COTTAGE BEDROOM MAKEOVER USING THRIFT STORE FINDS/IOD Paint Inlay Giveaway

- This is the second part of a two-part series on making over my “Home Goods” designed bedroom into a room I imagine you might find in an English Country Cottage. I use thrift store finds and create several DIY projects including recovering a fabric lamp shade, making faux Delft tiles and applying them to my faux fireplace without using grout or a tile cutter, painting and adding molding to a pair of 1990’s bookcases, and converting a thrifted hard-wired chandelier into a plug-in light fixture. I also provide a few tips on styling bookshelves and hanging a gallery wall.

A couple things that I forgot to mention. I REALLY struggled finding fabric that I liked. JoAnn Fabrics has so many empty shelves! The peacock fabric on the lampshades came from Walmart. It was sold in a one yard package from Waverly and was under $5. The curtains were from Amazon and cost under $30 for a pair (cheaper than I could have made with any available fabric). My old headboard was too wide to fit between the bookcases. The new headboard was also from Amazon and cost under $150. Here are the links: floral curtains: amzn.to/3sGZMBh and metal headboard: amzn.to/3uQILaG
I noticed the shelves were the decorator fabrics are were empty. Since I live within 20 minutes of Joann’s corporate headquarters in Hudson, Ohio and they also have a huge store so I went there in hopes of finding fabric for cornices. No luck! Extremely low in merchandise.
The availability, not to mention quality, of fabric at Joann's is really lacking. Fingers crossed I can find the peacock fabric at my Walmart.
Hello!! I really loved how you left your beautiful bedroom, I am a regular at walmart looking for things first, because everything seems to have better prices, I am disappointed that I have not been able to find some fabrics that I claimed I could easily get from JoAnn, but walmart always has hidden treasures, I'm happy that you got what you wanted and shared your extraordinary work with us. I have looked for the curtains in homegoods and they are quite expensive when you want to remodel an entire room. My pocket is shedding many tears. I got a headboard at hobby lobby, at a great price, maybe you can look there and get something you'd like. Thank you for everything you share with us. Greetings from Tulsa, Ok.
@@gladysclausing8785 my store wa absolutely empty last time I went as well! 🙃 Hopefully they will get more of those beautiful fabrics in soon!
Ohhhh I love seeing anything from Walmart as I work in the online order fulfillment dept and get a small discount (10% which is better than NONE, lol!)! I LOVE the tile around the firepalce!
I have a very nice fake fireplace that was given to me when someone I know was driving by the OLD victorian style houses in the city nearby...all the houses over there are BEAUTIFUL! They are all around the Hospital area and near downtown which is a large fishing port and used to be the wealthiest Whaling port in the world and all the houses over there were built by Drs and Fishing Boat captians and many have the Widows Peak balcony where they say the Captns wives used to go up there on the rooftop balcony to watch for their husbands boat to come up over the horizon!...anyway they were doing a remodel on one of the old Victorians and someone had JUST put down this old fake fireplace mantel and he grabbed it up and brought it to my apartment! Its so funny when a neighbor sees in my house, lol, they always say the same thing..HOW did you get a FIREPLACE?!!!
Anyway, the inset part is metal and painted to look like marble and its quite worn and discolored at this point. I thought about painting it, but just dont think that will do it justice. The rest of it, the mantel and sides are a gorgeous chippy off white older shiplap type wood, so it would need something to make that POP, not blend it all in....SOOO ive left it alone, but often will try to brainstorm SOMETHING...Im just wondering if the tile would be too heavy for a fireplace mantel that isnt bolted in?! I cant do that bc it is an apartment and I may get in trouble or not be able to take it out with me when I move someday bc of the large holes or however I'd make it more permanent. Id just be afraid it MIGHT make it "front" heavy.....BUT if it would work, it would look SO MUCH BETTER than the fake marble that is black with what once was white, but is not a yellowing white marbling through it, lol!
I'm from England and I must congratulate you for nailing English country garden even down to your cat snoozing on the bed! Thoroughly love watching your channel, thank u.
Two words…magazine worthy!!!! You’ve done a spectacular job on this bedroom makeover, and nailed the look you were going for 👏🏻😁👍🏻. Have yourself a nice day today. 😊
This morning when I woke up the first thought I had was "It's Tuesday! I get to see what's on Canterbury Cottage!" You've become a healthy addiction that I love! Thank you so much.
The tiles around the fireplace...SO AMAZING! You did a great job!
Beautiful makeover, I love the fireplace tiles that was a brilliant idea. This will definitely be a cozy and warm room .
Perfect. I can’t believe how the metal headboard fit so perfectly between the bookcases! I crack up every time you say something was in your stash or it was in your basement! I’m imagining a full thrift store beneath your home ha ha Thanks for starting my Tuesday off with a smile once again.
Thank you, Patricia! My husband would say that I DO, in fact, have an entire thrift store in my basement. I have never shown my storage room in a video, but, maybe, I will.
@@CanterburyCottage oh yes! I think we'd all like to see the thrift store in your basement!
Yes, please show us! I have thought the same thing! (Where/how does she keep all this?!)
@@CanterburyCottage Oh well you turned that stash into a darned good business.
@@CanterburyCottage, Yes Please! We would all love to see "Sherry's Thrift Store".
So cozy and elegant....
Who else would LOVE to live in Sherry’s home...???!!!
I know I would...!!!!!
All mothers and grandmothers need to take a page from your book. Your soul, you, just beautiful, inside and out.
You nailed it Sherry! Those tiles! Genius! Your room looks so cozy and romantic, every detail is spot on. Thank you for sharing with us.
What a lovely, quiet space you’ve created for a cozy night’s sleep with space for a daytime getaway. Great job; and that fireplace tile is the crowning glory!!
You are a true creator and crafter, who beats all, even those who say they’re crafters! You are a perfectionist…
Great job on your bedroom makeover. Can't believe how many projects you completed in such a short time!! I bet your husband is surprised everyday at what he will find inside the house.
I love the lamp! You could try painting the inside of the lampshade in an antique gold which should dull the brilliant colours a bit.
That is a brilliant idea, Theresa! I would never have thought of doing that!
@@CanterburyCottage I was also wondering if you couldn't put thinned paint or white antiquing wax over the outside. Maybe take a few swatches and experiment with things.
@Canterbury Cottage You could also put a really sheer fabric over the shades to mute the brilliance of the colors. If you pleated the sheer fabric, you could even add the pleated fabrics element of the English Cottage style. Also, I see lots of blues and greens and not many pinks or peaches. You may want to incorporate those colors a little more so it looks more like your inspiration plate and less like a blue and white chinoiserie inspired look.
BTW, beautiful transformation! You had so many great ideas. My favorites were the tiles (brilliant!) and the faux preserved butterflies. Loving the channel!! :) czcams.com/channels/1QUlf7bBCRgrsMeOZ4nILA.html
wouldn't it bleed through?
How gorgeous! I love the tiles that you decoupaged. There're are so many ideas to use those for in future projects. It all looks so fabulous and you are incredibly talented!
That humble inspiration plate from the thrift store must be feeling pretty special right now.
🥰
My jaw dropper this week? The. Whole. Entire. Project!!! Especially the Delft Tiles. Utterly amazing and gorgeous. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The room turned out magazine perfect! The tile idea is genius.
Girl, you are a genius! You have inspired me to get started on my bedroom... It's out of control! Blessings on you, sweet lady!
Oh my goodness, pure perfection. Love those peacock lamps, beautiful curtains, the fabrics, furniture, just everything! I especially love the sweet little kitty in his bed. Well done!
What a beautiful English bedroom! It looks like Jane Austen’s heroines’ bedroom. I love your style, Sherry, so classy and antique. You’re an artist 😍
Well, this English woman thinks you absolutely nailed the cottage style! Beautiful colours and patterns, lovely artwork and for me, the faux Delft tiles were the highlight - as ever, your imagination and skill made this a pleasure to watch. I'm in awe of how your cat knows to sleep in the cat bed! Ours will sleep on any cushion, ironing pile etc but his own basket? No thanks, Mum!
Sounds like our cats! Lol
Our kitty Gizmo also loves to sleep in his cat bed when it's on top of our bed. I'm sure his little orthopedic bed is more comfortable than our own bed! 😁
The room looks gorgeous.
The tile around around the fireplace is my favorite.
I don't know where to begin!
The lamp, the shelves, the butterfly pics, but THE GARGOYLE HEAD!! I love it!
Fireplace tiles....simply genius!
❤❤❤👍
The bedroom is so warm and inviting. I love how even the cat bed matches. What a lucky kitty. Everything is just beautiful
Wow, Sherry! Just wow!
You've done an outstanding job.
I love decorating but have retired and now my budget is so tight I've had to give it up. It's been extremely hard for me as I always have these ideas come into my head. What I'm trying to convey is that coming upon your channel has helped me to not miss my own decorating so much. You remind me of myself in that way.
I want to add that you should fabric cover the lamp chain.
I look forward to your next video. And ...thank you for filling a big missing gap in my life.
Because you used your personal and well-loved items, this space has a PEACE about i. Love the warm wood tones-- and the lighter colors or the other furnishings and off white give a lot of contrast, accentuating the wood pieces.Looks authentic! Well played, Madam!
Thank you, Caron! I love walking into my bedroom. It is a lovely surprise every time! I hope I never tire of it!
Beautiful bedroom. I would never want to leave it. The blues and white are a peaceful, calming combination. Great job.
I adore your completed room refresh! I've never even heard of those tiles! Wow, your knock offs are just fabulous! They really bring the fireplace into your decor. I would never have thought to put a bookcase behind a night stand, that's my favorite idea! Thanks for all the wonderful ideas!
Oh my gosh what a stunning transformation. You really outdid yourself this time Sherry. I am in awe of the decorating ideas you come up with and love your channel and your bubbly personality 💕
I love that the room feels fresh and crisp, if that makes sense, and at the same time cozy and warm. The Delft tile on your fireplace is perfect! Phenomenal job!
How is it possible that you WOW us with every video? You literally work your magic each and everytime. I am impressed Sherry with the patience you have to take apart items and make them into something amazing.
The idea of making over plain tiles to look antique and then put them around your fireplace, well, that was just pure genius! It turned out so beautifully. Your lamp shades redo were so pretty. The booked cases turned out perfectly. You are an absolute treasure and a pleasure to watch each and every week.
Take care Sherry. 🤗 Lindy
Lindy, you are always SO sweet! I surprised myself with how nice those tiles turned out. I am loving my fireplace.
I really enjoyed seeing your bedroom makeover and think you nailed it! I loved how budget friendly you made it and those tiles around your fireplace was so creative and smart thinking. Your bookshelves just made the space around your bed and you will enjoy styling those shelves. It will be more fun for you to search out books that will fill those shelves! I know you have worked so hard on your room transformation and I think it turned out beautiful and you will enjoy your new space so much! So many wonderful ideas and thanks again for sharing your amazing creativity with us! Much love, Teresa
Thank you so much, sweet friend! Your opinion means SO much to me!!!
That turned out just stunning! I LOVE the idea of having the bookcases behind the nightstands, I’m going to see if I can incorporate that into our bedroom. Hope you have a great week!
Thanks, Melissa! I wanted the bookcases to frame the window, but I knew my husband was not going to give up his nightstand, so I made it work. I did have to buy a new headboard because my existing one was a few inches too wide. (And, it was a great excuse to get something more fitting for the cottage style.😜)
@@CanterburyCottage I think the bookcases really make the window behind your bed work.
@@CanterburyCottage never hurts my feelings to get to buy a little something new every now and then! 😜
Sherry, the tiles on the fireplace are genius. The coordination of the various fabrics makes the room so cozy and inviting. Another reader commented that your makeover is magazine worthy and I couldn't agree more! Keep those videos coming. You have the best home decor/thrifting/makeover channel out there.
The results are beautiful! So cozy looking and my favorite is the fireplace tiles! Genius!!
The delft tiles on the fireplace is genius. The entire room is glorious!
Your room is absolutely gorgeous and so serene. I love those tiles. Definitely something I would wanna try. I love them the best but everything you did just is beautiful. I just threw a lampshade away that was all cracked, if I knew how easy it was to redo I would’ve kept it. Thanks for all your tips and gorgeousness. This is my favorite channel and I can’t wait for Tuesday mornings for all your inspiration. Thank you once again for making my day.
Your bedroom looks so serene, romantic, and just perfectly beautiful, Sherry! I love your can-do spirit in making the antique-look tiles that you love. That fireplace looks amazing and authentic! 👍🏼🤗🥰
I loved all your improvements and they make The Room so comfy. My mother who died this week would have loved all the butterflies staging in bookcases. I often showed her CZcams's including yours and we enjoyed watching together when I went to visit her.💙
Thank you, Shelley. I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. I lost my mother a few years ago, and I still miss her every day. No one replaces your mother.❤️
I love the lamp shades! The not ugly lamp is beautiful since you redid its shade. I love your new make over, it is simply beautiful.
Sherry - you outdid yourself. It is lovely!!! I love how you included the inspiration plate as part of the decor. For the hanging lamp - which I love - I think it you made a small tube of white fabric (or as close the the ceiling color as possible) and just threaded it over that small part of cord by the lamp to the curtains - it would hide it nicely. I love how the bookcases look built in! So many of those old shelves and entertainment centers are just give-a ways because people don't know what to do with them. Hopefully you will inspire others to rethink and repurpose to make them (loved) useful again. Thanks again. I love your videos. Thanks!!!!! Absolutely LOVE the fireplace tile!!!
Oh I love it! Those tiles are brilliant. The chandelier is perfect! 😍❤
What a gorgeous bedroom...cozy, relaxing, beautiful! Those Delft tiles! Such a great solution. Thanks for the Light in your eyes and genuine warmth. You make a difficult world a better place. Thank you! 💓
Your patience amazes me. Your bedroom looks lovely. Keep up the good work!
So beautiful. I love how the tiles turned out. I would never have thought of the bookcase idea. I’m going to try to use that in my bedroom
Me too. Making over my front bedroom.
I love the tiles on the fireplace! Two of my Grandkids and I did that with cheap tiles and a waterproof finish for coasters for lots of Christmas gifts a couple of years. Love the curtains and all the blue all over in pillows, etc! Well done!
Your bedroom looks absoutely lovely, warm, COZY! lucky you and your husband to relax, dream and wake in such a room...it's stunning and made by you....again very, very, nice.....the word beautiful used so often...it's beyond words. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much! You are so so sweet, Adele!
Fabric cord cover for the chandelier. The “tiles” for the fireplace are awesome. What a great idea.
Beautiful warm and welcoming ❤️🇨🇦
Awww Sherry! I love how cozy your beautiful bedroom makeover turned out! Wow you have been busy my friend! Your vintage books 📚 😍 are lovely! I agree the lamp is beautiful! The dresser color is amazing I absolutely love green and I am so glad it's back in style again! You need to make sure to gave us a tour again when you paint the closet doors😊 This was perfect even the Kitty was sleeping at the right time!🐈⬛
Your makeover was perfect. Love the way the tiles on the fireplace turned out and what a savings from the real thing. Also love the way the bookcases flake the bed and how the drapes accent it all. I am always amazed at all the wonderful ideas you come up with. What a surprise to see I was one of the winner of your drawing. You made my day, Thanks!!
That tile hack is just gorgeous....genius!
The cord on your lamp could be covered with a material that matches your lamp. Easy to make a cord cover. Fun make over.
Your bedroom is so beautiful. Made me cry. You are so talented. Love how you made your fireplace tiles. All makeovers are fantastic!
I love your bedroom! Beautiful, cozy, welcoming, restful... Congratulations to the Winners!
Sherry your bedroom is just gorgeous. As I sit in my English bedroom watching this video, I look around and see some of the elements you have included in your room so many miles away. I even have my cat here in the bedroom but he is not so good as yours and is sleeping on my bed. I love your fireplace especially the tiles, and your bedroom shelves. I love books, flowers and photos on my shelves in my room alongside things I love to look at. Great work. Sue (UK)
Oh Sherry, your bedroom turned out so beautiful and it looks like an authentic English cottage. The shelves flanking each side of the window, your dresser & trunk really are the key pieces to pulling this off. I agree, the lamp is just too pretty but the gargoyle's face it's ugly either, it's more cute and sad...ha ha. You did an amazing job!!
I totally love the bedroom. I think the curtains/drapes are lovely and it's just all so comforting!
I do not comment very often, or at all, but I do watch all of your videos. I love your bedroom makeover so very much. I cannot fathom how you come up with so many ideas..Every. single. Week. Honestly, you are my crafting hero.
Sherry, so much to love about this makeover! I'd been debating putting a fireplace in my room and you've convinced me to do it. I have a brass chandelier that was in my grandma's house. It's currently in my dining room but is really too small. I love the idea of converting it to a plug-in and have it hanging over a reading chair in my room. And the gargoyle! He is so delightful I literally laughed out loud! Thank you so much for sharing all your wonderful ideas!
You’re ideas are always so amazing and such an inspiration! My husband and I are in the process of building our Forever Home and I’m looking forward to applying many of your thrifted ideas to decorate our home. Have a blessed week 😊
In my own opinion you should be so very proud of this amazing transformation you made in your Bedroom! Bravo 👏 and 👏
Thank you! I am really happy with the transformation!
The room is lovely. The tiles you made for around your fireplace are genius! They look so authentic. You are very clever and talented. The different furniture pieces and dressing of the bookcases totally speaks of English Country. Your room looks like a decade of collecting. Nicely done! Thx for the inspiration.
Thank you, Stephanie! I am amazed at how authentic those tiles look, too. Modern photography is amazing!!!
@@CanterburyCottage I think it had less to do with the photography and more to do with your skill!
Stunning! So many beautiful moments in this room, but the fireplace absolutely makes it. I've considered adding tile to my electric fireplace and you've given me courage....thank you!
Your lampshade--sometimes what we thought might be a boo hoo turns out to be a woo hoo. Loved the redo!!!
I LOVE your bedroom! I especially love that flower chair. It's so cozy and looks like a place I'd like to spend all of my time.
I’ve just discovered you and I love everything, 100% my style! I did that with bookshelves on each side of my sofa. Left them brown and lined the backs with a beautiful old paisley wallpaper. Old houses have radiators under windows, so each side becomes unused space, and I too put the side tables in front of the bookcases as you did the nightstands. You gave me a million more ideas! Just wonderful, thank you.
I’m so glad you liked it, Donna!🥰
Your bedroom turned out Beautiful! I'm sure I would have had a meltdown when the lampshade came apart, you did a wonderful job. I forgot to tell you last week that the dresser turned out perfect. I loved the idea of the tiles. I am so inspired to get to my granddaughter's room. Thank you!
What a transformation! I love how cosy it looks, and those tiles are really inspiring, it's all absolutely gorgeous x
I love your Delph tiles, genius, the faded paint inlays framed, the lamp, lots of great things.
Congratulations to the winners. Your bedroom is beautiful. I love the tile idea on the fireplace. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing.
The room is so soothing and feels like a, well a hug. Amazing. I’ve started my design plans and you have inspired me. Thank you
The tiles and the fireplace are absolutely beautiful, you done a wonderful job on it and a wonderful job thinking up to make them tiles with printed out paper and Mod Podge they look like real tiles!!
Wow! Your bedroom make-over turned out beautiful! I can't believe the decoupaged tiles around the fireplace! It looks so high-end 😍 👌! The kitty on your bed was the perfect finishing touch! Lol! You did a wonderful job!
I love it! The room turned out so beautifully. You could take the lamp shades out on a sunny day and spray them with bleach water and tea- that would really age them. My favorite is the "delft" tiles!
That was so pretty. Everything works together so well. I loved the tiles (and the butterfly decor). I thought the fabric you chose for the lampshade was beautiful, but if you want to to tone down the intensity of the color, perhaps you could do a little bit of dry brush painting over the fabric. Do a test piece first. 😀
That is an interesting idea! I have never painted fabric, but I know some people are painting their upholstered furniture now.
I had a similar thought, but I’d perhaps do a coat of watered down chalk paint in a cream color (like Waverly’s plaster or ivory) and then use a damp cloth to pull some of it back, like the ragging technique used on furniture or walls. I’ve had great success painting lampshades and other fabrics. I liked another viewer’s idea to paint the inside of the shade too. It might be easier and work better to use spray paint for that, just taping off the outside and any edges.
@@CanterburyCottage This is the very questions I was going to ask you! I have a 1990s style couch at the foot of my bed that I got at an estate sale for $11. I bought it with the intention of painting the fabric, figuring I wouldn't be out of a lot if it flopped. Now just need to channel your intrepid energy and do it!
@@jodilea144, that sounds like a very good option too.
The reveal was amazing! Right from the beginning with the reading nook, it all flowed so beautifully together. If I had to pick on favorite, it would be the "fake" fireplace tiles. Brilliant! as usual. You are so creative.
Sherry, the room turned out so beautiful! I love the butterfly pictures you created. What a great video. Thank you for sharing your ideas and talents.
Absolutely gorgeous!!! Love the addition of the bookshelves. You do them so beautifully. Love the mirror above your dresser & the sitting corner beside it. Amazing transformation as always. 👏🥰💕
Bedroom looks wonderful Sherri. You did a great job. I love the way you styled your bookcases. Keep the great videos coming.
This is gorgeous!! The tile idea is absolutely brilliant and turned out stunning. I think a fabric cord cover on the light fixture cord would be gorgeous. The entire bedroom turned out so gorgeous!! It looks like it was added to over time instead of a new makeover. Applause!!!!!!
the tile around the fireplace is just stunning! for $10!
As the English would say the room decor is spot on! It is so beautiful. The whole room looks as if all the elements have been collected over time. The idea for the tiles around the fireplace is brilliant. You are so very talented. Kitty sleeping in the bed is a nice touch.
I can’t believe you said my name. 🙂
My brother contacted you because he knows me, my mom, and my grandma love to watch your videos and he thought it would be a great Valentines gift. 🙂Also, I love what you did with your room. I love it. 💖
Oh my gosh. It’s lovely. Absolutely lovely. My favorite thing is the fireplace surround…love it so. So sweet that you are entertaining 3 generations in one family. ❤️❤️❤️
The bedroom redo is just beautiful, I especially love the fireplace makeover and the bookshelves behind the nightstands, I never would have thought to do that.
Job well done. The tiles are brilliant! And the bookshelves are great. Thanks for all you do!
As an English women, I can say this looks stunning, you've captured the English look beautifully. Well done.
Fantastic accomplishment, finding it difficult to say what my favourite project was. It has to be the tiles on the fireplace.
Very cozy and calming bedroom. Great job. Your visual board came to life
The tile is my favorite project but I love it all. The cozy kitty is a darling and the book shelves are a wonderful addition.
This room is absolutely gorgeous, you nailed it 100% and I will copy your fireplace with out any doubt! Have a super nice day !

I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. Your house also inspires me... it is so refreshing to see a decor that isn't all from Target or Home goods, all grey or black and white. I love colorful things and comfortable things... your style is great. So much talent!
Love the painted bookshelves! If you don't love the lampshades, try painting on some strong tea or coffee to tone down the brightness .
Sherry, you continue to exceed my expectations! Your bedroom compares to a luxury suite! I look forward to each Tuesday. Thank you for all you do and share with everyone.
