What You Don't Know About Drew Brees Quarterback Controversy With Philip Rivers

  • Drew Brees started his career in San Diego in 2001 when he was a backup to Doug Flutie. After succeeding Flutie, Brees became the starting quarterback but only a couple seasons later, the Chargers drafted Philip Rivers who would compete with the Brees for the starting position. However a shoulder injury would put Drew's career in jeopardy and ultimately led him to New Orleans to join the Saints.

I have no doubt that, following a 15-1 season that ended badly, Dean Spanos would have fired Cowher and replaced him with Norv Turner or someone else who had no business being a head coach. Especially since that was Cowher's fourth AFC Championship game loss at home. That's the difference between stable and unstable ownership. As a Saint's and BIG Drew Bees fan..I hate to say this but only because we aquired the greatest QB in history in my opinion. I'm glad for your injury but better yet your recovery Drew. Sorry for your pain but if it wasn't for your injury, we probably wouldn't have won the SB. I had been a Saints fan from the beginning....Billy Kilmer, John Gilliam, Steve Stonebreaker, Jim Taylor, Dave Wetzel, Danny Abromowitz, Charlie Derkie who was kicker before Demsey...I can go on and on about my devotion to this very loosing team that I stood by with enthusiamsm for all of these years. Then 20 years later, we weren't the "aints" anymore. We finally got into the playoffs but did nothing after. Then we got to the playoffs with a one game win...THEN FINALLY, a little more than another 20 years...AHHH! SB CHAMPS! Sorry Drew if I seem insensitive to your injury but I think without it/you, the Saints would still be in the SB hunt. Thus we could expect more that we would win instead of loose with Drew and Sean. KUDOS TO SEAN PAYTON AS WELL!!!! A great coach. And so deserving because he can take a team and build it into a playoff caliber team in a season. ie, made it in first season as head coach.

    • @calebashford1686

Brees didn't throw temper tantrums or roll his eyes after a int. I seen him mad one time at Jeremy Shockey for blowing his cover and the two went on to pass for a touchdown in a super bowl. Manning and Brady have so much film of their emotions, and to be fair, it's understandable to get upset sometimes, but Brees read the same body language every down. "Going to move these damn chains to that endzone and get 6". No matter the situation. As emotional as it is to play football as a QB, to remain zoned in and stay professional is impressive.

Marty was a great coach. I'm a Chiefs fan from a boy that seen them win in 1969 SB. He came to KC and made us a winning team but just couldn't get us to the big dance. He was good for football and for me as a fan.

AJ Smith had an ego that lead him to believe that there wasn't any football knowledge Marty F'n Shottenheimer could offer him!?!? The guy was in the trenches his whole life, made the BROWNS a winner, but AJ Smith had no use for him? Say what you want about what the Mannings did, but Eli got to chips and didn't have to deal with that turd.

As a Chargers fan! I’m proud that both Brees & Rivers played for my team. In the 2006, when Rivers 1st year as a starter. Some or a lot of Chargers fans that year believe that Rivers is much better then Brees. Then when u looked at both of their entired career. Brees stats ended better then Rivers. I like them both the same.

Great deep dive on this! It’s crazy how one hit can change an NFL career and a teams trajectory. Bledsoe takes that hit and Brady takes over and the Pats Dynasty begins. Brees takes this hit, which send him to the Saints and they win a Super Bowl. Wild.

Your the first person that I know that has told this story with a happy ending. There is a couple of things that where left out like, Rivers acting like T.O in the the locker room and toward the the media. Jumping from team to team, never finding success and letting a true quarterback leave. Other than that your documentary was pretty good. A thumbs up from me and I also subscribe. Ty!

Chargers made the right decision. Rivers is amazing. I'm glad Drew found some success as a Saint because New Orleans really needed that Superbowl after that hurricane. But the Chargers got some extra help from the Eli Manning trade. It was a win win. Drew couldn't do anything for the Chargers.

A note on those play-off losses:
    1. The first loss against the Pats, the team had a complete breakdown in the 4th quarter to lose the game. 2 game ending turnovers were given back for free: 1 called back because our CB taunted, other called back because Marlon McCree tried to be a hero and got stripped after intercepting brady. Then our kicker missed a 52 yard field goal to send it to OT. Also, we fumbled a punt, and dropped a pick in the 1st quarter.
    2. They weren't just "injured", they each basically all had season ending injuries but kept playing anyway. Merrimen was also injured, Titans basically cheap shotted the entire team. Rivers played the game on a torn ACL, LT didn't just have a bruised knee, he had the same injury that sidelined AP for 5 weeks.
Overall though, you really nailed it. I can say as a former die hard chargers fan that fans generally sided with Marty and it was well known that AJ was not great to work with. So happy Brees got to win the big one, always liked him, he was adored in SD. Wish Rivers could have won one. He was good enough. Any chargers fan can you tell you though, in that era, no one knew how to lose like the chargers. They knew how to play just well enough to get you invested in the outcome of the game, and then found the most agonizing way to lose. They'd make a miraculous 4th quarter drive and then fumble on the 10 yard line. I'm sure every team has their stories though.
