  • This grafted cactus produced so many cactus pups or offsets. It is time to detach them from their mama cactus and root them on their own in soil.

    Like picking little grapes! Haha! Great idea using the take out containers! And a little recycling in the process!😊👍 Good idea with the rooting powder also! They will get a great start! And yes, what a great deal! All those heliosas!! And you saved the last plant from the clearance rack! Very cool Anna!! As far as. Grafting goes, I like it for certain reasons. If you have a plant like ubelmannia pectinifera , that is hard to keep on its own roots , it's great cause you can have the plant and not worry about root loss. I tried to grow parodia werneri ( Notocactus ubelmannias) three different times . all lost their roots and died. I really love the flowers of this plant! So now this time I grafted it on stenocereus prunosus and got to see it bloom again this year thanks to grafting. For me the Hylocereus stock used for grafting like the one you bought and I have too, are weak and subject to rot. Like the ruby ball gymnocalycium mihanovichii , their stocks always rot and without the stock they can't live. So they remain a short lived novelty. I bought one 5 years ago , cut it off and regrafted it to the stenocereus and now it is huge , healthy and has even bloomed profusely a couple of times. This year it didn't but continues to grow great!!
    Also grafting helps crested plants grow stronger cause the roots on crested plants are usually weak. Yes I realize this looks odd or out of place sometimes, or may change characteristics. But if you want it stronger and sometimes easier to keep. Grafting is a benefit so you don't have to worry about losing a rare plant. And may also stimulate the growth of offsets for propagation such as you have done in this great video😊👍!! Thanks bunches for the shout out!! Also very cool😄👍👍 From Morris park in the Ozarks ,out to Las Vegas" have a great evening Anna!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌹🌴🌷🌿🌸🌻🍀🌺

    Love your videos! I got involved with cacti about 40 years ago, but never had a clear understanding of how to take care of them, until I start watching your wonderful Cactus Caffeine videos. I got books but watching your step-by -step videos I’m now on able to take care of about 300 cacti and suculents. Maybe more… Maybe less… Don’t know exactly. Anyway, thank you very, very much for the hard work producing these videos and for sharing your knowledge. One last thing: There’s any way I can support your efforts and dedication? Really enjoy your videos, Ana! You have renewed my interest in cacti. Planning to get myself a small temporary greenhouse for outside this winter to see if I can get some of my cacti to bloom. Bought some mature ones from Mr. Wigand, so should stand a chance if I keep them cool this winter. If I have any success, I may purchase a permanent greenhouse for next year. That has long been a dream of mine to have my own greenhouse. As for grafted plants, I feel as you do. I would prefer to grow them in a more natural-looking way, but understand the utility and even necessity of grafting. So many of the roses we grew in the Midwest when I lived there, and also in the Southeast, where I live now are grafted for better root stock. They are not so noticeable as grafted plants the way cactus are. It's easy to forget until you prune them back too far and end up with two colors of roses on the same plant because over-pruning allowed the root stock to begin to produce its own flowers again.
    Keep up the terrific videos! Lisa

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 2 lety

      That is so funny about the 2 colored roses😁. Although, I wouldn’t mind that look. 😉 A greenhouse really helps control the cold weather. Also protects your cacti from too much rain. Although you can still grow Trichocereus even without a greenhouse as long as they don’t get snowed on. They are pretty tough. 😉 About grafting, I’ve recently tried it to see if I have the skills. Lol! That is one of my most recent video.

    Nice video, Ana. ❤️ I used to hate grafted cacti too but realised its good points. Gives us a chance to grow very difficult cacti from seeds and you can always use that for propagating and growing pups. Just that dragonfruit cactus as a rootstock is weak and won’t last very long unlike Harrisias and Pereskiopsis. 🥰

      Great video, Ana. That was a bargain price and in a way it’s great having that plant now for a propagation plant. I plan to graft certain cacti in the future just to speed up growth but then get them back on their own roots once they reach a good size. Of course any that are heavily variegated then grafting is the best option. Thank you for sharing with us as always, Ana. From Edith & myself, have a wonderful day 😊🌵🌺🌼☀️🏜☕️

    I actually love the ownroot cactus because there more likely natural than the grafted cactus. But there has the benefits of the grafted cactus,as I know it in Indonesia,there are lots of grafted cactus,the benefits of grafted cactus is there has 2 lifes if it get to root rot,the first who die is the stamp that the stamp will going to shrink and then your cactus can easily remove from the stamp and then propagate it. So the next benefits is that grafted cactus can grow easily and if the cactus is 3 or more years old,the cactus easily start produce the flower buds and flower more faster, that's I know from the grafted and non-grafted cactus.

    With out grafted we would have to wait forever to see the potential of slow growing cati. I like them grafted and no grafted. Only with grafted you can catch potential problems before the cactus starts to rot. The graft takes most of the beating so you are able to graft it again.

Loved the video, I didn't knew the names of the parts of grafted cacti in English (I'm not a big fan of grafted ones and my english is growing yet, hahaha), thank you for teaching and sharing. Sending hugs and love to you from Spain.😘

    Someone took the time to purchase the grafting stock, cactus, and container.. add soil, while watering it and giving it a space to sit and time to grow. Then performing the grafting surgery and making sure it healed. Then giving it a repotting and more time to to grow. On top of that it has tons of pups. All that time and effort and it was on sale for $5 🤣😭💯👍
    Great find.

      It's fairly likely that the grafting stock and cactus weren't purchased, but grown :)

    I enjoy all of your videos. I just started growing succulents and I like cacti the most. I like how you give a lot of details as you’re showing us how to do things. I just bought a Moon cactus. I liked the color of the grafted part which prompted me to buy a pink moon cactus. I didn’t know they produced pups and that you could propagate them. I’ll have to find your video with the next step. I think I agree with you. You’re getting a lot of pups but the plant with the base and the Scion with all those pups Isn’t very attractive.

    This is really helpful Ana. I actually love my grafted Rubutia - named Magnus Magnusson because he's such a strange brain-like looking plant...but tragically he's developed root rot and I'm going to try and save parts of him using your method. Could you then re-graft some of the rooted pups back onto a new rootstock if you wanted?

    Hi Anna how many times you fertilize your cactus..? I watch some blog from Philippines she's using AJINOMOTO had you tried that... Im also in vegas I just started growing cactus recently.. I could say I'm addicted to them..

      @CactusCaffeine  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello Haydee. It is nice to know another grower from Vegas. 😉 I fertilize 1-2x a month during spring and summer. No, I haven’t tried AJINOMOTO. I think it is used as a cheaper alternative to other types of fertilizer. Fortunately here in the US, cactus fertilizer is plenty and affordable so I prefer to use them. Just recently, I tried adding worm compost to my soil. But it is too soon to tell the difference. 😉

    Not a huge fan of grafted plants... But I'm also sure it has saved me from rotting out my crested euphorbia. But sometimes, particularly with the colourful moon cacti, I don't think they are meant to be long term plants, and I find it a bit wasteful. They are pretty though.

    Thanks for sharing. I loved seeing how you made the holes with the hot screw. I Hate grafted cactus. They look stupid. Also if they can't grow on their own they shouldn't be growing. No one goes around in the wild sticking them on other plants. I love astrophytum asterias but hate seeing them on sticks like that. Oh I keep forgetting to check your community page. I must do that. I haven't posted to mine in a long time.

    Ana. I'm kind of new now to growing cactus and you've taught me a lot of great tips and tricks to growing. My question to you is I have an Arizona Cactus I bought from a guy traveling across country and have had it for a good 4 years now. This cactus gives me a huge amount of pups and even pups on pups on Pups! Can I propegate a pup with pups growing on the original 'pups'? I've been watching for this on your site and others, and haven't seen it. Have I got a unique situation? Thanks in advance.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 2 lety +1

      You have one giving cactus there. 😃 Yes, you can propagate pups from pups. The principle is the same as propagating the original pup. Just place them on top of soil and do not bury them too deep. Try to keep the top of the soil moist until they form roots. Then you can start giving more water. 🙂

I have some grafted cacti they are called moon cactus plants and some have a few pups I'd love to remove but scared they will die if I try to remove them. I'm not a lover of grafted but the I got em when I first started getting into cacti

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 3 lety +2

      Moon cactus (with the exception of the purple variety) must always be grafted to live. They do not have chlorophyll to photosynthesize on their own. All other cacti (as far as I know) can live on their own roots. They are grafted to speed up their growth or to lessen the risk of root rot.🙂

    Hello Ana! Have a great day with a coffe cup tomorrow morning! I’m Beatriz the grandmother from Miami with 90 degrees and I want to buy some aterirla to block the excess sun but Home Depot didn’t have the other day so I’m ordering from amazon! Do you have any suggestions on size of 40 50 70 or 90 percent blockage! Green or black! Thank you very much! Always learning from you!!!!

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 3 lety

      It depends on how much sun the area will be getting. I would suggest not going over 70%. At 90 degrees, maybe even a 50% shade cloth is sufficient if it is morning sun and for a few hours only. I have 70% but our temperature here is 105-113F everyday.

    • @CactusCaffeine
