  • The navigating compass is sensitive and can be easily damaged. Look what happens if you keep it next to your phone!
Other items such as magnets on rucksacks (designed to retain drinks bladder hoses), power banks, GPS watches etc have the same effect and can permanently affect the compass.
Make sure you keep your compass away from such items at all times.

Phone is the obvious one but it’s annoying as more magnets are creeping into outdoor gear.

Yep, I've got a rucksack with a strong magnet on the sternum strap to attach the bladder hose. It works really well as intended but it affects the compass even if not held right next to it.
I'm not keen on tents that use magnets to hold the doors open for the same reason.

@@fellrunningguide I know what you mean, it’s getting harder to keep your compass safe in your pack.

Powerbanks and some watches too can cause needle fluctuation.

@@briantinkerML Yes lots of things you need to be careful with. I've been caught out by a magnet on the sternum strap of my pack.
I mentioned phones in particular because I often see people putting their compass in the same pocket as their phone on the front of their running vest or pack.
