October release.
@@ShadowSonic2 Unfortunately, opening in the almost legendary cinematic month/year of June 1985 was, ultimately, a bad idea, but might've been beyond Canon's control given the elastic and uncertain nature of film releases in general. Also, since Canon had spent so much money on Lifeforce (I think it was the most expensive movie in the company's history), they were probably keen on getting it into theatres as quickly as possible to recoup production and marketing costs without thinking first when it would play better. Choosing to drastically edit down the film for American audiences probably didn't help, either.
It really is a tragedy, as it doesn't look like anything of particularly wide interest was released in October of 1985, apart from Commando and perhaps Jagged Edge. Demons, Re-Animator, Silver Bullet, and Elm Street 2 got it right, though.
That bit where she forms herself out of blood feels like something out of Parasite Eve.
Thank you for reminding me there is a Japanese Parasite Eve movie. I NEED to track that down someday.
R.I.P Tobe Hooper 8-26-17, you will never be forgotten, thank You for your awesome movies.
Mathilda May was also 19 when she made this movie. Her costar 20 years her senior. What that poor girl had to go through.
David.Bowe is the Goblin King now.and forever.
This is very much underrated film! There should have been also a sequel of this.
And darn Matilda May just transformed into a sexy medusa vampire made of blood...That special effect is totally Epic!
I read the book in my early teens and rushed to see this in the theater. Loved every naked minute.
I love the apocalyptic turn this movie takes
How ironic is it that one of Brandon's best reviews is a movie that's actually great and that he really enjoyed?
Soooooooo relieved this isn't the end.
Anybody else feel a little hollow and empty when the credits roll because you wanted to go off into the cosmos with Mathilda May as well?
The effects in this movie were insanely good for their time, especially considering this was a Cannon picture.
Also how amazing is it that this movie actually made Brandon speechless for once?
I saw this in 1985 in the theatre and I loved it. Then about 17 years ago I saw the original version that I missed out on in 1985.Always watch it at least once a year. I couldn't possibly imagine my sci fi life without it. Another film I saw thanks to Fangoria.
Dude, with all those lights floating through the city during the end, I had one thought on my mind. And then Brandon goes and plays the song "I believe it's magic". Which is exactly what I was thinking.
And thing is, it was just one big ball of light. It was actually the Male vampire traveling around absorbing energy from the zombies.
I still don't understand how this channel doesn't have more subscribers. I would love tp see Brandon pop up on RLM for Best of the Worst
10:37 Holy crap, a ghost just fiddled his collection on the left side!
You son of a bitch you really had me going there.
I got sad their for a second
I know, right??
Same, I got sad and when I read the comments I watched the full ending I was like oh ok you're not ending cause I love his videos.
TheWarBird01 I literally stared at the monitor, wtf?!
Thankfully, Brandon was screwing with us.
With the number of film reviewers on YT, he's one of my top three that I watch every time a new video comes out. I'm still trying to find a copy of Infra-Man to watch, I hope he does more Japanese tokusatsu hero films.
Me too, I was about to freak
You've convinced me to do two things:
-Watch Lifeforce
-Listen to Landing Station
This movie was like twenty plus years ahead of its time. This also has to be favorite review from Brandon.
I hadn’t realized, till he started delivering his lines at 1:25, he also played the truancy officer in Clockwork Orange. The look on his face and the inflection of the words in his lines really resembled his truancy officer character.
Fun fact: Patrick Stewart is not the only Star Trek castmate Railsback co-starred with. He appeared in an episode of the 80s Twilight Zone with Brent Spiner (Data) and John DeLancie (Q).
Lifeforce is so goddamn badass...
And the movie Daywalkers has a similar plot point with the spread of vampirism.
so dose batman vs dracula
i still don't see how this is a terrible film after two-parts. it looks like a great feature, with amazing effects, a good cast and a story i really admire.
congrats on 100 review Brandon!! you're an inspiration to aspiring critics everywhere. here's to 100 more wacky, crazy and overlooked films
The movie was good even with the problems, it's just that it's critics were fucking stupid.
It is not bad
It is just misunderstood
It's a perfect genre film. Critics hate genre films, as do most audiences, thus it flopped.
it's honestly mostly the acting and mostly the lead actor. Im sure he's a great guy but he's wooden and unreal as hell
I agree, a great film with good effects and acting. How did the film do over seas? Usually they do much better.
I think I remember watching this movie as a kid, it's slowly coming back to my mind...
Not funny Brandon. I yelled "WTF!? NO!" at my computer screen. You do a great Job Brandon! Please, please never quit. Congrats on #100! oh. And I've always loved Lifeforce.
Rest in peace, Mr. Tobe Hooper.
I watched my taped-off-tv version of this movie a lot as a kid.
Sometimes I ever paid attention to the plot.
You're right. It's not half bad. Underrated even.
I saw this movie in theatres .. alone .. no one would go with me! not even my horror movie obsessed younger brother (who insisted we see Ice Pirates). I LOVED it! To this day, I don't understand why this doesn't have a cult following! It is so entertaining! it's a risk by a studio that wanted a blockbuster but let it take it's time (for the most part, this movie could have been much longer!) and find its own way!
This is amazing, thank you for this.
happy 100th!
"Please! I don't want to make out with Patrick Stewart! No!"
XD! I laughed so hard at this part!
Lifeforce is in my top 10 favorite horrible underrated and awesome films of all-time. It was one of the first DVDs I bought 20 years ago too. I always wished there had been a sequel!
I remember seeing this as a kid somehow and the first zombie guy that drains the doctor during his autopsy scared the absolute shit out of me. Scarred me for many years. XD
I think the space vampire chick just pulled a T2... With blood.
"Tell me"
"NO!"
*slap*
For some reason I laughed and rewatched the scene a few times. As did some of the cameos. I'd love to see more of them especially some Linkara as I'm sure he could provide some Godzilla comics for the inevitably upcoming episodes.
"The Ghostbusters should have thought of Matilda May" ROGLMAO
Part of me's glad I watched this after 7 Golden Vampires, but part of me's a little bit sad I missed the chance to get trolled by that ending. Well played, sir.
This video reminded me that I watched this movie when I was a kid... for me it was incredible, I've never seen anything like that before. I don't remember all the details, but I'm pretty sure there were a lot of censorship in this movie (mainly the nude scenes), but even though, the concept and ideas were amazing. Now that I know the name of it, I'll watch it again and enjoy the fond memories of the perfect vampire girl.
🎶Whoa-oh here she comes🎶
🎶 watch out boy she'll.... 😕 drain your life force?
Would love to see a review of some of the British 'Carry On' movie franchise films like Carry On Camping, Carry On Cleo and Carry On Up the Jungle. Also, the Up Pompeii movie starring Frankie Howard😀. Congratulations on reaching 100 shows.
5:32 Funny enough, that was kind of the original plot behind Bram Stoker's Dracula (the book, not the film). Dracula's whole scheme was to infect the (at the time) greatest nation in the world and spread the vampire curse across the globe. However he didn't get much further than Lucy and half-turning Mina before he was discovered and forced to retreat back to Transylvania...remind me again why he's the most feared vampire of them all? :/
7:17 Didn't "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" do something similar?
9:25 Maybe Kane is gay. ^^
17:01 Amen To That, Brother!! ^^
4:45 the moment Ian Mckellen will never forgive Patrick Stewart for
I saw this movie twice when I was a kid. Once on my own, and once with a friend. When I saw it with the friend, I realized how good the movie was. We were both silent watching it, which we usually weren't at any other time.
Excellent review. Lifeforce is still a good flick even today......
One thing I was constantly noticing was how similar this was to the Quatermass movies. A good example of this is the similarities between Lifeforce and Five Million Miles to Earth (1967).
There has been quite a frequent comparison between the Quatermass films and LIFEFORCE. Like LIFEFORCE, QUATERMASS AND THE PIT (1967, the US distribution title being FIVE MILLION YEARS TO EARTH), was exploring (as the show ANCIENT ALIENS would later, but with a less smug attitude), the possibility that aliens from afar visited earth in the past and that their encounters inspired the monsters and demons that became part of our inherent myths and folklore. And like LIFEFORCE, QUATERMASS AND THE PIT also ends like LIFEFORCE with a disaster-movie type climax. Also, both movies failed at the box office. LIFEFORCE may not exactly be QUATERMASS AND THE PIT, but it does share some interesting themes and concepts that would be emulated or ripped off later.
That being the case, LIFEFORCE also borrows themes and plot structures from the first two Hammer film adaptations of Nigel Kneale's QUATERMASS serials for the BBC, brilliantly if rather unevenly. Like the astronaut of THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT (1955, aka THE CREEPING UNKNOWN), who becomes a host/catspaw for the invading alien organism after it destroys his crew and hides in the surviving astronaut returning to Earth before beginning its invasion, so Carlsen is possessed by the Space Girl to bring her and her fellow vamps to Earth after his entire crew has been drained. And like QUATERMASS II (1957, aka ENEMY FROM SPACE), a full scale alien invasion on Earth begins that is unnoticed at first until it reaches gigantic, and almost unstoppable, proportions, with humans being possessed/transformed by the invisible menace; in LIFEFORCE, this time its humans being drained and turned into zombies that need to act as vessels for the aliens' life-collecting mission. Also, both the first two QUATERMASS films had an American actor, Brian Donlevy, play the main character, just like American actor Steve Railsback does in LIFEFORCE. And like most of Hammer's productions, LIFEFORCE has a unique, Gothic atmosphere that is hard to find in other productions.
Whew!
Lifeforce was a great movie
Lifeforce is a movie that has something for everyone - it's brilliant! :)
I agree, Lifeforce is far from a terrible movie. Peter Firth's performance kept me immersed the entire time.
Sweet zombie jesus you scared me there for a second
Tobe Hooper's homage to the british *Hammer Horror*, movies, - superb.
~ watched this one at the cinema when it first came out ~.
Specifically “Quatermass and the Pit”.
Along with, *blood from the mummy's tomb* and all their mildly titillating vamp movies...
So to review we have determined most films are suffering a sever lack of Matilda May. But is Lifeforce a sufficient amount of Matilda May, or does it just seem that way to to other moves lack?
I don't care what anyone says -- Matilda May in Lifeforce is the most beautiful woman in the history of the world.
Totally agreed here.
No Caroline Munro, in a Brandon video? Take it back! :D
Amen brother.
I certainly don't disagree with you Bert, I'm sure most would not. It's kind of a hilariously obvious statement Matilda May is beautiful without the defiant intro. You could almost add a few more overwhelmingly popular ideas like saying "I don't care what anyone says - chocolate is delicious, giant robots are cool, I wish I could fly and death sucks!"
Seen her recently? She still is!
Damn It Brandon!!!! Ya gave me a friggin heart attack with that ending of yours!!!!
it is nice seeing talent outside of linkara and Doug on channel awesome.
R.I.P Tobe Hooper.May your legacy live on, box office failures and all.
wich is why vampire movies often add things like, "require 3 days." or sharing of blood and such.
I was a 7-year old kid when I watched this from the betamax of my grandpa with his 21" Sony tv and I got awed with the experience...especially when Matilda is shown.
The scenes in London reminded me of “Quartermass & the Pit”, a great 60’s British Sci-Fi
Sorry, Quatermass
I agree the movie is not terrible, it's fantastic, well made and well directed, the reception in the UK is better.
I was going to say, "I just subscribed at the last episode" the idea that this was the last episode would have been very typical for my life.
it really sad to watch the space vampire die
SCARED THE FUCK OUTTA ME AT THE END!
Mathilda May should have won an Oscar for those fun bags.
You might want to check out "The Tit and the Moon," a film which is basically a love letter to her boobs.
Already seen it, thanks though.
That was one lucky kid!
Best Unsupported Actress?
Two, she should have one two Oscars.
Best special effects?
Sure as hell had a special effect on me when I first saw this at the age of 15!
Yep. David Bowie definitely looks like a space vampire. I had an idea ages ago that in the Reviewaverse, he was a Drakulon all along.
Brandon, dude, have you ever heard of pulgasari? it's a North Korean kaiju movie... I think you might dig it. the behind the scenes involve international kidnapping and North Korean escape.
Yes, that'd be a good choice for a review.
many congrats on your 100th brandon! keep these cinematic "gems" coming!
This is an epic deep-dive. Hopefully, you're review will make more people give this unsung classic a chance. Great stuff!
Damn, I can see why Front Line Assembly used so many samples from this movie, it's fucking awesome!
Congratulations on your 100th review, here's to a hundred more!
I like how this movie puts a sci-fi spin on various supernatural horror tropes, including demonic possession and exorcism even, not to mention the very concept of Lilith.
Lilith, who I think the main antagonist is supposed to be, is the first vampire according to an apocryphal Jewish text and the one who all vampires (lilim) answer to. The concept of an "alpha vampire" comes from the Kabbalah of all places, with some of Lilith's biological descendants having vampiric legions of their own.
R.I.P. Tobe Hooper.
18:24 this part reminds me of the kid in creep show trying to get the witch to let him read one more story before cooking him.
You have NO idea of how relieved I am that you're still ongoing! Great vid, may you make a hundred more!
The reason we don't have exponential growth with vampires is because vampires a) can choose whether to kill or turn their victims, and b) are intelligent enough to realize that too many vampires around will outstrip their food supply.
Good review. I saw Lifeforce when it was first released and it disturbed me a bit. Maybe it was the utter chaos that was unleashed at the end, but repeated viewings have made it something of a favorite... ahhh, Mathilda May...
More people need to see this film because Hollywood is not going to be creative, as this film, today.
"IT'LL BE MUCH LESS TERRIFYING IF YOU JUST COME TO ME."
That so needs to be on tshirts.
This has always been in a cult classic film amongst my family.
Great reviews mate 👌🏼
Your couch deserves an episode all of its own. Brandon interviewing a couch, both sitting on completely different couches. With a furniture store sponsoring the show.
This movie could've easily been a huge Doctor Who story-arch. Hey, Linkara!
Steve Railsback made out with both Mathilda May AND sir Patrick Stewart in the same movie? Damn
I thought Lifeforce was good when I first saw it.
Basically Quatermass and The Pit, but with sexy alien vampires.
Speaking of Bowie, you should review Labyrinth.
4k
The feeling when you realize that the Henry Mancini awesome musical score is used in the first Baldur's Gate game as battle music in some battles...I was wondering why the theme sounded like battle music from a game...
12:20 Still no Rick Flair jokes?
Should've had him go WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Patrick Stewart is pretty much playing Professor X from "Logan" here.
Six Ghostbusters references? You spoil us Brandon!
a long with his Ghost busters reference... "Bustin makes me feel good! Bustin! Bustin! Bustin! Bustin! Bustin makes me feel good!" fits perfectly with this movie.
I LOVE LIFEFORCE. I have since it came out so many years ago.
You did read my tweet ☺️ Can't wait for Planet of the Dinosaurs
Psyche! Glad you're not stopping now, Brandon. I really want to see you review "Planet of the Dinosaurs". It's one of my guilty pleasures.
Also, the climax of "Lifeforce" had a blue laser going up into space, like many of today's blockbusters. Was this movie ahead of its time?
Anyway, congrats on making this far. The future is uncertain, but I will always look forward to watching new videos from you. Happy 100th!
They see the PM getting kissed by a vampire and are just "Oh well. Let's get outta here."
It's the PM himself whose the vampire, kissing the human woman. That's why, and they noticed how the other Military folks there were also sick meaning they were all contaminated. That's why two zombies attacked them on the way out
The US release cut a lot of scenes (including the awesome opening theme)
The international version has more scenes.
Lol, Josh Hadley's voice at the beginning. 😁 I know I have watched too much Radiodrome if I can identify his voice right away.
"She just got Railsbacked!"😂😂💀
I laughed so goddamn hard when you said that I scared the living shit out of my sleeping German Shepherd, Shadow! And yes, it's true that Patrick Stewart is an immortal! He keeps his youthful looks by draining the life force from his co-stars... Just look at the whole cast now from Star Trek TNG😁😆
Hey! I recognise that nurse at the asylum: Hi Sally Brogan from Space Precinct!!!
Ah... I was just racking my brains trying to name her. Thanks 😊
never really heard of Lifeforce before now, seems pretty solid though
I agree, why was this a flop? It looks like a solid movie to me with a good plot and excellent effects as one would expect from the people involved.
Baaaaaaasically, its a flop because of the company associated with its production, Cannon has a history of this same kinda problem. Brandon mentioned they made "B Movies with A Movie Budgets" and thats really the gist of it. Some B Movies are great fun and fantastic. Some are just.. not great. Its difficult to market a movie like this thats so balls-to-the-walls crazy with its plot to the point where you can list it fairly under like 5 different film genres. If you want a more in-depth explanation, watch Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films.
if i rember correctley the movie actually has 2 scores i cant rember why something about a legal fight or the director or studio hated on of the scores but ive seen youtube videos howing scenes with mancinis score versus the other score , crap now im curious i have to go find out why again
Well, watch the film and you'll see it's definitely one of the best ones to come out of the '80s instead of having your mind made up for you by some critic. Yes, it definitely has a B-movie vibe which is exactly what makes it good. I mean, if "It! the Terror from Beyond Space" had modern FX and dialogue, it would actually be way better than "Alien" in terms of actual entertainment value.
The movie had two scores because of the US cut - although some of Henry Mancini's music and credit were kept for the Tristar-distributed cut, Michael Kamen was called in to score additional music. Both scores are available, but while Kamen's music is interesting, it doesn't hold its own compared to Mancini's. Oddly enough, Hooper originally considered the also-sadly late James Horner to score LIFEFORCE, but due to Horner's commitments on other projects, he settled for Mancini instead, which proved to be a wise choice, although it makes me wonder if Horner's music would have matched Mancini's. In any case, the additional music by Kamen was, like the US cut, interesting but not exactly what was intended by Hooper and not as memorable.
