  • Great powers rise and great powers fall. The Merovingians were no exception, but their slow decline allowed the rise of a new dynasty, a dynasty that would shape the face of Europe for the centuries to come, the Carolingians! #ProjectClovis

    Frankish history, especially following the collapse of the Roman Empire, is both messy and complicated, and I wouldn't have been able to accurately portray the Royal Faide without this brilliant video by "Questions d'Histoire": czcams.com/video/m8t--HG_V7k/video.html - if you understand French, then I strongly recommend you check out his channel!

    And so the Project Clovis is finally complicated! If I'm not mistaken, it was one of the shortest among these collaborations but no less interesting. Plus it was the most focused, with a clearly defined topic in a specific chronological and geographical frames, which has advantages. I'm already starting to get excited for the next collaboration.
    BTW, was that a Medieval-style cover of the "Pumped Up Kicks" in the background near the end? 😅

    Thanks for this outstanding video about the fundamental age of Western Europe's Late Antique period. Yet, it is unfortunate that the Merovingians' legacy remains mostly downgraded vis-a-vis their Carolingian successors, who might have never arisen to eventually trigger Charles Martel, thereby condemning our Medieval European ancestors to succumb to Islam...
    Without the Merovingian Clovis, Chilperic, and Clothar, the so-called "Mayors of the Palace" would not have emerged. Indeed, without the early (brutal) Merovingian rule our beloved Western World would have never come into being, due to the forced Islamisation under the Al-Andalus province of the Umayyad Caliphate...

    Clothar’s murder of his young nephew children was one of the more brutal episodes in an already brutal history. I believe both nephews were 7 and 10 years old respectively and were to lured to their uncles Clothar and Childebert and thus savagely murdered by Clothar himself. I suppose though, if one were to look at it from a Merovingian king’s point of view, these two boys could in just a few years grow up and raise armies against Clothar, defeat him in battle, take his realm and execute he and his family. In this sense, the murder of his nephews may have been strategic and sensible (when looked at through the eyes of the brutal world of Merovingian kings).

    There are a few small innaccuracies:
    1) The (various) burgundies where not largely peopled by franks, but by a mix of gothic, gallic and various Mediterranean people.
    a) These were also closer to associated to, than part of the frankish kingdom(s). The regions geographical barriers made military expeditions into it rather impractical, so control from outside was very weak.
    2) The main factor that made the original carolingians so successful, was an excellent bureaucracy. After this was neglected, because of the family feud, the highest level of organization quickly fell to the level of the holdings of individual members of the "gentry". So the maps after the division of the kingdom among the 4 heirs represent more the fantasy of princes, than any realistic situation.

      @ThisisBarris  Před 3 lety +1

      @@ThisisBarris , thanks for making your greatl content. I only intended to comment on the widespread tendency to think of nations as having existed far into the past, while its people have only (relatively) recently "united" as a whole. Not to criticize your work specifically.

    • @ThisisBarris
      @ThisisBarris  Před 3 lety +2

      Oh I definitely agree! I think the idea of a nation as we have it today is a very recent concept and just didn't exist in the past. People tend to implement present ideologies in the past (for example when the French says "our ancestor the gauls", implying Gaul was a unified state that existed before France) which I think is a bad thing. I'm glad you enjoy it.

    I feel bad for Childeric III, the last of the Merovingians.
    What a miserable 8 years of "rule" he must've had. You're the last living member of a once great family, thrown into the spotlight but no ability to do anything that matters. No hope, no way out, just dreadfully waiting on the small estate that was his home between public appearances.
    At the end of it all, have the literal symbol of his family, the long hair that exemplified everything, shaved off him and his son and thrown into a monastery to die.

    Didn't Henry II of the Plantegenet dynasty and Angevin Empire also follow Frankish tradition by splitting his lands between his sons? I ask since he was Duke of Normandy and Count of Anjou before winding up King of England, but as a French noble.

    • @ThisisBarris
      @ThisisBarris  Před 4 lety +5

      Yes, it's possible that he was inspired by Frankish traditions although I could not find anything that definitely affirm this. This was a transitory time and so no traditions were set in stone and it wasn't rare for kings to go back to the old ways. However, it's clear that the idea of primogeniture succession had emerged since his oldest son rebelled against him, not wanting his inheritance to be split apart!

This historian apparently believed that if the Saracens had prevailed against the Franks, Islam would have displaced Christianity in France and throughout Western Europe..
