Why the U.S. never got universal health care

  • Every fight over the Affordable Care Act is a reminder of the bigger truth about the U.S. health care system: It's really a patchwork, not a system, because we never decided what our priorities were. Here's a look at how it developed and why it's not the kind of health care safety net other countries have.

The money thing is having private insurance compagnies (profits must be made the more the better) they have about 1.8 million administrative people. Hospitals having high insurance costs due to malpractise. Medicines are up to 10 times the price you find in other countries . Again compagnies making huge profits. I even suspect price agreements. And a government that doesn't care about the wellbeing of their citizens. And if half of the population doesn't know how its done in the rest of the world. And the other half doesn't care. Then their healthcare system will stay in place for a long time.

@@fcl2024 yes its horrible how they treat you in america. i totally agree. but all this could be stopped with a universal health care. take an example to scandinavia. pay more taxes for free health care and school. that is what bernie wants as well. or do something like we have in the netherlands. pay a monthly payment to your health care insurance company and get every help you need. now i have to say i am not happy with the system here. but its better then nothing. infect we have the second best health care system in europe. probably even in the world. so yeah i get your concerns and i see that you want to have it changed as well which is more then logic. but for some reason false flags and illegal wars is priority number 1. after that maybe the citizens. there is no reason why you have to pay more for medicines in america then anywhere else. its pointless. its greed and nothing more. i dont understand why no government thought about things like this. very strange to hear if you ask me

Oh forget him he’s just an idiot.
The reason we don’t have Universal Healthcare boils down to the same thing Abraham Lincoln and George Washington warned us about. Partisan division and rivaling ideologies.
You see, even the most far fetched cost for a real universal and free healthcare system covering every single citizen of the United States. This includes all doctors appointments, free medications, all surgeries, acute dental care and etc. The total cost is estimated to be around 32-33 trillion dollars each decade. Now you might see that number as absolutely crazy and unthinkable, but hold your horses for just a bit.
Annually, the Federal Government spends about 3.9 trillion dollars on healthcare, or roughly 18% of GDP. Over a decade, that’s ~39 trillion dollars. What also have to our benefit is even though we have the third largest population in the world, we have by a wide margin the largest budget per person in the world at over 11.000 dollars per citizen. That’s about 2x as much all other countries in the world bar second place Switzerland with 8.000 dollars. Germany, France, Norway, Denmark, Japan, Sweden and all other developed nations have between 5000-6500 per person. Do you understand how ridiculous it is that we don’t have universal healthcare? Do you know just how unrivaled we’d be in healthcare if we had?
You can thank sincerely the Republican Party for blocking EVERY single proposal for a universal healthcare system. Truman’s Fair Deal, The Clinton Healthcare Plan & PPACA that barely passed and was severely compromised on.

I use the VA. And had Tricare, while in Military and as a spouse. VA in Texas was horrific. But you can milk the system there much easier when you exaggerate certain illnesses. More money, going through motions. OR, they refuse treatment to those who need it the most. Make it difficult enough, that you give up, go away, and die. Most treatment for illness or disease the Doctor Prescribes. But they are unconcerned, any after all they are Corresponding Course and Medical School bottom tier Grads. Getting big checks, for little work. Go to a VA parking lot, see all those Corvettes, BMWs, ECT. Or your local Wal-Mart. What kind of car do you see in those parking space. Decked out Vans, sports cars, ECT. While GRANDMA w a cane, Pregnant women, those in Cancer treatment, waddle into store. With a 99 Honda. That system there is corrupt. Such as, you may go in for Sleeplessness due to Depression and anxiety. But instead you can get listed for Sleep Apnea. Treating you for depression is more costly (blood test, counseling, drugs). And inconvenient for some (long waits for appt, forced use of substandard Dr., transportation problems, anxiety of dealing w VA). Which pays much much more.
I know a guy who while deployed hung his flight vest above his bed. It fell, hit him in the head. He was seen for a bump. When he started to get into trouble stateside. He blamed it on a head injury and PTSD. So he was allowed to beat his wife, cuss out Command, skip work ECT. He was Medically Discharged. And recieved another 90 percent from the VA. For faking! Meanwhile, the Vietnam Vet begging for assistance only option is to threaten homicidal ideation to get a 3 day stay. But still be denied entrance into system. Or the Rapist, get treatment, and payment. While the Soldier who was assaulted, harassed, experienced Workplace bullying. Gets a Pap Smear, if they are lucky. They say, you can report sexual assault and receive assistance and care IF someone can vouch for the assault. Oh you mean like The Command, who covered up the assault? The Squad Leader who is only looking out for her career. The Platoon Sgt, who loves that Soldier because he's a Bird of a feather. Or, the co workers and subordinates who joined in on terrorizing you. Glad it's not them. Embarrassment, hopelessness or refusal/minimal treatment of the Victim is COST EFFECTIVE. Where the assaulter, gets more than living wage, benefits, treatment ECT. And sells The drugs he's prescribed to neighbors. Lives a Good Life, with lifetime Healthcare. A clean record, bc you are WILLFULLY BLIND, and believe Military Branches punish like Civilians. No, they don't have to register. The point is you wanna know why healthcare costs so much. Keep believing this tidbit is an exception to the rules. Oh, and there's Dental. The Soldier who did not pay attention while receiving instruction during weapon training, shatters teeth. Or simply has bad hygiene. Gets caps. Lifetime dental. But many who have served Honorably and age, walk around with tooth pain, tooth loss. You do realize Soldiers get their teeth pulled by other Soldiers. Often with complications. It's a month's long course. Have you ever been to a bad dental school?

A national healthcare system is simply not the same as universal healthcare - unless it becomes - one tax-based system and the 'right' of all citizens. Yes, I said it, ...an entitlement. (The opposition to that is enormous!) The wife and I have been in healthcare and watched the process since Hilary Clinton took a shot at it, and where the money-power people spiked it fast to later propose a much different route. Obama was that weakened way, ...resulting only in the creation of additional policies being paid for by taxpayers, but leaving the patchwork described here undisturbed. (The lie was in insurance companies feigning being bankrupted by it all.) Therefore, ...universal healthcare has been 'buried' under a national healthcare program from the beginning. A partial effort in "single payer proposals" is a wuss attempt to bring universal healthcare back to the table - but most people are persuaded to believe it cannot be done without tax increases, that 'research' and universal healthcare can't live side-by-side. Etcetera. I love America - and - what it 'could' be again. ps: to RS & Assoc: untrue, and look beyond money for the 'good' docs my fellow Americans!

Why does healthcare get singled out & nobody complains about having to pay for others roads/bridges/internet/stadiums etc. When they themselves never use it?

Everybody claims they want universal healthcare but they don't get that it would cost them like 50/60 income tax. For it to get in now they would have to convince the majority of people that it is worth paying most your check every month to pay for that surgery some random homeless person needs. I for one would vote against the so called "free" healthcare and would rather deal with some issues myself then be forced to hand over most my cash when me and alot of other folks already struggle to pay for all out crap as is. Little Timmy will just have to go without that transplant unless some rich person or a bunch of middle class people bunch together to make it happen XD. thats a very common misconception. as far as taxes go, it wouldn't have to be increased by much if at all if you look at other countries with universal healthcare. and even if it is increased, the amount you'd be paying in taxes will almost certainly be less than the amount you have to pay monthly to your insurer. also, America has one of the most expensive healthcare systems because of the system we have. Healthcare providers charge so much for surgeries and medicines because they know insurance companies will always try to low ball them with the amount they'd receive as payment, so to counter this they bill patients more than the actual cost to try and get paid a fair amount. this unfortunately leads to the uninsured to have to pay nonnegociated prices which is why you see crazy bills for simple procedures. with our current system, an ambulance ride, for example, can costs over $1k for emergencies (varies depending on location, insurance, etc.) whilst in Canada, its usually just a flat rate of $125 (more or less depending on location). We can definitely afford universal healthcare and everyone would be better for it.

As an American that makes a bit more sense. Thank you for the info. When someone outside my country says free healthcare it makes me mad because it's not free. Universal healthcare is a much better term. Thing in this world is free someone has to pay for the doctors and the equipment that they use to help their people. I'm so used to living off of insurance that all of my money gets taken out of for other people. I'm fine with helping those who need it but it makes me worry about the people who take advantage of it who don't need it when there's a lot of people in this country who really do need it. People will go to the hospital just for a cough and act like they're dying when they're not. Having universal help care would be perfect for people in need like the homeless, and the adoption centers that are taken care of children who've been neglected and abandoned or had their parents killed. That I would be more than happy to pay my taxes too.

      Not really 🤔
The problem is corruption and politicians are involved. The cost of medicines should not be so expensive, but drug companies and hospitals put the prices very high for medication and services.
We need regulations to put an end to high-cost medical services and maybe one day we could have a better America.

If we went the traditional route of universal healthcare, we'd have to nationalize the hospitals and doctors. That means that most doctors and all specialists would receive dramatically lower pay. If we went with a hybrid system, whereby the GVT sets prices (al la Medicare) and doctors/hospitals would have to comply, it still wouldn't work. Some hospitals would fail because they don't have their expenses in order. Providers would also need to reduce their income dramatically or (more likely and what is happening now), play the system such that they do more tests/procedures, make sure they are a part of a hospital (so get a higher reimbursement), or something else. Of course the medical system does not operate under supply/demand/price rules (healthcare is not finite, but ever expanding into things like "pre" hypertension. You don't have it, but we'll treat you anyway). So anything that is proposed must be put through this filter. For example, cutting the number of days a person stays in the hospital may sound great, but if the cost for 1/2 those days is now more than the prior full term, something is wrong (so 3.5 days costs more than 7 days).

Good video but he left out alot of stuff. Healthcare is a business not a right or a charity and the US population is far greater than all the countries he named. He also omitted that Britain got the Hospital Plan because the continent was leveled after the war. Churchill had to give the people somethin g for morale, especially since many had lost everything g and had injuries, let alone deaths in families. He is right in the fact that its a patchwork of systems. Workplaces providing health insurance would have to go away and eliminate all other insurance . The capitalistic economy in America would demand insurance companies compete for customers. Everyone would have to be under 1 and one only provider that could command rates and what hospitals could charge. Not just charge whatever they want, which is what they do now.

    • @parkerwebber4085
      @parkerwebber4085 Před rokem

I believe that the key point of your argument that causes dissension and misunderstanding is the determination of whether or not healthcare is a right. From your standpoint, healthcare is a privilege that is to be earned through merit. Hence, attaching health insurance to employment seems like the logical decision. However, there are some (such as myself) that feel that healthcare should be a human right. The UN states: "Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more." I would argue that the vast majority of these human rights are inherently dependent upon being in a state of good health. One cannot live without it. One cannot sustain work or education while ill. Health underpins so many vital parts of life and society that it is simply impossible to separate it as "a privilege". That isn't to say that changing the American system from its existing state to a universal healthcare system would be simple, or free from "road bumps" along the way. Universal healthcare isn't a flawless system, and the legwork required to convert our system is certainly significant, but I believe that it is worth the effort. Healthcare is essential to human life and happiness, and those are human rights. We should strive to maximize the availability of these rights.
