Map and Compass Skills - The Compass, it's not as complicated as you think!
zhlédnutí 221Před dnem
People sometimes find the compass complicated or confusing to use. They aren't sure what all the lines and numbers on it are for and they hear terminology that they are unfamiliar with, all of which can be intimidating. This video simplifies everything and looks at basic compass use.
Warning - phones and compasses don't mix!
zhlédnutí 95Před 14 dny
The navigating compass is sensitive and can be easily damaged. Look what happens if you keep it next to your phone! Other items such as magnets on rucksacks (designed to retain drinks bladder hoses), power banks, GPS watches etc have the same effect and can permanently affect the compass. Make sure you keep your compass away from such items at all times.

Thanks. BTW I've been looking for a packable pole. I've never seen anything for sale. Can you buy them? If not, how did you make yours?
This pole is just 3 pieces of tent pole that I salvaged from an old tent. I show it in a little more detail in the previous video, linked at the end. An alternative is the Alpkit Vertex carbon pole.
You place the coros where coros tell you without looking where are you'r veines. I wear mine inside my forearm where i have big veines and it’s bether .
Yes I wear it on the upper arm as recommended by Coros. It doesn't fit as well on my forearm.
@@fellrunningguide look for the best veine that you can see, put it on an make a test. ((( If you want ))) for me insiste my forearm, close to my elbow = sweet spot.
Cheers ive been looking at the one wind light weight shelter that is this shape .doubles as a poncho . Think i will try this first with my dd small tarp .good idea.
Yes worth experimenting with a few different set ups with the tarp. It's a versatile bit of kit! Thanks for watching.
Very helpful video, thanks for sharing :)

Phone is the obvious one but it’s annoying as more magnets are creeping into outdoor gear.
Yep, I've got a rucksack with a strong magnet on the sternum strap to attach the bladder hose. It works really well as intended but it affects the compass even if not held right next to it. I'm not keen on tents that use magnets to hold the doors open for the same reason.
@@fellrunningguide I know what you mean, it’s getting harder to keep your compass safe in your pack.
Powerbanks and some watches too can cause needle fluctuation.
@@briantinkerML Yes lots of things you need to be careful with. I've been caught out by a magnet on the sternum strap of my pack. I mentioned phones in particular because I often see people putting their compass in the same pocket as their phone on the front of their running vest or pack.

I use the Coros arm strap and enjoy it. The chest strap caused chafing and I’m still trying to clear up the mark on my chest from it. I wear the coros strap on my upper bicep
Haha, I got this one right straight away...only because I recognise it 🤣
Local knowledge 😉 Thanks for watching.
That foreshortening makes this a very tough one indeed. I had me at the correct cairn and looking in correct direction but at peaks a lot closer than reality.
Yes probably harder to judge off a photo than in real life. Thanks for watching.

have really wanted to like Coros but it seems to just miss the mark everytime for me
Certain things about the watch I love, but the odd thing is better with Garmin. I really hoped that the optical arm strap was going to be an accurate alternative to a chest strap. Again, for a lot of the time it is, but I've also had a couple of glitches with it. So overall: very good but not excellent.
“On the flat…”?? Crossing the 430 contour line does not put one on a plateau. From 420 to 450, the slope is the same. At 430, you’re no flatter than at 420. Go to the end of the fence, walk your azimuth. If you reach 25 m past your estimated distance, begin a rectilinear search pattern.
Sorry, I don't know which point in the video you are referring to?
Thanks, I found both videos interesting and informative. I'm curious, is it common for UK fell running races to require this level of navigation frequently throughout the race? Any notable ones that come to mind?
Glad you found them informative Rory. Most fell races are unmarked, meaning there are no temporary flags or arrows to follow and some parts are on rough ground rather than well defined trails so the runners need to either know the route or navigate it during the race. What generally happens is that people get to know the route if they have done the race before, so as long as there are people in front who know where they are going then other runners simply follow them. The difficulties arise in foggy conditions when people lose sight of those in front. The longer Lake District races have most potential for people going wrong, Wasdale and Duddon are prime examples. Most races stipulate that runners need to carry a compass and a map of the route, but that doesn't mean that everyone knows how to use them!
@@fellrunningguide Interesting, indeed I read about the FRA pack requirements and the strict rule about not using a GPS device. As a runner who has heavily relied on my Fenix watch's maps to get me through all sorts of trails, my heart sank as soon as I saw that rule! But I decided it would be fun and useful to try and learn how to navigate properly (that's why I'm here now binging your fantastic content!!) but I also am discovering how interesting I find maps and navigation. Anyway, I entered the race I was looking at-Pen-y-ghent (which I've walked before), which is only 10.5km and from what I've seen of some videos it has markings, and even a course route on the map. So I think it's a good starter race. But I do want to get out and challenge myself so I will be looking at some longer ones in the Lakes as longer-term goals and see if I can get myself into some foggy situations 😄 Thanks again!
@@rorysmith7211 The navigation features on your watch can be really useful to help you learn navigation skills. Eg you can try to navigate by map and compass then check on your watch to see if you are where you think you are. Also the Fenix will give you a very accurate grid reference that you can then pinpoint on a map. Obviously you can't do this during a race but you can in training. Good luck in the race.
@@fellrunningguide Great idea about the watch. I'll try that. Thanks!

Imagine doing that in a storm with someone in your group needing to get to some help. These kind of exercises are so important, thanks for doing them.
Cheers! Glad you like these tasks.
Very helpful video Dave... Out of curiosity, what size pack do you run with when you take a shelter? I'm pretty new to trail running and packing efficiently is becoming a bit of a learning curve
Hi Nathan. I can get this tarp and my little stove and brew kit into a 10L pack. In cold weather though I will also take a warm layer to put on whilst I'm stopped so that takes up more room so then I'd go for a 15L pack. Glad you found it useful, thanks for commenting. Dave

Am I right that the Scottish map didn't have the colour shading indicating access land as there is none north of the border?
Yes correct. Also no public rights of shown in Scotland, just paths that exist in the landscape. Much easier to plan a route!

I really liked the toe box and the grip but found on steep ground they really aggravated the backs of my heels and my achilles (not something I usually have an issue with). It's a shame the heel cup is quite so tight and high.
I agree Anna, on steep downhills the heel tab feels too high and puts pressure on my achilles.
I like that, did you get it from Japan?
Yes, but unfortunately there was a 6 month wait!
Plenty of water and mud around to test them at the moment. Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Good review, Dave. Look forward to hearing how they perform on a run. Maybe hard to compete with the extensive Inov8 range these days.

Nice upgrade Dave 👍 Quality shelter 💪 have a look at bear bones Bikepacking poles 'pole-a-bear' very well priced, ultralight, reliable and either a standard pole (he does them in various lengths) or a custom sized one. He makes little pole extensions which are handy. You can pick a slightly longer than recommended pole or pole plus extension and use the pole on a slight incline to give more room or when pitched low or more loft when you want more ventilation. The pole is a worthy investment, especially if you want to leave the poles at home or if your pitching as a base while you go off hiking or running with the poles.
Cheers I'll take a look. I don't often use trekking poles so I could do with something a bit longer than my Alpkit Vertex pole which only just works.
