I owned an 87 Turbo with white pearl paint and the targa top for about 9 years. I had to part with it because I didn't have enough room at my old house for all of the cars we had. I don't miss the issues with the 7M-GTE engine, but it was a great car to drive, especially for a cross-country cruise. I could drive over 12 hours in a day in this car and not feel tired. I hope this car gets restored to its old glory.

I owned the same exact car. Same everything. We live in the Northeast so the car was garage all winter. Nice weather rolls around and I wanted to take it out. Problem the car would not start. I open the hood and found mice or chipmunks took up residents in the turbo. Luckly I was friends with one of the owners of the Toyota dealership. They covered it under warranty even though it wasn't supposed to be warranty. Following winters I made sure the engine was well sealed. Owned the car for 5 years. Never had a problem. Loved the dam car.

I used to own an 88 turbo. Had the same black and crome wheels and everything. I did a full rebuild on the 7MGTE and did a fresh stage 3 clutch. Right after I put in the clutch, it got stolen out of my driveway.
You are absolutely right. They used a screw driver to steal it. I found it stripped and abandoned on the end of a dirt road. Totally heart breaking. I put the stock wheels back on it and pieced it back together. I never got over the theft. I felt violated. I sold it not long after that.

Makes me realize now what I actually have and inspires me to keep it that way! I bought it with the Headgasket issue fixed and and the valves replaced. It got that same powersteering leak a few months after and it and the A/C all fluids, timing belt, master cylinder have been addressed. I was never a car guy before this car, but I've replaced the wheels/tires/rotors/suspension/completely converted ALL the lights to custom LED/ fixed the seized calipers and painted them/swaybars/intake/fiberglass window louvers/decals etc etc.
Never imagined I would love a car THIS much. She has been a complete dream and the attention it gets on the road/gas stations/car shows is something very new to me. The car handled like a boat when I bought it with MASSIVE body roll. With the huge whiteline front swaybar and rear strut brace along with lowering it on Fortune 500 coilovers, it's the best handling car I've ever driven. IMO there is not a better looking car inside and out on the road. These are worth enthusiasts time if you can find the right one and I'm SO glad this was your second car, Car Care Nut :)

Ah, the ole head-gasket, remember them well! My first 1986 Supra I bought with a blown head gasket and I replaced it and drove the car for a couple of years, before selling it to one of my sons. Then we bought an 1989, and the guy we bought it from did a bunch of work to it, but he broke off several of the bolts on the backside of the head, which you can not get to without removing the head, and I made the mistake of replacing the engine, instead of just working on the head. It sat for awhile and after fixing it again, the head gasket blew again! Sold it a year or so later since my son's car needed fixing and I just didn't have the cash to fix the Supra again. Always loved the Supras! I did prefer the 1989s and later! Thanks for sharing!

I bought my 87 Supra in 2005 for $250. I didn't even try to buy the guy down. I want to fix mine up but right now it is in preservation mode. Mine is blue but has the identical interior color as this. The last time I replaced the head gasket, while I had the intake off I took the time to replace the old vacuum lines that leaked thru the rubber with new silicone lines. They are hidden under the intake and would be a nightmare to replace any other time.

Nice car to spend some time on. Glad to see that they plan to keep it on the road. I love the whisper smooth in line 6. Much the same layout as the Datsun Z cars. Well worth it I think. The cockpit interior instrument cluster is very similar to the style Pontiac used on their Grand Prix‘s from the late 60s through the 70s. I wonder if Toyota got that idea from them. Also, in the 1980s and on into the early 1990s the American Auto industry was in its infancy with starting to put aluminum heads on cast-iron blocks. Remember the disastrous “North Star” from GM? Early attempts didn’t work well with the different expansion rates between aluminum and cast-iron. Head gasket technology as well as understanding proper clamping methods has come a long way since then to make these now common combinations work better together. The older cars really are sensitive to regular coolant changes to prevent electrolysis between dissimilar metals causing leaks. It goes a long way to use high-quality antifreeze while monitoring it’s condition regularly.

The first new car I bought was a 1991 Toyota Cressida in Super White with a gray leather interior. That 7M engine was really smooth, except for the head gasket issues. The dealer actually replaced it at 23,000 miles.
I was shocked to see the condition of THE Supra's interior. Over the course of 20 years, my interior remained perfect. That said, maintaining that leather was almost a full time job.
At 190,000 miles the head gasket blew. I would have actually had the job done again, but I wanted a car with airbags. I put it on Craigslist and there was a bidding war. Every bidder was from a Caribbean country, and they all wanted to modify it. I sold the Cressida for $9,600 and bought a new 2008 SAAB 9-5, which is still my daily driver and spectacularly reliable. With 131,000 miles on the clock, I've spent $5,300 on all parts, labor, fluid changes, suspension, exhaust and preventative maintenance.

*Cressidas will always have a place in my heart. Fully loaded 1992 in White Pearl Mica was anniversary gift to Mom. The car was a sweetheart until it ceased to be one. When AC Expansion Valve crapped, he threatened litigation. Toyota was very accommodating so traded it in for a new LS. Ahmed's tear-down video here illustrates why Dad was having none of that BS. Was sweet deal so I fully concurred. Cheers!*

I definitely enjoyed learning how to work on my first supra, an 88 turbo that got junked due to water flood damage. so the engine and transmission were swapped into an 89 Cressida. Now that was a fun car, a Turbo Cressida, perfect leather interior inside, comfortable, Maroon exterior... It looked like a grandmas car and blew people away every time you floored it. As you can see from the profile picture, times have changed though.
Good luck with the car, hopefully they choose to do more than the bare essentials that will keep it on the road.

I bought new a '87 Sport model (had ABS, limited slip diff, TEMS, headlight washers and an ignition key that fell out when driving). I put about 225K miles on it in 8 years until the oil pressure started dropping when it was at freeway speed. (Scarry). That car was way-cool in the day. Looking back on it, it was light years ahead of its time. I'm looking forward to the next installment of the Old Supra. Thanks.

I am looking forward for this series! I used to have a 1989 Supra non-turbo. Black, with Mk IV Supra wheels. Whomever owned it before me, had one of those coffee can mufflers on it, so it was super loud. That's the only thing I didn't like about the car. I bought mine, halfway torn apart in 2006. I had a shop get it back together, with a new clutch and new suspension. It ran so good, but the brakes went out on it, and the clutch wore out on me. I sold it for way less than it was worth in 2011. I drove it on vacation from Washington to Montana, and it was an amazing drive... except for going through Spokane, where they had such terrible ruts in the road, I could barely keep the car straight because of the wide wheels. Never had any other issues with it besides the Targa top leaking a bit.

I'm going to post this on the Supra forum. Should be interesting to follow. It would be nice if it were a Turbo, but this is not atypical of what you find out in the wild. I've been maintaining the same 1987 Turbo since 1996. Most people torque down the head bolts to about 72 foot-pounds and not the manual spec of 54. I have ARP studs that are at 90 foot-pounds since 9 years without issues. What is rusted on the exhaust is the heat shield, not the pipe. It's rare that the upper ball joints go bad. You may find Toyota lower ball joints, if you troll eBay. I didn't like the aftermarket ones. They are too stiff. Other places you can find some parts include: Rock Auto, Drift Motion, and YotaShop.

Yeah the SF guys will eat this up (with the dozen or so that seem to still be active.) I have almost literally this same exact Sup in grey with the same mileage and good god this one is rough. Makes me feel like I have a real gem. Even my steering wheel isn't faded (though I find it hilarious the plastic seatbelt guide is still intact here...) I'm sure all the bushings on mine are tired, but none of them remotely seem to be bad. It's inspiring to hear after your headgasket fix that you've not had issues. I bought mine with the headgasket and valves replaced so I'm hoping I can enjoy her for a very long time. Very nice sport package Sup in your pic!

I remember that car in it’s glory days. Furthermore the wheels that my 86 pick up has are from the turbo version of that car. Back in the 80’s that was the only problem with Toyota, head gasket failure. I forgot how many times I had replaced the ones in my truck and currently is being down for that same reason.

Ahhh I absolutely love these Supra’s!!! It’s not a Binmer either lol my mother, RIP, first husband prior to my dad, owned a lot of Supra’s and loved these cars. I remember he had one that was a dark maroon or whatever Toyota called it, and it had a sport suspension button and manual of course, but that car would absolutely rip!!! I love those old Supra’s!! I even love the newer ones where they changed the body style from the one in this video to the rounded body kit and big shopping cart wing on the rear deck lid. The new ones made by BMW don’t even look that great, but definitely don’t have the reliability of Toyota that I’ve seen. This father is a great dad and his son is very lucky and will absolutely love the car and HOPEFULLY won’t destroy it!! Lol
