"No tactical reason for paratroopers?" The 173rd airborne brigade jumped into northern Iraq and seized airfields, bridges, and dams prior to the invasion.

@@phonzirocks that’s why air superiority is the first priority in war before deploying paratroopers. Airborne units are still essential in modern warfare. An example is the Russian airborne units that were tasked in to take and hold Hostemel (apologies if I spelled it wrong) airport behind enemy lines until the main armor units push in to relieved them.

It was cause how well the movie "Saving Pvt Ryan" did that they (Spielberg / Hanks) were able to do this series. this series is based on the (1992) Book " Band of Brothers" by Steven Ambrose and some from another book "Parachute Infantry" by a member of the unit. From the time i was 17 yrs old every Jan at the Battle of the Bulge Reenactment in Fort Indiantown GAP, PA with E/ 506th living history unit we had almost all the org. Troopers with us (along with Troopers from other Airborne units) in our Barrack's and at the public battle. it was this event were i grew up Drinking Prop Blast listing to stories , laughing and singing with these Troopers. God i miss them scalawags those late night drunk Grunt to Grunt talks sitting on bunks with canteen cups of Prop blast and it was this event were XXXX read the letter he got from Tom Hanks asking permission to do it. XXXX then asked us what we thought and we shouted a big HELL YES!! lifting our drinks 100+ Drunken Troopers cheering, them were some epic hangovers, with in the Paratroopers they have Pathfinders who jump in 1st to mark the DZ (drop zone) for the main units.

Rather than scouting, the primary purpose of airborne infantry is to seize or destroy key points such as bridges, crossroads, airfields, etc ahead of an invasion force, and then hold out until the main force arrives. These objectives can be many, but are usually based around either denying the enemy the ability to bring up reinforcements and supplies to the front, or to prevent the enemy from destroying a key bridge or other piece of infrastructure that might hold up the advance.

The airborne were a completely new concept during WW2 and their purpose was to drop behind enemy lines, hence the need to carry so much equipment, as you see in this episode. I see you are a couple of episodes in by now IRL. I suggest maybe rewatching the early episodes or try to really nail down familiarity with some of the main characters. This series does a great job of following characters and storylines somewhat accurately. In some cases events happened to other characters who aren't featured in the series, but are assigned to the guys we know, or story lines are created out of a mix of real occurances, but in most cases we have snippets with characters in the early episodes that will become focus points later, and in many cases the real actors were able to get true stories or first person insights by consulting with the surviving men into the show. Many of these actors have collaborated after Band Of Brothers on many projects and held mini reunions since the show, good case in point right now is some movies and shows in the UK, produced by Philip Barantini (Sisk) and Bart Raspoli (Tipper) [Boiling Point] with Ross McCall (Liebgott) [About Us/A Violent Man/Suspicion] Stephen Graham (Ranney) Dexter Fletcher (Martin) [Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman] and the US with Frank John Hughes (Guarnier), Rick Gomez (luz), James Madio (Perconte) and Kirk Acevedo (Toye) [The Offer]. Mike Cudlitz (Bull Randleman) set up annual reunions with actual Easy men and the actors as well. Richard Speight Jr. (SKip Muck) {Supernatural} has some good pods, as well as We Happy Few 506 with Matthew Leitch (Talbert) who has had many of the UK actors on.. There's some great Pods out there and zoom calls during the pandemic that had many of the actors on. And theres an 11th epiosode after with the backstory and interviews with the actual guys......
Anyway, a good googling of the actors faces and names, just try to avoid the spoilers in who makes it thru and who doesn't......
    Curahee!!
