    Fun fact that you did not mention, but between Feldkirch and Buchs you also travel through the tiny state of Liechtenstein. The train has no stops there but you were in 3 countries during this voyage 🙂.

      I know about it, but I forgot to mention it. Thanks for the reminder. I think this train usually go through even 4 countries, because part of the line still run through Germany, but we took a diversion route through Zell am See.

    In the 60is and 70is a lot of folk took overnight trains , and used sleepers and couchettes. For a single traveller {who did not drive} it was a very practical and comfortable way of travelling.
    Very interesting report. Keep it up !!

      @@PeteBrandy I don t really think that the night trains are coming back to be popular at all. This is just a general marketing over the EU trying to move people from their cars to trains. An somehow a today propaganda as this subject is imeddiately pushed up by the CZcams algorithm.
      by the way, why are you calling it as DELUXE? there nothing compatible with DELUXE in the video, just regular night sleeping train standard since the 70s.
      DELUXE = luxurious or sumptuous; of a superior kind.

    I've been on the night train from Budapest to Zürich in May. We had a mishap in the Alps (Muhrenabgang near Ötztal) and had to switch to busses between two stations early in the morning but it was handled very professionally, and since the weather was nice and I had no connection to make, I enjoyed the enhanced immersion into the scenic Vorarlberg landscape.

      @PeteBrandy  Před rokem +2

      Díky moc! Ten vůz je opravdu zajímavý, počet a rozmístění zásuvek bohužel odpovídá době jeho vzniku (rok 1995), lůžkové vozy Siemens které mají ČD jsou na tom podobně, jedna zásuvka v koupelně a jedna dole u postele a ZSSK WLABmee jen jedna zásuvka ve skříňce nad umyvadlem.. Ale věřím že až ÖBB obdrží nové Nightjet jednotky, tak bude mít více prostoru na upgrade těch starších :-)

      Thanks so much! Yes, it is very interesting that there are no double-decker trains in the UK, they are very common in continental Europe. Btw. these double-decker sleeping cars are very rare, only 10 of these cars are in service (Zurich - Vienna and Zurich Hamburg). But in Finland, for example, there are mostly double-decker sleeping cars.

It was mostly a smooth and enjoyable journey, except for a small section near the Arlberg pass where our cabin had a leak when it was raining outside. Wonder if that's why they took one of the double decker sleeper coaches out of service haha

      Traveling during off season has its advantages, the trains tend to be less crowded and, moreover, it's not so difficult to book a deluxe cabin on this train. Pete you were so lucky, that you tried NightJet sleeper in 2023. I checked prices today and in new schedule prices jump so high, they are more than doubled... Single is around 400 euro, but Single deluxe more than 500 euros. Even cheapest triple is more than 100 euros. Too expensive for Central Europeans budgets :/

    Another good report Pete, seems like a good deal when you factor in the price of a hotel and the cost of the journey, have you any idea how good the sound proofing is in the cabins I’m working hard on my wife to take the nightjet hopefully the one to Hamburg from Vienna or vice versa but she’s worried about noisy neighbours, really enjoy your reports you’re inspiring me to start my travels again

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před rokem

      Thanks so much! I calculate it the same way, the hotel + the flight ticket would be more expensive :-) As for the sound proofing, it depends a lot on the type of sleeping car, the worst are the cars that have interconnecting doors between compartments, through which you can hear every word... which are, for example, WLABmz comfortline cars.. here it is good to take a Deluxe cabin because there is also a bathroom between the compartments. But a lot also depends on the composition of the passengers. However, I always use earplugs when traveling on night trains :-)

    In deluxe these cars are wonderful. Economy compartments are only half the size though (ok for a single traveller but very restricted for two), and unlike the WLABmz Comfortline there's no public shower.
    By the way if you travel in the Hungarian sleeping-car from Budapest the ride is shorter, you don't have such a long stopover in Salzburg. The train departs later from Vienna or arrives earlier in the morning in the other direction. But the MÁV sleeping-cars have no deluxe compartments and, according to my sister, are a bit noisy/squeaky at night.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching! Yes, standard (economy) compartments are a bit tiny, but also good when you travel alone. Yes, Hungarian "EN Kalmán Imre" portion has shorter ride time. I tried these Hungarian sleeping cars on the EN Metropol from Budapest to Berlin in 2022 and as you told, they are a bit noisy (I also have a video here).

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před rokem +1

      Yes, these cars correspond to the time of their production and they already need a modernisation. But in my opinion, they are still one of the most comfortable sleeping cars (as for the deluxe cabins on the upper deck).

  • @leonidasse

    Yeah the single occupancy compartments are ok-ish on these double deckers but I don’t wish anybody travel in 2- or even 3-berth ones. I was forced to travel in a double once and being 1.9 m tall + a regular suitcase was a total nightmare, not a nightjet.
    I seriously can’t imagine how ppl can travel in the 3-berth tuna cans. The regular single-decker compartments are way more spacious.

      There is no dining car on this train, but you can purchase some refreshments from the sleeping car attendant.

    Ten vůz vypadá skvěle, ale jak si psal, chtělo by to Wi-FI, víc zásuvek a bylo by to dokonalé :D

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před rokem +1

      To ano, ty vozy jsou skvělé, ale co se týče zásuvek a Wi-Fi, tak jsou poplatné době svého vzniku, což asi vyřeší nějaká rekonstrukce. Při té poslední se tuším akorát dávaly jiné podvozky, ale vybavení se neupgradovalo.

    Deluxe sleeper for solo occupancy. I like your thinking. 🙌

      @@PeteBrandy I remember an interrail trip towards Scandinavia: Didn't slept in a hotel/hostel during four nights in a row between the hostel beds in Hamburg and Turku ... The first part was planed - due to a journey through very pricey Norway(Hamburg-Fehmarn-Helsingor/-borg-Oslo-Stavanger-Preikestolen-Oslo-Stockholm) ... the second part caused by a music band called Metallica - they managed to tour in Stockholm and two nights later in Helsinki(me:Stockholm-Boden-Haparanda-Tornio-Kemi-Helsinki-Turku) - hence, no budget accomodation available anymore ...
      !Though: had a cheap sleeper bed supplement between Kemi/Oulu and Helsinki - beside that, everything in seating accomodation ...
      As you announce another film about a connection from Zurich (...towards Praque via Linz or Leipzig), I assume you also skip the not exactly cheap swiss accomodations ;)

      These cars correspond to the time of their production, including facilities (power sockets, Wi-Fi). I hope they will be modernised sometime.. But I think they are still one of the best products on the market.

    That is a sensational price for the Deluxue Sleeper! In 1998 I paid £199 one way from London to Edinburgh. I just remember the coffee in the morning was served in a pot and it was HOT!! It's strange about the wi-fi and lack of power outlets.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před rokem

      Yes, the price was great, I had a luck to still catch the promo fare (Sparschiene), otherwise the tickets are more expensive on this route.. The missing Wi-Fi and lack of power outlets corresponds to the year of production of these cars, I hope that after the new Nightjet units will be delivered (the Railjet based ones), so they will have time to upgrade these cars :-)
