    I've seen and reviewed Mary Beard's documentaries repeatedly, dozens of times, and documentaries by her colleagues, and I am still captivated by the presentations.

    Mary, I'm a fan for life thanks to your coverage of this episode!! You aren't afraid to be totally honest about the archeological findings that others are too prudish to show and yet you explain and display that information professionally and maturely, which makes it a fun learning experience. If I weren't a 50 yr old American grandma I'd take your classes in a heartbeat as I've always wanted to be an archeologist! But then again, Jeanine Davis-Kimball started over at age 55 and changed history by discovering proof of Amazons in the Steppes so maybe it's never too late?! Lol!! Thank you again, tho, Mary, for being a joy to watch and for teaching me so much!!

      The title is named what was life like in ancient Pompeii. The name of the channel is named Real History. I'm an electrician by trade would you like me to lie to you about my capabilities?I love History of all era's and enjoy learning. I find it very interesting and entertaining. I don't like being deceived. I also think your question is very sarcastic. If it is not intended to be please except my apologies. If it was then explain why you would expect less than what the title of the channel and the name of the program suggests.

    • @achair7265
      @achair7265 Před rokem +3

      That's because the word corn was once used for all grains. 🌽 was either called the word we know maize or simply indian corn. Since she is British the dialect makes sense.

    • @lperea21

      Roman soldiers ate dried ground maize. Not the same as corn, though

    • @FYCH45
      @FYCH45 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@lperea21 Roman soldiers would have eaten corn - in the British sense of the term, which means all types of cereal, including wheat, barley, oats, rye etc. They would not have eaten maize, as that was confined to the Americas until Europeans contacted the New World in the 15th and 16th centuries.

    Pompeii was Sodom and Gomorrah 2.0 that is why the judgment of God fell upon them too in a similar fashion.

      If you think Pompeii was “Sodom and Gomorrah,” what would you call Las Vegas? High-rollers betting thousands on Blackjack while Wall Street brokers enjoy orgies and snort coke off hookers asses…Why hasn’t Vegas been struck by a comet or a hurricane? Or Los Angeles during the Crack Era? San Francisco and the scourge of AIDS; NYC during the Cosa Nostra years; Berlin Circa 1930, when young boys were swapped as the champagne flowed…Pompeii pales in comparison to our ‘Modern’ West.

    I actually have to agree, Especially about her interpretation of the illustrations on the walls of the brothel. Opinion is one thing but saying what the tour guides are telling the tourist is" rubbish" is more than a little narcissistic... So-called specialists in certain fields of study are a little too self-imposing when it comes to their interpretations for me.. I like to let the facts speak for themselves, And the rest I leave to mystery.

    That said... 😅 I do have a question, Ms. Mary, about your conclusions of the numbering system for the bath house: If the numbers weren't in reference to the pictures then why use those particular pictures when they could've had just as much humorous effect using animals (not in a sexual way, just being goofy), or humorous day to day experiences, like kids playing tag and maybe one tags an adult shopkeeper by accident who is so started they drop their bushel of pomegranates, or something, and the kids then grab them and run away... Just as an example, of course. Lol! So, I'd have to conclude that the numbering system was more like a menu and the building was probably an upper class bath-house/brothel (if 'upper class' can be associated with such a grotesque thing, but that's life.)
    Thoughts? Opinions?

    Made it half through before I couldn't take any more of Mary Beard's abhorrent comments towards the sex worker way of life. Just my opinion, take it or leave it, but I'd much rather hear about fact and archaeology than listen to an older out of touch with reality woman's opinions about brothels in the 1st century AD that she has no justification in making and just spouts her own distaste of anything other than your basic hetero normative relations and view of sexuality.

      While sex work is valid and can be empowering, you have to think that in Ancient Roman societies, most sex workers were slaves. It wasn't a choice. It wasn't glamorous.
