  • I stay in Savoy Hotel in Blackpool owned by a company that's just been voted for the ninth consecutive year bottom of the pile in the annual survey by consumer group Which?
It's received some very bad reviews on Tripadvisor over the last 12 months, BUT is it as bad as some people say? Let's find out!

It's criminal that Britannia Hotels have acquired so many amazing and historic buildings only to run them into the ground by selling the rooms dirt cheap and letting them go to ruin. If a proper hotel chain or even independents bought half of them and were prepared to invest in renovation work they could be incredible places to stay.

I always say don’t be fooled by hotels with names like Royal, Palace or king & Queen in the title, most hotels spend a fortune on up keeping the lobby but once you enter the elevator it’s like going back in time to 1987 and the room looks like somewhere you’d stay if you were on the run from the law or contemplating suicide.

I helped out as a beauty therapist about 6 years ago there; it was awful. We were in what I think was a ballroom and the entrance and the rooms we used reeked of stale urine and it gave off 'nursing home' vibes. Everything was dirty, dusty and even getting clean water for our treatments was difficult - we had to get jugs of water and empty them into buckets.

It was obviously a splendid hotel in its day - such gorgeous glasswork - and a great pity that it appears to be slowly deteriorating with the wrong people in charge. Perhaps Wetherspoons ought to take it on, they do at least save old buildings. By the way Tim, that isn't black filler in the bath, it is simply what is underneath when the enamel is damaged, I remember from my youth! Great review.

Attempted to stay here a fee years back. The first room we were allocated was next to a room housing the extraction units for the kitchen. This caused the wall behind the bed to constantly vibrate and hum. Was given a 2nd room, however that one had a bag of syringes and needles under the mattress! The only compensation for that was a free bottle of wine with dinner or to leave and find somewhere else.

  • @Thats_him_with_the_daft_hat

I thought it was going to be worst. I am relieved and disappointed, at the same time.
I love the period design, decor and the character. They're a relic of a bygone age. Nowadays, these buildings are somewhat redundant as hotels.
I am disappointed by the lack of real investment in these national gems.
Britannia have the most cynical business model in the industry.

The problem with a lot of these large, grand old hotels is they cater for a market that no longer exists (in the quantity they need anyway). Im surprised Brittania keep buying them. I imagine a lot of the other chains wouldn’t touch them. They’re a no win proposition. Spend millions to refurb them to their former gory and have to charge rates that won’t bring in enough people. Cut your room rate and cut back on maintenance (which is likely to be astronomical) and you end up with a reputation like this. Let’s be honest, most people don’t care how grand a hotel is anymore as long as it’s clean and comfortable - and for the same room rate, would you choose this or a non-descript premier inn?

Exactly. British seaside has been in decline for so long with the advent of foreign holidays, I would be amazed if they can make enough money to renovate these lovely buildings. Old films show the huge numbers of people who used to visit these resorts, compared to today. Having said that I see Haven charging £2500 per week for a caravan in Great Yarmouth and people are paying it...

I stayed there in 2017. it was awful and continues to be a running joke between my mum and I! It was grim, and has had a bit of a facelift since our stay looking at this video. I was sad to see the carpeted walls of the lift have gone!! the carpet in the restaurant was sticky, and the food looked so grim I had cereal for breakfast only. the beds were just the same as yours, painful backs ensued. they were also itchy as heck, felt like things were crawling on you during the night. our wardrobe couldn't be opened without a tonne of force, and the bathroom was grim. as for haunted, our kettle would randomly turn on in the night, so we unplugged it....and it did it again. make of that what you will! what's hilarious is we stayed there, and attended a convention at the Norbreck...so the best of the awful hotels in one trip!

We have just come back from the Rock and Roll weekend I mentioned 5 months ago. I saw the window with the gap at the top, but no complaints about anything. The food was fine, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was clean. The hotel was fully booked but there was no problem with only the one lift, never saw a queue. The rooms on the 4th floor I heard were small and should be avoided as the lift only goes to the 3rd, but that's hardly the fault of the current owners. Separately, the event was well organised too with an excellent programme of bands and other music and dance classes

You should take a Dyson V6 cordless (not a sponsor) or similar and put it in your suitcase. When you get there whip it out and vacuum the floor to see how bad it is!
Like I've said before on your other videos, if they would just spend a few quid on each room like buying a new mattress every 2-3 years and giving them a lick of paint once in a while, they would make for a much better experience.

I'm in my early 40's and found it to be ok. Yes I saw the window frame in your video and the missing celling tile. But the room was clean, the double bed was firm, not springy at all. Yeah I was impressed with it. I think you were right to ignore the reviews. I think people make these up sometimes.

Some of your holiday camp accommodation has looked worse. Not stayed in Blackpool for years, last time was the 80's with parents and the whole hotel came down with something not good, probably the illest I'd been.

I've worked in the Britannia hotel in Brighton and it is awful, screws coming lose in the bed, hair both on bed and in bath, cracks in the bath as well so it often leaked down to the room below, curtains and windows dirty, leaks happened several times a week. They cleaned the mugs by just taking a cloth and wiping it out, you had to pay extra for WiFi, we had a smoking floor(they got around the law by saying the room is your own when you rent it or something) and we had over 20 rooms in the basement with no windows so if you booked a single room you most likely ended up there, at least on the weekends. And because it's a great location they still charged you crazy prices on the weekends.
It was also bad for the staff, we were paid really poorly but had to deal with so much and didn't have breaks, you only had 15 min to gulp down the food quickly, if you were on your own you had to stop to help guests in-between. Because the pipes were so old, the water tasted awful so you had to always put so much ice in it to be able to drink it. It was just awful.
It think you just got lucky with the room you got

I was one of those that suggested you look at this one Tim. My reason was the Trip Adviser reviews and the state of the place at the side overlooking Gynn Square. I stay in the Moorings Hotel in Seafield Road and I walk past the Savoy every time I head for the tram stop. It looks in a right state, Having said that the public areas look very nice, I was very surprised. I seem to recall one time hearing it had the longest bar in Blackpool. Open to correction on that one though. Think I will stick with my hotel regardless :-) Many thanks.

I think the relevant thing is how much does the room cost. Some people seem to expect tip-top cleanliness and decoration, good food and characterful surroundings for less than £50.00 a night for a single room, in a town or city with all nearby facilities. This is just not realistic. If you could get all that for £50.00 a night how could any hotel survive charging more.

I think a lot of people visit the hotels like this and Royal Bath in Bournemouth out of nostalgia. However saying that they are fantastic architecture from the victorian era that just need a lot of investment and TLC. If the owners modernise to get younger customers the buildings loose their appeal & the Savoy in Blackpool is in Blackpool. Under the current financial status people don't want to go there.
I personally have stayed in a lot worse. Once I just stood by the window in my room a kept an eye on the Mrs sleeping it was so bad. She laid on the bed but I couldn't. When we left (early the next day) we found rat traps under the bed. It was in Finsbury Park London. If I can find the name out from the Mrs ill send it to you and Dare you to spend the night there.
