The best example I know of DI winning over a mic'd amp is the recording of the rhythm guitar in Pink Floyd's Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 - Dave Gilmour could not get a decent mic'd clean sound. It was Nile Rogers who was working in a studio down the corridor who suggested Dave ran his Strat clean straight into the desk - in this instance DI worked for the better with compression and reverb to suit added later giving a more "even" tone with fewer transients and at a constant level that could not be achieved with a mic'd amp.
As far as a DAW goes there is a lot to be said for recording a DI dry signal and adding amp models, effects etc to taste afterwards.

I'm surprised, actually, that I'm digging the Deluxe the most. I'm far from a Fender guy. But I think it has to do more with your style of playing through it. In person it is probably over the top but it translates very well through my setup that I'm listening through here with some old sony multimedia speakers.

  • @recordatron

Personally, I've really come round to direct outs through a cab sim recently. The two notes torpedo is what I use and I've never looked back. I still get the analog sound and feel of my amps but it basically ends up sounding the way I want it to without having to basically EQ the snot out of a standard speaker and mic combo. To cut a long story short, I feel like DI and cab sim is the way to get a nice crisp representation of whatever you're showing off but having some sound in the room through a cab for you so you can feel it would be a good combo. That's just me though.

Having spent a huge part of my youth (and later) listening to live bands I can honestly say that nothing sounds as good as live. There is something about music at volume in a venue full of peole that just makes for an amazing sound. Marshall stacks forever !

I did really like the Orange D.I'd cos at least there's enough top end to be taken away where as its not something that is even there with the MG or the Fender. Better to have too much in the first place than not have it at all.
Definitely agree with the 57, though. Wins hands down for me too.

Each amp got its own personalities • 🤘
D I on my 100watt Boss Katana (use 2 own) didn’t really change anything much because it’s more for recording purposes like thru a laptop to block out outside noises your mic picks up rather than use daily is my understanding about Di’s.
After I tried my DI once I never went back to it because I don’t record anything ( I just play ) and that is what a big mistake I did. ( should’ve recorded oh well)..
If I ever go to recording situations w/laptops or iPad then I go DI all day long to shut off outside noises. My pick • all of them … your mic is perfect.

i've always tended to love more "live" sounding recordings and there is something I love about the SM57 alot actually. I little more muffled.. DIing I get lost in effect emulations and a bunch of crap not really playing as much. Sometimes just direct into amp, lil amp reverb and gain, and the SM57

I totally agree with you and that character you talk about is I think it. DI often sounds very generic to me, now I'll say missing some character. 😁
However, I think it depends on the he music you play. I feel that those who play mainly high gain DI is great, but if you're looking for fender break up it's very hard to get that exact sound. I think that's where character really comes into things.
    Great vid Dave., 🎸🎸🎸

I dont have even a scratch full of your talent and i cant make up my mind if i want to go di.
I like the idea of having all of the options of di with none of the space requirements, but i really like being able to reach down and just spin the knob on whatever single piece i want to change.
Even finding a combination of settings i like for a given sound and being able to save the settings, trying to remember the names of the settings is sometimes a pia. But, then you add in the extra time and hassle of maintaining tube amps, and that pushes me back to digital.
Loading up a single interface that can be plugged into ANY speaker is appealing, but it doesnt have the same room filling output.
All of this, and even if i do go di, then the hunt starts for which one to choose. Im already worn out and need a nap.
Sorry i couldnt help. Maybe after a good nap and a few adult beverages. Cheers

Recording is a different art form. As Andrew Scheps said, in mixing, "all that matters is what comes out of the speakers". It doesn't matter what fancy gear you use, real outboard gear or plugins, amp or ampsims, DI or mic. I am with you that DI does not feel like the real amp, but when the song is whole, it does not matter at all as long as it did not affect how you played. The final result is more important.

The Marshall with 57 no distortion pedal gets my vote. Always way more flexibility using a mic. Just moving the mic to different places on the cone will give you so many more variations than DI. DI always seems to have a harshness that you can’t get rid of. Also way more dynamics with a mic even when amp is not totally cranked up.
    Thanks for the video.

Goldilocks and the -three bears- four samples ...
    Clean
    1. Being first has the advantage of establishing a benchmark. I think I dont like oranges, but it sounded ok to me.
    2. Sounded muffled and blanketed by comparison (though as you say, relativity skews perceptions)
    3. Ouch, thats too bright.
    4. Comfortable. Not too bright, not too dark. Still prefer #1, but #4 second place.
    Distorted
    1. Hmm, ok. Doesn't blow me away. A smidge dull.
    2. Blanketed again.
    3. I like it. It has clarity.
    4. Somewhere in-between again. Probably second, with #3 first.
The contrasts between the blanketed and shrill were noticeable as the clips continued. The tonal differences werent subtle or nuanced, in isolation anyway.
But what you hear live in the room is probably also very different from what we hear in the recording playback too.

DI can work amazing. Bass especially, it’s more standard to just use DI. I personally love di so i can record at night or whenever my roommate is screaming at fortnite. I would highly recommend looking into the Humboldt Simplifier or simplifier deluxe if it’s in budget. it’s essentially an amp and cap sim that runs DI. in my opinion it sounds amazing and more like a proper miced and lightly mixed amp right off the gate and is an AMAZING pedal platform. If you’re not doing much crazy you can save money on the regular simplifier, however if you want a super nice and easy wet/dry/wet sound the deluxe makes that much easier (and has made double tracking a breeze for me as i’m basically double tracking with one take). Hope this helps!

A DI removes the final two, we will call them "EQ's," in the chain from Guitar to ear. That is both the room and the speaker. DI is great for recording and large concerts. For just playing or playing in a small (relatively speaking) room use the cab. For CZcams or whatever it is ease and availability to record with Mic. Just my two pence.

Listening through speakers - the SM57 definately gives some body to my ears. Sounds fuller, and this is a weird description but more embracing/engulfing. I am not quite sure what it is, maybe my ears here "more" frequencies/of the sound and as such feels more like the sound surrounds/fills the space, where as the DI sounds more "front on", not sure if thats less frequences I pick up - but it sounds a bit shallower.
Now I'll say this - if the DI sound was what I heard first, it sounds great. But side by side, I get that warmer fuller mic'd sound.
You can't go wrong with either. I am also almost certain that you could EQ/adjust the DI sound a bit (maybe have a plug in or pedal purely for post production EQ?).

I'm gonna stir the pot.....I watch a lot of band documentaries of classic bands and i noticed that they always had big old ribbon mics on the guitar amps in the studio...with a little distance...6-12". They are not as bright, start rolling off above 4Khz, but they capture things the way the "ear" does. Also figure 8 polar pattern picks up the room more. I've been using Superlux mics which have a built in phantom buffer so you can't accidentally blow them up. They are quite inexpensive for now as few have caught on to them. I noticed Andy Powell was using ribbons when I saw Wishbone last year. For recording they make a guitar sit nice and full in a mix....I'll add in a little SM57 if I need more edge.

Actually, I liked the Fender with the SM57 better. It sounded more crisp and clear with the distortion. Also, you could put a Blues Breaker pedal to fatten and warm the tone, plus with the clean platform of the Fender, you can add a pedal to get that. The Orange was second. It was dark yes, but its a different amp in general. Its a British crunch. The MG was harsh and muddy.

There are three more cool options: digital preamp + cab ir + frfr speaker, digital preamp + poweramp of your beloved tube amp (via fx return) and preamp + class d poweramp + your beloved real guitar cab. All worth some experimentation and quite eyes opening 😊. Most important is that you don't need a Kemper or Tonex or any of these expensive toys for it.

As a Fender Deluxe Reverb 65 Reissue player in the first place, who switched to Marshall 2525H / 2525C mostly now, I can tell you, you have to think differently on a Fender Deluxe Reverb-like Amp. You would not use the same Amount of distortion, and probably not the same type. Otherwise, a Fender will sound super-distorted, way to harsh for your soft Frusciante-ish playstyle. (My Digitech Bad Monkey is soft enough, most "green" distortions will do I guess)
Which distortion did you use here? I would guess the DS1or so? (Orange style?) Still, I think most Valve Amps sound superbe with SM57, and DI's need amp simulations in order to sound as they should in a recording, an EQ or in-Amp Sim wont always do the trick, in my humble opinion. Best regards! :)
