It kills me that straight men still don't get this. Rachel made a great point when they brought up emcees that women have to do that all. the. time. Non-binary AFAB person here and that's double the reason to read everyone in the room right away and match the room's energy in order to stay safe. It's exhausting. There's a reason I love being the last one awake at night because that means the only living beings around who are conscious and looking at me are the cats.
I have the EXACT same problem with sleep. I cannot, at ALL sleep and feel safe if someone else is awake in my vicinity. 100% illogical, because of course they're my loved ones, but the fear remains. Hypervigilance.

@@margauxf4321 that's actually a more dangerous situation then a dark ally at 3am. 80% of sexual assaults happen in the victims home and by someone the victim loves and trusts. Home is the most dangerous place for a woman.
I'm a (mostly cis) woman, and I feel safe in most rooms.

This was one of those realization moments like Keith had with Zach regarding how much pain he felt constantly. I appreciate the humble that happened here. It's a hard truth to hear. In an ideal world women and girls would be free to wear leggings and tank tops without being a "distraction" and could go to any place and not feel unsafe or threatened. But the reality as it stands isn't that. And when it's really shoved up front like this it can be quite jarring but also incredibly powerful because it spreads a knowledge towards people that don't have it. I was really glad for this moment and I was really glad for the way it seemed to leave an impression on Kwesi and likely others as well.

@@lakedavies2298 it was the one where Zach tested out Amazon products advertising as pain relief tools. There was one that was like a prickly mat that you lay on to alleviate back pain and Zach used it and it felt nice to him and Kieth tried it like Zach and when he got up again he asked Zach something along the lines of "wow and your pain is worse than this?" And Zach was just like yep to which it seemed to kinda blow Keith's mind. It was a good episode actually. I enjoyed it a great deal in particular that part. Chronic pain sucks and when you have pain every day with some days being just really bad... it's so relatable. People who don't suffer that kind of constant pain don't really get it until they can have an experience like what they had in the video to where it can be presented tangibly. The same happened here with kwesi. It was presented in a tangible form that he could identify with in some way.
I think it’s something that most cis men don’t really think about, because quite frankly they don’t have to. It’s really heartwarming to see the lightbulb when cis guys have that realization tho, because it means going forward they’re going to try to do their part in making the women around them feel safe. Like my husband for example: when he’s out in the world alone, he makes a conscious effort to not follow any woman too closely and even crosses the street to create space between them so that he doesn’t chance making her feel unsafe in his presence. And it makes me love him so much more knowing he’s listened to my fears as a woman as is using that knowledge to help other women he encounters in his life.
It’s not fair that i feel like i have to intentionally dress as slovenly as possible to be left alone in public when I’m by myself, but it’s an unfortunate reality. I just had my reasoning for doing this reinforced literally two days ago when i went into the gas station to grab a drink after dropping my husband off at work and had this man that looked old enough to be my father follow me around the gas station then eventually tell me how “sweet” i looked before asking if an attractive girl like me was traveling alone this late at night🤢 i obviously lied and said my husband was in the car because my alarm bells were dinging frantically, but this is shit women have to deal with on literally a daily basis. It was honestly heartbreaking because i felt so cute that day, but that interaction made me feel dirty and gross. Guess its back to sweatpants, messy buns, and no makeup again😞
@@tinyfroghag what I love most about these lightbulb moments is that it really shows humanity as it is. We don't know everything from every perspective. But we can have a moment in which we can find an explanation that allows us to relate or identify with others perspectives and experiences. We all have these moments and we really ought to embrace them because these are the moments that make us better human beings towards other human beings.
A good example for me is the BLM movement. I'm a pacifist by choice. I value life in all of its forms and describe it as something that is sacred and should be treated as such. While I choose to be a pacifist I'm also aware that defense is sometimes necessary. As they say do no harm, but take no shit. That said when the black lives matter movement began back in 2016 I couldn't wrap my head around it. I was very much in the parade of all lives matter. And while my intentions weren't to be harmful sometimes the things we do with the best of intentions can lead to the worst of harms. In 2020 I saw a comic strip that used an analogy to explain black lives matter, and all of a sudden it clicked for me. It was presented in a way I could identify with and as a result I've since switched my rhetoric.
We all do things in ignorance and lack of understanding. It is one of the key factors that make us all human. And it is those lightbulb moments of real understanding and realization that help forge better paths for us all. You don't have to be "woke" to advance. You just have to be willing to learn better.
Yes and it’s also important to be intersectional with this conversation. A white woman will have more safe spaces available to them than a black trans woman. 💗💗💗💗💗

I love how much Kwesi was genuinely listening to what Mayhem and Arisce had to say, and seemed to be truly understanding because he could relate it back to black culture. Queer people and black people have really been through many of the same struggles, and I love that he recognised that and was attentive and accepting of these two queens.
Srsly, Kwesi is such a role model for being open, listening, respecting. He's such a cool guy.
When he asked "wait, do women not feel safe in any room they enter?" I almost shed a tear. He really just wants to learn and understand. Courtney is a very lucky (and I'm sure deserving) woman.
One thing I really love about RuPaul is that she basically has inside jokes with herself. "She done already done had herses" was an obscure memory she had of a fastfood employee telling her coworker that someone trying to claim food had already received their order. From DECADES ago lol

im a guy, but ive grown up with many girl friends.. I grew up with a mother who was very open. I have a sister. I am in no way oblivious to what women go through. it pains me so much. My entire life I try my best to be a safe space for women, a place where it doesnt matter that shes a women. I want a world where women (and anyone really) feels safe at all times. I do my best to be the change I want to see.
I cant tell you how happy I was when some of my girl friends have said they feel comfortable and open with me. Its all I want :')

Oh I find her endlessly fascinating. She has had an eventful life, to say the least. From being a breast cancer survivor to being Miss Vermont (and being one of the few to publicly defend marriage equality and gay rights on reality tv) to producing some big stuff in hollywood on top of being a mom to two beautiful twin girls. She’s pretty awesome.

Arisce speaking on how young gays often treat their elders hit me so hard. the one gay bar where i live has been closed for 2 years.. it meant so much to me to sit and learn our local queer history from those lovely people, and thank them for everything they have done. i hope they're ok, and may we meet again ♥ to any elder gays reading: i love you, miss you and am eternally grateful!
To be honest, us old folk have love for our younger queerio kids too! We’re proud of how much you genuinely care about things being fair. How you fight hard for what you believe in. How you’re all so innovative and smart and creative. It truly humbles me to know that the work I’ve done as an angry gay guy in the early 2000s is paying off in a world that’s more comfortable for all of us. We still have a ton of work ahead of us, but I’m so proud to know that the next generation is ready, willing, and excited to take it on!

I grew up with two moms, I'm bi myself, to put it in blunt terms I hit every branch of intersectionality save for being cis. My godfather is a drag queen, I have more uncles and aunts than I can count who tick basically every possible box on the gender binary. So as someone who was literally raised to view queer culture as the norm, who had to realize that straight people existed, I just wanted to say that even in the twenty years I've been alive the fact that we can sit and have these conversations on youtube now, and half a million people will watch it in a day, that's bigger steps than I think any of us could possibly imagine when I was a baby and that's simply incredible.

After listening again, and hearing her say when a woman walks into a room she looks and evaluates how safe she will be. After thinking about it now I realize she is right. I subconsciously do it. Most males will never know the feeling of having to be on guard all the time. Walking down the street alone, wondering if the footsteps approaching indicate danger, do you turn around, do you just run, are you holding your keys between your fingers/do you have your finger on the pepper stray nozzle. If you are at a club or at a party, do you have 100% control over your drink at all times, you turned away from it, did someone put something in it. You accidently make eye-contact with a stranger at the market/on the bus, now they are following you around/try to sit with to you because they think the eye-contact = flirting. Getting off an elevator on the wrong floor because the only other person on the elevator keeps staring at you or keeps sliding closer to you.
As a child it is drilled into girls to always be vigilant, know your surrounds, be on guard at all times because you never know when someone is going to try to hurt you.
I don't get this. Women are the safest demographic.... and it's by a lot.
The difference, women FEEL less safe, but men ARE less safe.

The feminism movement is for everyone, meaning that anyone who knows a woman, came from a woman, loves a woman etc will all benefit from women's rights. It's about being equal, not above. Not saying this is you, if indeed you are a man, just saying that women's rights equates to rights across the board for everyone.

absolutely! i dont even know how to explain it this just feels like home. being a young NB bisexual person this video has helped me so much in the last 6 months. it helped me not only face my gender identity but feel proud of it and the history associated with the LGBTQ community .

In all seriousness, I love that they also discussed queer history. A lot of people still don’t understand the struggles of queer people. Things that happen in the 70s, 80s, 90s, etc, still happen in many places around the world. There have been changes in recent years but we still have a long way to go from reaching true equality between the wide spectrum of all genders. Thank you for using your platform to educate 💖🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

I could have phrased it better, but my question stands: when we glorify exaggeration what space do we have left? I think everyone would have an issue with RuPaul's minstrel show if we replaced femininity with blackness.

The amount of effort Eugene consistently puts into endorsing queer culture and educating his audience about it is so admirable. This video was bone of my faves till date!
I adore everything about this video, but can we take a moment to acknowledge Miles? I can't believe I'm about to praise a straight white man in a video about Ru Paul and drag, but the way that he shut up, sat back, listened, and took in everything that was said - THAT is what we need from white straight men. There are times we don't need to hear from you, we need you to *hear* us.

@@nahicorua I don't think it's back handed at all. It's blunt but correct. Everyone gets to have their own opinions, but in the conversations about queerness and in queer spaces more straight/cis people need to learn to listen more than they speak.

I don’t think you guys can even understand how profoundly grateful to you guys. When my mom went to pride parades when she was a teen she was breaking the law. But I go and there are families everywhere now. This video made me cry. So thank you.
Even in 2015, in IOWA, I went to our Pride celebration, and there were drag queens putting on a show in the Ped Mall, and there were small children dancing with them. It was so enchanting.

So many straight men aren’t aware of what we go through. As soon as we enter a room, our guards have to be up, we have to cautiously look at the environment & look for potential threats.
My husband didn’t know either. Ive explained it and so has his female friends but seeing more stories on CZcams and Instagram has really started to drive it home for him.

I loved that you mentioned a lot of straight women go to the gay bars. I graduated high school in 2006. About 80% of the time when I would go to Nashville I would go to the bar Play because I felt safe there. Didn’t have to worry about handys men and could Dance all night with my friends without a hard on behind me.
I was surprised when I heard that from some of my straighter-than-ruler girl friends, but the realization "oh right, there's barely any straight man there!" came in in a split of a second, like, it's just so logical. Also great dance music. And bartenders who can mix drinks, not just serve beer. And if you do meet a straight man in such setting, there's like no chance he's a bigoted meninist. Win-win for everyone ^^

I'm a 37 year old straight guy who has watched every episode of drag race US, All Stars, UK, Holland and Canada. What the queen's do on the daily or on the show is amazing! The respect level I have for all drag Queens has never been higher and I would love to thank them all for their efforts in showing the art of drag for what it is an ART!.
Kwesi had me tearing up, he was so attentive and feeling the similarities and roots of it all. Now that is a damn good human being.

Rachel's last question is an important one because it brings to the table something that's very important. The younger generation is beyond fortunate that they are being brought up in a more "socially" accepting world (politically it's still a mess). That is something a lot of us did not have. We didn't have safe spaces. Safe conversations. We have to be careful and protect our safe spaces. Protect our LGBTQ+ youth at all costs. And LGBTQ + youths will have to responsibility to continue the work to move us forward without holding on to resentments for the things their LGBTQ+ youth will have that they didn't have. The same way we shouldn't hold resentment for the things that LGBTQ+ youth have today that we didn't have. We should be proud that we fought, endured, persevered, and survived so that they didn't have to go through what we did. So that they can have fulfilling lives without having to endure the traumas that we did. Don't hold resentment for what we didn't have that they do, be proud that we helped forged the spaces that they can enjoy and thrive in now.
As a trans person, I really appreciate them discussing how trans people and drag performers can often face push back within the LGBTQ community, it seems to be something that people outside of that community don't always know. I love this video by the way, I want to see more Drunk Gays Gasyplain!
Especially when RuPaul said “You can identify as a woman and say you’re transitioning, but it changes once you start changing your body.” I rather support the drag queens and kings that perform locally than the show because of him.

I agree with your decision to prefer supporting your local drag queens and kings, and honestly am kind of the fence about watching the show because without knowing a lot about it it seems like just showing the glam side of things and making cishet people love that without being aware of the reality/want to glom onto exclusively the good elements as a trend similar to the metrosexual fad years ago. If I do decide to watch the show, it's going to be a case of divorcing the author from the product in order to enjoy it. (And I would prefer to support local drag performers, but living in a poorer area of the Midwest without regular transportation, I can't :( )

I think there really needs to be more discussion about this both within the queer community and outside. As the LGBTQ+ community grows and some identites become more accepted there seems to be more push back on those of us who are less mainstream and less "normal" from within our own community and it is so harmful for all of us. We get nowhere by infighting and trying to tell other queer people that their queerness is less than. I really hope we see that conversation grow. Like Arisce said "If your feminism doesn't include everyone, it's not feminism."

I'm so happy that not only were they explaining lgbt+ culture while being lgbt+ themselves, but that they are also POC. They can show how the vocab evolved and how it travelled between minorities the become a mainstream slang. It's fun to say fun words but as a white cis woman I need to pay respect to where it came from or I'm just part of the problem.
Acknowledging where the words came from is so important, thank you for doing that !

I just love how "loving" the atmosphere is among the people in this episode. transgender, gay, cismen, and ciswoman, white, black, asian, all of them were really open to the discussion, respectful of the opinion of each other and very supportive of one another. I️ genuinely feel so lucky to have lesbian parents who took me and my friends to any events I️ was interested in. In my teens, I️ spent every birthday with my moms and my friends at Drag Bingo. If you’ve never been, it’s winning money and a goddamn party.
I️’m bi, and actually met my first boyfriend because we were at Drag Bingo and both of our birthdays were the same, he had two dads and when he turned 16 he decided to try drag, a completely straight guy, and KILLED it. When we hugged he slipped me his number and we dated for two and a half years, him doing drag and me going to EVERY show until I️ had to move.
Raise your children free of hatred and amongst people with different mindsets as GUIDES rather than competition or something to be “changed.” and you’ll raise open minded children.

There are a lot of things POC, lgbtq+, and women have in common that I think we often forget that this reminded me of. As a gay person, I also have to quickly assess the room before I can determine whether I’m safe or not, which is something I knew women do as well but didn’t think of much. Another is the feeling of being the “other” that POC have felt. Love this video

Yes but there are still intersectional things that still in a way has its own advantages/disadvantages. Yes minority groups do have many things in common. But a white gay male and a POC gay male, do not experience the same reaction. A white gay male deals with more of obnoxious societal views on masculinity, while a POC will face the similar societal views and nuances of being a person of color.

I have wanted to be a drag queen for probably about 5 years. I wanted to be a drag queen for Halloween as a 15 year old, and my mom told me no because it was dangerous. I live in a very Republican neighborhood in Ohio, but I was✨not deterred✨. 4 years later, this past Halloween, I went as DRAG-cula (drag queen Dracula). As a black biological female, I just want to empower and help people. I just want to say thank you. Seeing this wide variety of people who are comfortable and confident in their skin. One day I will be there. Until then, I can watch drag queens, the Try Guys, and Tyler Oakley. Thank you. All of you.

I've been rewatching a whole bunch of try guys videos recently, trying to find new videos to replace other ones as comfort videos. This one is absolutely taking the top spot. I actually have never watched it, and I'm so glad I found it now. This is the stuff I want to see - education and human moments - learning about other peoples lived experiences, especially when they're different from your own. Videos like this one is the whole reason I started watching The Try Guys in the first place. It's nice to be reminded of just how awesome they are.
This is a completely different energy from the Paw Patrol video and I’m here for it. Any more “drunk explain” videos need to have this as the blueprint.

As a gay woman I’ve never watched RuPaul’s drag shows. I appreciate and love how much it is part of gay culture, but it’s never been my thing and that’s completely fine. Some of my straight friends who have watched the show wonder why I haven’t because I’m gay, but it’s just not my thing. However I support the art of it all and love all the queens that I’ve come to stumble upon.
Just curious, do they only watch the U.S. version, or do they watch the several other international franchises?
This is something I've wondered. Do gay women feel slighted that the misogynist mainstream has only really seemed to accept gay male culture? Is there even a desire for more equal representation? The L Word exists, but I would wager that far more people know of Queer Eye, Will & Grace, and RPDR (of course) than anything primarily featuring lesbians, especially now that Ellen has been "cancelled."

I love how informative and welcoming this was, except for one thing: can we, as drag queens, PLEASE retire the "sister dick will make you sick" adage? There's so much weird internalized baggage involved in it. Why are we claiming we as drag performers shouldn't love one another? Why are we demonizing people within the community that love and date other queens? It has never made sense to me, and I'd love to understand why so many other drag performers, specifically queens, continue saying this. It feels like there's that internalized misogyny involved of "oh, I could never date a man who dresses up in drag" when that's exactly what people say to us daily

One of the greatest moments of my life was getting my super conservative mom to watch an episode. Her: "so, these are...men...dressed up...as...women?" Me: "...for the 5th time, yes." She was so confused and bible panicked into wondering if I was somehow a lesbian and coming out to her (I wasn't and I'm not). L-O-friggin' L. It was a grand old time. I really like that maybe the latter half of my generation and certainly the ones behind that can watch a show like this and just watch it because it's entertaining and not focus on it being "a gay thing," or something worse in their minds. I started watching because I love make-up and hair and fashion, and creative souls and this was all of that and more. I may not convert my mom to a fan, but she at least had the experience and can form an opinion on it from a place of some knowledge, and maybe not be so uptight when someone mentions drag in an actual sentence.

I would love to see a "Re-Try" series where y'all revisit past experiences purely so Kwesi could try drag. Based on what he talked about in this video, I feel like he would have a really interesting and unique perspective. Plus I'm sure Zach and Keith would love to give it another go, or maybe other Second Try members would want to participate!
