Used to work on these trains as a conductor. The staff all hated these double decker wagons and the Vienna-Zürich-Hamburg route. Best wagons were the old German sleeper carriages with blue upholstery. Excellent design, and loved by passengers and staff alike. They were only used on the routes to Milan, Venice and Rome.
Please spare a small tip for your wagon attendants if you can. It's a tough job, especially in summer, and the company doesn't treat the workers very well.

Once, many years ago when the City Night Line still existed, I saw one of those in Utrecht, the Netherlands. While the train drove off before I could take it all in, it was a complete riot of different carriages. I managed to get a confirmed spotting of a similar consist, and it had Swiss, Austrian, German, Czech and Hungarian carriages, in all sorts of colours, and both single and double deck. Took me years to collect them as models, and the WRmbz will require some rebuilding of an ARkimbz.
It's good to see that ÖBB picked up where the other European operators all but gave up on night trains.

These double decker are old City Night Line coaches that have been taken over by ÖBB. I traveled in one of the deluxe compartments and I was disappointed. It seems that there was only a paint job on the outside done. Inside the shower could not be used as water was floating in the basin amongst some dust flakes... No power socket in the compartment other than in the bathroom. Apart from that the service was good but they have to step up a notch when it comes to the maintenance of the compartments.

Nice video. Thanks for making it. I'm happy to see that night trains are still scheduled in Europe. Several years ago , I traveled from Lyon ,France overnight to Barcelona ,Spain. I was lucky enough to get Grand Class. The room was a good size, the beds were wider , it had the shower , etc. and included a four star diner . The dining car was wonderful. It had linen table cloths & napkins, real china and the waiter was dressed in a double breasted white jacket. He placed two champagne flutes on the table and filled them with a wonderful Brut champagne before placing the menu on our table. All the wine and other drinks were also included in the five course diner. When we got back to our room, the beds were turned down with chocolates on the pillow. I would love to repeat that experience some day.

Last Thursday I travelled from Innsbruck to Amsterdam in a deluxe sleeper. A superb journey with excellent breakfast and very efficient staff. Unfortunately the train left Innsbruck 10 minutes late due to awaiting a connecting train (there is a lot of infrastructure work currently on the Arlberg route) and, having lost it's paths, it arrived in Amsterdam 135 minutes late (very inconvenient for anyone trying to connect to a Eurostar service) This delay seems not to be a rarity on this route as 2 weeks earlier I observed the same train arriving in Amsterdam 100 minutes late. I do not think the delay was down to OeBB - more likely DB. It's a shame that London is not connected to the Nightjet network but I cannot see that happening at anytime in the future - we have a Government intent on restricting travel for anyone but the elite!

I travelled on these coaches when they were brand new in 1997. I tried both the Standard room, the Deluxe room and the Familly room (the one with 4 beds). As many others have said, the Standard rooms are way too small. A single suitcase can easily take up most of the floor space in the room. I couldn't see it clearly on the video, but these coaches originally had storage space for luggage underneath the stairs of each compartment, but I think they were dropped later on due to theft. The familly room was slightly better. It is situated right over the bogie, so it's a little bit noisy compared to the other compartments. It's pretty much a couchette room, but with sleeping car service. The deluxe room however is AMAZING. Hands down the best sleeper compartment you can get in the EU. It was a real shame you didn't get to book one.

I disagree. I think the deluxe on the other European double-decker sleeper - the VR Finnish Railways is better (that's not saying the NJ isn't very good though). Where the NJ is better is that breakfast is inluded whereas on the VR service it's not (It's my only complaint about the VR service which at least does have a proper restaurant car - and served fantastic Swedish meatballs too!)

I agree about the space situation. I made a few times Zurich-Hamburg and Zurich-Vienna with NJ (former CNL). Travelling alone is OK with the Standard room. But I would never order a Standard room again for a couple.
First it is somehow claustrophobic (if you are keen to that) and 2nd, you have no chance to store luggage for a 2-3 week stay for 2 persons into that tiny compartment. It was completely unconfortable for two. Will give a try to the Luxury room for 2 next time, to check the situation regarding the luggage.

I have taken this train on the exact same route in the exact same kind of cabin in one of those double decker wagons with a friend back in 2019. It was an overall horrible experience for both of us. That cabin is sooo extremely small and claustrophobic when two persons are occupying it. The top bed, which is retracted in this video but was folded out on our trip since we were two, hangs so low that you can barley sit on the other, lower bed because when you do, the top bed is slamming right into your neck, making it very uncomfortable to sit on the lower bed. You kinda have too sit in a very awkward position. We tried to retract the top bed ourselves so we can at least sit in a human way until it's time for bed but it's literally impossible to retract the top bed without the assistance of the attendant. We asked him if he could retract the bed for the time being so we can normally sit, but he told us that it's a lot of work to do so (and as we learned later on, it is a lot of work) and that he doesn't see the point in doing so because he would've had to fold it back out in a couple of ours anyway when we go to sleep. But he offered us to stay in his cabin (the attendants have their own cabin but with regular seats instead of beds) until we go to sleep and this kinda saved our experience since we were now at least able to sit in a normal position until bed time. There's also zero room for luggage in the cabin. You have some kind of a locker were you have enough space to put handbags into it, but that's it. There wasn't any space underneath the bottom bed because some supporting metal structure is there to hold the bed, that makes it impossible to store anything underneath the bed. So we somehow cramped my suitcase underneath the unnecessary sink and my friends smaller travel-bag at the end of my bed (yes i had to sleep mit less space on my bed because i had to share it with a travel-bag). We could've left my friends travel-bag on the floor but since the cabin was so small there wasn't much floor left. We certainly would've stepped on it every time we enter our cabin or when we get out of our beds. Yes, you read that correctly: Two suitcase are enough to cover most of the floor-area, that isn't occupied by the bottom bed. That's how ridiculously small the cabin is.
Now the positives: The beds are pretty comfortable and the attendant was very friendly and truly concerned about our comfort and he did let us use his cabin so we have it comfortable until bed time. In the morning he retracted that top bed so we can normally sit and eat our breakfast and this is where we learned that retracting that top bed really isn't an easy move. It requires many steps and quit a bit of time. So we weren't mad at him for denying our request to retract the bed before.
Price: If you're travelling with a friend, it costs 150€/Person. For that super small and claustrophobic cabin, this is definitely overpriced. That tiny breakfast in the morning, that will leave a grown man hungry for sure, doesn't make up for that major inconvenience. I guess it's much nicer if you're occupying a cabin by yourself and the top bed is retracted, however you have to buy two tickets than to make sure you don't end up sharing your tiny cabin with some stranger. So 300€ just to have this tiny cabin on your own. That's too much as well.
My advice: Just by a normal Ticket and save your money. It's not worth the price at all.

One thing. As you say usually the double-decker is on the Vienna-Zurich route or Zurich-Hamburg. However when I travelled from South-west Germany on Christmas night 2018 even though I wanted to especially go on the double-decker coach, and my destination was Hamburg, for some reason it was on the Zurich-Berlin NJ consist rather than the NJ to Hamburg! So had to do a "detour" to Berlin instead of going straight to Hamburg! (hey, still cool to take a night train into Berlin Hbf!)
So my advice if you especially want to travel on the double-decker NJ into/from Germany - just be careful to check with OBB first to make sure which route it's on, on a particular evening.

Thank you for sharing this nice video ? Et de Feldkirch (frontière avec la Suisse), ils sont couplés à l'Auto-train. Souvent je mettais la moto dessus pour aller jusqu'à la frontière et rentrer par la route pour le weekend.

I obviously LOVE your videos. They not only teach me a lot about European train travel, but I feel like I can "escape" for just a little bit while I start my Friday. I hope you don't mind if I point out one tiny mistake you made. You posted the same UK Pound and US Dollar conversion twice; once for the cost of the standard sleeper, (solo use I believe), and again for the six bed couchette. I honestly don't think that €69.90 actually converts to £135.97 or $161.19. Like I said; a tiny mistake, and again, I hope you don't mind I pointed it out.

@@NonstopEurotrip Oh you are welcome...I am happy to help!! Well if you would like; I do have one more comment to make; this time about the price itself. I've pointed it out on other channels' comments as well. To an American, especially one living in an expensive state like CT. The price for the solo sleeper accommodation you described is actually quite reasonable. To give you an example; Boston, MA. to Washington DC. is a similar distance as your Vienna to Zurich. To purchase a first class day ticket on the Acela Express can cost $350.00, ( €342.13/ £291.94). This does give you free food, but obviously no sleeper to lay your head down and it is about a 6.5 hour ride. There ARE sleeper trains from Boston to Washington, and those cost $555.00, (€542.26/£460.93) just for the roomette, (For some reason the website would not allow me to switch to a bedroom instead of a roomette, but those WOULD be a LOT more expensive. As you may know; the two big differences between the Amtrak roomette and the bedroom are 1)Much more space, and 2) The roomette does not have a private bathroom, but depending on whether it is a Superliner or a Viewliner, then there ARE showers and shared bathrooms either down the stairs, (Superliner), or down the hall, (Viewliner). The bedroom will have one, and again there are free meals in the dining car, but not in the café area which would be down the stairs in the viewing car. (Please note: In the US, with Amtrak travel, tipping is part of the culture, and is appreciated for the Red Cap that may help you get on or off the train, for the room attendant, and for the dining car wait staff even if you are not paying extra otherwise for the meal. I usually give $5 to each redcap that helps me, and $5/night to the room attendant. I do the normal "restaurant percentage" for the wait staff... 10% if only barely ok, 15% if decent but underwhelming, 20% if above average, and 22-25% of the dinner cost if exceptional.)

As I'm from Zurich I visited a friend in Linz, 7h+ and back. Was great too. Soon will be buzzing through Europe with a Interrail ticket. No big idea to where but that will be. My most and best travel on train was in Kazakstan from Almaty to Astana (in 2018, now the city is called Nur-Sultan).
