This song is about the seasons of life. When you're born, up into your early teens, you are in the Spring of your life. From your late teens to your early 30's you are in your summer. Mid 30's to your late 50's you are in the autumn. 60's on you are in you winter. "Woke last night to the sound of thunder. How far off I sat and wondered." He realizes that he is old now and his days are numbered, just wondering how many he has left. Now that I am about to turn 61, this song hits me like a sledgehammer.

Bob Seger was the consumate story teller. I'm sure he spoke of his memories. He switches the meanings up so it relates to young and old both. He represents the Detroit sound of hard driving rock and roll.

The really great thing about this song, is that, now that you've heard it once, you're going to keep coming back to it throughout the rest of your life. And, it will be more intensely meaningful to you at every single age in which you revisit it. It's one of those rare songs that will continue to get better to you with every new stage of life, from now on and forever more within your lifetime.
I was fortunate enough to be the exact right age for this song to literally have been central to my outlook on life since I was an 18 year old who was already struck with nostalgia-addiction.

Transcendental song. Older guy looking back on his youth and his dalliances with his young lady friends. Wistful and nostalgic. Bob is one of the best story tellers in rock and roll history. "Hollywood Nights," "Roll Me Away." You should do "Like a Rock" next. It's sort of Part 2 of this song.

"Night Moves" is considered heartland rock. Most of Seger's songs fall into either that or the hard rock, rock and roll, soft rock and country rock genres.
Seger is fabulous and is one of my favorites. You can't go wrong diving into his music. Other songs worth a listen include Turn the Page, Mainstreet, Still the Same, Hollywood Nights, Against the Wind, You'll Accompany Me, Shame on the Moon, Roll Me Away, Like a Rock, and Shakedown, but there are many more.
Very glad you enjoyed this and hope to hear more reactions to Bob Seger.

I have a friend who's Mom went to High School with Bob in Detroit. She says he used to fall asleep in class all the time from being out with all the MoTown bands all night. She asked him on several occasions if he was worried about his grades. Bob replied every time, I don't need this shit, I'm gonna be a Rock Star. One of my favorite 70s early 80s artists. As you said, all his music comes from a genuine place. It's not fake or made up. Something you can REALLY identify with. Great reaction. Keep the Bob Seger rolling.

Growing up in 1970s Windsor/Detroit, Bob Seger's music was part of the atmosphere. Even today I hear his songs in regular rotation on the radio when I visit. He was a radio mainstay and local treasure long before he hit nationally, He looked and sang like a working man, and he sang working man songs - honest and relatable, without pretension.
Bob Seger is the very definition of Heartland Rock. I'm so happy he ended up gaining the acclaim for which he laboured so many years.

Love your reaction to the great Bob Seger! I was just a baby when this song came out, so I grew up with it playing in the background. Of course, I didn't understand what the heck he was "actually" singing about back then! lol!!😅I just loved the sound of the music and his vocals!!🤗 IMO... it's an epic and timeless song both sonically and lyrically!! Anyway, great reaction and definitely dive into Bob's catalogue!!! It's nothing but greatness. For whatever it's worth, here are some of my personal favs...
    1.) "BEAUTIFUL LOSER"
2.) "YOU'LL ACCOMP'NY ME" (yes accompany is spelled like that in the songs title! lol!!)
3.) "TURN THE PAGE"... (Metalica does an epic rendition of this one!👊)
    4.) "HER STRUT"
    5.) "THE FIRE DOWN BELOW"
Whether you choose from one of those or not... you can't go wrong with any Bob Seger song! Great reaction!! Peace and light...💞

  • @koretmulder6316
    @koretmulder6316 Před rokem +1

It's incredible, because it starts out very basic, just kids trying to find a private place to get their rocks off. And then he pushes the lyrics into a whole other place. Yes, it's a song about teenage fumblings, trying to figure it out, getting it where ever you could find a place to give it a try, but then he moves to reflecting on how really impactive those brief hours were. I remember, yeah, yeah yeah, I remember...
I remember, even now. Who doesn't? Sweet Summertime.
And then that ominous, bitter-sweet, "...with autumn closing in..."

  • @FrozenRose816

The atmosphere in that breakdown ("woke last night to the sound of thunder" etc.) has always gotten me. It reminds me of summers as a kid, waking up in the middle of the night to hear distant thunder, well before the time you could pick up a phone and find out "how far off" it was. The entire song is just nostalgic in so many ways.
And as I am typing this you are talking about the nostalgia of the song, and you are spot on. I did grow up in the 70s and remember this song when it came out. When someone who didn't grow up in that time can get all that from the song, you know the songwriting is just that good.
If you want more atmosphere, listen to the live version of Turn The Page. Along with Night Moves, it is tied for my all-time favorite Bob Seger song, and I think you will really love it.

I'm thankful to have grown up with this music. In those days this music made me see how growing up through adolescents, teens and into a young man was highly adventurous, meaningful, and yet seemed like a continuum of time. Now much later I understand just how those playful and experimental days seem to fly away through the night. Though less feelings of being adventurous and and acceptance of greater limitations it's more a time to reflect and pass on hopefulness to another generation. So SalvoG you right. If one grew up listening to this song night moves may have been printed deeper in the heart and etched in memory and "night moves" may have a different meaning.

Anyone who was a teenager in the late 50s-early 60s, feels this song to the core of their being. By the late 1960s, the whole attitude towards sex, I think, changed a lot. I don't think sex was experienced the same way. I'm old enough (73) to appreciate the sentiment in this song. I certainly understand the idea of sex in the back of a 1960 Chevy wherever it happened, outside of town or at the local drive-in--Night Moves with really no clue what you were doing. By the late 1960s-early 1970s that began to change and sex was more open and not so hidden. That was definitely true for most of the 1970s. I've always loved Bob Seger, and I'm glad you chose this track to react to.

The 70s had some of the best music in every genre. Top quality bands, breakout classic solo artists and amazing musicians wrote and performed incredible songs without a lot of technical interference. It was chaotic at times but as you are seeing, the results still hold up today. Another artist you may want to consider is Glenn Campbell singing Galveston. He has a guitar solo that is extraordinarily complex and beautiful.

Great, great rock & roll from one of the Masters of Rock. Bob Seger generated and enhanced so many wonderful memories from my teenage years. Friends, girls I loved (or thought I loved), parties, heartbreaks, romantic and just life's disappointments. This also brings out raw nostalgia of nights filled with anticipation, unmet expectations, and the very rare perfect night where everything went better than I imagined and this song has the power to help me go back in time and have those sad, happy, and bittersweet memories of great times taken for granted then and the desire to return and relive now.

Love your reactions. This one is particularly near & dear. I'm a Michigan guy born & raised. My parents knew Bob from playing at the local bowling alley in Waterford, MI before he was famous. I don't remember the first time I heard Night Moves, or any Seger for that matter... He/his voice/these songs have been in my bones since I was born (1979). He was just "the sound" of when/where I grew up. When I was 32 I had some crazy panic attack thing - hard to explain. Long story short, while healing from that, I had this overwhelming nostalgia/gratefulness for my teenage years. I'm a musician, so, one night I was re-learning how to drive, went through a subdivision, past the girls house I used to sneak out with when I was 13/14 yrs old. Something magical happened & I had these pieces of a musical painting mysteriously begin arriving. I sewed them together to make my own "Night Moves" without knowing I was doing it. I heard the real Night Moves just recently & realized there are overlaps, example, the peak of my song I'm belting out "I remember". My relationship with this song is crazy & This week I've gone down the rabbit hole of getting emotional watching different ppl react/hear it for the first time. Yours is at or near the top. You really listen & really got it. Beautiful to watch, Man, thank you! Here's my own Night Moves, called "The Honeymoon Sweet". I found the girl on FB & mailed her the song with a letter explaining how it came to be. The rest she could remember lol. Hope you throw on some headphones & enjoy. soundcloud.com/dk18/alexis-2003

The song hits home because just about all of us can relate to some of the lyrcis right? Being a teenager going through first experiences, etc. Not quite an adult, but still old enough, and not a care in the world.

He drove a Chevy Impala! Awe the good ole days! How's that for a story? True true true! My favorite song is Turn the Page!

Its hard not to believe in magical things when you hear something like this. It seems so deep in the human spirit and heart that it can't be just earthly, just notes on paper somewhere. Nothing without real magic could sound this good, be so emotional, and touch so deep.

I got to see Bob in concert many times, from his very long hair to his grey hair, and I was never disappointed. Turn the Page is great, so is Beautiful Loser, Still the Same, Like a Rock, Roll Me Away, the Famous Final Scene, etc, etc

Thanks, Salvo.. this is probably my favorite by Bob... I especially love the evocative end.. "woke last night to the sound of thunder.... with autumn closing in.."... when you get to that point in the song, you realize how is was a "remembrance" of HS .... always enjoy your reactions...

I first bought this song on a 45 RPM record when it first came out. And today it definitely reminds me of being young and carefree. I didn’t get to see Bob until the early 1980’s. But he was so amazing in concert. Mainstreet, Turn The Page (Live) and Still The Same are good ones to check out. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg with Bob Seger.

Top 5 all time song imo. Not only the double meaning of the title, but the concept of being in the autumn of your life looking back at the summertime. It's just fantastic all the way around. (Especially at 54 lol)

This song brings back memories for me. In particular when this came out, I was 18 and living in Nebraska and at the time the drinking age was 19, so buddy and I hooked up with a couple of chicks and drove down to Kansas (In a Chevy van) where the drinking age was 18. On the way there we were playing this album. This song so worked perfectly.😎🎸👌
