- Nintendo Switch 2 is in the works, this much Nintendo has at least confirmed over the last few years when talking about a next-generation device. However, what if Nintendo just teased an upcoming feature for the system? It may have happened! That and we have an update on the situation in Japan, where Nintendo Live was cancelled earlier this year.

Yeah, it doesn’t even address the d pad or buttons in the patent. Patents like these are about the idea and functionality. Remember that anything published like this, if used in the future, would be used in a different way than the patent says.

It looks like it would be connecting your Switch 2 to smart phones/tablets. Are we about to see a successful Vita situation?
I think this is very likely the goal, and it seems like a very shrewd one at that. Suddenly the billions of smartphones out there could be utilized as controllers for some multiplayer games. This could be HUGE.

I'll agree with you. In the patent, from what I can see, the "consoles" are referred to as 100_x and the peripherals as 200_x. In 03:30 for example there are only 100_x systems comecting with each other, aka the "consoles".
It feels more like DS/3DS local multi-player where you could join a game even if only one person had the cartridge. I remember putting NSMB on a DS and comecting to it another DS and a 3DS. With only one copy of the game needed.
From the patent, it also seems like you could connect the 200_x peripherals (maybe an og Switch) to a 100_x console (maybe a Switch 2) so you could either use them as secondary screens (Wii U style) or play Switch 2 games on an og Switch (DS/3DS local multi-player style).
So DS download play basically? Or am I misunderstanding

Based on what I can figure out from the patent, in basic terms, it’s like doing Ds download play with your friends, but then also being able to connect to another console that is using download play to make a larger lobby. Whether that be over online and such im not sure. But it also has specific instances where it can swap who is giving the Download play/specific data to the other console and vice versa
Yeah, and it’s an idea. The fact it’s public means this exact method isn’t being used, but Furukawa even noted last year that it can mean if it is used, it’s used in a different updated way.
We’ll see if this ever makes it in.
I remember the DS use to have download play. Thats one of the reasons I got one back in the day. No internet and you only needed 1 copy to play multiplayer with friends. Played tons of mariokart and new supermario bros with that feature. It was a great feature.

Looks like the local play with multiple consoles playing a multiplayer game. Like what the switch can currently do. some said possible download play ala ds? Digging through patents to make news. I remember that early switch patent that had multiple devices connected which was to boast computing power.

that's very similar to an idea I've had for a long time for a switch successor's gimmick:
Use your switch as a controller on another switch. this way you can play idk let's say ssbu using your switch lite as a controller and have the game streamed to your screen, or something like that.
It also sounds like there's some compute offloading going on here, too? So that's neat.

This patent sounds a lot like local play on the 3DS. Perhaps an extension of the featuring some Mario party games for the 3DS only one person had to own the game and other people could join as guests
The patent kind of reminds me of remote play together that came about after the steam deck launch
That patent for the next-gen Nintendo console sounds interesting, but we don't know if it's true or not, we'll have to wait and see.
