That green text about pirating a game so many times the company goes bankrupt, buying the company, and then turning around and deleting all the pirated copies to become a billionaire has never been more back.

Holy fuck I need to install that game before it costs the devs money
I read this obnoxiously dry book called "surveillance capitalism" that described a "dispossession cycle" that companies employ to disempower consumers.
They launch services that virtually everyone has a problem with, then the roll the unpopular stuff back. "Sorry, we didn't know this would upset you guys so badly. We want our services to be enjoyed by everyone the way they want to enjoy them, so we're launching the classic version of our software along with the new intrusive version, so consumers can choose what they desire."
Finally, a couple of years later they piece meal roll out about 75% of what everyone hated with their god awful initial announcement, which was always the plan...
Even if Unity is going to roll everything back, it's cooked. It takes like 5 years to get competent in that engine. If you've put in fewer than that, you should jump ship and go to Unreal. The service model will eventually get even worse for Unity.
Software as a service model has swept through videogames like a scourge. It's sad that we're probably losing the biggest free open engine.
Thank you jenispizz2556 for the easily digestible summary and application of conceptual knowledge regarding malicious business tactics to current events
Or Godot so Epic can't do the same thing or similar
@@Ztaticifywell Godot is a little different... You'd need to also pay a publisher to port your game to every system one at a time by hand which is a high cost in its own right. If you're just making 2D PC games it's alright tho. And they're working on making 3D a little less bad so maybe some day it could be used for those without excruciating development pain

Very important subject. Major game engine company trying to screw over many independent developers using their tools, being teached for sometimes decades to use solely their tools and now they will get screwed over and will obviously struggle financialy, out of knowhere basically. Hell, they even plan as of now to charge people who released their games up to 2 years ago. Yeah. Soon a big bill might come and Unity obviously lies when they say they have tools to detect which copy of the game is pirated or not or was installed twice already or not, or on the other device. They dont have these tools and will charge per each sold copy multiple times.
For the record for 99% of developers it's not going to matter. It's only on games sold after 200k USD which is out of reach for almost every indie dev. What it really hurts is AA and AAA developers, and AAA can tank the blow but a lot of AA can't.
Let's say they can track unique users. Wouldn't that violate European privacy laws?
@@Squidmoto3That doesn't matter though, the fact it's happening in the first place is a big violation of trust and generally scummy, even if it doesn't affect us indie devs directly.

People in the comments thinking this is a smart business move when every single company, enity, person of influence and people of reasonable sense disagree is crazy. Look having companies using your service be willing to drop it INSTANTLY is not a
good business move, maybe it didn't go down the way you or they thought, but either way it doesn't matter, reality does, reality is every game company drops it instead of paying loads. Or even anything.
If everyone is dropping unity for this they were getting dropped no matter how they tried to monetize. Unity was fucked from the start.

SAP is made in Unity 😬
If the CEO preemptively dumped Unity stocks before the news broke because he knew it would wreck the company, this is probably the closest thing to a deliberate sabotage of the whole gaming industry in recent memory. Dude just burned the building down as he jumped out the window.
CEOs are insiders, meaning they can't sell until 3 months after they declare they want to sell. 2000 shares is pennies for a CEO's position in a company and was probably part of a scheduled sell
@@GettNumber Yeah like NL said it's probably just pocket lints to the CEO. Real unfortunate timing then.
He sold less than 0.1% of his shares in a scheduled transaction.. people are blowing this way out of proportion. Execs get paid mostly in stock, they sell periodically to get some actual cash. You think he sold 0.1% then deliberately tanked the remaining 99.9% of his holdings?
Unity has never made a profit. In the last few years they took out $3 billion in debt, but now interest rates are up. They're desperately trying to find some way to make money.
Okay, here's my question, what incentive at all would the CEO have to dump his own stock before an announcement that would tank the stock? If you knew the move would tank the stock, you probably wouldn't do it in the first place considering the way publicly traded companies operate is to put shareholder value first
@@justanotherwitposter1875You're never going to believe this, but this is a termed phenomenon known as "insider trading". Not what happened here, but still.
Northernlion mowed so Jeff Bezos could run
of course i think it's annoying when chatters hassle him for every single thing that he does, but saying "we shouldn't be expected to do anything small or attainable when there are BIG ISSUES to deal with so worry about those ok?" is so ridiculous. yeah let's all solve poverty and THEN start planting some clover
“I’m not going to wipe my ass until we finally cure cancer. Come on, lets get the big stuff done first guys 🙄”
On the other hand I would also try to say something like that if people start trying to get me for having a lawn.
When people fight strangers over niche topics, they're generally lashing out not at the stranger specifically, but society at large for depriving them of an alternative. Doesn't make it right, but consider the following...
You want to be a clover-head? Have fun dealing with your HOA.
You want to be a bike-to-work Andy? Have fun dealing with the American automotive monopoly on transportation infrastructure.
You want to be urbanist-pilled and live in a multiplex instead of a detached family home? Have fun fighting for the scraps of real estate left unallocated by single-family zoning policies.
People of minority opinions and preferences would not feel the need to evangelize if they weren't under constant societal pressure to conform and compromise.
For sure. Also I live in California so the lawn thing IS one of those big issues.
Sure, but I think you're assuming too much with the "small and attainable" bit. Like with lawns specifically this varies drastically by where you live, not everyone can get away with returning their lot to wilderness without getting buried in HOA complaints or tanking their property value. Obviously it doesn't need to remain that way, but that change comes with shifting the societal attitude towards lawns and not with harassing random grass-owners while they're playing a videogame so he'd still be right that it's a big picture issue first.
Best I can offer is a 15$ Monte Cristo Sandwich.
Team Unity stocks plummeting
What if you buy the game from the developers, and then 🏴☠ it. Does unity still know who to charge back?
Dev would get charged for both
What If I buy two copies and only use one, therefore ensuring nobody will ever open that 2nd copy??
Likely not, Unity has fraud detection that would most likely know you're on the same MAC address. All depends on how they're verifying users. @@pyramear5414

If anything the game would release even sooner so they would have more time to get sales before the fees kick in in January. The CEO is terrible but your lack of common sense or critical thinking is also pretty terrible.

Am i missing something, but don't most pirated games never need to be " installed " anymore and its just the cracked game files in the DL and you run the .exe
Unity is great but damn it runs like shit so I'm happy if everyone shifts away from it.
So unity have used the terms: "Installed", "Downloaded" and "Initialized" for this. A lot of the info around how this is going to be tracked is vague and they more or less said you have to trust their estimate. Kinda wild to charge developers based on a estimate.
Unity has been sinking for a while, that company is losing 200m per quarter they gotta do something to make money.
If you think this stunt is gonna make them money I have a bridge to sell you
@@euronimo34 I mean, assuming they don't change it it would make them money short term. Unity's kinda just cooked, they would've been shit on no matter how they tried to monetize.
If they don't charge for repeat installs the idea is reasonable, the pricing is a little high for the lower brackets but it also depends on how the pricing applies.
I'm sure there's a better way to monetize, but this doesn't seem like the worst way they could've done it.
@@talikerThis seems like the absolute worst way they could have actually done it. So in short, I disagree
@@euronimo34how much are you selling the bridge for?
@@greenoftreeblackofblue6625 I mean they could've made it so you can't release a game without unity pro, or retroactively charged for every install.
In terms of damage to the company this wasn't even the worst thing they did, the worst thing is the whole tos changes and tos github removal.
This man is a Canadian national treasure.
It's psychotic NL says before defending the guy
Being public ruins everything. Gaming companies, education… everything.

Him defending his lawn was a little too much of a double-down for my tastes. -2 for the peloton/lawn mower streamer from me
It only affects games that sell $200,000 worth of product AND 200,000 installs… it’ll be alright, y’all.
Edit: I stand by my take. YT comments are not a great place to argue but basically all I want to say is that the pricing is not egregious. The “worst case scenario” is you barely squeak over $200,000 dollars in one year. But for any game companies that were already making that much per year, they had pay for unity Pro (threshold was $100k per year before being forced to upgrade) which bumps the threshold up to $1,000,000 and lowers the cost per install. I don’t want to say that there’s no reason to worry, the change was sudden, but for most game developers this will not be a massive hit to their profit.
Nothing about this is remotely all right.
That is such a laughably low number
That's an insanely low amount considering, I get it if they want to target massive companies like genshin and raid shadow legends but a game like cult of the lamb sold 1 million copies, the issue extends really badly once you consider stuff like humble bundle and stuff like that
It's 200k gross. Consider devs owe a pretty big split of the pie to Steam (30%) and other platforms (usually less than Steam, but anywhere from 5 to 20%). Then they probably have a publisher split (which could be up to 50% depending on the contract), then taxes (which vary widely country by country, but can be expected to be another good chunk), and only then you may start talking about net profit...there's genuinely scenarios where devs end up in debt despite crossing those numbers, which would be pretty good for any indie game before this change. If it was 200k net, it'd be less bad, though still horrible.
Also the install floor won't be hard to pass at all, I don't trust Unity to be able to correctly track pirated copies, or game pass, or bundles, and things like that. Besides, if you have 200k in gross profits, you very likely have broken it already or soon will.
And this is only for indie devs targeting primarily PC platforms. The situation is probably even more dire for mobile devs, without even getting into the AA (Cult Of The Lamb, Slay The Spire, I don't know if those qualify as AA but you get what I mean) or AAA devs this change is mostly targeting (such as the Genshin or Hearthstone ones).
so wrong
The Coprophagia Sheep Game is getting deleted because Unity is bad???? Unity being bad is the CURRENT THING, twitter said so! Based! So trendy! Have you seen the greentext yet?? Have you seen it guys????
Dismissing trending topics as 'current thing' is so fucking dumb. Yeah dude, people are discussing it right now because it just happened. The passage of time causes events to happen. People are gonna talk about things that are happening.
I personally prefer people exclusively talk about irrelevant things that affect no one.
