Hans says at 50:15 that you don’t have to worry about spending 15k on thermal… if only he had known we could be spending 18k within the same year…

I get you're speaking generally here, but just wanted to point out where I disagree. In my experience high quality thermals (like the N-Vision Nox series) will actually ID better than a mid range NV. Now if you start talking super high end un-filmed L3 tubes and perfect lighting conditions... NV will have better detail. There's many situations though where NV will not work and those situations are something "preppers" need to be aware of. I'd personally purchase a decent (640 if possible) handheld with low base magnification (1x if wearing on helmet, up to 2x if handheld) over NV any day. The only time I grab NV first is when I need to moving faster than a medium walking pace and/or when in really rough terrain.

We had a gas shortage in Atlanta for a week and 99% of people were being pretty cool. But there was 1% that was annoyed and made life dangerous. I say this from personal experience. Imagine no food or power in a major city. The bad actors will take advantage of the situation so you better be ready to not leave your house period.

I'm a prepper and hunter and I have and use both night vision and thermal.
Not really use in storm or emergency situations. Basically they would come in handy if I had to hunt to survive and or there is no rule of law and you need to do anything outside your house under the cover of darkness. You need night vision to drive and or look through windows glass etc. Thermals are much much better at having to locate targets and or shoot at multiple targets. If I only had one I would choose thermal. But why not have both there pretty cheap compared to where they used to be.

Completely agree, I'd pick thermal first, as well. Night vision gets you to your location with around 175 yards of visibility. Thermal allows you to see hundreds of yards at anything that is out there, including camouflaged dudes out to hurt you.

Loved this episode! (Love the other ones too) but you guys should do more episodes like this, explaining and discussing all the these advantages & disadvantages or thoughts on thermal & night vision as a whole.

Hey guys, great show. I'm a prepper, and once I survived the Cron, I said I was buying some thermal and night vision. You guys are one of the best resources for learning what is currently out there. Hopefully I will be placing an order with y'all shortly. Keep up the good work.

Having a fire extinguisher in your kitchen is "prepping". Having some plywood and a generator in a hurricane zone is "prepping". I just picked up a TS25-384 as a prep. These days if you are not preparing for hard times you are just a naive fool.

I have the 940nm light on my pulsar night vision scope. Much harder to see, if at all, than the 850nm you find on many hunting rigs.

  • @suburbanprepper
    @suburbanprepper Před 2 lety +2

Im a prepper. Not really consider myself as a true hunter. Hunting is another skill set preppers use. Hans mentioned the PVS14, that is the absolute minimal for nightvision, or for the pvs7. Not so much for digital nightvision. you can use a pvs7 or 14 without putting the IR on... you are right about thermal... as far as powering, the solution is to use a solar generator as a power back up... q

Would have been so cool if you would have put video to this. You could have watched someone trying to walk across the pasture with thermal. Then reverse that and watch a guy walking across with IR. Your watching of course through thermal, then through IR.

500# of green beans under you grandmothers bed or 500# gallons of gasoline in your water bed, it’s all about giving you that warm fuzzy feeling that you’re ready for the next ice storm😂

One SHTF scenario to prep for that people forget about is ZOMBIES! The undead have no heat so make sure you have your sightmark wraith on one of your guns. If you only own thermal you are screwed! If you need one Jason and Hans are the guys to call to answer questions. And shipping is fast if it’s in stock. Lol. Seriously tho , if anyone is interested in either thermal or night vision you couldn’t ask for better service. Always enjoy the show guys!

I have to disagree. I absolutely love my night vision. It allows me to move around at night. But if I want to guarantee no one is out there, I'll scan the area with my thermal monocular before ever considering to move around in area with my night vision. Most folks can afford to purchase a $500-$1000 thermal monocular while using a red light to move around at night. Unfortunately, most cannot afford to purchase night vision for $3.500 - $12.000.

It's pretty easy to see IR nowadays, i dont know if i'd rely on a system like digital NV if I was worried about 2 legged critters.
I suppose if you throw thermal into the mix it's different, but youll still stick out like a sore thumb to anyone with gen2 or up analog NV if you're shining IR light.

One of my favorite episodes to date, I've always been a little fearful to admit that my thermal scope purchase had a LOT to do with the back of my mind thinking (I do not want to be caught without this tool) .. now on top of this my dad called me tonight and said we need to spend some time up in his hills as his dog just got into it with some coyotes , by the time him and my step brother were able to go grab rifles and flashlights .. well he's lucky his dog got off pretty good but had his little yipper dog not ran inside right away it would have been torn up.. and he lost another dog 2 years ago at sundown to what the vet said was most likely a large cat .. this is IA,NE,SD TRISTATE area..it's not ALL about hunting for these tools

Also I know CR123's are not the longest lasting batteries.. I have enough to power my unit for a LONG time .. not that expensive and NOT proprietary! And TulAmmo shoots straight enough for me within 100 yards lol

I have to disagree, if you have the budget for the true high tiered units (BAE, POT, etc), then clip ons are the best units you can get. The pixels on target voodoo s is by far the best general use thermal I've ever used. Superior image to N vision and Trijicon thermals, milspec, IR laser, true return to zero clip on with a wilcox FTS mount... the works.
This being said, most people don't realize that if you want a unit like this, you'll pay for it...and you'll pay a lot. I agree that the best combo is a handheld with a lower res sensor and a higher tiered weapon's thermal. The new RH25 is a good option as well.

There are 2 types of SHTF. One is with the lights on and the other is with the lights off. Digital NV is great with the lights on because of ambient light. If there is total SHTF with the lights off digital is useless w/o IR. The best system is a helmet / PVS14 with designator/illuminator. SHTF with the lights on and and nobody else with NV would be the best. I'm actually glad this stuff is expensive cuz if everyone had one SHTF would be dangerous.
