Somewhere Lars is watching this thinking "Holy shit, did I do that?"
@@Max-el7zd bro no it wasn’t now yeah but back then no
More like, "Holy shit, why did I splice this together" lol
Cocaine that’s how
@@pancakesgo7995 I'm still looking for the doc that I saw that talked about the engineer splicing drum tracks during AJFA.
@@wrongway3129 I'm on the fence as to whether it's true or not. It's a fairly difficult song to play, but it can be done. If Lars did play it without splicing, then it was easily the absolute pinnacle of his ability and he hasn't touched those heights since. The fact they didn't play it live until 16 years after its release is also pretty telling.
IMO Justice was Lar's at his peak.
+VX84 no doubt
Yep
+VX84 no, in my opinion master of puppets was his best work talent wise, it’s just that you can hear the drums much more clearly in justice
FilmPunk No way. His drumming on Master of Puppets isn't bad at all, but there's no way it can be compared to his drumming on ...And Justice for All.
bullshit apostrophe is bullshit
People forget how influential Lars was at this time in thrash. This album was completely different than anything prior. Each song on this album was a marathon. Each song was a complete composition. No wonder he took a break for the next decade.
I wish I could see the timeline where they kept making records like this
@@diabeticmonkey I would kill to see the universe that Metallica went into prog thrash
@@TrainsNStuff Spot on
Doubt it was actually him playing in the studio version. Probably a hired studio musician
@@ConanObrien22 im under the understanding he had help, as well.
Can we just take a minute to appreciate how perfect this guys drumming is, holy shit.
He’s unreal. Even adds some extra stuff here and there to make it even harder. Absolute animal!
RIP Josh's legs.
Lmao
Lmao I said the same! That was inF'Nsane! I listened to it through my speaker system, after gettin an email alerting he uploaded "Eve", and just listening through a 6 watt bluetooth speaker but switched to the speaker system & the constant rumble from the double bass literally shook the house
They had a good run
+JediTheDrummer lmao..that's great!.. but something tell's me they're gonna keep kickin as for the socks he was wearing.. they're dun for haha!
Ray Glackin my leg
The drumming on ajfa(especially dyers eve) is Lars’ masterpiece
can't deny it ! fuckin crazy kickass track! 🔥😎
Just a shame he couldn't play any of it. Most of the drum tracks were recorded in little pieces.
And how disapointed was i after the wait for the black album and it was all gone....
@@stevenlornie1261 he can but not like the studio version lol
@@stevenlornie1261 literally how all music is recorded numbnuts
Dude, this wasn't a drum cover, this was a brutal foot endurance test. Awesome shit as always man.
Even Lars says this is the hardest Metallica song to play. Great job man.
Damn that was awesome man. I hope you get the call the day Lars decides to go full time art dealing. :)
The-Art-of-Guitar *amend, brother..amend*
The-Art-of-Guitar but I wonder will Lars like Josh's stuff so much that he tries to download it from Napster.
That's just awful. And weird
I think you are better than Lars and would be a much better drummer for the band
That roast was just hard.....
my legs are getting cramps just watching this

Still true. 66Samus could eat a sandwich to this while I'm working up to it.
@@joshsteffen 66Samus is an amazing drummer as well. His "take no prisoners" cover is a fucking blast! Oh yuuurrr

4:37 my favorite part of the whole song! Idk why it just sounds so cool!
The riff, or that one little part of the riff?
Ordinary stuff on the drums
As a drummer this is my favourite type of fill, I love cymbal chokes man
Looks very stylish
It’s the groove.
They should've performed this live while they had the chance. Every live version lars doesn't seem to have control over one of his legs. This performed live in 89-92 would have been legendary
Max Lu try the demos
Martin Simeonov dyers eve in Seattle 89 would have been the show
The chance took place when Lombardo joined them on stage.
I don't think they wanted to.
The double bass parts were spliced together, Lars couldn’t play this in 89 either
200k subs= Dyer's Eve at 150% speed
200K Subs= Judas Priest Painkiller
he would need painkillers at one and a half speed
I think 150% speed would literally kill his legs xD
lol

Admit it, that's all anyone's actually here for.
Great cover by the way Josh.
as well as at 4:20!.. with some sick rendering at 4:24!
My legs cramped up just watching you double kick the verse. Props to you.
I remember when you had like 39k and said you would do dyers eve at 100k... You kept your promise
I remember that too dude!
Yeah, i was like, "He's only saying that because his channel is small" but he kept his bet :D

Nice dude! Your snare sounds amazing!
Same I was here at 15k and he said that
Somewhere right now, Lars Ulrich feels a disturbance.
This song is pretty fuckin hard to play live when you're 52
+HiT MaN exactly
+bajholster Hah. Heheheh. I love that.
when you can't play drums and youre starting to hate Lars
+MrBardoTube In all honesty though, don't hate Lars. There is nothing wrong with poking fun at him. But the man does deserve a little respect for what he has done. I mean Josh is covering what Lars wrote.
Impressive!
the part at 4:24 before the breakdown is f*****g EPIC!!!
not to mention the breath he lets out at the very end from the pace of the drumming being so intense...just awesome!!! 😎
Forget miracle diets and exercise fads -- Dyer's Eve is all the workout you need! Very well done.
Even for bass and guitar tho :D
And Bleed 😂
Blackened and Battery are the same.
@@MnyFrNthng I'd say Dyers Eve is harder because of the 16th note double kick during the whole of the verses, whereas Battery and Blackened just have gallops and weird off centred beats
Before Lars leaves this earth, i would like to see him play dyer's eve with the full double bass, then i could die in peace.
Amazing job, Josh. You deserve a cold one, that performance was epic.
multiestonian
Even when Lars was in the studio, he looped the double kick because it was too fast.
Jake Baker thats just a rumor i think, unless you have a source?
hornswoggle lover39 I can confirm it. I met him and asked and he said that since they were in the studio he didn’t play it all the way. He did a section and if I remember correctly he said he did each part bit by bit. Basically he recorded it separate from the other parts. I know James looped vocals too on this album because it hurt his voice (listen to isolated vocals and you can hear spots that sound exactly the same) so It makes sense that Lars would’ve done that with drums. Also he was a huge coke head back then so that def helped.
That would probably be the thing that kills him.
Didn't know lars was a coke head i always had him pegged as a pepsi guy.
Always imagine James saying “cannot cope without U2” lol
Without CZcams.
F-ing awesome f-ing job dude! God dang 👏👏👍😎
Playing this with pens is hard enough....

You weren't kidding damn thats 🔥 right there
I just love how at 0:41 he's just like "Yo watch this" and then just destroys drumming
2:05 that lil fill is nice!

He's getting better can't you tell
Yeet Yeyehe he cant to the double kicker during dear mother dear father anymore
Art Hazard No cocaine dude
This proves the studio editing. Lars neve played this full double bass live.
he probably could have done it back then though (and he did obviously do the double bass)...studio editing is not as it is now.
Man... After all these years, this is one of the best drum covers ever. Love your new stuff, but these covers were amazing. Great drummer.
Thanks!
There are no human words good enough for you sir. At least not in my language anyway. I am an old man now and this song came from my childhood and you had me smiling like a Cheshire cat for 5 1/2 minutes straight and in that 5 1/2 minutes I felt young again. Thank you for your work
Phenomenally outstanding
Thanks!
Nah nigga...this ain't a drum cover. This is just the drum track. This is the guy who actually recorded the track for Dyers Eve. Oh yeah, Lars wasn't the one that tracked it. This guy did.
All jokes aside, this made me wanna relearn the song. CAUSE GODDAMN BOY, this is literally note for note, plus that extra roll you did on the snare towards the end. By far, the best cover of any covers.
Gotta say, I love your videos. I'm a professional music teacher and you're the first person I've seen who records drum covers using different players styles. Any of the others have been content to just record covers of the musician in question. I use your videos to demonstrate players rhythmic styles in music even though I'm not a drum teacher. Please keep up the good work. Thank you.
+David Powderly that's great! Thanks.
This is my favorite drum cover on CZcams I keep coming back to it
3:08 huh, I am relaxing for a while
My legs hurts when I watch this
How did lars even create this? I mean...
Lars in his prime. Maybe a little cocaine helped too
Edit: Holy shit thanks for the likes guys. I've never gotten this many likes before 😂🤘🏼
He's a good drummer. AJFA was his best creative work IMO.
Well that's true.
All facts right here guys.
As we see, some drummers can play Metallica's songs better than Lars, but they never compose it. Lars is not the best drummer on the world, but his success on the metal music scene is not to be repeat by anyone in the future. Great man from Europe :-)
Bro you're just the best drummer on CZcams. Best of all
I've been looking for some old metallica songs as drum covers, you've hit the nail on the head! Thanks for not being "flashy" with your drumming like other videos - that gets boring to watch quickly. Great work and exactly what I've been searching for!
+Aperture67 ;)
Lars is a great composer. Nobody said he could play studio quality drums translated into live feel night after night...
Now, for the next milestone Bleed by Meshuggah :)
Never in all my years have I EVER seen a pair of feet move so quickly! That was...UNREAL. The speed...the dexterity...the poise...the ability...beyond impressed. Color me a fan!
My favorite fill from Lars is at 0:59 Thank you Josh, you played it so good!!!
DEAR MOTHER, DEAR FATHER
YOU’VE CLIPPED MY WINGS BEFORE I LEARNED TO FLY...
The one we've all been waiting for.... Thanks Josh!!! This is phenomenal!
Your double bass just seems so effortless... how the hell do you do that? I always cramp up halfway through this one!
+Eric Tysor it definitely isn't easy. That's why I dread doing these kind of songs. Lots of prep
I think you set your beaters close, atleast that’s what it looks like to me...I used to do that back when I used to play this kind of stuff in a band
Tighten up your pedals, use long boards, keep your feet halfway up the pedal boards.
pop a few midols,
@Schaefer Lawn Care & Property Maintenance LLC Good tips. I haven't been drumming that long (and my tempo consistency is like Lars on a bad day), but I tightened my bass pedals and place my feet halfway on the pedals. By doing that, I went from cramping up midway on the intense double bass section on One to actually being able to get through it with a little bit of consistency.
Incredible! Bravo! Even Lars can’t play this 😆 Justice was Peak Lars. When people say he isn’t a good drummer, I direct them to this song. This is hands down my favorite Metallica song, and this is hands down the best drum cover I’ve seen.
Those last few bars at the end of the last solo are just incredible. Crazy foot work through the verses! Stamina!!
1 word: BEAST. you and Lars are both BEASTS. I would pay seeing you play with Metallica live.
pretty sure even metallica would pay him to play with them lol
This dude is by far the best overall drummer on youtube. Has chops and is an entertainer. How the hell are there 20 dislikes on this? Do these Travis Barker fans not realize how difficult this song is to play?
That fucking kick pattern christ almighty
Drummers who can play this song: Can I skip leg day now?
Who the fuck disliked this really!?!? Easily the best cover of this song I've ever heard. Keep it up bro 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I really like that you acknowledged in one of your Q&A vids that keeping up with the double kick is one of your weaknesses. Yet you still persevered with this one. :) you're an amazing drummer dude! I'm only a recent viewer but best believe you're gained a subscriber and will check on more of your videos :D I appreciate your vids man keep it heavy!
+Anthony Rodriguez thanks dude.
I love how this dude literally is like MORE THAN HAPPY to serve the drums. hes like 'you wan't some snares, YESSIRR HERE'S THEM SNARES. I HOPE YOUR READY FOR THE APPETIZER OF CRASH'S I HAVE GETTING READY IN THE KITCHEN, HERE IT COMES 3 2 1 and SERVES IT WITH A SMILE.
I'm speechless... You took that song to another level...
Tallica fan here and I love Lars but this song is one of the songs that killed Lars's legs.. lol
LARS was a BEAST and still is, imo, he just got older...
Lou Angeles and the fact that he got to play slow and groovie songs for such a long time, which obviously made him lose skills in the fast trashie drum patterns.
I know oooold drummers who rip...
I never saw him place this once live not even on the justice tour. I'm not sure he ever could really play it live.
@Evyatar Hadar not everyone get older the same way
Dave Lombardo?
Congrats, been here since about 35,000 amazing to see you grow as a drummer and a CZcamsr, really proud of you Josh!!!
;)
Bro alternating between 1 and 2 feet kick pedals on the thrash beat is nuts.
Legendary. Playing this stuff as it was on the album is no mean feat, it's awesome to watch. I knew the drumming on this was insane - it's been a favorite for 20 years - but seeing it close up there are a couple of fills and parts I never noticed before, like the end of the solo. EPIC!
Next stop, Meshuggah - Bleed!

such a fun rhythmic album on drums. every song guitar as well. you nailed it man.
...anndddd 4:52 nice short double bass run :) great job man!!
Josh, you should take this to the next level, and record it playing on a giant 9-piece Tama Artstar II kit from the 80's.
+aaronrus I'd love a new setup. I don't have any laying around though and don't see such a purchase coming anytime soon
well, i was thinking just for playing Dyers Eve, to take THAT song to the next level, play it on the same equipment Lars recorded it on. Find a local drummer who owns that it, or a drum store that owns one. the drums are massive, 12", 14", 15", 16" rqck toms, and two 18" floor toms, two 24"x16" bass drums much more spread out, and the high hat is far away... should prove challenging
aaronrus how do you know that's what Lars recorded it on? He may have played that live but that doesn't mean he used the same setup to record the album. For all we know he could have recorded this album on a cheap ass 5 piece set with a double bass pedal that sounded like dog shit in studio and was only made to sound decent in the recording by mixing it to sound decent.
He needs the white and black one lars played in the 90s. the snare sounded like a shotgun.
uome20bukz the drums he recorded 'a year in the life of metallica' are very similar to what was used on AJFA
Death - Scavenger Of Human Sorrow PLEASEEEEE
By FAR the best cover of this in existence. This song might be up there in terms of the most difficult songs to play. The amount of stamina you need first of all is incredible, then the speed, the timing, and this most importantly is extremely tight and audible. This is the only cover I’ve heard that seems to be 100% correct and basically perfect. Can’t say that for any other of the “hardest songs to play on drums” I’ve heard on CZcams. But you’ll get that with a song that wasn’t even recorded as a single take or even significant takes, just small chunks and put together
I'm waiting for delta empire to do this
Jerry now that would be epic. I’m actually surprised he hasn’t done any Metallica especially since he does a lot of metal and even classic rock. Surprised no A7X either. Would love to hear him cover this and also Beast and the Harlot and A Little Piece of Heaven
What an accomplishment! Perfect execution, sound & vibe! I think you have the world record here!
I remember one timeyour brother was in town and me and fish watched you guys jam for about an hour. When you two were just about done he asked "any requests?". I said Dyers Eve and he just laughed.
That was badass...awesome job bro, ima watch it again
Hands down my favorite metallica song all time. You nailed it
You're simply the best, man! Have been following you for a while now. Great attention to detail. Spectacular covers. Slayer | Metallica | Pantera, you've covered them all!
That was awesome!!! To see someone pull that song off is totally amazing, great job !!! As for you lars haters , lars is in his fifties now , you can't expect a man at that age to pull of something that he did in his mid twenties, age takes its toll on us all in the end, James vocals are not the same as he was in his twenties and I don't see anyone hating on him , lars is a legend !
All true
Why not? Lombardo could. As could pete sandoval etc.
@@davistheyeti you should treat them as exceptions, not the standard.
@@hyperbiscuit2284 not at all. There's a multitude of drummers who play to a higher standard of similar ages. Mickey Dee, Scott Travis, Tom Hunting, i could go on for ages. It's just excusing Lars' bad drumming.
@@davistheyeti basically what I'm saying is that your using an already superior drummer (Dave Lombardo) as your baseline for the comparison, and saying that Lars is bad because he's not as good as Lombardo, which does nothing but make Lombardo look worse by comparison. By using him as the baseline, you're essentially saying that Lombardo represents an average metal drummer and that in order to be good, you have to be better than Lombardo. Just remember that your comparisons should use an average drummer as a baseline, not an above average one.
now imagine plating that live after like 6 songs then say "lars sucks"
playing*
There is a reason and justice for all was never played as a whole album ! Lol
the problem is lars usually play it without the double bass in the chorus. that's why people say he sucks he avoids this song live or play a slightly simplified version of this. but in fact, he only played this version in the studio (not sayin he sucks tho)
+Manoloutti evenin studio he couldnt play it right still. It took so many takes
there is Amon amarth and countless other death/thrash bands using nothing but double cross and Blast beats,
This is amazing. Ill never be able to do this. All praise to you
When people talk about their favorite yt drummer, Josh has always been my go to. Not to fan out but this cover is unbelievable. What a workout!
I dont know anything about musical instruments i mean like nothing, but this is so satisfying to watch, sorry for my ignorance but what is the double bass thing that everyone seems to talk about? Is it when he moves his legs so fast?
Yes. The big drum that you play using your foot/feet is called the bass drum. In certain genres, the bass drum is played with two beaters, two pedals and two feet - and this type of playing is called the double bass. “Dyers Eve” features a lot of impressive, high-tempo double bass. I hope I answered your question.
Charis Apostolidis yes that clarifies it, thank you
that double bass...
Nicely done. Very smooth and accurate

what is harder Dyers Eve or Angel of Death
+Vito DiGiovanni Angel of death. Faster
Vito DiGiovanni I honestly think Angel Of Death is easier, as its on the downbeat and that makes it a little easier to play; and it's a shorter song. Dyers Eve is on the upbeat and a longer song and really doesn't let up besides some of the slower parts here and there. Not to discredit Lombardo's playing on angel of death, it's insane
+Musa Tariq Yep. AOD is faster, but not harder to play than Dyers Eve.
It's faster but Dyers Eve requires more endurance
I love both, but i think Dyers eve.
Ive watched 20+ covers of this song and you sir did it the best
Absolutely spot on! Your years of disciplined and consistent practice are abundantly apparent. You have to broken many a stick while mastering this.
