Stop everything and make this cake if you love blueberries! This cake is beyond moist, with the perfect zing from lemon zest and juice. I divided my buttercream into two batches; one is flavored with a blueberry reduction while the other is all lemon. I'm not sure if my meager description is doing the cake any justice but it was soooo good! I really loved it as a naked cake because the cake itself is soo tasty it really doesn't need a lot of frosting, you don't want to mask the flavor with too much sugar. - Jak na to + styl

Amazing recipe, THANK YOU!! my cake came out delicious, but next time I’ll put less sugar than suggested (man, Americans sure do use an insane amount of sugar). I made lemon cream cheese buttercream instead of just buttercream, very delicious and really elevated the frosting. (If anyone is interested: 200 g butter 200 g cream cheese, beat them in a mixer, then add 2 Tbs lemon juice and 3/4 to 1 cup confectioners sugar depending on how sweet you’d like it, and mix)
Thanks fot the advice! I did it in the same way and literally the Frosting was too sweet as you said, I had to remove it and let it naked, I'm going to try your frosting with cream cheese next time.

Not all of us like too much sugar or fat. I'm health conscious. I will also use less sugar 👍😋
Measurements -
Dry ingredients:
1 3/4 cups or 235 g flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 2/3 cup or 245 g sugar
Wet ingredients:
1/3 cup lemon juice
Zest 1 lemon
3 egg whites (whole egg optional, will turn batter yellow)
1/2 cup or 120 ml whole milk
3/4 cup or 170g room temp butter
1/2 cup or 120 ml sour cream
3 tsp vanilla.
Mix wet and dry ingredients, don't over mix
Fold in 1 1/3 cup fresh blueberries (coat blueberries with a thin layer of flour- prevents from sinking )
1 tbsp lemon zest
Bake at 340 F for 25-30 mins
Blueberry reduction :
1 cup blueberries
1 tbsp water
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp lemon juice
Buttercream :
1 lb or 445 g butter- room temperature
1/4 tsp salt
2 lbs confectioners sugar
1 tbsp lemon juice- add amount to preferred taste
Reserve 1/3 of buttercream to make blueberry buttercream:
1 tbsp -add in some blueberry reduction to buttercream.

My 7 yr old and I made this cake this past weekend. The whole family loved it. I did ice the whole cake the same as in between the layers and I also piped the out rim on top and top with the same colors. The marbled looked was beautiful. Can’t wait to do this again.

I made this cake twice and it was my first time making a “naked” cake and using his baking strips idea on the second cake made the color so much lighter and the cakes were flat. At the time, I had to DYI the strips but have since purchased some and use them all the time. I even used them to make my 2nd cheese cake. Love this channel and John is very good about explaining and giving alternative methods. Thanks, John!

This recipe is so delicious! I have made this twice. The second time I made a lemon curd and folded into buttercream for between the layers. On this one didn’t do blueberry reduction but still fab!

Hi John~My family and friends loved this cake!! I made it for my vegetarian son's birthday. They raved about this cake feeling it was a "healthy" cake to enjoy. I used the purple buttercream on the top and sides of this yummy light cake. I added a layer of lemon preserves to the middle and filled my two-layer cake with the white lemon buttercream. I used the white lemon buttercream to make the dollops on top, filled the circle with frozen blueberries and put re-lighting birthday candles into each peak of the dollops. I 'm not one to really prank anyone. However, it was soooo worth it to see the joy on my son's face and hear all the laughter. This is now my son's favorite cake! Thank you for this beautiful creation and for sharing it with us.

I made your lemon blueberry cake with your lemon curd and Italian merengue buttercream recipe. It's very delicious. It's way better than this very expensive lemon and piña colada two tier fondant cake that I had for my babyshower. Also, better than most bakeries. When mine came out of the oven, my sponge cakes got a little dry when resting, so I made lemon simple syrup to moisten the sponge cakes and it was more flavorful. My family and love the vibrant lemony flavors. Thanks for sharing your recipe. I'll be making other of your cake and food recipes.

I made this for the first time today. It's absolutely wonderful! I added some extra lemon and blueberry, and used a lemon, blueberry, and honey Italian meringue buttercream. The only complaint was that I should have strained the reduction. The layers rose evenly with no caramelization, even without cake strips.

OMG this cake is so delicious and beautiful! I'm making it for my mom's birthday and will let you know how it goes. I'm a little intimidated as I'm not a baker but I found your tips to be really helpful such as weighing the flour, weighing the cake pans to evenly distribute the batter, using cake strips (who knew?) and using two bags of frosting in one bag to get the two-tone. Sorry...these things might be no-brainers to a lot of you but for me, they were revolutionary ideas! LOL

Made this cake for my 5yo son’s birthday. He wanted a blueberry cake. I used 4 cups of sugar in the frosting rather than 6 and dyed it blue with sprinkles. But the cake itself was just beyond my expectations, so wonderful.
