Excellent walk through. I just ordered one, now that the price is even less than the H4 (under $200!). But to get that price down, lots of accessories no longer come with it. Just the quality sound of the stereo mics alone, on the H4, are worth the price of the whole unit. And I hear the H6 is even better. 👍
Bought the H6 in 2018, it was so daunting to try to understand at that I've only just now took it out again, and thanks to your amazing tutorial, I now know how to use it! Thank you!
This was probably the absolute BEST and simple walkthrough ive watched to setup my zoom h6! You saved me so much time so thank you!
Good to hear it! Thanks for watching
I'll second that. Great job.
7:00 minutes in video, plug-in power is not for connecting usb but is for mic/line input jack which is in X/Y capsule. This input is used for using lav or external mic and plug-in power power can be used to power this mic 2.4 v. Page 8 and page 88 of Zoom H6 manual
I've had one of these for a couple of months to record my podcast. I hate to admit this, but I just bought a new condenser mic and was having so many issues with how quiet it was and end up buying a cloud lifter to get it back up without distorting it with increasing the gain. Literally 3 minutes in to this video when you were talking about the -20 db switch I looked at my recorder and I had that turned on on my mic and switching that off fixed my issue and now I can return the cloud lifter that I don't need yet.
Thank you for saving me $150!
Simple yet very detailed. Thanks for the info.
This is by far the best tutorial for a product I haven't bought yet but will definitely consider more to buy after watching the whole video! Thank you for making it's so easy to understand for a guy who have never touched an audio device before!
Appreciate that! Happy to help
Great walkthrough thank you so much! Gives me the confidence to start working this thing I just got in the mail ;-).
Thanks for this awesome walkthrough! Just ordered one of these!
Great video, thanks! Just bought one and this was very helpful
Awesome review. Many thanks! You are brilliant at what you do. Keep up the quality content. Cheers from Copenhagen, Denmark.
Thanks for this information. One question, does monitor mixer affect only line-out port or also headphone out port?
Great tutorial, thank you.
Thanks for this, pretty basic, but that's what I needed to get going!
Thanks so much! God bless!
Fantastic! Buying one now I couldn't decide between the H4 or H6 this sealed the deal
Yeah H4 is very limited in comparison. Good choice!
Great info. Very informative! Thanks for sharing!
Really good video helped a lot
Thank you so much! I'm renting this recorder and found your video super helpful to get started.
i guess im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an instagram account?
I stupidly lost the password. I love any tips you can give me.
@Langston Lyle Instablaster =)
@Zahir Emiliano I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process now.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Zahir Emiliano it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out !
@Langston Lyle no problem xD
Just got one. Thanks for the video. Very straight forward.
Thank u.. u save my life! the best explanation ever!
Real damn good crash course, thank you so much!
Cheers!
Thank you for sharing.
In my experience with the zoom h6, the Monitoring Mix is very useful in both play back and recording volume. Usually I set the levels at about 6.5dBm and will do amazing job. Otherwise, the production sound quality seems so flat.
I am considering using this to vlog. I'd like to hide the wires as much as possible. How would you recommend a person uses the H6 in that way? Also when you host a podcast (another project) and it's you and one or two more people what attachments do you use? Thanks!
THANK YOU
Thanks for this video.
Thanks for making his clear, this device looked a bit intimidating but this video helped me make sense of it!
Glad I could help!
Is red button is smooth as compare to other buttons. I'm asking because, When you press other buttons, It sounds little bit but red button don't.
I want to confirm, is there any problem with mine or is it same for all.
I'm at the very moment when I'm just starting to gather information about a video podcast. I need two medium quality microphones for starters, 2 pairs of headphones I have from sennheiser and a camera to film full hd on sd card 45 minutes or maximum one hour. My question is if I could use the BM 800 Condenser microphone with Zoom h6 input to get quality sound and the h6 zoom output at the microphone input in a camcorder? Thank you
very happy with h6 all Black
Very helpful. Thanks!
I've had my H6 for a couple years now, this video by far is the very best tutorial on the H6 that is on CZcams...
Thanks :) going to be recording a new one soon
what about the left and right when do you need to have those lit whats the difference
What do you use it for and what are the problems with this device?
This is great. So helpful. Thank you 😊
So glad!
Great review. Very clear and concise.
Much appreciated!
Wonderful Review!
Great vid! I would add that you might want to change the sample rate to 48khz if you're going to use your recordings for video, it's the most commun standard for video as far as I know... Thanks for sharing!
Excellent explanation, thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial
You're very welcome!
Very helpful! Dankeschön for sharing!
Thank you, helped a lot!
Great!
Cool is it better than the h5 I want one
Thank you for your help with this. I just got my Zoom H6 and feel like I can use it now. :)
Thank you for this! Easy to follow and understand, even at 1.5x speed :D
Is it hard to use
When I hit record while using the XL microphone, it says wait for signal or file. And doesn’t turn red to record. How can I fix?
Excellent!
Hi, I just watched your video, thank you very much. I was wondering if I can use a lavalier with the zoomH6. I usually make blog videos, I just moved to zoom h6 so Im looking for the best option for recording.
Thanks for watching! That totally depends on the lavalier. You'll need to know what kind of voltage the lav mic takes, so that you can plug it in without damaging it.
If it's typical +48v like phantom power, you can connect it using the 1/8" jack on that XY mic at the top of the H6.
If it's lower than 48, you'll need to A) get a 1/8" to XLR adapter (amzn.to/2YZvaO9) and B) change the voltage on the input you're using to match the lav mic (either 12 or 24) by going to Menu > Input & Output > Phantom > On (to turn it on) and also Voltage to set the correct voltage level. Good luck!
Stereo is not channels 1 and 2. It is the mixed result of all the inputs. You can control this in the virtual mixer interface. It's not the easiest thing to navigate but it's not impossible if you have a need to do so. Most podcasters would want multichannel by default but there are reasons to use the stereo mix.
Backup is very useful in that it records a backup file of the mix with a pad applied. This lets you have a way of recovering from clipping if you get over modulated without breaking out Izotope RX. This is not a bad thing to have on by default. Similar with the 24 bit recording options. This can help in post.
And of course note that the Zoom recorders cannot record and act as an interface at the same time. For that you need something like the more expensive SoundDevices MixPre line of recorders that has recently been released this year.
!
Thanks for the notes - I meant that it was a mix of the entire audible recording. In saying "Channel 1 & 2" I meant, your standard stereo mix, i.e. just a "Left-Right" or "Channel 1-2" output
what about the left and right when do you need to have those lit whats the difference
Best guide of Zoom H6 in CZcams
Thank you!~
Best And most thorough video !
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for making this. I am curious - if recording an interview with other people, do you recommend that they be wearing headphones to monitor the recording or just the podcast host? I've been wondering if I should get a splitter for the headphone jack. I'm guessing they will be curious how they are sounding? I don't know though!
Becca Hammond yes we always recommend headphones. But don’t get a splitter, get a headphone amp instead
You're definitely right about them headphones... I packed everything but the damn headphones. Lol
Excellent walk through, thanks.
Great explanation! I’d like to know if the compressor and high pass would work when used as an audio interface. Thanks
It should
Brilliant and simple walkthrough. Thank you very much. Which is the best mic attachment to use for a one-on-one interview? Say you were speaking to a football manager after the game. And also, do I need to adjust Lo Cut or Comp/Limiter to help reduce background noise? Cheers
I would definitely get two dynamic mics such as the SM58 - you'll always want one mic per sound source
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to connect the Ronalds CS-10EM binaural headphones. I placed the red 3.5 mm minijakc on the Y connector (2 normal output jacks) to record each channel separately and put the black on the headphones. In this way, I hear a background noise that increases when I increase the gain.
Phantom is connected and configured with 12 V because they are condenser microphones.
I do not know how to eliminate this noise. I need to record with these headphones.
Any information will be useful.
Thank you.
Connect CS10-EM straight to the 3.5mm jack located on the side of the x/y-microphone capsule and switch plugin power on in the menu system. You can see it in the menu system at about 6:10 of the video.
Thank you!
Of course!
Do you happen to know how I would able to connect my iPhone to play music/audio and record it directly to the memory card. while aslo using XLR mics for a podcast?
tedjonesworld you can plug in a normal AUX cord into the XY attachment. Or, you can plug a 1/8 to 1/4 into one of the 4 XLR inputs, but the 1/4” end of the connection MUST be mono. Or the Zoom won’t read it properly
Do i HAVE To use batteries when using this as an audio interface? I am using Logic Pro X on mac. If i use my computers USB for power, will there be a lag?
Me too.
Can an acoustic/electric guitar be plugged in directly via 1/4” phone plug, or is a preamp or direct box required?
The inputs are a combo mic/line in, so if you use the 1/4” there with a guitar you should be fine. Just turn on the pad
Thanks this was great! If you were doing a podcast with 4 mics (4 people) what do you suggest as the most efficient way to set them up with headphones? I was looking into using headsets for convenience purposes but not sure if I'd need another piece of equipment to make that work.
There's a really easy way to do that - get this adapter from Belkin, you can plug in up to 5 headphones! www.amazon.com/Belkin-RockStar-5-Jack-Headphone-Splitter/dp/B00904WS2K/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1518809828&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=belkin+headphone+splitter&psc=1
Podcast Masters OMG thanks so much for sharing this! I have been looking for something to help and as simple as this product is, its going to help me tremendously.
Do you need a sd card? Can I use this as normal mic as if you would with a blue yeti like plug it into my phone only?
you can run this as an audio interface into a DAW; I haven't tested this on an iPhone though
Do you know if you can record, and use the interface at the same time?
If you’re using it as an interface that means you’d be recording into whatever DAW you’re using. Not onto the H6
Just ordered the H6 Black. Have loved the h2n for many years and still plan to use it. What case are you using for the H6?
That’s the case that it comes with in the box 😎
can i ask a recording formate question
my zoom seem to create a new recording file n move it to a new folder each time
example i have 10 files in 10 different folder
how do i set it so all my files are in 1 folder
every time you hit record, it will create a new folder inside the project folder. That is by design.
Dealing With My Grief is correct, when you format the SD card the device will automatically create 10 project folders, then gradually save your new recordings into them
What if i wanted to hear the sound of the voice to test whether or not they are speaking loud enough? Or can that be done afterwards with the saved file?
Just plug in your headphones :)
Can you use it as an audio interface to PC and record a backup to the SD card at the time time?
Hi - no. You can't record anything when using it as an audio interface. You have to do it on your PC using a software. :)
The X Y pattern thing on top of the device, is it necessary? Why would i need that if i have external mics connected already? Thanks
If you’re using XLR mics for podcasting then you prob won’t need that XY mic at all
Is there any way possible that I can connect my phone to the H6 to accept phone calls during a recording of a podcast? Thanks from 3 Guys with Small Mics
Use a 1/8" male to 1/8" male cord and connect it to the line out! From there, you can assign the line out to a track. That, or you can use a 1/8" male to 1/4" male cord and plug the 1/4" into one of the 4 inputs. Hope this helps!
Excellent for recording. I got mine 4 yrs ago. Is there a way i can put a downloaded mp3s or wav files in one of the tracks so that I can play guitar and mp3 backing tracks at the same time?
For this you could use it as an interface with your computer, And record in GarageBand or similar
So there is no mic-in like for video mic ntg?
The 1/8" input is on the side of the XY mic - I may have skipped it in this video but there is a more current setup video here: czcams.com/video/CE4JP-6Tp4Q/video.html
Great run through. Thanks so much! Buying mine tomorrow in like-new condition for $150.00. So excited!
Thanks! Have fun with the new H6
thank you for this walk through! let's say i have four mics plugged in and ready to record, where would i plug in each of their headphones to the mics? (as mentioned around 11:50)...would i have to plug in each person's headphones and test them individually?
Queen Omi get an adapter /headphone splitter that can handle 4 mics 👍
Hi - get a headphone amplifier - like Microamp HA400 from Behringer - it's more reliable.
Do you have a way of plugging in 4 headphones for a podcast if so please let me know
Hi - you gotta get a headphone amplifier with 4 channels. :)
Does the SD card save multitracked files (WAV, etc.) or just a single file?
The SD card will indeed multitrack record for all the inputs that you are using
does the SD card comes with the device? if yes, how much is it its capacity?
Mine did come with one, but I can't guarantee that every h6 has an SD card in the box. I would normally go for a 32gb or 64gb from SanDisk
What is the mic you used with Track 4?
I can't remember, but either the SM58 or ATR-2100
For a podcast, which could give me better sound quality ZOOM H6 or interface type focustire or volt 2?
Depends on the interface, every interface has different internal preamps which have different native gain levels, so you might have cleaner or noisier inputs on an interface. Like I said they're all different, so you'd have to test them. The H6 is great because the inputs are very clean
Thanks man. If I set it up for battery use for power yet still have it plugged in, will it automatically feed off of plugged in power once the batteries die during recording?
Manna-hata Movies if it’s plugged in, it won’t use the battery at all. You’ll see the battery icon disappear once you plug it in
@@thepodcastmasters Thank you!
Hi!
Is it possible to separate headphone and line out?
So that for example inputs 1-2 goes to headphones only, and inputs 3-4 to line out only?
Thanks! :)
I don't believe so, no. What are you trying to accomplish specifically?
Hey, I've found out that this ain't possible, so I've got a Tascam 60D MK2 which has this ability. Thanks :)
Thanks for the video! At 8:07 time line, you say Rec Format quality standard is 44.1 @ 16 bit. Is this the ideal setting for recording voice for podcasting? Or is it also the ideal setting for all types of recordings as well?
It's the standard audio recording format. If you're recording along with video (or working with a videographer), that standard would be 48k at 32bit
The standard for podcasting by now is 48 kHz @ 24 Bit. This is what software like auphonic or other services work the best with. So if you have the possibility: Use this recording settings
Could you go into more detail of what the "Pad 0 to -20" actually does? I thought it gave a boost so that I wouldn't need a cloudlifter but from watching your video what I am understanding it is more of a limiter. Which if you have a hot microphone or instrument it limits it so it doesn't keep peaking. I just want to make sure I understand what the Pad does.
Brandon Krieger it’s the opposite of a boost basically, what you said is correct
What type of mic are you using to record this video with ?
atr-2100
when recording using two mics I get two wav files once uploaded to my mac, one I sound clear and the guest does not on the other wav file its reversed. What am I doing wrong?
one of your mic’s is incorrectly setup for the situation
Sounds like you're multitracking. One track per microphone.
do you know how to link two tracks?
push the two record-enable buttons at the same time
Great video!! Well explained. I just bought the H6. Seems easier to use than the Tascam. Is there a splitter you would recommend for 4 headsets? Thanks
the zoom is too expensive for me, is there an alternative to it? for podcasting with a 4 person set up
Nothing that I could personally recommend, sorry
I rented an H6 and the channels are matched up (1/2, 3/4) insted of being individual. I can't find anything on how to change it to operate each channel individually is there a setting in the Menu that i'm missing?
If you push both inputs 1-2 together, it will lock them as a pair. Simply push them both together again, and it will unlock them.
@@thepodcastmasters Thank you very much!
I'm looking to buy one just wondering, does it record as a multi track recording to the sd card or just as the interface?
Multitrack for both
@@thepodcastmasters thank you
i want a connect my phone into h6 what is that cable call ?
1/8” TRS to 1/4” TS - the 1/4” end HAS to be a TS (mono) to be picked up properly.
When doing a video podcast, do I need a separate SD card for audio and video?
yes the camera will need its own card
@@thepodcastmasters thanks
what about the left and right when do you need to have those lit whats the difference
That refers to the attachable mics on the top of the H6
@@thepodcastmasters so if I have a phantom mic connected just leave them off
@@SirBamBam404 If you don't have either of those mic attachments plugged in, the H6 won't even let you turn on the L/R record enable buttons. Phantom power is a totally different thing
Thank you for the help in setting up my H6. I just bough tit for my new podcast program, Civil Defense Radio, and didn't quite know how to set everything up. Your video was clear and concise so even a non-techy like me could understand. Thanks again.
Have you ever had an issue trying to use the H6 as an Audio Interface in Multi-Track mode? I tried to and Skype and my DAW Reaper saw it as an option but no sound came through.
Did you go to the zoom website and get the drivers downloaded?
@@beccahammond I was able to figure it out when it comes to Skype you need to be in Stereo Mix not Multi-track. The DAW the challenge is that I didn't know is the input in Reaper starts at 3,4,5,6 for the XLR inputs on 1,2 which I assumed it was.
Hi Does it Charge with it's own battery, or do you mean run off the power source thanks!
It doesn’t charge the batteries when plugged in via USB, it just acts as a power source, so the batteries aren’t needed
Podsense by Crate Media thanks for clarifying
@@thepodcastmasters thanks for clarifying, on the video, from the way you had worded it i had thought maybe it had a rechargable battery! which would have been sweet!
Great walkthrough, how does this compare to Olympus LS100 when podcasting?
What did you find was the best gain setting to use when using the xy mic
I get this question a lot - but I don't like providing you with a specific gain setting. Every situation is different so you'll need to take it case by case. As a guideline, keep an eye on the monitor control on the H6 and you'll want to keep your levels hitting about -10 for the majority of the time.
how good is the xy mic that comes with can I use just the xy mic for a good podcast or would I need to spend money on a xlr mic
You def want some XLR mics because the XY’s are condensers, and not ideal for vocal recording. They’re intended for room/concert recordings
@@AdamBuckmantechpad1642 I wouldn't use the xy for podcast. Use the mid-side if you must. Even better, use the shotgun. An XLR would be optimal, assuming its of a higher quality.
8:07 you should ALWAYS record with 48 kHz @ 24 Bit if you're recording a podcast. It's the best sound quality without creating extremely large raw footage, and every software and service like auphonic will work best with these settings. Also if you use StudioLink or however work with other podcasters, 48 kHz 24 Bit is the standard that the podcasting community mostly has a consent in.
I believe standard is still 44.1 @ 16 unless you're recording video, which is 48 @ 24
@@thepodcastmasters OK, then maybe standard isn't the right term, because different things have different standards. But 48 @ 24 is the setting that I would highly recommend, because you will have the least compatibility and desynchronization problems with all these different software and services. My recording software requires this setting, StudioLink uses it and if you want to merge recordings from different sources into one project, you can stay away from much trouble if settings are always the same. And the actual space you save isn't too much, especially nowadays where hard drive space is cheaper than ever.
Thanks! Great video.
I think "Back Up" is very important.
