  • 23-year referee Quentin Norman is mic’d up for this game as you go behind the scenes of what a referee does at a game.
    Start with the pre-game meeting with the referee team and captain’s meeting.
    Listen as the referee nearly admits that he might have made the wrong call, asks which defender wants credit for the foul and the banter between the coaches and referee.
    The game itself was a track meet at times prompting the referee to comment that they won’t have to worry about the shot clock tonight.
    The game came down to the last shot.
    San Ysidro, 10+ points
    Brandon Edwards, 17 points
    Francisco Zazueta, 12 points

    I like how he immediately identifies the shooter verbally on fouls. Far too often the shooter is not identified by the calling official and that can lead to issues if a team is trying to be sneaky. Overall a very proactive and good official. Mechanics weren't always perfect but he managed that game very nicely.

    Good calls at 13:35 and 16:10 (it was a hold).
    Missed the foul calls at 12:56 (should have been called a foul on number 22 with the body contact) and a missed "and one" at 16:04.

    Constructive Criticism:
    1Q: Talking to the cheerleaders on the side of the court with your back to ALL the action while the ball is in play? Your job is to call the game, not to worry about whether the cheerleaders are aware they can come onto the floor between quarters. Officials don’t need to be talking to the cheerleaders at all; especially at the high school level.
    Also early in the game, telling player, “Don’t run through screens like that!” Based on your words, that was a foul, but you didn’t call it.
    Between quarters, loudly, and with big gestures, telling your partner on how he can improve. You’re making him look inferior, which he is not. He’s doing fine. Stop big-dogging and give him the respect he deserves. Don’t know if you’re doing it for the camera, but whatever the reason, stop it.
    2Q: Calling a foul and then asking two players which one wants the foul, because you got them both. The operative words here are YOU GOT THEM. So YOU make the call who gets the foul. If one player is their best player and he actually deserves the foul, but is in foul trouble, you unfairly influenced the game by allowing the star player to get out of a foul that he committed. You blow the whistle. You make the call. That’s YOUR job. Players should NEVER get to decide who gets the foul.
    Q3: You’re the trail way back at mid court and you call a foul all the across court on a play right in front of the lead. You’re reaching to make that call. Stay in your area.
    Late in the game: again talking to and flirting with cheerleaders. Again...WHILE THE BALL IS IN PLAY. Those are high school girls. I understand this is California, but leave the girls alone and call the game. And stop with the little dance moves; it’s unprofessional.
    4Q: Counting aloud on a closely guarded player? You don’t count aloud. That’s the same as counting 3 seconds in the lane: it’s a silent count. By counting loudly so the offensive player can hear how close he is to committing a 5-second turnover, you’re penalizing the defense. If I was the coach, I would have let you have over that.
    These are just observations from a longtime official at the high school and collegiate level. We call 3-man; can’t recall the last time I was on a 2-man crew.

    • @zgaviation6481
      @zgaviation6481 Před 2 lety +1

      I agree with most of these. However, I didn't see him talking to the cheerleaders during a live ball near the end of the game. The gestures between quarters are bad optics, so are the dance moves. In regards to asking what player wants the foul, I've heard this done by college and NBA officials, so I have no problem with that. On the Q3 play in the line, yes, he's far away, but I assume he has a good look on this play, at least he should if he's positioned correctly. While I would expect a cadence whistle on this play, I have no issue with him coming in to grab this foul. Great catch on the counting of closely guarded. I've watched this video numerous times and was always trying to figure out what he was counting there. I agree that is very unusual and certainly a silent count is what should be used there.

      Lorenzo Valdez hit mechanics seem to very depending on the official. Not a huge deal, as his mechanic clearly shows the type of foul. I don't see anything wrong with telling a coach you wish you had another look at a play. Not every time of course, but it reminds the coach that you're human too and may have missed something, and that you are doing everything you can to call it right.

    • @tonyc7301
      @tonyc7301 Před 6 lety +9

      Absolutely right Nick. By admitting that maybe you didn't have the best look at a play you are at least being human, and the coach will likely give you a lot less crap the rest of the game. Obviously you don't want to tell the coach that several times per game, but one time is fine and depending on the game, even two if you have a good relationship with the coach.
