AF-663: Darlene Gillespie | The Mickey Mouse Club, Part 4 | Ancestral Findings Podcast
ancestralfindings.com/darlene...
Darlene Gillespie is one of the original Mouseketeers on The Mickey Mouse Club. The most popular cast member in the first season, her popularity was usurped by Annette Funicello in the second season and after that. Darlene enjoyed a medical career before becoming a petty criminal and even spent some time in jail before retiring to a respectable life. This is Darlene Gillespie's intriguing tale.

Darlene was my favorite by far. She was always the most gorgeous girl on the show. There were other beauties but Darlene was my favorite.
I second that!
Mine to, she was a beauty
I was relieved to learn that she did not end up in adult films, as has happened with other child stars who fell on hard times.
Which ones? I’ve never heard of any who did adult films.
Disney tried to make her THE star of the show but the kids made Annette the star! Her distinctive beauty and warmth enchanted both boys and girls.
My crush back then was Karen Pendleton! She was only 2 years older than me!
Annette was so pretty, it’s so sad that she’s passed away
yeah I remember what enchanted me.
I watched the "Mickey Mouse Club" from 'day 1' in 1955, as a 9 year old & loved it! I even met one of the
"Mouseketeers" .i.e. Lonnie, ca. 1993! These young performers, as well as all 'early t.v.' actors, deserved to
get "royalties" from their performances that were broadcast 'ad infinitum'! Some of these "kids" have already
'passed away', but people my age will always remember them as the first "baby boomers" to be the stars, on t.v.!
Being poor and first generation I never liked it I thought it was really hokey
I loved the show! Our neighborhood was always quiet when it came on. Singing & dancing talents, adventures shown from around the world that I never knew about; continuing stories (Corky & White Shadow, Spin & Marty, Harty Boys, to name a few). It showed respect for one another for us to follow. I don't see this in present day for my grandkids to watch Ok, I will stop there. 😊
Darlene was wonderful in her Western show "Corky & White Shadow."
I loved her in that role! Seemed perfect for it!😊
Darlene was not a minor, petty criminal. At least two Federal charges. On a local shoplifting charge she got three years probation...that isn't minor either. She ran out of cute years ago.
Awesome..thanks for this update. So happy she's still active.
Darlene was always loved! Loved Annette too. This makes it sound like they were in competition. I suspect Darlene’s family life might have troubled Darlene more.
When Disney had class and decency
Are you saying Disney still doesn't have class and decency? Can you name a company that has more class and decency?
Thanks for your comment! The idea of class and decency in a company can mean different things to different people. Disney has certainly made a significant impact in the entertainment industry and has a dedicated fan base.
As for other companies with a reputation for class and decency, it often depends on what aspects you're looking at - ethical business practices, customer service, social responsibility, etc. Companies like Patagonia and LEGO are often praised for their commitment to social and environmental responsibility. Meanwhile, brands like Rolex or Tiffany & Co. are typically associated with class in terms of luxury and quality.
Ultimately, it comes down to individual perspectives and values. Each company has its strengths and areas where it could improve. It's great to have a discussion about these aspects, as it encourages companies to strive for better practices.
Darlene was my favorite Mouseketeer.
Why no mention of the series “Corky and White Shadow” which was part of the Mickey Mouse Club?
Darlene and Bobby Burgess were the most talented.
I'm glad Darlene got past her short-lived criminal troubles. She was a fantastic performer on The MM Club. Big talent❗💎❗
Thanks for your comment! I agree, Darlene Gillespie was really talented on The Mickey Mouse Club. It's good she overcame her troubles. She sure was a big talent!
I worked atMidway,airport,in Chicago,often saw Cubby O Brien,he was the drummer,for the Carpenters!
Darlene was always my favourite! As a young boy I had a serious crush on her!
Fascinating. Thank you.
Darlene’s sister Gina played the young Blanche Hudson (the Joan Crawford character) in “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” Off topic, I know. Just saying.
👍😊
One of the important details not mentioned is how Darlene and her father sabotaged her career with Disney by being too pushy, which was partly behind the promotion of Annette Funicello. These details have been documented in Paul Peterson's book, OF WALT, MICKEY, AND ME. It's apparent that there were issues about Darlene's history since the other Mouseketeers avoided talking about her.
Darlene Gillespie served time in prison.
"Yay Darlene, I also Like Ryan Gosling another Mouseketeer from Canada!"
Would it be too dramatic to call Darlene’s story a bit tragic?
No.

A tragedy of her own making.
Back in 1963 I was 9 years old and was quite unfamiliar with television. We moved into a tenement hostel and by word of mouth learned that the family a couple of doors away had a (very small black and white) TV. Kids just invited themselves and sat in front of the TV; about 2 feet away.
On the screen came some program with kids about my age and there was a very pretty girl with the name "Darlene" on her chest (they would call out their names when they were introduced). But I became mesmerised by this girl who was named Annette. She had such a lovely face, hair and eyes and I thought maybe she was about 12 so I was in with a chance.
How was I to know that at that moment she was all kissey kissey with Frankie Avalon?
At 9 years old I was always in the here and now and had no idea about TV repeats. I was just a kid from the bundu.
RIP Annette.
I was one of the 🐭 musketeers but I was banned for pulling Mickey's tail
I knew Sharon Baird years ago. Her parents and mine were great friends, our dads worked together. They lived a couple of blocks away. Sharon last worked, according to IMDB, in 2020.
I remember her on the Mouse Club!
Yeah, people cry when I sing in church.
For me,it was annette s dimples that i fell for ,i was about 8yrs old.but yes darlene was a darling.
I was always a Darlene fan
She was. My favorite mousketeer along with Karen Sharon Doreen
I live near Cubby and Tonya Harding unless they recently moved. I’ve seen Tonya but just read about Cubby living in the forests of Yacolt Washington.
All of my friends liked Annette but for me it was Darlene.
Don Grady’s picture was there too.
I Sincerely believe that I was named after Darlene. One thing I know is that the peeps who were 20+ 60 years ago were just as attached to the Mickey Mouse Club then as the 20+ peeps are today attached to The Voice, Dancing With The Stars... Kind of as you said with "the Mickey Mouse Club having more adult fans..."
I never missed an episode. If my girlfriends were visiting we watched it together and sang allll the songs...
My wife was named after Darlene too!
Are we sure it's some dark things about Walt Disney and the whole company
As a coming of age boy I just couldn’t understand why I liked her more than the others🫠
Thanks for listening and subscribing to the podcast... Keep up with all my postcard adventures here: ancestralfindings.com
She had an underground punk rocker hit called I Spy For Da FBI
No such club like that exists in Disney unless they're transgender
stick to the facts, not your terrible recall.
I hear ya
I didn't know Darlene was a Canadian.
Good for her...
let us hold our banner high or something like that!
Was I the only one who had a crush on her? Good video. Thanks for sharing.
No, I did too.
Me too..
I just hope most of them escaped the rampant secret paydohfeelya in showbiz, that still exists today, but is too ugly a truth for people to face
Including yourself, I see. The "bogeyman" won't get you if you spell "Pedophilia" correctly.
She would be 82
Darlene Gillespie is retired and living in Las Vegas.
Jimmie Dodd and Roy Williams were over-animated hams - and all I knew was, no MAN in my family acted like they did. Talk about light in the loafers!
Jimmie Dodd had been around a while. He was in the movie "Flying Tigers" with John Wayne and other Hollywood notables in 1942. Disney's productions always inspired with high spirits and energy which I'm sure was part of their desire to cultivate a following. I watched many episodes of MMC and only became aware of the kind of conditioning many years later.
Not much in the way of video, here. Won't Disney share?
Would be more interesting if you made it a slideshow, not just one picture for the whole video
Darlene seemed really fake to me. Annette was just... relaxed and casual.
It's funny, I heard a lot of Italian--Americans wrote (using non-Italian names) to 'praise' AF. Personally, I never liked AF and preferred DG to her but she wasn't my favorite.
Isn't a video channel supposed to tell a story visually instead of using a static poster?
Thanks for your feedback! You're absolutely right that video channels typically leverage dynamic visuals to tell a story. The choice of using a single slide in this case was a stylistic one, aiming to focus the viewer's attention on the narrative and audio elements. However, I appreciate your point and understand that incorporating more visual variety can enhance the viewing experience. Your input is valuable, and I'll definitely consider incorporating more dynamic visuals in future videos to better engage the audience. Thanks for watching and for your constructive comment!
She was also as I recall in Playboy!
No, she was not.
It was mouseketeer Doreen Tracey that had posed for Playboy.
@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc It wasn't Playboy, it was Gallery, twice, in 1976 and '79.
@@odysseusrex5908 You're right about Doreen posing for Gallery. I just looked it up. I also didn't know that she had passed away.
No she was not and that's how people's reputations are smeared thanks to people like you.
you dont trick people who expect a video presentation into a podcast! Dissappointed !
She wasn't likable to me as a kid. Cold and stuck up. Annette had a warmth that won people over.
Same with me. Maybe it was her name? DARLENE? I never cared for her.
Darlene Gillespie was supposed to be the next Judy Garland.
annette was a robotic simpleton and a terrible actress.
@@drats1279 ha ha. But likable. I guess you were in love with Doreen.
@@drats1279she couldn’t sing either but her prettiness and sweetness was probably what made her popular
Canadian. What did you expect?
Really you could not do better with the visuals.
No video? Just this narrator? What???
I hated that show when I was a kid.
I never liked her
no one cares
Annette Funicello's (RIP) instant fame was because she had little Hooters showing. Rumors also were whispered that she and Uncle Walt were more than what was considered less than an appropriate relationship between a young teen and an old man! Annettes' talents weren't anything greater than any other of the clubhouse members... it was just over-exposure of her Italian Face and her young curvy body caught the amorous attentions of young impressionable American Boys. Even though I was part of the generation that the Mickey Mouse Club Show was targeting - I found the whole premise idiotic and campy, therefore I never watched it.
Actually she had Personality to back up her Brains. She was a favorite.
I loved her
