Tissot recently released their new PRX digital watch collection, targeting a younger audience with a retro style. The collection includes 35mm and 40mm sizes and features a digital display powered by the DGT-2040 Swiss quartz movement. Compared to Casio's A168WG, the PRX offers a more minimalist design with better case and bracelet quality. It's seen as an upgrade for young watch enthusiasts, offering a more sophisticated option. However, it comes at a higher price, with steel variants at $375 and gold-tone at $450. While the PRX digital may appeal to a niche market, Casio's territory seems safe for now. For budget-conscious buyers, there are more affordable alternatives, making the PRX more of a collector's piece than a casual wear option. Speaking of affordable, the powermatic 80 models still remains strong as an alternative even though it’s pricier than the quartz models

I ordered mine yesterday here in Australia. I have more than a dozen Casio’s in various guises. I bought the quartz PRX last year in 35mm. Yes I was also a bit bothered by the extra real estate with the 40mm, so I ordered the 35mm.👍🏼🤤😎

I think they are quite nice, as a Powermatic 80 owner. Casio's are cheap, but look cheap, this is a step up for people that want it.
I agree. It’s why I stuck with my gshocks as these casio squares tend to look cheap.
I got my digital PRX last december. And it has become my daily watch ever since. Finally a decent stainless steel digital watch with a sapphire crystal and bracelet with solid links that is not a chunky G-Shock.
Casio for me, I like the G-Shock square, solar charging, atomic clock, and features innumerable. Its not a glam watch, so if you want the flash, you can pay for the fancy bracelet and sapphire crystal for 10x the price. If you want a premium mechanical Swiss watch save up for a an Omega or Rolex. My G-Shock lights when my wrist turns in the dark - no fidget required.

A Casio if it was made with premium materials, better lume, and minimalist, elevated design… then yes. That said I love Casio and this watch.
These watches aren't bad. For me they feel like a "wath it would be if we made it back then and reissued it now". It was probably too outlandish for the average mechanical enthusiast and too unheard-of for the Casio fan - which misses a true premium vintage-styled digital watch that could actually be this Tissot!
Honestly, if they made it less expensive i would 10/10 pick one.

They've come for the Casio A-171.
Tissot did this before (1977 Tissot 03) and it was actually a Casio S-11. Literally. Casio did a deal and Tissot simply engraved there logo etc on it. Price was a lot more obviously. I'm wondering if they've done it again? 😮 Vid about 1977 watch here:

I’d choose the PRX over A16 because I like the shape more and I dislike all the writing and the button descriptions on A16. Never been a fan of metal bracelets so I’d end up changing it

Many thanks for the great review. I decided immediately to purchase the 40 mm gold one . Very beautiful and unlike Casio ,it is with Sephire crystal, which added to the price . I do have the blue Prx powermatic 80 and was considering purchasing the Quarz one . But ,now I decided to have the digital gold one .

I have the Tissot prx digital watch. Wanted the gshock but I’m allergic to the band. I like the tissot.

Tissot really hit this one out of the park. The retro style of the PRX is elegant and its simplicity is charming. The price is a little steep, but it’s a fantastic design.
That price was the deal breaker for me. Luckily I’ll review this when it hits our store.

I like Tissot and I have a number of digital watches in my collection. I don't like this one though. I would much rather they redid one of their actual vintage designs as opposed to this faux throwback

Design: its a vintage design, please google "vintage digital watches" and for sure some are shocking for us as we are used to Casio style digital watch. Im no expert but i found the Phasar 1000 strickingly similar. Besides the minimalistic and vintage may appeal to a lot of people into watches, so its a matter of personal taste
Quality: I cant understand why you compared it with a Casio. I love Casio (as most of us). But comparing this PRX digital to the simple Casio is like comparing the PRX Analog Quartz with another basic analog Casio. Its on another league. The overall finishing, the case, the bracelet are incredible for a 375 dollar watch. You wont get that quality on any other brand AFAIK.
Price: Its exactly the same as the PRX quartz analog. So they simply changed a swiss analog quartz mvmt for a swiss digital quartz movement. What are people complaining about? If you didnt complain for the quartz analog price, then why complaining for the digital one?.
Finally, i do agree with a comment on the video that someone said "fashion watch". Quality wise its definitely not a fashion watch for sure, but the way its marketed in those video ads kind of make it look as one.

Have you ever heard of the Casio A1000 line of watches? Ever tried to see how their bracelets feel? They have excellent quality bracelets like most other expensive watches but you’re comparing an expensive watch with a rasin cheap gold Casio. Why not compare it with the A1000 line which is still much cheaper but at least the quality is comparable. What a review.
Yes I have the a1000 and had it modded too. The bracelet still does not compared to the sharp and tight tolerances of the PRX.

Still cheaper. (I have the gold one myself.) But also no sapphire, less quality bracelet, and a waterproof rating of only 30 meters. (I switches the gold mesh bracelet it came on for a brown leather one. That made it look much more classy.)
I bought the 35mm silver dial PRX digital a few days ago and its arriving today. Its just so weird, I had to like it. I wanted a high quality digital watch, I always liked the PRX and its like that movie The Fly where instead of an annoying scientist and a common house fly they merged the two and got a freak of nature that kept people up at night for years. And if you're talking value, iirc you have to pay a lot to get a full metal GShock, like a square or CasiOak so it seems fair.
And this has sapphire crystal, which a metal G-Shock doesn't. I assume the digits are bigger too.
A full metal G is has more value in a single bracelet link than this complete Tissot.
What were they thinking?

-200 m water resistant: no
-screw down DLC caseback: no.
-day/date visible in time mode: no
-current time visible in stopwatch and timer mode: no

Just a lazy conversion, using a shitty simple Quartz module with no intrinsic qualities.
@@e28forever30 Do G-shock bracelet links have solar? :-D I think you're being a little harsh. The Swiss have never done solar, bluetooth, or radio. It's a dressy watch, not a diver. But the big draw card is the numbers are way bigger. I can't believe it's 2023 and Casio are still putting out the square with those tiny numbers. No wonder the GBX-100 has some popularity, but I can't figure out why Casio doesn't bring bigger numbers to the whole line.

Honestly, why do you associate these fine technologies with diver’s watches?
The Japanese incorporate these fine technologies across their entire range, from dress watches to tool watches.
There is absolutely no excuse to exclude these nice technologies other than laziness.
Why?
Because a lot of people still get aroused when they see “Swiss made” on a dial , without even considering anything else, never understood why.
Blind faith in an industry that is far from innovative.

series is running for 40 years now in 2023, a great achievement and still very successful.
Furthermore, there needs to be some unused space around that dial, because of that little magic called “ToughSolar”.

For me, the dealbreaker is the lack of date on the main screen.
I like this digital PRX, it has a stainless steel case and not a chromed plastic case as Casio. It also has a sapphire crystal, thus scratch resistant.

If Casio A171 was made premium materials,better lume, an elevated minimalist design, and charged more to reflect the More sophisticated positioning of a Casio digital watch then yes it’s a copy.

It’s obvious Tissot wanted to bring an elevated digital watch to the market, some thing Most Swiss manufacturers don’t really offer these days, and to do it with premium finish under it’s most popular lineup. People are hating on it like they are forced to buy it against their will or something.

Fashion Digital watch might be the future, but I'm not in a rush to jump in. Seeing Tissot pushing their luck on PRX line up is something that concerned me. It starting to lose it's exclusivity. But thankyou I love my PRX Powermatic 80.

Did I Buy The Quartz PRX?
Too expensive, and the display numbers are weird. Maybe do something interesting on the negative space like a sunburst. It is not a bad idea I just think it was not properly executed. Also four buttons are better than three.
PRX all the way. Remember when Hamilton released their digital watch in the 70's it was marketed as a luxury watch. Casios are okay but luxury they are not.
Luxury they are not indeed. But I think the kids buying these Casios are not really looking for luxury but more on fashion. But once they grow out of it, the PRX is the next step
To me, luxury is more than skin deep.
A basic digital module without even a day/date, no Solar charging, and no radio control is far from luxury for me.
I’ll take my full metal square any day of the week over this.
Superior module, superior functionality, superior water and shock resistance, that’s luxury to me.
It’s fine, but the price is way off. You can grab a Baltic with change left over.

If the dial had any of the patterns from actual 70s digital Tissots, I would have already bought one. With a monochromatic dial it looks too plain.

As I would only consider the 40mm, I agree with you, the gold is the best choice as the color adds some visual interest. I find the silver and black faces too bland, at least in photos. Yeah, the lack of info on home screen, having to push a button are all bummers. Yet as a digital fan and having digitals on wrist 90% of the time, I applaud this and hope it sells tons making other brands jump into the market. I love my resin watches for their comfort, however I also appreciate a stainless steel watch and these will always have their place. Summing up, had I the opportunity I’d get one just to show their is a market for non-Casio stainless steel digital watches!

As both a Casio and Tissot fan and collector I do not like this watch. Way too much dead space and poor branding for a digital watch, it looks unfinished. Tissot tried to milk their succes with the PRX but its a swing and a miss for me

I think Tissot missed the target on this one. This one looks like an afterthought to me.....simply slapping a digital module and face onto a dial meant for an analog watch. This to me is the very definition of milking a franchise. To me Tissot didn't bother to design a proper digital watch dial.....just took the quick and easy way out. To me this is a disappointment. At least at $375 its cheap to buy. But for me its a no.

@@racing7782 expensive compared to the options and target audience. You could see that tissot priced this at a lower price than the quartz analog. Knowing them, the movement likely cost a lot less than the analog caliber.
For us that’s already collectors and watch guys, it’s very affordable for its looks. Most of that value is coming from the case and bracelet.

@@DesignAtelier a strong circular design should have a module that looks like it was designed for a circle. A plain rectangular module should be in a rectangular watch.

I find this to be terrible value and terrible design. Wonky proportions and the horrible integration of those buttons cheapens the entirety of the PRX case and bracelet. Thank God and the oddity of luck there's people who like this, otherwise Tissot would have an assembly line to dismantle ASAP. Digital is cool and all, but there's little better than solar powered analog Casio watches with Zaratsu polishing and atomic timekeeping for $400 or less. These Tissot fanboys are paying a lung and a half for a Swiss F91W in steel, how original.
Also, there's nothing Genta about the PRX line at all. The original Seastar the PRX is based on was a knockoff of the Rolex Oysterquartz.
I’m happy it’s not much of a hit unlike the previous PRX. Yup casio is still king of digital watches.
