    Hi Ned. My wife and I have a home in Gensan and we had the same issue. We have a large concrete driveway right beside the house and it heats up incredibly. Your idea will work. Last year my brother in law installed netting and it does help reduce the heat. The plants will thank you as well. Whatever you decide, good luck. Enjoy your channel.

    I suggest you use a container garden with very narrow path for car and motorcycle. Lots of banana trees, bamboo, mango trees and cacao trees. Create an artificial jungle canopy. Everybody wants to see your mahogany trees growing in large containers. Containers on wheels?

    Pressure wash the concrete and paint the concrete white. The white paint will prevent the concrete from absorbing the heat. It will reflect the sun yes but the concrete will not heat up. Pull curtains on the windows during the day again white curtains. Black absorbs heat. This works I do have experience.

    Double layer the shade cloth. Better yet, if you can rig it so that there’s space between the layers, it’ll do the trick. That from my 15 years in Saudi teaching combat survival to military pilots, using their parachutes for shelter. Yes even in the summers with temps as high as 135 F. The sand would get as hot as 180. F. 2 layers of parachute shade made it survivable, not comfortable.

    G'day Ned. For the unshaded concrete - Get a high pressure water cleaner and clean all that grey/black mould growing on the concrete.That means it won't get as hot as it is now. If the concrete doesn't get as hot you won't have a heatsink sitting outside that side of the house. I remember you said you were going to clean all that grey/black mould on the walls when you first moved into the Orange House - Here is another job for high pressure water cleaner.
    Then if you're feeling ambitious paint the concrete white - This will cause it to reflect the sunlight so the concrete doesn't heat up as much.
    Something else you could try is hang some shade cloth from the eaves just under the gutter across that side of the house and paint it white.

    • @martinagnew7508
      @martinagnew7508 Před 2 lety +1

      Ned, cleaning the concrete should be an annual task if you don't paint it but if you paint the concrete you might find it gets slippery, so may be the paint is not a good idea but the shade clothe should work as an add on to cleaning the concrete.

    If you can't shade the cement the next best thing is to have it reflect the sun better. I see many dark spots that could be pressure washed, and something to whiten the cement would go a long way. White skim coat or paint job would reflect most of the heat, but not sure how durable it would be if you did not spend premium money for premium materials. If the water is available for a reasonable cost you could wet it and rely on evaporation to keep it cool

  • @dhall4924
    @dhall4924 Před 2 lety +3

    In Thailand, they often run water sprinklers on top of the awnings. The sprinklers spray water, which evaporates and cools things quickly. i don’t know how much water costs in the Philippines, but you will be surprised how quickly it works, good luck.

    LAYERS!!! If the sun netting is so cheap, hang it in layers, one on top of the other in the areas you want the most UV/heat protection. Remembering to keep an inch or three between the layers so the breeze can dissipate the heat better from the top to bottom layer, just like a dual paned window, but with air flow.

      I stand corrected. White concrete is right but who has one. White marbles are cool but $$$. Plywoods might work. Just water the cement on hot days and scrub it clean with long handle, is cheapest.

    Ned i know you may not believe it but. The concrete is black with mildew and dirt. so washing it with a pressure washer and bleach would not only look better but would attract less and hold less heat. and would smell better and look better also.

    I'd use the type of tarp you have up now would give great shade on that side....have maybe someone stitch 3 or 4 of them together to make one huge tarp. Also maybe some bigger plants against that wall might block some of the heat also.

    If you want to block out the sun but still have some sunlight come thru. There is window screen material that does that. You can block out 50% or 75% or more. It comes in 36" wide or 48" wide material. Length varies but I assume you can get 25' rolls. You can also use for your windows that face the sun. Check with someone who does screen replacement and they can tell you what is available.
