At the time (2001), Band of Brothers was the most expensive TV miniseries ever made. The high degree of historical accuracy and Tom Hanks being attached to the project meant that basically everyone that worked in Hollywood tried to get in on it. "are they being dropped off in germany?" "you don't even know where you're gonna land, do you?"
No worries about not knowing the exact details (sometimes things aren't taught, sometimes things aren't remembered), but this was for D-Day. They were taught the plan of the operation and their part in it (the part with all the maps). I guess it doesn't count as a spoiler, but the plan was a massive coordinated attack on a coast in Normandy, France, but with weather that wasn't ideal. Allied forces bombed the area beforehand to try and take out as much as they could. This would be followed by the paratroopers (101st and 506th, our guys here) dropping in to secure more positions inland. Then the amphibious assault on the beach for all the troops to come in (opening of Saving Private Ryan). Bombers missed a lot of targets, so the planes carrying the paratroopers saw a lot of resistance, scattering the paratroopers in all the chaos. So they weren't gonna land in Germany, but France. They knew where they were supposed to land, technically, but it became enough of a mess that they mostly had to scramble to find out where they were, and many were able to accomplish their objectives.

Watching your channel for the first time and I subscribed mainly for your expressions appreciating what makes up the cinematic arts. I do encourage you to continue with Band of Brothers. You will not be disappointed.
Ezekiel left a comment that there were 1,200 planes used to drop the paratroopers on D-Day just after midnight on June 6, 1944. There were three divisions of paratroopers totaling 23,400 men. One division was the British 6th Airborne and the other two were the American 82th and 101st Airborne. Many American paratroopers missed their drop zones (DZs) due to evasive action taken by the airplanes to avoid heavy anti-air ground fire as will be pointed out in the upcoming episode. Members of both divisions were scattered and many were mixed with each other.
Currahee was the name of the mountain next to Camp Toombs, Toccoa (ta-co'-ah), Georgia. Currahee is a Cherokee Indian word which means "Stand Alone."
In the series you will note that there is a symbol of a playing card's spade (♠) on the helmets. This identified the wearer was of the 506th Paratrooper Infantry Regiment. You will also note the arm patch of an eagle known as a 'screaming eagle' which denoted the wearer as a member of the 101st Airborne Division. On the back of some helmets are either a horizontal or vertical white bar. The horizontal bar indicated that this individual was a noncommissioned officer such as a sergeant. The vertical bar represented an officer. They were put on the back of the helmet for two reasons. One was not to allow the enemy to know who the leaders were and the second was for the men following their leader to be able to recognize him.
Easy company is part of the 2nd Battalion of the 506th Regiment.
You may find it helpful to understand the hierarchy of the designated units you will hear mentioned in this series. This list will begin with the lowest unit and end with the highest. All solider strengths are approximate since it varied due to combat losses.
    • Squad: Referred to as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd squads. Normally 12 men in each.
    • Platoon: Composed of three squads. Referred to as 1st, 2nd and 3rd platoons. About 40 men. Commanded by a 2nd or 1st lieutenant.
    • Company: Composed of three platoons. Referred to by letters A, B, C, . . . K. About 140 men. Commanded by a captain. Easy is E company. There will also be a reference to Fox which is F company.
    • Battalion: Composed of three companies. Referred to as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd battalion. About 500 men. Commanded by a major or lieutenant colonel. In "Ban of Brothers" (BoB) the battalion commander was Major Stayer. A, B, & C companies are in the 1st battalion; D, E, & F are in the 2nd battalion; and G, H, & I are in the 3rd battalion. This applies to only to airborne units. Regular infantry had four companies per battalion.
    • Regiment: Composed of three battalions. About 1,600 to 2,000 men. Commanded by a colonel. In BoB Colonel Sink portrays the commander of of the 506th Paratrooper Infantry.
    • 101st Airborne Division: Composed of four regiments. The 327th Glider Infantry and the 501st, 502nd, and 506th Paratrooper Infantry Regiments. Commanded by a major general.
(The continuance of organizational hierarchy is outside of the scope of the HBO series.)
    • Corps (pronounced 'kor'): Designated by Roman numerals. Composed of two to four divisions. Commanded by a major general or lieutenant general.
    • Army: Composed of two to four corps. Designated by full spelling of an ordinal number, i.e. FIRST or NINTH Army. Commanded by general.
    • Army Group: Composed of two to four armies. Designated by numerical ordinal number, i.e. 21st Army Group (British and Canadians) or 12th Army Group (Americans).
    • Theater: Composed of several army groups.

In the book (Stephen Ambrose, Band of Brothers), it becomes clear that Sobel's failure resulted from being promoted beyond his competence. He was put in charge of the company because he had previously been a Paratrooper in the National Guard before the war. They suddenly had to create this huge army, so they had to use everyone they had from before to take charge at least during training the new recruits. He was so busy pushing the men to train harder and to impose discipline and assert his authority all the time that he fell behind with his own training as an officer. Particulary with map reading and tactics. He was able to keep up with the physical training, even though he hadn't been selected for fitness like the new recruits had been. But the officer skills which required more intelligence and study he wasn't good enough at.

There is an implied failure on the part of Sobel's superiors not to recognise and deal with his inadequacies before it became necessary for his noncoms to stage a revolt. They were probably so impressed by his 'efficiency' that they failed to take measures to correct his inabilities. Sending him to head a parachute school is not a good fix; he is not capable of passing on skills he does not possess, so he ain't the right fit there either.

Historian and Veteran here. Glad you picked up this great series.
1Weekend pass refers to a 48 hour pass to leave the base as a break to enjoy yourr weekend, usually into town. Unlike civilian life in the military you are always on duty, if you want time off you have to have Military Leave and must be approved by your company commander, in this case by Lt Soble. Typically its 2.5 days off for every 30 days of active duty. Most commands give weekend leave anyway but restrict recruits or trainees to the base alone Otherwise your training or assigned to working parties over the weekend. When your on leave you can do whatever as long as you return at the end of your allocated pass (48 hour, 72 hour, the most allocated weekend pass is 96 hours) otherwise you either take leave out of your balance or you are considered AWOL (Absent withoutn leave) essentially a deserter.
"No water!?" When your in combat you need to know how to carry on without the neccesities, they marched with orders not to drink to be prepared for when they jump into combat (att they knew nothing about Dday). It makes them stronger and prepared knowing they can go longer without food, water or sleep. Infantry units can be in combat for days without sleep and supply is severly limited to the point where some units went days without food or water and still were able to fight. The same thing for the spagetti scene, anytime you have to eat in combat you must be prepared for a sudden attack or to immidiately move without warning. its all part to weed out those who can't hack it like Pvt. Whine in the begining. 50% of people who start the training to become a paratrooper don't finish.
Curahee was the mountain, the motto, and a bonding memory for everyone of E Co.
The entire series is based on the book by historian Stephen E. Ambrose who spent years collecting the stories and history of Easy Company. Some stuff is skewed or shortened for the series but it is all based on what happened to these men.
The point of what happened after Winter's courtsmartial is the Non-commisioned officers (NCOs) was a mutiny. They felt so strongly that Winters being sacked and did not, under any circumstances, trust Soble to lead in combat they rather had faced a firing squad or imprisonment for mutiny than to go into combat with him while winters awaited trial.

Yes, there were a lot of planes, with each of the airborne divisions getting maybe a thousand between paratroopers, gliders , and equipment. United States had two full airborne divisions and the British had one jumping ahead of the amphibious invasion. The idea was to take out key German possessions and to hold strategic territory to prevent German tank divisions from smashing the invasion on the beach. An airborne division at the time had about 8,400 paratroopers and officers. The series, and especially the first episode focus on company E of the 2nd battalion of the 506th parachute infantry regiment in the 101st airborne division. It had about 140 men. Each of the C-47 aircraft held about 28 paratroopers. The D-Day invasion of Normandy was the largest invasion in modern history.
Airborne soldiers were elite light infantry, who often fought behind enemy lines against larger forces. They suffered some highest casualty rates because of it.

    • @MichaelPower212
      @MichaelPower212 Před 2 lety

Your comment about the mission of the airborne units "to take out key German possessions" were located on the flanks of the seaborne invasion area, caused me to ponder a question; a question, I'm surprised after all these years, I had not considered before. I understand the necessity to cover the flanks but the plan to cover the right flank, which went by the wayside due to scattered drops, with the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions appears to have had multiple goals. First, the 82nd had the responsibility of covering the right flank of the invasion with drop zones (DZ) on both sides of the Merderet River to interdict any German response from the north and west. Second, the 101st was responsible to cover the approach to Carentan for a future linkup with the Omaha beach head and to cover the four causeways exiting Utah beach. It is the latter that has me wondering about the interior beaches of Juno, Gold, and Omaha. That is, there was no insertion of airborne units behind those beaches to cut off German reinforcements. There was another British airborne division, the 1st, that was not utilized. A drop just south of Caen would have isolated it. Perhaps, there were not enough available aircraft to include them. Your thoughts?

Jason mentioned that the airplanes that carried the paratroopers to Normandy were Douglas DC-3s. Amazingly, more than fifty years after the end of World War II, a researcher discovered that the lead aircraft for the entire flight was still in existence and had been relatively well maintained. It was the object of a crowd funding, purchased, and rebuilt back to it's D-Day invasion appearance. The name of the aircraft is "That's All, Brother". Wikipedia has an excellent write up on it.

Wow, so much to say about this well done series.
You will come to know love and respect these young men, most were 18-20 years old and had to grow up fast. Some parts will be hard to watch, but it will be worth it in the end. You will know a lot more about what happened during parts of WWII. D-Day was June 6 1944 and they were jumping into France the night before the beach landing to secure roads and bridges and cut German communication lines. They went in by parachute and gliders, and in the confusion of war, there were misdrops and troops were scattered away from their objectives.
Remember, France, Holland and Belgium were under Nazi rule since 1940 and the Allies were there to libertate their countries and free their people. In the process many towns and villages were destroyed by bombs and artillery shells, many civilians were caught in the crossfire.
After the series, please watch the video about the training these actors went through for the making of this series.
    Enjoy

The intense physical training was beyond that of the average soldier. Being a paratrooper required not just jumping out of airplanes but then moving and fighting immediately upon landing with little to join resupply or vehicles. This is why they did all the running and marching. It all paid off on DDay because many landed MILES away from their drop zones and their objectives. A lot of paratrooper volunteers didn't make it through the physical conditioning.

It was a fairly bland meal unless you added a little pepper to it. The US entered the war in 1941 after Pearl Harbor was bombed, but the first significant ground actions took place in Africa in 1942. The D-Day landings took place in 1944, and the weather was so rough over the English Channel the landings and airdrops were postponed several times. The decision to go on June 6th was a last minute decision that almost was cancelled itself.

4:10 A weekend pass is a big deal for soldiers, particularly those in training. While they're in camp and in training, they can't do the things they want to do, since they're kept busy all the time. A weekend pass enables them to blow off steam and is an opportunity for them to do something other than Army stuff and being ordered around, so their pass being revoked (rejected) is like a punch in the gut.
4:50 David Schwimmer shot his scenes for BoB in between Friends seasons, I believe.
6:25 The mess hall is where people eat. Being the mess officer means being the officer in charge of all the cooks who are preparing the meals.
6:55 Sobel's training techniques, mind games and all, are similar to those which training cadres use on those training to be in today's special forces, because these work. Say what you will as a field operation officer, Sobel was one hell of a training officer.
13:15 They were saying they wouldn't serve under Sobel. As an enlisted man has to do whatever his superior officer tells him to do, this is potentially an act of insubordination which, in serious cases, can be punishable with a firing squad.
15:50 This was why most of the paratroopers' equipment was loaded in leg bags, which were intended to be connected to a paratrooper by a rope and which would dangle under the paratrooper during the drop. If the equipment wasn't loaded into leg bags, a paratrooper would likely break his legs when he landed, due to all the weight. This will become an important point in Episode 2.

Focus on what is happening instead of who's in the show. This series was never the actors. None of them were famous at the time this was filmed with the exception of David Schwimmer and maybe Captain Dale Dye who played colonel Sink. This series is about the men who the actors portrayed and also it's a tribute to all of the combat infantrymen who fought in WW2. David Schwimmer has a passing resemblance to the real Lt. Sobel. Re-assigning him to run the parachute school served 2 functions, getting rid of him and controlling him. The school would be instructing other officers of similar rank to himself or higher, which meant that it would have been much harder for him to be abusive to the students than to the lower ranking enlisted men in Easy Company.

Yes the war had been going 3 years before the USA joined proceedings. The Japanese pre-emptively bombed Pearl Harbour which provided the impetus for them to go to war. Initially, the Allies were just France and the Commonwealth nations (mainly England, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand...apologies if i left any nations out). Episode 1 is great but later episodes are great and very intense.
